One of the best of the blacksploitation scores of the early 70s – a masterpiece of music that we rate every bit as high as Shaft or Superfly – maybe even higher! The music here is incredible – a surprising funky turn for JJ Johnson, who most folks know for his straighter jazz work – and like Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and others who were surprising the world with their ability to score music for a full film during the early 70s, JJ really knocks it out of the park with this one – coming up with a batch of tunes that are a wonderful mix of sophisticated scoring, creative instrumentation, and some damn funky grooves! The title cut features Joe Simon on vocals, and Millie Jackson sings on the cuts "Love Doctor" and "It Hurts So Good". The rest of the set is instrumental, and other cuts include an instrumental take on "Cleopatra Jones", plus "Go Chase Cleo", "Goin To The Chase", "Wrap Up", and "Airport Fight". A great later set from Nina Simone – quite sensitive at times, and with a different feel than some of her 70s work – but one that's still pure Simone all the way through! There's a return-to-classic feel going here – the sort of album that Jimmy Scott and others were making in the same early 90s stretch – when record labels realized that all the clunkier modes vocalists were saddled with in the 80s just weren't working, and that everyone was much better off with warmer strings and jazzier instrumentation pulled from years past. The approach gives the album a more classic jazz vocal style than some of Simone's other work, especially on the ballads – and tunes were arranged by Nina, Richard Evans, Jeremy Lubbock, and John Clayton. Titles include "A Single Woman", "Lonesome Cities", "Papa Can You Hear Me", "Just Say I Love Him", "The More I See You", and "Love's Been Good To Me". CD

Mid 60s magic from Johnny Williams – a cool little score to an obscure heist film that starred Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole! The style here is very much like some of Johnny's other best of the time – often playful at points, but warmer at others – a great blend of fuller strings and more whimsical instrumentation that keeps up all the delightful play of the action on the screen. Recent work from Janice Borla – a Chicago-area singer who's never gotten the national credit she deserves, but who's made some really great music in and around the Windy City over the past few decades! The album's way more than just your standard set of jazz vocals – given Janice hip choice of material, and the fresh execution of the tunes – modern at some points, chance-taking at others, and always with a willingness to push the boundaries of the music past too-familiar modes. The whole thing almost feels like some lost indie gem from the 70s – with lots of surprising twists and turns, and modes that mix breezy scatting with some of the more adventurous styles that you might expect from a singer like Karin Krog or Monica Zetterlund.
