These guys definitely live up to the "jam" in the name of their band – but not in the same way as 21st Century groups using the jam band name! Instead, the sound here is bass-heavy funk – a mode that's probably a bit inspired by P-Funk, but often faster and more frenetic – kind of a rougher-edged version of some of the Ohio funk acts that really rose to prominence at the end of the 70s. Charles Davis is the maestro on bass – and he never pushes things too far, nor pops the strings too much – and instead just uses his strings to really vamp the whole group from the bottom on up, setting the scene for lots of tasty interplay on horns, guitar, and keyboards – amidst a flurry of vocals by members of the group. Great work from one of the most under-rated tenor players of the 60s! Jimmy Forrest was an excellent player who made only a handful of recordings at the time – but he blows with a deep confidence that should have made him one of the biggest new stars on the scene. This set's one of Jimmy's best, and features his laidback tenor in a quartet with Joe Zawinul on piano, shortly before Zawinul hooked up with Cannonball Adderley. The tracks are short, but the interplay between Forrest and Zawinul is tasty – a bit like the album made by Joe and Coleman Hawkins – and the rest of the group features Tommy Potter on bass and Clarence Johnston on drums. A sublime combination of strings from this unique Chicago trio – an group that features Tomeka Reid on cello, Mazz Swift on violin, and Silvia Bolognesi on bass – all coming together in modes that differ nicely from previous string trios in avant jazz! The players aren't afraid to draw on more melodic elements of their instruments when needed, but almost always offset that quality with some sharper or more experimental elements too – sometimes not in a noisy way, but just to open up their instruments to a range of very fresh possibilities – and hardly at all like any "strings" jazz you might expect! Dee Alexander sings guest vocals on the beautiful track "Not Living In Fear" – and all other selections are instrumental, with titles that include "Terrortoma", "Leaving Livorno", "Transiti", "Requiem For Charlie Haden", "Last Night's Vacation", and "Cantiere Orlando". A sharply focused session from Cecil Taylor – one that's driven by plenty of his free flights on the keys of the piano, but which also receives key support from a larger group! There's a great match here between the dynamism of solo Cecil and some of the collaborations of his earlier years – and in a way, the recording is one of a stretch that almost has Taylor reconciling the solo years of the 70s with the early group recordings of the 60s. A stunner from Nicole Mitchell – a flautist who's been pretty much redefining the jazz flute throughout her early career – here delivering a genre-defiant masterwork with her Black Earth Strings group! The String includes Chicago Sinfonetta Chamber Orchestra vet Renee Baker on violin & viola, diverse Chicago scene players Tomeka Reid on cello and Josh Abrams on bass, and Shirazette Tinnin on drums and percussion – and the group does in wonderful job of moving the boundless spirit of Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble recordings in a stripped down, acoustic, but unencumbered setting. David Matthews arranged the tracks, and he's given them a slick but soulful sound, with lots of spacey fusion elements, and a nice funky soul vibe that's a bit similar to some of Larry Mizell's work – stretched out in this great mix of grooves and deeper jazzier elements – even at a level that's hipper than Matthews' usual material from the time. Idris is at the core on percussion – and the lineup also includes Jeremy Steig on flute, Eric Gale on guitar, Randy Brecker on trumpet, and Wilbur Bascomb on bass – and titles include the seminal "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This", plus "Cambay Bolongo", "Tasty Cakes", "Crab Apple", "Moon Hymn", and "Say What". Maybe one of the coolest collection of soundtrack work we've ever heard, and maybe one of the most obscure as well – given that the tracks here were all done for Belgian films of the 60s and 70s, and include some rare work from composers you might know from bigger name European movies! There's a very jazzy vibe to many of these numbers – and the set echoes some of the great jazz and funk collections on the same label – with a similarly well-chosen batch of cuts that are balanced out beautifully, and presented in the kind of package with notes that let you know that these guys really know what they're doing! The legendary debut of Fear – a landmark in the LA punk scene of the early 80s, and a set that's maybe also showing some of the key shifts that were happening at the time! There's still plenty of hard and fast work going on here, and that undercurrent of wit that marked so much of the best Cali punk – but there's also a sense of evil, darkness, and relentless energy that really gets at the way the heat was really turning up, almost as a competition for intensity that just kept on pushing the whole scene forward in a tremendous way. An early moment of brilliance as a leader for bassist Peter Kowald – and maybe a record of his that matches the early FMP albums of Peter Brotzmann for sheer, raw intensity! There's almost a Machine Gun-like power here – as the group comes on with all the amazing energy that the early European free jazz scene had to offer – that moment when music like this was as much a force in politics and the larger cultural world as it was in jazz – with Kowald at the head of a group that also features Gunter Christmann and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Peter Van De Locht on alto, and Paul Lovens on drums. The trombones alone are worth the price of admission – and Kowald sometimes joins in on tuba and alphorn – on improvisations that include "Pavement Bolognaise", "Guete Luuni", "Platte Talloere", and "Wenn Wir Kehlkopfoperierte Uns Unterhalten".
