A really nice batch of early 80s soul from Loose Ends – one of the best-remembered groups who were making strong soul music in Britain in the period – but who actually recorded this excellent first album at Philadelphia's Alpha Studios! Forget the cheesy title and cover – this is a great compilation, with some really wonderful tracks from the 70s! Like the first set in this series, the focus is on older grooves that have a kicked-back, chilled-out approach to funk – and as such, the set is stuffed with wonderful tunes that we might have missed otherwise! There's a real genius to the package – similar to Irma's Quiet Moments compilation – and the track selection goes way past the obvious, or the familiar, to include tracks that have been locked away on older albums by artists that you might already know. The great live compilation of classic Hendrix – pulled from incendiary performances at Isle Of Wight in 1970 and other benchmark west coast gigs from '68 to '70! An incredible record from Billie Holiday – and not really a proper sort of "album" at all! Instead, the set features the posthumous release of tapes from sessions recorded with pianist Jimmy Rowles and bassist Artie Shapiro – tracks that feature Billie singing in a looser mode than on Verve, but also talking a fair bit too! The conversation is what really makes the record – as it shows a bad-rapping Billie who's often a lot more self-possessed than you'd guess from the sadder sound of her classic recordings. Her voice is easily recognizable, but the subject matter is often quite surprising – and surprisingly well-recorded. The album is loosely based around ideas and writings from The Medium Is The Massage – McLuhan's important 1967 book, co-written with Quentin Fiore – and represented here as a wild sound collage that blends together music, sounds, media snippets, and readings by McLuhan, Fiore, and a host of other voices! The album's actually much more of a "happening" than a spoken word album – a real studio party that's cut up and messed up by all the added effects, sounds, and music – genius that comes from Jerome Agel, who put the whole project together – and delivered it to the loving hands of John Simon, who produced some other wonderful records of this nature for late 60s Columbia. A real delight throughout – and the kind of an album we wish people still kept making! Great reissue package – in a gatefold LP-styled sleeve, with additional artwork, rare photos, full notes on the sessions, and more! CD

A really fantastic album from tenorist Harold Land – a very rare Japanese set that may well blow away even his best albums of the 70s! The record features pianist Makoto Tarashita in the lead – a strongly spiritual player with a nicely modal sensibility – spun out over long tracks that have wonderful energy, and which seem to set Land loose on these solos that are full of life and imagination, and a sense of soul that he doesn't always bring to the studio! The rest of the group features Yasushi Yoneki on bass, Mike Reznikoff on drums, and Takayuki Koizumi on percussion – and the percussion really adds a lot to the songs, picking up the rhythmic core, while also giving them a nicely organic vibe too. Titles include "Dragon Dance", "Takeuma", "Crossing", "World Peace", "Dear Friends", and "I Ha To Bo". CD

An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) Beautiful images from the late 70s onwards – posters, advertisements, album covers, and lots of other visual creations used to help showcase the new sounds and styles of the punk and new wave generation! The book is better than we even could have hoped – as it's not just a loose collection of classic records, and instead is a really thoughtful presentation of a wide array of media – divided up into sections that really make sense, often with a fair bit of history and other detail that really illuminates this new movement in style! The book is split in half – half US, and half UK – but also does a great job of linking the images to global trends in aesthetics too. A hefty 335 pages, hardcover, and full color throughout! Book

A rare late 50s live date from saxophonist Harold Land – released here for the first time ever! But the set's not as noteworthy for the rarity of the date as it is for the strength of the group – an amazing quartet of modernists that includes Elmo Hope on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Lennie McBrowne on drums – all working with Land's tenor on a batch of incredibly long tracks that have a looser, freer feel than anything Harold did in the studio during the 50s! The performance took place at the Cellar Club in Vancouver in November of 1958 – and there's an open-ended, well-blown quality that reminds us of Land's work with Max Roach a few years before – somewhat boppish, and always soulful. Later work from Chet Baker – served up here in a 3CD package! The first 2CDs feature the Sesjun Radio Shows albums – rare radio material from Chet Baker – all recorded in the Netherlands, with wonderful sound – and brought together here in a two volume series that offers up some excellent unreleased material from his later years! The tunes and performances are maybe a bit different than some of the looser live dates that Baker recorded for other labels – although many of the performances are quite long, and showcase that advance solo approach that makes Chet's later work so different than the shorter tracks on his early albums. Titles include "Chet's Theme", "Lady Bird", "Just Friends", "Blue N Boogie", "Ray's Idea", "This Is Always", and "I'm Old Fashioned". Straight From The Heart is material from the last concert Chet Baker ever recorded – a surprisingly tight session that has the trumpeter blowing solos in front of the NDR Big Band. The setting is relatively relaxed – not a blasting big band session, but one that colors in the space between Baker's notes with gentle shades of sound – really respecting his role as a soloist, and providing just the right amount of gentle accompaniment to flesh out the sound of the set. Chet sings on 2 numbers – "My Funny Valentine" and "I Get Along Without You Very Well" – and other tracks include "Sippin At Bells", "Conception", "Look For The Silver Lining", and "Tenderly". The session breaks out a bit from some of Chambers' more concept-based work of the time – and has him opening up strongly with an all-star group that includes Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Wynton Kelly on piano, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The setting's a bit loose, almost a blowing session – and Chambers holds it together perfectly, almost acting as more of a sideman on the session, and letting the bigger-name soloists get plenty of space to do their thing! One of the all-time Vee Jay jazz classics – with titles that include "Just Friends", "I Got Rhythm", "Ease It", "Awful Mean", and "Julie Ann". A trio of classics from this groundbreaking group! First up is Living With The Animals – fantastic early work from Mother Earth – one of those special late 60s groups who emerged out of the rock, folk, and blues scenes – but who somehow managed to make a very special sound of their own! Part of the group's strength is the lovely Tracey Nelson – a singer who could have been a soul artist if she wanted – but who works here with a looser approach to generic conventions as she moves through a number of different modes – sometimes stepping aside for the group's lead singer, R Powell St John Jr, who also plays a bit of harmonica. Instrumentation is given some stronger currents from a combo that features Mike Bloomfield on guitar, Barry Goldberg on organ, and Luis Gasca on trumpet – and titles include "Marvel Group", "Mother Earth", "It Won't Be Long", "Down So Low", "The Kingdom Of Heaven", and "My Love Will Never Die". Make A Joyful Noise is an album that has slightly fuller backings than their debut, but in a way that only seems to bring out more of the soulful currents of their sound! The mix of rural inspiration and tighter presentation is a great illustration of the changing North Cali style of the period – and no surprise, a young Boz Scaggs is in the group, providing rhythm guitar next to the vocals of Tracy Nelson and R Powell St John. A few country legends provide extra support on fiddle, dobro, and steel – balanced nicely by a strong horn section too – on titles that include "Stop The Train", "Soul Of The Man", "Blues For The Road", "Come On & See", "I The Fly", "Wait Wait Wait", "I Wanna Be Your Mama Again", and "Then I'll Be Moving On". Last up is Satisfied – countrified rock from Tracy Nelson and Mother Earth – done in a warm and sincere style that goes way beyond any of the cliches of the genre! There's something about the way the group put together the tunes that really makes us like this one – an honesty that's not bogged down in any hippy dippy expectations, and which never tries to be anything other that what it is. And yes, that's not much of a good description of the set – but it's also our way of identifying the uniqueness that set Mother Earth apart from a lot of their contemporaries. Starpoint's getting a bit loose and free with their fashions on the cover of this one – but the grooves themselves are tighter than ever! If anything, Starpoint seems to be a lot more confident than before – working in a mode that's completely free from late 70s trends, but which also doesn't fall into the traps of others of their generation – a sound that's electric and funky, yet also plenty darn soulful too. Renee Diggs' vocals are completely great on the album – bringing in a depth that's really appreciated, and giving the group a much more well-rounded sound than so many other all male ensemble funk acts of the time. Ballads and mellower numbers are every bit as great as the groovers too – and titles include "All Night Long", "Get Your Body Up", "Bring Your Sweet Lovin Back", "Show Me", "I Can Give You Love", and "It's You". A killer combination of sounds served up by a group led by a tenor saxophonist – but one who chooses to make music that's very different than the norm! Otis Sandsjo has a way of phrasing that's very fresh, and almost electronic at times – which blends in perfectly with the chunky sounds from his trio-mates Petter Eldh on bass and Dan Nicholls on keyboards – players who all have a way of letting loose, cutting things up, and allowing production to layer in all these other sonic and rhythmic elements along the way!
