A fantastic live performance from Soft Machine – done early in their career, and with a vibe that's maybe a bit different than some of the later, longer, more freewheeling concerts that have circulated on the market! Robert Wyatt's presence in the group is still very strong here, both on drums and vocals – and the record's got some shorter songs, but which still come across with all the power you'd expect from the trio of Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, and Hugh Hopper! A legendary album from the Brit psych scene at the end of the 60s – and one of the few records from that time that's still completely mindblowing all these many years later! Twink is John Alden, who'd had already had years of work behind him before putting together this set – including stints with Tomorrow and Pretty Things – and the direction here is very different than most of what was taking place at the time – much looser and more experimental, as the album seems to leap into very heady territory right from the start! There's no effort at putting out an easy single or crossover hit – and instead, some of these tunes have a sonic complexity that almost prefaces later more experimental work from the British scene, including the 80s industrial years – with one number that's just kind of a weird melange of voices, and another that's a lot of noise on drums, sitar, tablas, and effects – as well as a "pixie horn"! A few of the more vocal numbers – like the standout "Suicide" or "Three Little Piggies" – almost feel like work from Wicker Man – and other titles include "The Coming Of The One", "Ten Thousand Words In A Cardboard Box", "Fluid", "Dawn Of The Magic", "The Sparrow Is A Sign", and "Mexican Grass War". 2CD version features the full album in mono, then stereo – plus bonus tracks that include alternate versions of "Fluid", "Suicide", "10,000 Words In A Cardboard Box", "Dawn Of Magic", and "Rock An Roll The Joint". A really fantastic solo album from Gene Clark – his first effort after leaving The Byrds behind, and a really well-chosen collaboration with The Gosdin Brothers – who help Clark hit a lot more of a country vibe than he might have done otherwise! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of Gene's moody songwriting and vocal styles in the mix – but the Gosdin harmonies really help give the whole thing a special spin – maybe that mix of country roots and darkness that the Flying Burrito Brothers were about to unleash – yet given the world by Gene Clark a few years before! The whole thing's wonderful – as essential a piece of the LA country rock underground as any of Gram Parsons' albums – with titles that include "So You Could Say You Lost Your Baby", "Think I'm Gonna Feel Better", "Keep On Pushin", "Echoes", "Tried So Hard", "Elevator Operator", and "Couldn't Believe Her". CD features bonus tracks – remixed stereo versions of "Only Colombe" and "The French Girl" – and a previously unreleased acoustic demo of "So You Say You Lost Your Baby". CD

A great truck-themed album from bluegrass duo Jim & Jesse – one of those key records that shows the strange but fantastic merger of diesel themes and acoustic instrumentation! Most of the tunes here are tracks first made famous by other singers, but there's a great presentation that transforms the songs into Jim & Jesse's own – with balanced production by Billy Sherrill that brings in some key 60s country elements at times – but also leaves the boys to work with plenty of interplay of their own too. Titles include "Truck Drivin Man", "Lovin Machine", "Hot Rod Race", "Diesel On My Tail", "Sam's Place", "Ballad Of Thunder Road", "Girl On The Billboard", and "Tijuana Taxi". CD

A pair of country gems from the great Gary Stewart – back to back in a single set! First up is Out Of Hand, a seminal album from Gary Stewart – one of those key 70s records that helped establish him as a rising star on the bandstand and the barrooms – thanks in part to some very booze-oriented tracks on the set! The record's got two classics that really define Gary's sound – the seminal "Drinkin Thing" and "She's Actin Single (I'm Drinkin Doubles)" – which are a great update of older drinking themed country cuts, but with a much more vibrant 70s approach, one that shows the way that rock music was sliding in to influence crossover stars like Gary! The whole thing's great, though – and the record's filled with other great tracks that include "Sweet Country Red", "Back Slider's Wine", "Draggin Shackles", and "Out Of Hand". Brand New is a set that Gary Stewart cut away from some of his major label fame, and a record that maybe has him burning even more strongly in the setting – working with a leaner sort of production that puts him in the territory of some of the younger up-and-comers of the generation, and which also shows just how much his 70s material might have been an influence to them! Stewart's still got that incredible voice that few others can match – inflections that really send the tunes home – on titles that include "Son Of A Honky Tonk Woman", "Brand New Whiskey", "An Empty Glass", "Murdered By Love", "Romona", and "I Get Drunk".
