Cabaret Voltaire at a perfect point in their career – a time when their overall sound was still pretty raw, and awash in these dark analogue electronics – but also getting a focus it never had before, the kind of rhythmic intensity that would make the group a huge influence on other acts for years to come! The album's a perfect portrait of the Northern UK scene at its best – moodiness that never falls into goth cliches, electronics that distill the experiments of the 70s with post-punk energy, and rhythms that point to the dancefloor but never in a way that's really dance music at all – just pulsatingly hypnotic, in a way that somehow makes the other qualities even more eerie! A totally cool chapter in the early career of Cabaret Voltaire – a stark soundtrack done for a film that's even more obscure than this record! If you dig the creepy, dark early sound of the Cabs, you'll love this one – as the music's got plenty of moody Sheffield electronics, some spare and pulsing with a basic sense of rhythm, some quite noisy at points! We totally love the extended "Taxi Music" – which shows up for most of the first side, and as a dub on the flip – it's a wicked post-punk electronic number that still blows us away time and time again. Other cuts include "DTs", "Cold Turkey", "The Quarry", and "Title Sequence". CD

Lots of layers of sound here – that raw electronic style of early Cabaret Voltaire, mixed with an increasing interest both in found sound samples, including some cool spoken bits – and in elements from a growing global soundscape as well! There's some unusual undercurrents to the music that almost reflect the Brian Eno/David Byrne experiments of the time – with elements that are much more exotic than before. And there's also occasional points that get a bit more tuneful – as if Mallinder or Kirk have finally decided they need a bit of vocals to hook folks into the music – although still at a level that's far from the electro pop of some of their contemporaries. The new sound of the European scene at the end of the 70s – music that carries plenty of inspiration from post-punk modes, but which also carries forth some key elements of prog as well – all at a level that's quite a surprise if you only know more iconic material of the time! The artists here aren't all British or European, but the sound within definitely showcases the way that later electronic experiments of the 70s were thinning down in the work of underground UK and German labels – and also showing the way that the instrumental excesses of the earlier part of the decade were being packed down into more economical packages, but all without losing any sense of freshness or experimentation! A heady brew of rare electronic tracks – and a package that's every bit as wonderful as the first Cold Waves volume! Like that set, this one really digs deep in the post-punk electronic underground – and features a lot of tracks that are appearing here on vinyl – either because they only saw original issue as cassette material, or because they were never issued at all – lost in the shifting sands of the time, in a generation that was dominated by bigger names like Cabaret Voltaire or New Order! The continuing genius of this really wonderful series – just about the only way you'll get to hear this wealth of work from the UK electro scene of the early 80s – most of which was only released on cassette at the time! These tracks follow strongly on the electronic sounds of scenes like Sheffield or Manchester – work that's much more underground than material by groups like New Order or Cabaret Voltaire – with maybe more of the darkness of the latter in their earliest days, and a continuing legacy to the starker, minimal modes – even when the songs have a bit of vocals. A massive batch of mixes from dancefloor maestro John Luongo – a set that's heavy on cuts from the 80s in many styles, and which has some other surprises in the mix as well! One of our favorite projects from the early years of Chris & Cosey – music done for a video release, but still very much like their own studio records of the time – yet with less vocals, and more sonic elements in the mix – so that the whole thing feels like a rare nugget from the farther reaches of the cold wave years! As with Cabaret Voltaire and some of their other contemporaries, music for videos and films always really seemed to open up different sides of the electronic artists of the period – elements that sometimes brought in a richer sense of feeling, but also a greater sense of freedom too – as they were shifting their sounds for the images, not the confines of a vocal tune. That's definitely the case here – served up on tunes that include "Wellspring Of Life", "The Final Calling", "Dancing Ghosts", "Meeting Mr Evans", "Temple Bar", and "Invisible Spectrum". A second entry in this very cool series, but one that's very different than the first – as the "driving" in the title means that most of these tracks have a very cool groove – kind of the darker side of new club music styles of the time, with maybe just a hint of the cold wave generation to come! Given how far back this material goes, the set shows just how much German experiments influenced the rise of UK electronic work in the post-punk generation of early Human League and Cabaret Voltaire – as there's a link here with some of the darker sounds on Rough Trade during that period, and much of the material serves as a great bridge between Krautrock of earlier days and the German new wave of the 80s.
