The larger posse is pictured on the back cover, with a down to earth image that's a nice contrast to the trippy vibe of the front – and that may well be the best illustration of the group's changing spirit during this key year – as they shake off a bit of the hippie stink, and settle into even more serious musicianship overall. Three 6 Mafia may not have hit world domination with this set – but the record is a landmark in the growth of southern hip hop at the end of the 90s, and is a downright classic from the Memphis group! In some ways, the record takes off a bit from Texas sounds of a few years before – even some of the Geto Boys sense of terror mixed with paranoia – that undercurrent of personal struggle that can often redeem records like this, and take them past just thuggish cliches. A rare solo outing from vocalist Maria Cole – quite possibly because she was best known to the rest of the world as Mrs Nat King Cole! Maria's a dusky-voiced singer who worked with Duke Ellington in the 50s, but is getting a much sweeter touch here from arranger Billy Vaughn – who uses additional backing vocals next to Cole on the record, in that singer-meets-chorus style that was fading at the time, but still done by Vaughn better than most of his peers. The approach is fine, although it does overshadow Cole's unusual vocal style a bit – but given the strange and moody feel of her voice, the added singers actually create this odd sense of counterpoint that's pretty unique, and which makes the record stand out from most of the other work on Dot at the time. Elzhi serves up plenty of great lyrical work here, but our favorite aspect of the record may be the work of Oh No – who definitely takes the title seriously, and uses plenty of vibes throughout! This may well be the best vibes-driven hip hop project we've ever heard – as each track has some very strong use of the warmly chromatic instrument, but in ways that shift up nicely – used in a strong Madlib-styled way, but balanced with some sharper cuts around the edges. Brilliant soul from the Detroit underground of the late 60s – a full set of work by vocalist Little Ann, issued here for the first time ever! You might recognize Ann's name from her appearance on a few of the Ace/Kent Records issues of material by Detroit producer Dave Hamilton over the years – and the work here all comes from those classic collaborations with Hamilton – trapped on tape for many years, always contemplated as a possible Little Ann album – but only issued in full all these many years later! The groove here is as offbeat as some of Dave's other great work – not nearly as tight, or uptight, as Motown music – and instead, done with a sly undercurrent of darkness on most numbers, even the mellower ones – almost that earliest mix of Detroit styles that you get on pre-fame singles from Westbound Records artists. Ann's vocals are nice and lean, and slide right into the mix with ease – heartfelt enough to grab us right away, yet without any obvious cliches as well. Hard-swinging jazz featuring drummer Specs Powell – and a tight batch of Basie-esque players, grooving along on a number of short lively tracks that are almost in the Count Basie style of the Roulette years! The lineup features alto and baritone sax from Sahib Shihab, tenor and clarinet from Aaron Sachss, alto and flute from George Dorsey, trumpet from Ray Copeland and Leon Merian, and trombones from Jimmy Dahl and Jimmy Cleveland – and piano is handled by Hank Jones and Nat Pierce, the latter of whom really knows how to make a group like this swing nicely! The group have help from plenty of guests here – maybe more so than they would have had back in the day, but very much in keeping with the legacy they inspired – in a lineup that includes Questlove, DJ Premier, Cypress Hill, Impossebulls, Black Thought, Nas, YG, Run DMC, Mike D, Ad Rock, and even George Clinton! Sun Ra's first album as a leader – originally issued on the Transition label, but presented here in its better-known incarnation by Delmark Records! Even at this early point, Ra had a sound unlike any of his contemporaries – large group and modern, but not in a way that showed any similarities to work going on in New York or LA – a voice that was all his own, and already quite boldly stated, even in these early years! The format might be somewhat familiar – an ensemble with horns and rhythm – but the overall execution really starts to open up as the album moves on – with odd phrasings, timings, and unusual moments that live up to all the promise you might expect from Ra. Even Mingus and some of his better-known contemporaries weren't heading in these directions in the mid 50s – and the record is a proud showcase of the freedoms that players were often accorded in the less-trafficked Chicago scene of the time. Horns include Art Hoyle & Dave Young on trumpets, John Gilmore on tenor sax, Pat Patrick on baritone, Julian Priester on trombone, and James Scales on alto sax – and rhythm includes Jim Herndon on tympani, Robert Barry on drums, Wilbur Green on electric bass, and a young Richard Evans on acoustic bass! One of the most mind-expanding albums we've ever heard from Jack Bruce – a really strong outing from 1974, one that shows him growing and growing as an artists in his years away from Cream! The tracks have a feel that's a bit more wiry than some of Bruce's other solo work – stripped down so that the jazzy changes emerge a bit more, and Bruce's vocals come to the forefront – singing in a style that's oddly confident, but still possessed of all the quirks that have always made them so striking. In a way, the record's a nice compression of certain progressive ideals – all filtered down into the singer-songwriter mode with surprising intimacy. Titles include "Keep It Down", "Pieces Of Mind", "Golden Days", "Timeslip", "One", and "Running Through Our Hands". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe one of the most amazing debut records of all time – not only the record that first exposed the world to Roberta Flack, but a set that heralded so many changes to come in the following decade! Flack's genius here is almost impossible to put into words – part jazz, part soul, and completely righteous from the very first note – possessed of a sense of pride and power that belie both her understated image on the front cover, and her relatively young age – and delivered with a timelessness that still makes the record as vital today as it was so many years back. The set features Flack playing piano and singing with her trio – sometimes augmented by larger arrangements by the very hip William S Fischer, but often in a setting that's very spare yet incredibly moving – instantly putting Roberta at the same level as Nina Simone, and maybe even past the territory of Aretha Franklin at the time. Titles include her seminal reading of "Compared To What" – an instant anthem for the time – plus the tracks "Angelitos Negros", "Our Ages Or Our Hearts", and "Tryin Times". CD

Bill Laswell returns to his roots – working here in a setting that's loose, open, and relatively improvised – as Bill's electric bass carves out these wonderfully spacious, tuneful lines alongside the drums and percussion of Milford Graves! Given all of Laswell's higher-concept and heavily-processed work over the years, we sometimes forget that at his core, he can still be a sensitive jazz musician – especially when working in the right setting, which definitely seems to be the case here. The tracks are long, but never meandering – and Bill's basswork not only grounds the record and gives it structure, but also seems to really set Graves free to open up in nicely complex ways. An overlooked soul jazz treasure from the early 90s – the debut as a leader by saxophonist Zane Massey, and still possibly his greatest record to date! Massey's the son of jazz composer/trumpeter Cal Massey – and the vibe here is similar to that of his father's best music – sophisticated, but never too heady – done with a nicely understated quality, yet still quite possessed of its own musical vision. Massey's got a great tone on his tenor here – sharp, but never too bitten – and the instrumentation features only saxophone, bass, and drums – in a style that reminds us a bit of the freedoms of Sonny Rollins in the late 50s, yet also with a consciousness of the 60s ESP and 70s loft jazz generations. Massey hits some incredibly soulful moments here – at a level that was hardly being recorded this well at the time – and titles include "Nu Kingdom", "Trickle Down Economics", "Message From Trane", "Through The Eyes Of A Child", "Assunta", "Walk Right In", and "Ms Magic". A great debut from Taylor McFerrin – family member to another famous jazz singer, but very much possessed of his own self and style! The album's got this crackling, glistening quality – subtle electronics and Fender Rhodes mixing with Taylor's well-crafted vocals – never overwhelming them, but taking them into a space that's beyond conventional soul or jazz – and completely hypnotic throughout! Robert Glasper guests on one track on the set – and McFerrin's approach is a bit like some of the most creative elements in Glasper's Black Radio experiment – and other guests on the record include Emily King, Nai Palm, and Thundercat. Sun Ra's first album as a leader – originally issued on the Transition label, but presented here in its better-known incarnation by Delmark Records! Even at this early point, Ra had a sound unlike any of his contemporaries – large group and modern, but not in a way that showed any similarities to work going on in New York or LA – a voice that was all his own, and already quite boldly stated, even in these early years! The format might be somewhat familiar – an ensemble with horns and rhythm – but the overall execution really starts to open up as the album moves on – with odd phrasings, timings, and unusual moments that live up to all the promise you might expect from Ra. Even Mingus and some of his better-known contemporaries weren't heading in these directions in the mid 50s – and the record is a proud showcase of the freedoms that players were often accorded in the less-trafficked Chicago scene of the time. Horns include Art Hoyle & Dave Young on trumpets, John Gilmore on tenor sax, Pat Patrick on baritone, Julian Priester on trombone, and James Scales on alto sax – and rhythm includes Jim Herndon on tympani, Robert Barry on drums, Wilbur Green on electric bass, and a young Richard Evans on acoustic bass! Amazing work by one of the greatest lost soul bands of the late 60s! As the name would imply, Art and the group are a gospel outfit – but when they worked on Capitol, they got some great hip production that put them in an LA pop soul groove, similar to Friends of Distinction or other mixed vocal groups of the time. The tracks are not really so religious as they are spiritual, and the album's got a wonderfully progressive sound to it – very righteous, with none of the cliches you'd expect. These guys are a bit like the Staple Singers, but to our ears, they've got a style that's even fresher, and usually a lot tighter. Although Roach could have easily rested on his laurels as a famous bop drummer – and have spent endless years touring on highly-paid revival/reunion tours – he was a true creative giant who never stopped expanding his talents, especially during the late 70s, when he was matching up with some of the greats of the avant garde. This album is a perfect example of that commitment to modernism, as Roach duets with Anthony Braxton on a set of 7 fantastic tracks that stand apart from individual work by either artist – more loose and open than earlier Roach work, but a bit more inside than some of Braxton's – with fresh results from both players that never fail to delight! Very cool, very groovy soundtrack from this Italian film about satanic ritual and demonic possession! The great Piero Umiliani serves up a wide-ranging batch of tracks, from breezy vocal pop numbers (with vocals by Shirley Hammer), to spooky funk instrumentals with a sort of "haunted feel", to some surprisingly-placed Brazilian inspiration (actually recorded in Brazil, with performances by Wilson Das Neves)! Insane stuff, but wildly entertaining throughout, and with mix of moods, all incredible! One of the greatest female soul records ever to come from Chicago – a killer set of work from the legendary Ruby Andrews! Ruby's a hell of a talent that should have been huge at a national level – possessed with a deep soul style that matched the best from Betty Lavette or Mavis Staples, but often set up in more sophisticated arrangements too – in a mode that worked perfectly in a "double-edged sword" model that was often employed by other Chicago singers, like Barbara Acklin or Patty Drew. The album was issued as a follow-up to Ruby's massive cut "Casanova", which is a perfect example of this style – with Ruby's raw vocals over the top, some loping string arrangements underneath, and the whole thing working perfectly together in an amazing blend of styles! The whole album's incredibly strong, and other tracks include "Casanova 70", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", "Tit For Tat", and "Can You Get Away". CD

Maybe one of the most amazing debut records of all time – not only the record that first exposed the world to Roberta Flack, but a set that heralded so many changes to come in the following decade! Flack's genius here is almost impossible to put into words – part jazz, part soul, and completely righteous from the very first note – possessed of a sense of pride and power that belie both her understated image on the front cover, and her relatively young age – and delivered with a timelessness that still makes the record as vital today as it was so many years back. The set features Flack playing piano and singing with her trio – sometimes augmented by larger arrangements by the very hip William S Fischer, but often in a setting that's very spare yet incredibly moving – instantly putting Roberta at the same level as Nina Simone, and maybe even past the territory of Aretha Franklin at the time. Titles include her seminal reading of "Compared To What" – an instant anthem for the time – plus the tracks "Angelitos Negros", "Our Ages Or Our Hearts", and "Tryin Times". CD

Ray Greene was the vocalist in Tower of Power for a number of years, but with a record like this, it's clear that he's more than deserving to be out front on his own – as a soul singer with a range that lives up to some of the greats from years back, yet possessed of this very personal quality that really sets him apart from the rest! Greene sings here in a way that's free from some of the more standard modes or overdone cliches that could hold a record like this back – yet at the same time, he's also got a confidence and power that could easily push the record over the top – on titles that include "Tears Away", "Stay", "Jealous", "Tell Her", "Shoulda Known Better", "Hole In Our Hearts", and "Coming Home". Obscure disco work from Doris Jones – a good fit here for the upbeat arrangements of the tunes! Pip Williams handled most of the arrangements here – and all tracks were written and produced by Ian Levine – done in that sparkling style of some of his other US disco work of the late 70s. An early treasure from the legendary Music De Wolfe sound library in London – a project that mixes all the incredible ear for sound possessed by composer Basil Kirchin with some groovier touches from John Coleman – all at a level that may well make the album one of the most compelling that Basil ever recorded! Make no mistake, we love Kirchin in all of his modes – but there's also a more upbeat, swinging, and jazzy vibe to this record than some of his others – yet still handled with this incredible ear for tones, timings, colors, and phrasing that go way beyond the usual – served up with shifting instrumentation that includes guitar, flute, vibes, and plenty more too! An overlooked soul jazz treasure from the early 90s – the debut as a leader by saxophonist Zane Massey, and still possibly his greatest record to date! Massey's the son of jazz composer/trumpeter Cal Massey – and the vibe here is similar to that of his father's best music – sophisticated, but never too heady – done with a nicely understated quality, yet still quite possessed of its own musical vision. Massey's got a great tone on his tenor here – sharp, but never too bitten – and the instrumentation features only saxophone, bass, and drums – in a style that reminds us a bit of the freedoms of Sonny Rollins in the late 50s, yet also with a consciousness of the 60s ESP and 70s loft jazz generations. Massey hits some incredibly soulful moments here – at a level that was hardly being recorded this well at the time – and titles include "Nu Kingdom", "Trickle Down Economics", "Message From Trane", "Through The Eyes Of A Child", "Assunta", "Walk Right In", and "Ms Magic".
