✨✧ Nitty Gritty Dirt BandNitty Gritty Dirt Band ... LP
Liberty, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant early work from Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a group who grew up in the same Cali sunshine that birthed The Byrds, but who definitely took a very unique path in the way they blended together folk, rock, and country! These guys show their wit on their sleeves a bit more than in later years – almost a Mike Nesmith sense of their style, seen from the outside – with an approach that's kind of a running commentary on what they're trying to do, even at the same time they're doing it so well. Songs are plenty playful, with almost a late 60s Warner Brothers revision of nostalgia at times – and titles include "Buy For Me The Rain", "Song to Jutta", "Candy Man", "Dismal Swamp", "Crazy Words Crazy Tune", and "You're Gonna Get It In The End". ✨✧ Nitty Gritty Dirt BandDirt, Silver, & Gold ... CD
United Artists/BGO (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Used 2 CD ... Out Of Stock
A really great collection of work from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a set that's a collection of mostly older tracks, but which also includes a dozen unissued numbers – all put together with that special flair that always made the group's mid-70s records so different than work of their contemporaries! In other words, this is hardly a lean "greatest hits" collection – and instead, the 3LP collection has bits from the first decade of the group's career coming together in all sorts of different ways – almost with the longform exploratory sense of Will The Circle Be Unbroken, and the playful interplay of their Stars & Stripes set – both expanded packages like this. There's many gems here in an array of styles – and titles include "Bayou Jubilee/Sally Was A Goodun", "Some Of Shelly's Blues", "Ripplin Waters", "You Are My Flower", "Creepin Round Your Back Door", "Sixteen Tracks", "Honky Tonkin", "Soldier's Joy", "Buy For Me The Rain", "Melissa", "Woody Woodpecker", "Cosmic Cowboy (part 1)", "Mother Earth Provides For Me", "Jamaica Lady", "Gavotte No 2", "All I Have To Do Is Dream", "Visiting An Old Friend", and "Win Or Lose". A legendary 3LP set – core work by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, with help from many others who make the record great – including Mother Maybele Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, and Roy Acuff! The whole thing feels a lot more like a traditional bluegrass album than you'd expect – comes off beautifully at a level the group would never hit again! CD

✨✧ Dirt BandDirt Band ... LP
United Artists, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real shift in sound for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – as the group drop the "nitty gritty" for their name, and go for a well-rounded sound that shows off their songwriting in a very different way! There's little of the rootsy elements of Will The Circle Be Unbroken here – as the group warm things up in more of an AOR style, yet still include some acoustic elements too – almost going for a mix of country roots and more polished crossover modes, with a sound that's more in keeping with their LA roots than most of their other 70s records. Yet taken from the perspective of a mainstream record, the songwriting and execution are great – definitely a cut above – and titles include "You Can't Stop Loving Me Now", "Whoa Babe", "Escaping Reality", "For A Little While", "Lights", and "Wild Nights". Liberty, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Weirdly wonderful sounds from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – emerging here as a post-folk group who haven't really gone for sunshine pop, but who know how to use both their own harmonies and the strengths of the studio to their best advantage! There's definitely some catchy vocal bits that recall the work of some of their contemporaries – but these guys also had a strong commitment to roots sounds, right from the start – and contribute some surprisingly strong work on mandolin, harmonica, and other instruments that give them a deeper sound than polished California pop! They've also got a time-spanning quality that fits their name and look – 20s dandies into 60s hippies – and titles include "Happy Fat Annie", "Truly Right", "Search The Sky", and "Shadow Dream Song". Grapefruit (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... $28.99 34.99
A really great package, and one that shows all the cool criss-crossings of styles that we happening up in the hills of LA at the end of the 60s! The artists here are all part of the famous Laurel Canyon scene – a place where late folk, new psych, country rock, and other modes criss-crossed in loose social networks, music studios, and clubs – creating an array of sounds here that really might catch you by surprise! You'll know most of the artists within, but the presentation of them together makes for a very cool compilation – especially as the 3CD set begins with lesser-known early work, then tracks shifts in sounds and styles – moving into later years when the artists and sounds had shifted down into the Hollywood scene. At another level, the whole thing also just makes for a great evolution of Cali rock and pop over a few short years – presented with detailed notes on the artists, songs, and scene – with a set list of 72 tracks that includes work by The Turtles, Rick Nelson, Love, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Gentle Soul, Clear Light, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Stephen Stills, JD Souther, Judee Sill, Crazy Horse, Nilsson, Ned Doheny, Leon Russell, Howdy Moon, Jo Mama, The Leaves, Byrds, MFQ, Steve Noonan, Barry McGuire, Holy Mackerel, Ruthann Friedman, Smokey Roberds, Susan Carter, Loggins & Messina, Gram Parsons, and many others! ✨✧ Father's ChildrenWho's Gonna Save The World ... CD
Numero, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible stuff – a never-issued funky soul record from the 70s – but one that you'll proudly stack next to your rare classics from Ramp, 24-Carat Black, and James Mason! Like work by all three of those acts, this early set by Father's Children is massive righteous – filled with deep soul and strong social messages, while also coming across with a hell of a groove, too – thanks to some wickedly funky backings, and production that keeps the whole thing burning along beautifully! The set is amazing – quite different than the later Mercury Records album by the band – and more like the kind of record you'd expect to hear from Curtom or early 70s Stax – a perfect choice for the folks at Numero to bring to light after all these years – and another reason why their efforts are always worth checking out. As usual for the label, there's a full set of notes and photos that tell the story of the group and this lost treasure – but even if it came out with no artwork at all, the music would still have us raving – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Universal Train", "Everybody's Got A Problem", "Linda", "Dirt & Grime", "Who's Gonna Save The World", and "Kohoutek". ✨✧ Bob DylanTime Out Of Mind ... CD
Columbia, 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
A critical comeback album for Dylan – who never really went away, he was just floundering a bit commercially and critically for a number of years – one that set him up to ride high again for years to come! This is his second album working with producer Daniel Lanois, who helmed the pretty excellent Oh Mercy a few years earlier. Lanois's trademark haze and mood hover over Dylan and his band's wonderful take on timeless folk-blues-roots rock and some of best, most forthright lyricism since Blood On The Tracks. Wrestling with mortality, Dylan delivers a late career classic. Includes "Love Sick", "Dirt Road Blues", "Standing In The Doorway", "Million Miles", "Trying To Get To Heaven", "Til I Fell In Love With You", "Not Dark Yet", "Cold Irons Bound", "Can't Wait", "Make You Feel My Live" and the seemingly improvised, old school Dylan-styled (if more meandering) "Highlands". Omnivore, Late 60s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A really mighty collection, and really the first to give NRBQ their full due – as the set not only brings together an amazing scope of sounds recorded over the space of decades, but also includes some new material never issued elsewhere! The package is kind of a history book that starts at the present, then leaps into the past – as some of the new material is on CD1, then CDs 2 through 5 take a very long journey from the group's mid 60s roots as underground southern rockers, through a variety of changes over the 70s, 80s, and 90s. CD2 might well be the coolest – as it features 23 tracks that are just from the years 1966 through 1970 – really demonstrating that New Rhythm & Blues Quartet element that gave the group their name – a fresh take on older R&B modes, but given a bit of a southern rock spin – almost making the group an equivalent to that music that Nitty Gritty Dirt Band were to roots and bluegrass. The package features an insane amount of music – 106 tracks in all, some of them live, some of them rare, and even early home recordings – and the whole thing comes with a huge booklet of notes as well! CD

Real Gone, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Heavy soul by one of the funkiest groups of all time – New Orleans mighty Meters, a group who forever set a new standard with the classic singles featured in this package! The Meters are an instrumental group at their core – with a moody blend of heady basslines, bubbling organ, and scratchy guitar – made famous by their early singles on the Josie label, then taken to new heights as they moved to Warner/Reprise in the 70s, and came up with some even more complicated grooves! And while the group's albums are all great, it's definitely their singles that put the money where their funk is – creating these cool, compact, mostly-instrumental modes that pack a hell of a lot of punch in just a short space. The collection features 40 of these massive numbers – titles that include "Joog", "Sassy Lady", "No More Okey", "Trick Bag", "Mister Moon", "Find Yourself", "Chug Chug Chug (parts 1 & 2)", "The Flower", "Smiling", "Do The Dirt", "Africa", "People Say", "Running Fast (long version)", "Disco Is The Thing Today", "Hey Pocky A Way", "Stretch Your Rubber Band", "This Is My Last Affair", "Chicken Strut", "Sophisticated Cissy", "Cissy Strut", "Here Comes The Meter Man", "Ease Back", "Ann", "Dry Spell", "Little Old Money Maker", "Hey Last Minute", and "The World Is A Little Bit Under The Weather Doodle Oop". ✨✧ Earl ScruggsI Saw The Light With Some Help From My Friends/Live From Austin City Limits/Strike Anywhere/Bold & New ... CD
BGO (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Four albums that show the continuing evolution of Earl Scruggs in the 70s – with a sound that's very different than his earlier music, and maybe even sharper instrumentation overall! First up is I Saw The Light – a record made after the famous banjo pioneer split with Lester Flatt, and was very popular with a young rock crowd – as evidenced by help he gets here from Linda Ronstadt and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – not to mention Gary and Randy Scruggs, Vassar Clements, and Norman Blake! The mix of famous names and the growing Scruggs Review sound is great – and the record is an unlikely but important entry in the rise of country rock during the early 70s, with a very different quality than some of Earl's earlier work. We might well thank the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – as the vibe is similar at times to their shifting music of the period – mixed with some Mike Nesmith inspiration, as a few of his tunes are included. Titles include "Lonesome & A Long Way From Home", "Silver Wings", "Never Ending Song Of Love", "Rock Sant & Nails", "Some Of Shelly's Blues", "It's A Picture From Life's Other Side", and "Propinquity". Features bonus tracks "The Cure", "I Saw The Light", "Fireball Mail", and "Tramp On The Street". On Live From Austin City Limits, the great Earl Scruggs takes on the growing Austin scene – which turns out to be a perfect fit for his Revue's blend of new country modes and older styles of instrumentation! Earl leads off the set with stunning work on banjo – maybe even sharper than earlier years – and the group lead off with some Dylan material at the start, showcasing some of their rock leanings – but soon bringing on other songs of their own, and making for this beautiful mix of key instrumental moments and lyrical passages. Lead vocals are from Gary Scruggs, and Randy and Steve Scruggs are in the group too – on titles that include "Nashville Skyline Rag", "I Shall Be Released", "Tall Texas Woman", "I Just Can't Seem To Change", "Black Mountain Blues", "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven", and "The Swimming Song". Strike Anywhere is a mighty nice album from the great Earl Scruggs – recorded with his boys' Revue group, and a sound that really helps keep Earl's instrumentation fresh for the 70s! Years back, we never would have thought that mixing the legendary Scruggs banjo sound with keyboards would have worked – but the change here is a great one, as Earl makes the shift that a few of his traditional instrumental contemporaries were doing at the time – such as Vassar Clements or Bashful Brother Oswald – finding a new setting for the instruments that still shine out in the lead at all the best moments. Titles include a great remake of "Mandolin Wind" – plus "Muhammad Ali", "Bring It On Home To Me", "You Really Got A Hold On Me", "I Think Of You", and "Dreaming As One". On Bold & New, the great Chips Moman produced and recorded the record – a set that shows that move that Earl had made into country rock during the decade, delivered in the best possible hands! Vocals are from some of Earl's sons, and the man himself still gets gets in plenty of banjo solos too – as the group mix their own material with a few from Bobby Emmons, who plays organ, electric piano, and clavinet on the set. Titles include "The Cabin", "Our Love Is Home Grown", "That's Alright Mama", "Found Myself A New Love", "Games People Play", "Take The Time To Fall In Love", and "Louisiana Lady". CD

✨✧ Urbie GreenBlues & Other Shades Of Green (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
ABC/Jazz Beat (Spain), Mid 50s. Used ... $8.99
An assortment of work from the team of Urbie Green and Jimmy Raney – two players who rarely worked together in such small group settings! First up is the full ABC album Blues & Other Shades Of Green – one of the most obscure small group sessions by trombonist Green – a heck of a great player who was too often lost amidst larger ensembles! The album's got Urbie playing both slide and valve trombone, in a quintet that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Dave McKenna on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – and the tracks have a tightly arranged approach, but also still allow plenty of room for the individual instrumentalists to express themselves. Titles include "Reminiscent Blues", "One For Dee", "Am I Blue", "Dirty Dan", "Warm Valley", "Paradise", and "It's Too Late Now". Added to that album are 3 more tracks from the Vinnie Burke All Stars album for ABC – truly an all-star session, as the record boasts a lineup that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Al Cohn on tenor, Urbie Green on trombone, Eddie Costa on piano, and Joe Morello on drums! The sound is in keeping with Burke's album for Bethlehem, but fleshed out a bit more with the extra horn players – kind of a loosely swinging take on the chamber jazz sound of the mid 50s, with room for plenty of gentle solos from the key players in the set. The sound excellent – recorded with that crispness and focus that made the best mid 50s ABC jazz sides so great – and the 3 titles include "Lulu's Back In Town", "Blue Jeans", and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You". Last up are 4 more titles from a rare 10" LP – Urbie Green & His Band, featuring Freddie Green on guitar (instead of Raney), Ruby Braff on trumpet, Med Flory on alto, Frank Wess on tenor and flute, and Sir Charles Thompson on piano. The sound is somewhat more traditional, but never too much so – and tracks include "Med's Tune", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Old Time Modern", and "I Got It Bad". CD

Third Man, 1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... $18.99 19.98
A fantastic document of the first-ever Ann Arbor Blues Festival – the start of a great event that would blossom into other styles of music in the 70s, but which stood as a strong blues-based event in its initial year of 1969! In some ways, the three day series of concerts is a roots answer to Woodstock – which took place just a few weeks before – as the festival featured a great scope of blues talents, from the rootsier sort of artists who were recording for labels like Folkways or Arhoolie, to some of the sharper modern talents rising to the top on Chess or Delmark! The package alone is almost worth the price of admission – beautiful photographs of the event, detailed notes, and the first-ever release of this music – which has sat in the vaults for decades, finally to see the light of day. Ace (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic introduction to the world of power pop – that tight, fast, catchy style of music that came about at the same time as punk – and which flourished for a few short years as a more tuneful take on the sound of the underground! Some of the artists here hit big in the years before, others were later smothered in the world of 80s chart hits and music videos – but for a brief, wonderful time, the record racks exploded with great singles and album tracks like these – tunes that almost were a back-to-basics approach after the era of AOR and classic rock, but without some of the sneering attitudes of punk. Most of the artists here are American, and there's a few gems here from the early 70s – key tracks that point the way towards the golden era – all captured beautifully by Ace/Big Beat with their usual detailed notes and history on the music. Titles include "Let Go" by Dirty Looks, "Come On Let's Go" by The Paley Brothers with The Ramones, "Baby It's You" by The Boys, "Nothing Comes Close" by Bill Lloyd, "Better Than Anyone Else" by The Toms, "Nuclear Boy" by 20/20, "Rock & Roll Is Dead" by The Rubinos, "One World" by Utopia, "Andy Please" by Van Duren & The Jody Stephens, "The Trains" by Nashville Ramblers, "Shake Some Action (first version)" by The Flamin Groovies, "What I Like About You" by The Romantics, "I Need That Record" by The Tweeds, "Looking For The Magic" by Dwight Twilley Band, "Kerri" by Robert Johnson, "Radio Heart" by The Secrets, and "Teen Line" by The Shivvers. Sock-hard early soul from the team of Ike & Tina Turner – a great little batch of tracks recorded back in their early years on Sue Records, when the duo was just starting to come on strong, and really came across with a heck of a lot of power! UK/London, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A fun second album from 70s pop rockers 10 CC – who always had a satirical bent – which is pushed into territory that has a bit more bite this time out, without sacrificing the tunefulness one bit! We might have thought catchy and clever was the reason for the CC if we didn't know the dirty truth about the band name, but it's ultimately the uniqueness that makes them a worthy act. Tracks include "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Worst Band In The World", "Hotel", "Old Wild Men", "Clockwork Creep", "Somewhere In Hollywood", "The Sacro-iliac", "Oh-Effendi" and more. ✨✧ VariousInner City Sounds – Gritty Soul & Underground Funk From The Vaults Of Inner City Records ... CD
Luv N' Haight, Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Funky soul from the west coast – and a motherlode of tracks that you've probably never heard! Inner City Records was a small time funk powerhouse – owned and run by organ player George Semper, who cut some mighty fine records on his own! The label's not to be confused with the New York-based jazz label Inner City – because this one was a much more down-n-dirty funky one – and cut some killer work in a deep deep mode, much of which was never issued before – and is making a long-overdue first appearance here! The tracks have some seriously fine jazzy work in them – snapping funk, with a hard and dirty edge, played by performers that include Charles Owens, Rodney Franklin, and James Gadson – all of whom would later go onto become superstars in their own right. A number of tracks have vocals, too – and titles include "Plastic Situation" by Ron & Candy, "In One Peace" by In One Peace, "Funkorgy" by Funkafreek, "Tenderness" by Funkhouse with Candy, "Thank U" by The R&B Classic Funk Band, "It's Insane" by In One Peace, "Spread The News" and "Hands Of Time" by Perfect Circle, "Sticky Boom Boom" by United Soul Association, and "Funktime" by Funkproof. BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Heavy heavy funk from the Louisiana scene of the late 60s and 1970s – and a great collection that really gets past the dominance of the New Orleans sound! The set moves way past the Crescent City to uncover a wealth of great bits recorded in smaller studios located in Shreveport, Lake Charles, and a variety of tiny scenes in the southwest side of Louisiana – and the result is a great batch of tunes with a really gritty, down-n-dirty sound! There's a wealth of great funky styles in the set – including James Brown-inspired jammers, southern soul burners, and some other great modes that show that Louisiana's got a heck of a lot more to offer than just New Orleans funk. Titles include work from the Anla, Murco, Soul International, Goldband, and Tic Toc labels – a total of 22 cuts that include "Soul Time" by Ernest Thomas, "Soul Feeling (parts 1 & 2)" by Eddy G Giles, "Soul Brothers Testify (part 1)" by Chester Randles Soul Senders, "Soul Power" by Abraham & The Casanovas, "Put It On" by Count Rockin Sidney with The Dukes, "Fix It" by Clifton White & His Royal Knights, "Miss Hard To Get" by Dennis Landry, "No Sad Times" by Johnny Truit, "Black Water Gold" by African Music Machine, and "I Got A Groove" by JJ Callier. ✨✧ Daly-Wilson Big BandExciting Daly-Wilson Big Band Featuring Kerrie Biddel ... LP
Festival (Australia), Early 70s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from this Australian big band of the 70s – a group who had all the soulful inspiration of the Clark Boland Band from a few years before, but who also work in a funkier 70s style too! There's a nice mix of electric instrumentation in the rhythms, and although singer Kerrie Biddell is on a few tracks, the instrumental moments are mabye even better. Titles include the fantastic "Dirty Feet", which starts with hard drums, and comes in with off-kilter guitar, in a very Tribe Called Quest-y sort of way! We don't know if this has been sampled by anyone, but man oh man, it should be! The record's got some other funky tracks – like "Limp Dropper" and "Col's Dilemma" – both great too. A double-length monster from Amon Duul – issued after the first incarnation of the group had disbanded, and pulled from recordings that also gave the world the legendary Psychedelic Underground record! The sounds here are often rawer and more powerful than most of the group's other music – sometimes droning with almost a Faust-like sense of noise, other times rocking but with a vibe that's almost tribal at times – thanks in part to drum parts and percussion that bring a very earthy vibe to the record! While some of the Krautrock groups of this generation were soaring to the skies, this one has Amon Duul almost romping in the dirt – on titles that include "Somnium", "Frequency", "Autonomes", "Chaoticolour", "Asynchron", and "Drum Things". Not everyone digs the later Captain and crew, but the early 80s efforts have finally gotten their just props after all these years – and we'll we'll come right out and say that this second to last album before Don Van Vliet hung up the music for painting has always sounded great to us! Ohio PlayersSkin Tight/Fire ... CD
Mercury/BGO (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... $14.99 19.98
2 Ohio Players classics – back to back on one CD! Skin Tight is the band's first album for Mercury – and although one might have the temptation to say that the label cut down the radical funk sound of the trippy Westbound years, the move also taught the band to sharpen up their act, and get out of the repetitive sloppy groove into which they'd been lapsing during the past few years. The record's a lot smoother than earlier work – with a polished funky sound that would soon push the band right up there with Earth Wind & Fire at the top of the soul charts. And although there's familiar funky numbers like "Skin Tight", "Jive Turkey", and "Streakin Cheek To Cheek" – the best moment on the entire album is the wonderful spacey soul number "Heaven Must be Like This", a seven minute mellow groover that's got a sophisticated jazzy soul style, with voices and piano soaring into the heavens, in a way that always still sends chills down our spine! That cut shows the band's tremendous growth – and it's one of their best-ever! Fire is one of the biggest albums ever for Ohio Players – a set that took their earlier funk sound and targeted firmly at the mainstream with a lean, mean groove that a million other groups copied at the time! There's still plenty of the soul of the early years in the group's approach here – and sometimes, the mellower tracks show a wonderful talent for harmonies coming even more fully to the top. But the real appeal of the record has always been the bold, bassy grooves that hit strongly just as ensemble funk was exploding in the mainstream during the early years of disco – making plenty of space for the Players and their contemporaries to grab up new audiences who never would have touched a record like this five years before! There's plenty of grit in the grooves on the best numbers – a style that's maybe not as dirty as on Westbound, but still more than enough to make any real funk fan proud. Titles include "Fire", "Together", "Together/Feelings", "It's All Over", "Runnin' From the Devil", "Smoke", "What The Hell", and "I Want To Be Free". CD

✨✧ PoguesRum Sodomy & The Lash ... LP
Stiff, 1985. Near Mint- ... $49.99
Tremendous work from The Pogues – a group who may well have hit their height with this record! Producer Elvis Costello made it his mission to stay the hell out of the way and just capture the band in all their shambling, boozy glory, and that he does. Underneath his slurred vocals, Shane MacGowan was starting to become one of greatest songwriters ever – and the band's punk-fueled take on Irish acoustic is delivered with superb musicianship throughout – more than enough to make you realize that they're the real deal, and not some hybrid gimmick – breathing new life into a world that had been watered down a bit too much by the aging folkies. Includes "The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn", "The Old Main Drag", "Wild Cats In Kilkenny", "Dirty Old Town", "Jesse James", "Billy's Bones", "The Gentleman Soldier", "A Pair Of Brown Eyes", and "Navigator". ✨✧ Rolling Stones & OthersRolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus ... CD
Abkco, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". ✨✧ B-52sWild Planet ... LP
Warner, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
They may look goofy on the cover, but the young B-52s are incredible here – working with this spare sense of power that almost makes us think that we didn't need most of what happened in rock and roll during the 70s – given the way these guys can distill a mood or moment down to just a few deft instrumental turns and offbeat lyrics! The record's not punk, but it's also not new wave either – at least in the conventional way – and there's a darkness here that goes way past any simple cliches you may have associated with the band – a haunting feel that transcends most of what they were ever capable of in later years. We might even say this one tops their debut – and titles include "Party Out Of Bounds", "Dirty Back Road", "Runnin Around", "Give Me Back My Man", "Private Idaho", "Devil In My Car", "Quiche Lorraine", "Strobe Light" and "53 Miles West Of Venus". ✨✧ Spanky & Our GangSpanky & Our Gang/Like To Get To Know You/Anything You Choose/Live ... CD
Mercury/BGO (UK), Late 1960s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four albums from this wonderful group – all brought together in a single set! First up is the self-titled Spanky & Our Gang – the first, and perhaps the most conventional album by the group, but still pretty darn insane! Spanky & Our Gang are a strange mix of 60s styles – with bits of We Five, bits of Harpers Bizarre, bits of The Association – but a totally strange and totally fun approach to pop that's very much their own. Cuts on the album are a mix of originals and covers – and highlights include the incredible "5 Definitions Of Love" by Bob Dorough, "Distance" by Joe Renzetti, "Commercial" by the band, and the track "It Ain't Necessarily Bird Avenue". Great groovy stuff – and with arrangements by Renzetti, Dorough, and Stuart Scharf. Like To Get To Know You is a tiny little pop masterpiece was produced and arranged by Stuart Scharf and the great Bob Dorough, and is filled with one of the grooviest approaches to pop we've heard in ages. The album includes the sublime hit "Like To Get To Know You", set in a very different LP setting – plus great versions of "Suzanne" and "Everybody's Talkin", and the cuts "Stardust", "The Swingin Gate", and "My Bill". Anything You Choose is the third movement in the fantastic pop symphony that is Spanky & Our Gang! The record's perhaps their oddest to date – and mixes groovy vocal stylings with some fairly advanced production approaches that work perfectly with the incredible songs written by Stuart Scharf and Bob Dorough. The voices swirl about in a mad rush – interweaving lines of melody and poetry, punctuated by strange sounds, spacey airy instrumentation, and wonderful little rhythms. Titles include "Anything You Choose", "1-3-5-8", "Without Rhyme Or Reason", "Give A Damn", and "Nowhere To Go". Live is an unusual album from this groovy group – especially given that most of their famous work was in the studio – and done with really inventive arrangements and production! Yet those qualities still come through here, even in a live setting – as the record's got this stripped-down approach that shows just how much of the group's own inventive vocal interplay and harmonies were part of their fantastically groovy style! Titles include "Wasn't It You", "Dirty Old Man", "The Klan", "Nagasaki", "Amelia Earhart's Last Flight", and "That's What You Get For Lovin Me". CD

Shorter tracks include "The Poodle Lecture", "Dirty Love", "Take Your Clothes Off When You dance", "Lonely Little Girl", and "I'm Not Satisfied".
