Hampton Hawes/Herbie Nichols/John Mehegan/Paul SmiI Just Love Jazz Piano ... CD
Savoy/Nippon (Japan), Mid 50s. Used ... $9.99
An odd little album on Savoy – one that collects material from 4 different pianists, packaged with a sexy title, and a cover that has a lusty redhead really "loving" the piano! The best material on here, in our opinion, is the Herbie Nichols work – rare non-Blue Note/Bethlehem work that has him supposedly working with a quartet (although we only hear three instruments on the session!), on tunes that include "Nichols & Dimes", "Who's Blues", and "S'Wonderful". Other tunes include "Jumpin Jacques" and "Thou Swell" by Hampton Hawes; "Blues Too Much" and "Thou Swell" (again!) by John Mehegan; and "Together" and "Apart" by Paul Smith. CD

Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About May 29, 2024
One of the few albums ever recorded by pianist Herbie Nichols – an incredible player with a sound and sense of modern expression that rivaled the best 50s work of Thelonious Monk and Elmo Hope! This session is Herbie's only one for the Bethlehem label – but it stands nicely next to his better-known sides for Blue Note – with a stark, sharp modernist approach that grabs you from the very first note! Nichols has a sharp and edgey sound throughout – and an incredible sense of invention that never fails to delight us, no matter how many times we return to the record! Titles include "Every Cloud", "S'Crazy Pad", "45 Degree Angle", "Beyond Recall", "Portrait of Ucha", and the beautiful title track "Love Gloom Cash Love". CD

VariousWe Are Ten – The Birthday Presents Heavenly Sweetness 10 (limited numbered edition) ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2017. Near Mint- 2LP ... $14.99
The Heavenly Sweetness label celebrates its first ten years in business – with a special birthday present of all-exclusive unreleased tracks! This set doesn't look back at the previous decade of the label, but instead points the way forward – with a wonderful selection of newly-recorded tracks by some of hte label's best artists – including some who've helped define their groove strongly in recent years, and some whose talents are soon to be presenting full length sets for the company! As with the previous ten years of records, the music here is a fantastic blend of new styles and global elements – some strands of soul, jazz, and hip hop influences – but often used in ways that are completely fresh and contemporary – at a level that's made Heavenly Sweetness one of our go-to labels for new and interesting sounds over the past decade. Titles include "You Party Too Much" by The Mule, "O Circo" by Cotonete", "Have A Little Faith" by Blundetto and Ken Boothe, "An Ba Galba" by Roger Raspail and Vincent Segal, "Tijan Ka (2017 version)" by Edmondy Krater and I Live, "Tijan (Hugh LX rmx)" by Edmondy Krater, "F*ck With The Police" by Florian Pellissier Quintet with Roger Raspail and Nawer, "Hip Hop Muse (Lefto rmx)" by Rongetz Foundation, "Be The River" by Anthony Joseph and Hanyo, and "Move In Silence" by Guts with Patrice, Feve, Djeuhdjoah, and Lieutenant Nicholson. ✨✧ Herbie NicholsHerbie Nichols Trio ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1955/1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most exciting piano jazz ever recorded – and one of the rare few albums released by the legendary Herbie Nichols! Nichols' firm-handed style is amazing throughout, and the record explodes with energy unheard of on other trio sessions from the time – a fantastic blend of modern ideas and really dynamic work on the piano – certainly of the bop generation, but with all the explosive elements of Thelonious Monk at his best. Part of the credit probably goes to Max Roach, who does a fantastic job backing Herbie up, in a trio that also includes Teddy Kotick on bass – but Nichols' overall conception is without compare, and the whole darn thing's pretty fantastic! Titles include "Chit Chatting", "The Gig", "Terpsichore", "Spinning Song", and "Query". 50s bop modernism at its best! CD

Sandy Salisbury & Curt BoettcherTry For The Sun ... LP
Sundazed, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $25.99 26.99
Incredible early work from Curt Boettcher and Sandy Salisbury – best known for their collaboration in the fantastic groups Ballroom and Millennium – but heard here in a set of intimate demos the pair recorded around the same time! There's plenty of Sunshine Pop genius on these cuts, even if the production isn't at a full studio level – as the tunes are wonderful even at the core, and the vocals by either of the pair really make the magic of the tunes shine through – with a warmth and intimacy that's even more striking than some of their better-known material. We'd rank this right up there with similar material from Roger Nichols and Paul Williams – and titles include "Spell On Me", "Opus To A Friend", "Really & Truly", "Sweet Tangerine", "Next Day Sad", "Love Is Good", "Soft Words", "The Sun Is Shining Now", and "Oops". ✨✧ Max RoachFeaturing The Legendary Hasaan ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very unusual album from Max Roach – and one that continues his great 50s trend of seeking out some of the freshest players in jazz! The set's a rare trio outing for Max – and it features some incredible piano work by a musician named Hasaan – a player we only know from this set, but who's a cooking modernist with a vibe that ranks him right up there with postwar greats like Thelonious Monk, Randy Weston, and Herbie Nichols! With references like those, you can bet there's plenty of sharp edges in the piano – but the tunes also have a subtle, soulful feel too – a sense of humanity that's really wonderful. The album includes the tracks "Off My Back Jack", "Almost Like Me", "To Inscribe", "Pay Not Play Not", and "Din-Ka Stret", all written by Hasaan. CD

Wonderful work from one of Merle Haggard's greatest duet partners – later life partner Leona Williams, whose vocals are already incredible, even without Merle on board! The pair co-produced the set with a mighty nice vibe, and there's plenty of guitar from Roy Nichols, Haggard's longtime accompanist – on titles that include "Waitin On The Good Life To Come", "Don't Ever Let Your Lover Sleep Alone", "Heart To Heart Talk", "Let's Pretend We're Not Married Tonight", "You Can't Break The Chains Of Love", and "We're Strangers Again". ✨✧ Henry ThreadgillEasily Slip Into Another World ... CD
Novus/BMG, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nice little set from Henry Threadgill – one of the albums that gave him greatest exposure to a bigger audience, and a set that pushes the sound of his work nicely! The record's got some of those touches from a time when the AACM was reaching out with its sound from earlier years – a mode that's not exactly more inside, but certainly more overtly expressive about its intentions, and sometimes a bit more melodically focused than freely improvisatory. There's echoes here of work the Art Ensemble and Amina Claudine Myers were doing during the same stretch – and the lack of commercial success of the record shouldn't indicate any aesthetic failure at all. Asha Puthli makes a surprising vocal appearance on the track "My Rock", and other players include Frank Lacy, Diedre Murray, Fred Hopkins, Pheeroan Aklaff, and Reggie Nicholson. Titles include "Award The Squadtett", "Hall", "Spotted Duck Is Pudding", and "I Can't Wait Till I Get Home". CD

✨✧ Keith Tippett's ArkFrames – Music For An Imaginary Film ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1978. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A seminal recording from Keith Tippett's Ark – a large ensemble of British avant players that coexisted with (and shared members from) Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath! The set was recorded at a time when many on the scene where exploring territory that could only be reached with a larger group – pushing the boundaries of British jazz with a forcefulness borrowed from more progressive experiments – yet still at the best moments (such as this recording), keeping things restrained enough to let even the smallest voices and ideas be heard. Both Keith Tippett & Stan Tracey are on piano – and other players include Elton Dean, Trevor Watts, Harry Miller, Peter Kowald, Phil Wachsman and Louis Moholo – plus vocals from Julie Tippetts and Maggie Nichols. The expanded set features 4 side-long compositions – and although the degree to which they were "composed" isn't explicit, because there's a lot of fiery free playing and interplay, the album's not without focus or direction, and never descends into a din, as a group this large might verge upon. Titles include "Frames", parts 1 to 4. CD

✨✧ Mal WaldronImpressions ... LP
New Jazz, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Incredible early work from Mal Waldron – a trio session, but one with a lot of dark edges! The group features Addison Farmer on bass and Al Heath on drums – and the tracks are played with lots of shades of blue – and a nicely restrained modern edge that still has plenty of the soul Waldron was bringing to Prestige blowing sides of the late 50s, mixed with a sense of modernism that shows him advancing into territory of Randy Weston and Herbie Nichols! The record's a pivotal chapter in Waldron's career – definitely full of the sorts of impressions promised in the title – and tunes include the incredible "Champs Elysees", plus "Ciao", "All About Us", and "C'est Formidable". ✨✧ CityNow That Everything's Been Said ... LP
Ode, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful early project from Carole King – work that predates her well-known solo career of the 70s, and which is infinitely hipper overall! The groove here is a blend of the soulful roots that Carole was crafting for other artists on her compositions of the 60s – mixed with some of the hipper singer-songwriter modes of the late 60s – put together at a level that still quite far from cliches that would later mar the genre. The group's a trio – with Carole on piano and vocals, Danny Kootch Kortchmar on guitar and added vocals, and Charles Larkey on bass – and the overall feel is somewhere in the neighborhood of Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends, with a similar sense of freshness that would hardly be replicated again. Lou Adler did some great production on the record – and tracks include the group's great version of "Snow Queen", plus "Why Are You Leaving", "I Don't Believe It", "All My Time", "Victim Of Circumstance", "Now That Everything's Been Said", and "Man Without A Dream". Hasaan Ibn Ali (Hasaan)Reaching For The Stars – Trios/Duos/Solos ... CD
Omnivore, Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
Early genius from the legendary pianist Hasaan – an artist most people know for his famous Atlantic album with Max Roach, but who steps out here in a set of earlier material that's completely amazing! The set begins with six trio tracks – performed in a group with Henry Grimes on bass and Kalil Madi on drums – a combo who carve out space that's completely their own, taking some of the 50s modern piano ideas of Herbie Nichols and Thelonious Monk, but letting them loose with even more imagination – yet also avoiding any too-free modes as well. The balance is incredible – on all original titles that include "Viceroy", "Pay Not Play Not", "Off My Back Jack", "Almost Like Me", and "Dinka Street". Next are three long tracks that feature the vocals of Muriel Gilliam (aka Muriel Winston from her Strata East days), singing alongside Hasaan's piano on these really amazing takes on standards – stretched out, and given lots of sharp edges – on takes of "Embraceable You", "Stella By Starlight", and "Body & Soul". Last up are two very long solo tracks – stunningly imaginative versions of "After You've Gone" and "End Of A Love Affair". CD

Timmion, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An instrumental version of the set that the group cut with Jeb Loy Nichols – and one that's really overflowing with the group's wonderful deep funk vibe! The core group features Hammond, bass, and drums – but there's also some added horns on the top, handled by Jukka Eskola – who you might know from his own groovy records, and who really helps add a whole layer of classic soul to the set! Most tunes are in a lightly-tripping version of funk – mellow and laidback, in a way that's not too far from the El Michel's side of the spectrum, but captured with more of the edge of some rare indie label 45. Titles include "My Love", "Like A Rainy Day", "Cry Me Another One", "Living It Up", "Not There Yet", "Help Me Along", "The World Loves A Fool", and "We Gotta Work On It". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Paul WilliamsSomeday Man (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Reprise/Now Sounds (UK), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Paul Williams' greatest albums – produced by his friend and frequent collaborator Roger Nichols, with a style that's very much like the best work the pair recorded together! The songs are some of Williams' best – really warm and intimate numbers, done in a heartfelt style that lacks all the cloying touches of some of his later work – or that of bad interpretations of his work by other artists. Arrangements are by the cream of LA hipsters – Nichols, Perry Botkin, Chad Stuart, and Artie Butler – and the record has a mutedly groovy feel! Titles include "Time", "Roan Pony", "I Know You", "To Put Up With You", "Someday Man", and "So Many People". This great remastered UK edition has 12 bonus tracks: instrumental versions of "Someday Man", "So Many People", "Mornin' I'll Be Movin' On" and "To Put Up With You", sessions recordings of "Someday Man" and "The Drifter", plus mono versions several album tracks and a couple demo versions.
