✨✧ Toots & The MaytalsFunky Kingston/In The Dark ... CD
Island, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
While the original Island issue of the album Funky Kingston here in the states was actually a compilation of tracks from the original Jamaican and UK issues of the album by that title and the In The Dark LP cut the same year, this two-for-one CD reissue finally sets the record straight, packaging both fine, funky LPs on one CD! While the In The Dark set had a slightly more funky edge to it, we're making no bones here, as all the numbers here are sweet soulful reggae at its best, making it no wonder why Toots & The Maytals were to become one of reggae's biggest international stars. 21 tracks in all, including "Funky Kingston", "In The Dark", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Time Tough", "54-46 Was My Number", "Pressure Drop", "Sit Right Down", "Having A Party", "Revolution", "Love's Gonna Walk Out On Me" and "Fever". Trojan/Brook (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A heady batch of classics from Toots & The Maytals – work from the rocksteady years that really helped set the tone for countless reggae work in years to come – and which also helped Jamaican music really reach out at a more global level – especially on the London scene, where the group really found great fame! The set's full of seminal cuts from this wonderful group – and the package even includes a few dubs of vocal numbers, and some lesser-known gems mixed in with the hits. Titles include "54 46 That's My Number", "Alidina", "Bim Today Bam Tomorrow", "Do The Reggay", "Johnny Cool Man", "Just Tell Me", "Monkey Man", "Night & Day", "Oh Yeah", "Don't Trouble", "I Need Your Love", "Image Get A Kick", and "I Shall Be Free". MaytalsFrom The Roots (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
Stunning early work from one of our favorite reggae groups ever – the mighty Toots & The Maytals, a key link between the soul styles of the Jamaican scene of the 60s, and the righteous years to come! There's a groove to the Maytals music that nobody else seems to get this right – or this tight – a fantastic criss-crossing of rhythms that's often nicely stripped-down, and which seems to set fire to the vocal interplay between Toots and the rest of the group – in a way that's as vocally explosive as the instrumentation at the core! Sure, these guys can harmonize as well as the rest of their contemporaries – but they've also got an even greater talent for trading back and forth, which seems to make every one of their tunes an instant groove. Titles include "Pee Pee Cluck Cluck", "Loving Spirit", "Dr Lester", "Gold Silver", "Koo Koo", "Revival Reggae", "Thy Kingdom Come", "One Eyed Enos", "A Time To Love", "9 O'Clock", "Know Me Good", "Got To Feel", "Feel So Good", and "Give Peace A Chance". ✨✧ VariousThis Is Reggae Music – The Golden Era 1960 to 1975 ... CD
Trojan (UK), 1960s-Mid 70s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Excellent! An astounding 4CD set covering 15 years worth of fine Jamaican music, stopping at all the relevant points for novices, but digging deeply enough to unearth some nice hard to get bits for the initiated. The first disc in the set, Train To Skaville, represents an 8 year block during the formative years of the 60s, starting out with some Mento cuts, then a couple of nice Jamaican R& B numbers on through a nice batch of Ska. Disc 2, Do The Reggay, focus on the transition to Rocksteady and early reggae from 1968 to 1970, as the tempos started to get a little more laidback, and the dawn of the 70s gets highlighted with disc 3, Black & White: Reggae Rising. Disc 4, The Time Has Come, brings it all together collecting a tremendous batch of roots rock. 90 tracks in all, the set includes Derrick Morgan "Fat Man", Stranger Cole "Rough & Tough", Don Drummond & Tommy McCook "Music Is My Occupation", Roland Alphonso & The Soul Brothers "Phoenix City", Desmond Dekker & The Aces "Rudy Got Soul", Keith & Tex "Stop That Train", Toots & The Maytals "Do The Reggay", Lee Perry People Funny Boy", the Untouchables "Tighten Up", the Pioneers "Longshot Kick The Bucket", Gregory Isaacs "Don't Let Me Suffer", Harry J Allstars "The Liquidator", Niney "Blood & Fire", Ken Parker "Groovin Out On Life", Bob Marley & The Wailers "Small Axe", Horace Andy "I Fell Good All Over", Junior Byles "A Place Called Africa", Zap Pow "This Is Reggae Music", Slim Smith "The Time Has Come", Big Youth "S90 Skank", Burning Spear "Marcus Garvey", and way too many more to list here!
