NickBrignola featuring Pepper Adams —
Baritone Madness ... LP Beehive, 1977. Near Mint- ...

Baritone madness, and a lot more too – a set that's full of surprises, and which may well be one of the most striking records on the Beehive label from Chicago! The date not only features twin terrors on baritone sax – NickBrignola and Pepper Adams, both blowing at the height of their powers – but it also includes a very unusual group of players alongside them – modern giant Ted Curson on trumpet and flugelhorn, avant bassist Dave Holland, incredible drummer Roy Haynes, and British pianist Derek Smith. The unlikely meeting of players comes off wonderfully here – and most tracks are nice and long, with lots of blowing session room for solos! Tracks include "Billie's Bounce", "Donna Lee", "Marmeduke", "Alone Together", and "Body & Soul". LP, Vinyl record album
Phil Woods on alto sax and clarinet – with Tom Harrell on trumpet and flugelhorn, NickBrignola on baritone sax, Hal Crook on trombone, Nelson Hill on tenor sax, Hal Galper on piano, Steve Gilmore on bass, and Bill Goodwin on drums. CD
Hard driving work by Ted Curson! Jubilant Power is a pretty apt title for the set – played with a celebratory fire – combining the freer loft-style playing of his late 70s American work, with some of the tighter grooving rhythmic approaches of his early 70s sides in France. Chris Woods, a frequent partner from the Paris years, is in the group on alto and flute, cutting lines that match Curson's as well recallung the tenor of Bill Barron during the 60s. Other players include Andy Laverne and Jim McNeely on piano, NickBrignola on alto sax and flute, Bob Merigliano on drums and Sam Jacobs on conga. Excellent stuff! Titles include "Marjo", "Song Of The Lonely", "Reava's Waltz", "Airi's Tune", "Searchin For The Blues" and "Ted's Tempo". CD
A very rare gem from the late 50s – a smoking set that was cut for a very small label, but which is every bit as great from a musical perspective as it is from a collector's one as well! The whole thing cooks with the insensity of a Prestige date from the early 50s – very sharp hardbop energy throughout, spurred on by the work of leader Reese Markewich on piano – in a group that also features tremendous tenor from Jesse Avery, a player who don't really know at all, but who brings an especially sharp edge to the set! Reese also plays a bit of flute – and the quintet also includes NickBrignola on baritone and alto sax, Steve Fillo on bass and Ronnie Zito on drums – all players with a very cohesive, hard-swinging sound. The set's got a number of great original tunes – and titles include "Hurricane Connie", "Pony", "Mildew", "Flute Street", "Crazy In The Heart", "Moonlight In Vermont", and "Last Lap". CD

Sal Nistico —
Neo/Nistico ... LP Beehive, 1978. Near Mint- ...

Fantastic small group work from tenorist Sal Nistico – and one of the few records that really finds a way to capture his genius! Sal got his start in the Woody Herman band of the 60s – and although a standout there, he really shines even more brightly here in a small group setting – with a sharp edge on his horn that maybe only comes through this well in a handful of his European recordings, especially for the Ego label. In the spirit of that imprint, the great trumpeter Ted Curson is on board – and Sal's tone is also balanced out nicely by some equally great work from NickBrignola on baritone. The rest of the combo is equally great – with superb rhythm from Ronnie Mathews on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and titles include "Be My Love", "Blues For KD", "Bambu", "Fee Fi Fo Fum", and "Anthropology". LP, Vinyl record album
