A really cool set from the Polish scene at the start of the 80s – one that's definitely got some of the disco elements promised in the title, but sometimes with an offbeat vibe that's pretty unique! About half the tracks have some familiar disco-styled charts, done at an instrumental level – which means that there's fast funk in the rhythms, and jazzy instrumentation at the core – and these cuts are mixed with others that are a bit more lean and electric, and almost hint at some of the UK electro club sounds that were just showing up in the post-punk years – maybe not as dark here as on those recordings, but still quite a nice surprise. Gordon was a lost talent who only cut a handful of records before his untimely death in 1963 – but he was a heck of a trumpeter, with a rich talent that we'd rank up there with Lee Morgan and Kenny Dorham. He plays in a group that includes Art Blakey on drums and Charlie Rouse on tenor – and the overall sound is right up there with the best raw bop on Blue Note or Prestige during the same time. A great little record from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a set that not only shows the great blend of acoustic and electric styles that was happening at the time, but which also really illustrates the inventive approach of the Three Blind Mice label at their best! The vibe here is very different than the usual Japanese fusion album of the time – a bit more relaxed and open-ended, and really free to play around with different rhythms and tonal changes – yet all while still moving forward, and avoiding some of the proggy, jamming modes of the European scene. Gus Mancuso was a 50s instrumentalist who made a brief but strong flash on the modern scene – playing one of the most unlikely jazz instruments ever, a euphonium, which he handled with surprising dexterity and grace, creating a bass-heavy sound that was not unlike some of the work done on baritone during the decade. This 18 track CD features tunes from two of Mancuso's earliest (and only) albums as a leader – Introducing Gus Mancuso and Music From New Faces. The first set features Mancuso blowing hard in a group with Cal Tjader, Richie Kamuca, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi – and the second set features him working through titles from the show New Faces. Loads of great keyboards here from Hiromasa Suzuki – working in a mode that's somewhere between earlier funky jazz, and the tighter Japanese fusion of the late 70s! The style here is never too smooth, yet Suzuki really manages to blend some great elements together – his own keys, lots of funky rhythms, saxes from Jiro Inagaki, and even a touch of vocals from Kyoko Ishu – used in ways that are relatively spare, and more musical than lyrical – which fits in perfectly with the groove! 2 of the best albums ever by one of the greatest female soul groups of all time! The Sweet Inspirations were first known for their backing work behind Aretha Franklin on her classic Atlantic albums – but by the time of these two records, they'd blossomed into a fantastic soul act on their own. Sweets For My Sweet is a great set that sticks in the deep soul mode of their earliest albums – rootsy, with a warm Muscle Shoals-ish glow that's all-soul all the way! Sweet Sweet Soul features Philly work by a young Gamble & Huff team – taking the girls style into a sweeter uptown mode with some really great arrangements by Bobby Martin! Both records are totally great – and back to back, they make for a 21 track CD that's one of the best female soul sets in our racks at the moment. Tower Of Power move down to Memphis for the recording of this great second album – and almost pick up a bit of Stax Records vibe in the process! The Memphis location is a key hint to the groove going on down here – a sound that's steeped in southern elements, even though the group themselves hail from the Bay Area – carried off with a quality that's a wonderful blend of funky rhythms, jazzier horns, and even a bit of fuller touches from the Memphis Strings. Legendary guitarist Steve Cropper helps the group out a bit on the session – and the album's got a sweet southern funky groove that sits nicely with the Bay Area groove of the group. A cool combo from the Japanese club jazz scene – but one who's even more acoustic and classic-sounding than most of their contemporaries! The vibe here is right up there with the best groups we love on the Ricky Tick label – an acoustic quintet that's heavy on trumpet and tenor, laid out over soaring rhythms from piano, bass, and drums – all pure jazz all the way through, with a definite 60s sort of vibe – and a very strong focus on upbeat numbers and groovers! The trumpeter, Yusuke Orita, is especially strong – and blow these brilliantly bold lines on flugelhorn as well – and drummer Takao Ito has this romping quality to his kit that really keeps the whole album moving along strongly. The lasting legacy of Screaming Lord Sutch – and an album that's almost equally well-known for its work by a host of famous guests – including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and others! Page is perhaps the most involved here – as he produced the set with Sutch, co-wrote some tracks, and plays some mighty searing guitar – as does Beck, which makes the album almost worth it alone for all the wonderful solos! But Sutch himself is pretty great too – kind of a mish-mash of late 60s nasty camp references, with the same sinister vibe as Kim Fowley – and an equally freewheeling approach to a tune that makes the album a heck of a lot of fun. The "Lo" in the title here is Immy Owusu's way of hinting at a lo-fi approach on the record – a sound that mixes older West African influences with a more personal, down to earth approach – one that really lets Immy's vocals come across wonderfully – almost more like a soul album, given how upfront they are in the mix – a style that's different than an older singer buried amidst a larger ensemble sound! And yet there's also a decently-sized group on the record too – guitar, keyboards, percussion, and backing vocals alongside Owusu's lead work on guitar and vocals – intimate, yet rich – and with a sound that's such a nice change from records that try for a more slavish vintage sound.
