A record that features a slightly expanded concept on the ideas that Astor Piazzolla had unleashed with his Zero Hour album – all those incredible twists and turns he'd been using to transform Argentine modern music – roots in the tango, but expressions that are up there with some of the most creative 20th Century performances from other parts of the globe! A pretty interesting album – one in which a host of jazz and rock players pay set music to texts written by consciousness-raiser/sci-fi author Ishmael Reed. There's a few goofy moments on the set, but if you've read Reed's work, you'll also know that goofiness and oddity are part of the package – elements that are handled nicely here by musicians like David Murray, Allen Toussaint, Arto Lindsay, Milton Cardona, and Kip Hanrahan, who put the whole thing together. Always the master storyteller, Kip Hanrahan turns his unique musical vision to source material from 1001 Arabian Nights – interweaving stories from the text with jazz-based expression, augmented by spoken and vocal passages. Carmen Lundy sings quite a bit on the record – which is a real treat to our ears, as its great to hear her in such a left-field project – and other artists on the set include Don Pullen, Milton Cardona, Mike Cain, Jack Bruce, JT Lewis, and Henry Threadgill. Macero's a heck of a talent on his own – and this album is one of the few to capture his brilliance. It combines tracks from an early Debut Records ep, plus other sessions from 1957 – and players include Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Lee Konitz, Pat Rebillot, Charles Mingus, and John LaPorta. The mode is 50s modern – not too out, but taking a lot of chances – and titles include "Blues For Amy", "Un Poco Diablo", "Teo", "I'll Remember April", "Explorations", "How Low The Earth", and "Love/Match Point". The group were certainly doing something right – as this album has Joe Cuba's sextet at the top of their game, easily showing why they were one of the best groups on the New York scene of the 60s! The album's a pivotal one in the development of Latin Soul – as it sports the incredible track "El Pito" – one of those Latin jammers that grabbed everyone right away, and which has barely ever been matched since! The album's also got some great use of English language lyrics – crucial to the unique crossover sound that Joe was forging, and a real bridge between Spanish and African American Harlem in the 60s.
