The style here is kind of an 80s take on the Moroder groove of the late 70s – lots of keyboards over dancefloor rhythms – but forged with a bit more of an ear for the hooks, too – the kind of crossover styles that might well help Joli reach an even wider audience – especially with that slinky 80s sweater and eye makeup on the cover! An incredible record from the Chicago scene – issued on a tiny little label from deep on the south side – and done with a much richer vibe than you might expect! "Attitude Belief & Determination" is a track that's almost got a righteous, spiritual sort of flavor – but a vibe that's funkier overall – somewhere in that classic James Mason mix of message and groove, with wonderful paired vocals in the lead, and a stepping bassline under Fender Rhodes, which really sends the whole thing home! The track is nice and long, and backed by by "Nonstop To The Top" – a tune with a bit more boogie in the bassline, but still this spacious sort of groove overall. Plenty of folks blended hip hop elements with soul, but Montell may well have been one of the few to really knock it out of the park like this – not just with the oft-played title track, but also over the course of the whole record, which blends some more attitude-heavy cuts with others that are emotionally open as well! Montell handled a lot of the production himself, clearly with an ear for his strengths – and titles include the classic "This Is How We Do It", plus "Don't Keep Me Waiting", "Comin Home", "Payback", "Somethin 4 Da Honeyz", "I Wanna", "Gotta Get My Roll On", "Down On My Knees", and "Daddy's Home". You might know the sound of Jacci McGhee's voice from her previous work backing up Keith Sweat – but this set really gives her a great showcase in the spotlight, and presents the sort of fuller exposure that lets the world hear all her talents at their best! A few cuts have a nicely hard sort of approach – almost a hint at the hip hop influenced world of female soul to come in the 90s – but Jacci also balances things with plenty of sweeter elements too – never letting a sense of attitude get in the way of her craft. There never was a second volume of work from Robert Savage – but maybe that's because he has enough musical adventures on this set to last him a lifetime! Savage is better known as Bobby Arlin, who started out with The Leaves – and his guitar here is far more searing than his work on the LA scene of the late 60s – certainly informed by the rise of British hard rock at the time, but with a boldness that's all its own! The odd cover is hardly a hint at what's inside – as Bobby works with a lean trio of just bass and drums, and none of the trappings that prog-like image might make you expect – qualities that are underscored with some occasional rootsy inflections, and a nice sort of attitude in the vocals. A fantastic full length set from Kaidi Tatham – an artist we love when he comes across in a complete album like this, as it really lets us hear the depth and diversity of his music! Kaidi was one of the leading lights on the London scene at the start of the century – but over the years, his music has evolved way past broken beat and remix work – and this set will show you a deeper, more mature version of the music we first fell in love with on Tatham's many singles – a blend of cosmic jazz, soulful funk, and even a touch of hip hop – with core sounds from Tatham, and guest work from Tiran Kayhatu and Uhmeer – and vocals from Valvin Roane and Amir Townes. The production on the record is great – and pushes everything nicely together in the mix, but without ever sounding too slick – and the group's got some great guitar work from Danny Kootch, whose riffing sounds great alongside the funkier rhythms and keyboards. The sound's a bit like Average White Band at their best – surprisingly great on the mellower numbers, and funky on some of the groovers – especially the great instrumental cut "Squank"! A fantastic introduction to the world of power pop – that tight, fast, catchy style of music that came about at the same time as punk – and which flourished for a few short years as a more tuneful take on the sound of the underground! Beautiful work from pianist Geri Allen – a set that features the musician both with her trio, and with a larger nonet that was put together as part of her winning the 1996 Jazzpar prize – as well as a set that features some great late work from trumpeter Johnny Coles! The first half of the record features the trio – a wonderfully warm group that includes Palle Danielsson on bass and Lenny White on drums – really stretching out on the titles "Feed The Fire" and "A Beautiful Friendship". Then, Johnny Coles joins the trio – and gets a great solo space on a version of "Old Folks" – before the larger group comes in, still with Coles up front in the lead on flugelhorn. Those large group titles include "Smooth Attitudes", "Some Aspects Of Water", and "Skin". CD

There's nothing loser about this great lost record – as the set's got this subtle sense of majesty right from the start – even though the overall presentation is relatively stripped down! A pair of albums from this overlooked Detroit soul group – back to back on a single CD! On Got To Have Your Love, Fantastic Four are a hell of a harmony group – and one who still hold strong through this second chapter of their career – by avoiding any of the cheaper cliches of some of the groups of the disco generation! Instead, the album focuses on their vocals first, and any sort of grooves second – which makes for some wonderful mellower cuts that really follow the spirit of some of the hippest 70s group soul from Chicago or the east coast – followed by a few upbeat tracks that get handling by Tom Moulton at Sigma Sound in Philly! The balance is great – almost more like some of the best group sides from a few years before, especially Blue Magic – and the ballads really take center stage, and blow us away with the group's deeper currents of soul. Titles include "Mixed Up Moods & Attitudes", "There's Fire Down Below", "I Got To Have Your Love", "She'll Be Right For Me", "Cash Money", and "Disco Pool Blues". On BYOF, the Fantastic Four definitely bring their own funk – thanks to tight help from arranger Dennis Coffey, who also produced the set with a heavy groove that's like his own work of the time! The basslines are stronger than before for the FF – but their harmonies are very firmly intact – and, if anything, the blend of funk and great vocals really makes the album a charmer right from the get-go – especially as they aim more for midtempo steppers than too-upbeat disco tunes that might have them losing some of their charm. The overall vibe is maybe more 1974 than 1978 – and titles include "I Just Want To Love Ya Baby", "BYOF", "Cold & Windy Night", "Sexy Lady", "Shout", "Super Lover", and "Realize". CD

Steve Shehan's often a mini musical force unto himself – a percussionist by trade, and one who's worked with many other artists – but who can also open himself up well on a project like this, by layering acoustic and electric elements in an evocative style that might even be thought of as exotica work for a new generation! There's plenty of percussion here that would be right at home on a classic record by Martin Denny or Les Baxter – mixed with some of the 90s advances in keyboard and sampling technology, so that the acoustic and electric elements have a really good balance in the mix, while Shehan goes off searching in all sorts of global directions.
