The best material on here, in our opinion, is the Herbie Nichols work – rare non-Blue Note/Bethlehem work that has him supposedly working with a quartet (although we only hear three instruments on the session!), on tunes that include "Nichols & Dimes", "Who's Blues", and "S'Wonderful". A pretty great little set that combines both of the rare early Elmo Hope 10" LPs for Blue Note – plus some additional material! Introducing The Elmo Hope Trio is seminal early work from Hope – and one of the 10" LP releases that was part of Blue Note's "New Faces – New Sounds" series during the early 50s. Hope's working here with Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones – and the trio go to town on numbers that include complicated bop tunes like "Carving The Rock" and "Hot Sauce", plus more melodic tunes like "Freffie" and "Mo Is On". As always, Hope proves himself to be one of the greatest pianists in jazz history – right up there with Monk, Herbie Nichols, and Bud Powell, bristling with excitement that few of his contemporaries (save those three) could match! The Elmo Hope Quintet session has Hope grooving in a very modernist approach to bop, working perfectly with a tight little quintet. The group features Addison Farmer on bass and Al Heath on drums – and the tracks are played with lots of shades of blue – and a nicely restrained modern edge that still has plenty of the soul Waldron was bringing to Prestige blowing sides of the late 50s, mixed with a sense of modernism that shows him advancing into territory of Randy Weston and Herbie Nichols! The record's a pivotal chapter in Waldron's career – definitely full of the sorts of impressions promised in the title – and tunes include the incredible "Champs Elysees", plus "Ciao", "All About Us", and "C'est Formidable". The session has Randy working with Sam Gill on bass and Art Blakey on drums – but the showcase here is really on Weston's work on the keys, which are poised somewhere between the more contemporary mainstream scene of New York at the time, and the angular modernists that this album made Weston a key part of. We've always loved the long sinuous lines he spun on piano, though Hope spent most of his career in obscurity, despite extremely strong critical response to his work – and he died at the age of 45 from pneumonia. A group here that features some key members from the American avant scene, but whose standout member might well be pianist Oscar Jan Hoogland – who contributed two originals to the set, and whose work on the keys seems to really direct the energy of this session that features fresh interpretations of tunes by Herbie Nichols and Thelonious Monk! The setting is quite a different one for saxophonist Keefe Jackson, but he's superb throughout – blowing tenor and sopranino sax at a level that has all the angular tones and inventive spirit that players like Steve Lacy or Charlie Rouse brought to their work in the Monk generation – but with all the freer qualities that live up to Keefe's legacy too! The rest of the group is great too – Joshua Abrams reminding us what a swinging bassist he can be, and Mikel Patrick Avery on drums – really punctuating the tunes nicely, on selections that include "Bemsha Swing", "The Happenings", "Epistrophy", and "Gotta Get Some Sleep – plus Hoogland originals "Wimpel" and "Aanhanguis". A very different album from Archie Shepp – and an introspective record that shows a whole new side of his talents! For the session, Shepp plays piano, not tenor – an instrument he handles with an angular, modern tone – one that seems to echo bits of Herbie Nichols and Thelonious Monk, but with a wider range of sounds too – and a definite sense of spirit that shows Archie's larger growth as a musician in the 70s. The tunes are often familiar numbers, but they're recast in weird ways here – odd phrasing on piano, offbeat rhythms, and some hip backing from Bob Reid on bass and Muhammad Ali on drums. The great Alan Shorter joins the group on flugelhorn for a few numbers – bringing in a freer Paris jazz feel – and titles include "Doodlin", "Invitation", "Coral Rock", "More Than You Know", and Shepp's own "Worried About You".
