✨✧ Augustus Pablo & Rockers All StarsLightning & Thunder – Previously Unreleased Recordings & Dubplates ... LP
Pablo International (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set that's maybe even better than you might expect from the title – as it not only features never-heard music from the great Augustus Pablo, it also includes killer material from a time when he was burning with a tremendously righteous fire! Backings on most tracks are by the Rockers All Stars, who take the lead on a few tunes – and the lean production has a great sound – dubby elements that are nicely compressed, and maybe even more so by the quality of the tapes – not in a bad way, just as if you're hearing Pablo spin some rare plates of his own, in the backroom of his studio during his free time. Titles include "All Nations", "Sons Of Negus", "A Mother's Love", "Stand Strong", "Omo Valley dub", "Took My Love", "Visions Of Zion", "All Nations Dub", "Gates Of Dub (dubplate mix)", and "Leave The Dreadlocks". The record that really put INXS over the top – and a set that virtually defined the sound of mainstream rock for the second half of the 80s! The tunes still have plenty of guitars, but have also borrowed lots of beats and rhythms from modern dance and club modes – fused together by the mixing of Bob Clearmountain into a razor-sharp groove. Titles include "Guns In The Sky", "Kick", "Mystify", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Calling All Nations", "Tiny Daggers", "Meditate", "Need You Tonight", "New Sensation", "Devil Inside", "Wild Life", and "The Loved One". VariousAfrica Funk Roots – Chapter Two ... LP
Cosmic Disco Machine (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99
Maybe not the complete roots of African funk, but a set that does a great job of bringing together a range of different cuts that show the new sounds and styles that were really hitting the scene as the 70s moved in – work from a wide variety of sources, but which all seems to share a sound and spirit with some of the newly independent African nations! There's a few African funk cuts in the mix, but the more interesting ones are almost those from the Anglo world that show a similar sense of groove, but with a slightly different vibe – coming across here on cuts that include "Waterbed (inst)" by LTD Exchange, "African Queen" by Allez Allez, "Them Changes" by Lionel Hampton, "Sangandongo" by Niagara, "Wassahoumba" by Africa Djole, "Do The Choo Choo" by Jack Ashford, "Africa Gone Funky" by Screaming Jay Hawkins, "Super Kumba" by Manu Dibango, "Tite Rope" by Harold Alexander, "Fat City Strut" by Mandrill, and "Corey Died On The Battlefield" by Wild Magnolias. VariousPadang Moonrise – The Birth Of The Modern Indonesian Recording Industry 1956 to 1967 (with bonus 7 inch) ... LP
Soundway (UK), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 36.99
A mindblowing look at a really stunning musical moment in Indonesia – a postwar period when older sounds from the nation were updated with more western-styled instrumentation – yet often at a level that still retained all of the charm of their roots! If you dig Indonesian gamelan or vocal performances, you'll find plenty to love here – as rhythmic and melodic elements from those worlds are mixed with jazz instrumentation, electric guitar, and plenty of percussion that often seems to draw a bit from Latin inspirations as much as it does from larger local ensembles and their musical legacy. The style is maybe a bit like musical shifts that were taking place in other Southeast Asian nations at the time – but the results are far less slavish to western pop, and still really retain all the cultural care of earlier years – sometimes in ways that are a lot more lean and personal, with extremely beautiful sounds throughout. Maybe one of the best collections the Soundway label has ever given us – with the usual detailed notes, and tracks by artists who include Orkes Kelana Ria, Mus DS, Zaenal Combo, Yanti Bersuadara, Band Nada Kentjana, Orkes Tropicana, Nada Kantjana, and Chris Byantoro. LP, Vinyl record album
(Initial pressing features a bonus 7" single – with tracks by Zaenal Combo and Ivo Nilakreshna.)

✨✧ Chet BakerComplete Studio Sessions With Dick Twardzik ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1955. Used ... $9.99
Excellent work from Chet Baker's 1955 tour of the NATO nations – 13 recordings done with the legendary pianist Richard Twardzik, plus a few other surprising guest stars! Twardzik was one the the freshest talents of the west coast scene of the 50s, but a player who was sadly overlooked, due to his tragic early death. The set captures him at the height of his powers, working with Baker on 9 tracks recorded in the studio in Paris – with a lineup that includes Jimmy Bond on bass and Peter Littman on drums – plus 4 more live recordings from a 1955 concert in Stuttgart, with Lars Gullin joining the group on baritone sax, plus one especially great number that features Catherina Valente scatting along on jazz vocals! The set features 13 tracks in all – with studio titles that include "Rondette", "Mid Forte", "Sad Walk", "Re-Search", "Just Duo", "Piece Caprice", and "The Girl From Greenland" – plus live tracks that include "Cool Blues", "Brash", "Lover Man", and "I'll Remember April". And for discographers, note that some of this material has appeared on the albums Chet In Paris and Chet Baker In Europe. CD

Bande GamboaHorizonte – Revamping Rare Gems From Guinea Bissau & Cabo Verde ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 32.99
A really fantastic idea for a project – and one that comes off even better than we would have guessed – new versions of classic grooves from the nations of Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau, performed by a really well-matched group of singers and musicians, in a mode that's quite different than the usual revival record of this nature! The songs are definitely classics, but the presentation is very contemporary – directed by producer Guts, and Francisco Sousa, with a special ear for avoiding the sorts of cliches that both mar a project like this, and some of the stereotypes that get reinforced by reissues on the market. Instead, there's a fresh criss-crossing of cultures, but one that never waters down the roots at all – maybe a bit like some of the best Parisian productions of the 70s and 80s post-colonial years. Titles include "Dunia Be Tene", "Riba Bass Di Mi", "Citi Ku Liti", "No Guinea", "Mulato Ferrera", "Segunda", and "Di Mas". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DadawahPeace & Love (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), 1974. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 23.99
One of the most righteous albums to come out of the Kingston scene in the early 70s – a set that's driven by the new spirit of the Rastafarian generation, but which also pushes the music much more than some of the commercial efforts of the time! The style of the music here is almost to mainstream reggae what spiritual jazz was to 70s funk – richer, deeper, more thoughtful, driven by message, and carried forth through instrumentation and production – a heady brew cooked up by Lloyd Charmers in the studio, with work from Willie London on guitar, Lloyd Parks on bass, and Charmers himself on organ, piano, and lots of earthy percussion. Of course, the vocals of Ras Michael are the real driving forces of the record – again very different than any mainstream singers, as he stretches out on these long, hypnotic tracks that include "Run Come Rally", "Seventy Two Nations", "Zion Land", and "Know How You Stand". This killer 2CD version features a full bonus CD – 22 more Lloyd Charmers dub tracks from the mid 70s, all of which have never been on CD before! CD

Soundway (UK), 1980s/Early 1990s. New Copy 2CDs ... $17.99 18.99
A long-overdue follow up to the legendary first Ghana Special collection – and one that presents a second chapter of work – not just from the regional scene, but from a time when some of its best artists were also recording in other nations too! The result is a more powerful, soulful style than before – not in a too-commercial "world music" way, but instead blended with elements of soul, funk, and newer club styles to really kick up the groove a bit more – while still keeping all the best elements of the 70s groove intact! There's definitely some drum machine rhythms along the way, but the overall vibe is still nice and warm – and very different than more electro-styled work from the South African scene of the time – and as always with Soundway, the notes and track selection are superb. Titles include "Ebe Ye Yie Ni" by The Godfathers, "Obiara Bewu" by Rex Gyamfi, "Kaakyire Nua" by George Darko, "Adjoa Amisa" by Andy Vans, "Barima Nsu" by Kwasi Afari Minta, "Mumude" by Nan Mayen, "Sii Nana" by Bessa Simons, "New Dance" by Ernest Honny, "Fre Me" by Charles Amoah, "Jigi Jigi" by Dadadi, "Apple" by Gyedu Blay Ambolley, "Alaiye" by Abdul Raheem, "Gye Wani" by Pat Thomas, and "MC Mambo" by Pepper Onion Ginger & Salt. Tim BuckleyGoodbye & Hello ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99
Easily one of our favorite albums by Tim Buckley – and a record that really opens up with some key jazzy touches! Buckley's still got his roots in folk here, and his vocals are yet to hit the extremes of Starsailor or Lorca – but there's also a new sense of inflection to the way he puts over the lyrics, shaded in by use of vibes, kalimba, harmonium, and harpsichord – the latter two of which are played on the session by Don Randi! Tracks are relatively short, but high in concept – and include the protest song "No Man Can Find The War", plus "Hallucinations", "Phantasmagoria In Two", "Carnival Song", "Pleasant Street", "Morning Glory", and "Goodbye & Hello". Roy BuddGet Carter ... LP
Beatball (South Korea), 1971. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... About May 5, 2024
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Brit soundtrack genius Roy Budd – an artist who started with his roots in jazz piano, but who really explodes here in a range of groovy styles! The main title is an incredible blend of Eastern percussion and moody jazz – and other cuts bring in some trippier elements, mixed with funkier bits and warmer moments – all at a level that have Budd even outdoing the best late 60s work by Lalo Schifrin! The keyboards are often at the forefront – either acoustic or electric – and the album's got so many groovy grooves, with such variety, it's got a feel that's much richer than the usual soundtrack set. Titles include "Love Is A Four Letter Word", "Carter Takes A Train", "Looking For Someone", "The Girl In The Car", "Livin Should Be This Way", "Manhunt", "Goodbye Carter", and "Hallucinations". ✨✧ Bud PowellReturn of Bud Powell ... CD
Roulette/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
Interesting sides from Bud Powell – billed on the front as "his first new recordings since 1958", which isn't really the case, since he did cut some work while living in Paris. And even more interesting, the liner notes describe Powell as "back on the US jazz scene, cured of TB and fat as a Burgermeister" – completely hiding the troubles which still plagued him, and which would take him shortly after the time of this session! The material's maybe not prime work by Bud, but it's still pretty great – with more than a few nice moments on the solos – and backing by John Ore on bass, and JC Moses on drums – which keeps things moving at a nice pace. A huge collection of work from funk and soul legend Jimmy Castor – an artist who cut a big number of incredible records for a variety of different labels – almost all of which are in this set! In truth, Jimmy's got a huge legacy in soul that goes back to early years in vocal groups – but this set picks up with his late 60s Latin soul material, then rolls into his famous funk work for RCA and Atlantic Records in the 70s, and continues with great club tracks from the following decade! There's a massive 45 tracks on the 3CD set – a fitting tribute to Castor's never-ending genius – and titles include "Hey Leroy", "It's Just Begun", "Soul Serenade", "Luther The Anthropoid", "Bertha Butt Boogie", "Troglodyte", "It's Just Begun", "Southern Fried Frijoles", "Daniel", "Tribute To Jimi", "LTD", "Psych", "You Better Be Good", "Hallucinations", "Love Train", "One Precious Word", "The Everything Man", "Dracula (part 1)", "The Return Of Leroy (part 1)", "I Just Wanna Stop", "Party People", "Need Your Lovin", "E Man Par Tay", "Space Age (12" mix)", "Super Love", "Bom Bom", "Supersound", "Don't Do That", "King Kong", and lots more! A wonderfully freaky sound library set from the start of the 80s – one that definitely echoes the drugs promised in the title, but with a vibe that's very different than late 60s psychedelia! The record is heavy on 80s keyboards and electronics – and there's some cuts that have a mellow, pillow-like vibe – mixed others that take you on a bad trip, but in the best way possible – echoing some 80s horror keyboard modes, but with a nicely thematic vibe! WEA (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully tripped-out pop from the late 60s – served up by a few famous names and an even better band of lesser-knowns – all of whom recorded for Warner Brothers and related labels at the time! The package does a great job of showing the "pop" side of psychedelia – a sound that's a lot harder than the Sunshine Pop end of the spectrum, but which also shares a similar love of groovy themes, sweet vocals, and cool production techniques! A few of the tunes get a bit way out, but most of the numbers manage to pack a whole trip's punch within a short little 3 or 4 minute song – leaving us to marvel even more at the deft economy in the studio, and the wonderful quality this kind of music had before it succumbed to too many of its own excesses. Titles include "Her Name Is A Melody" by Adrian Pride, "It's Love" by The Misty Wizards, "Break Away" by Next Exit, "Hallucinations" by Baker Knight & The Knightmares, "That's The Way It's Gonna Be" by Lee Mallory, "Wildflowers" by The Holy Mackerel, "Smell Of Incense" by West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, "My Mind Goes High" by MC2, "Straight Aero" by Jeff Thomas, and "The White Pony" by Ellen Margulies. ✨✧ Jimmy CastorButt Of Course/Supersound/E-Man Groovin (with bonus track) ... CD
Atlantic/Robinsongs (UK), 1974/1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of albums from Jimmy Castor – complete with bonus tracks too! First up is Butt Of Course – a funky funky classic from Jimmy Castor – a set that kicked off a tight run of records for Atlantic – and which firmly established his rep as a master of 70s funk! The sound of the set follows nicely from Jimmy's work on RCA – some of the fuzzy "Troglodyte" guitar work of those years, lots of earthy rhythms on the bottom, and Castor's trademark sense of wit – which was firmly in place even during his Latin Soul years! There's a few smoother, sweeter moments too – but these all come off nicely – and as always, Castor's a one-man soul music machine – able to handle plenty of sounds and styles with effortless ease! Titles include "Bertha Butt Boogie", "E Man Boogie", "Hallucinations", "Let's Party Now", "Potential", and "One Precious World". On Supersound, Jimmy Castor bursts forward with a groove that's different than his fuzzier work for RCA Records, but still equally funky throughout! Castor's still quite the multi-instrumentalist on the record – as in addition to singing lead, he plays plenty of soprano sax and timbales – the latter of which have this great skittish energy that really pushes the grooves forward strongly! And although the timbales are quite different than in Jimmy's earlier Latin work from the late 60s, there's a definite Latin-izing element in the way they're used – kind of an "it's not heavy enough – let's add more percussion" approach to the core 70s funk styles of the combo! Tunes are nicely quirky, and have a sense of humor in keeping with the cover – and titles include "Magic In The Music", "Supersound", "Bom Bom", "King Kong", and "A Groove Will Make You Move". E Man Groovin is a great extension of the funky style that Castor first started forging at RCA – touches with plenty of Jimmy's multi-instrumental touches on tenor, alto, and timbales – and given that great monster-inspired approach to lyrics – which ensures that the whole thing stays plenty vivid throughout! Vocals are nice and rough, and the instrumentation is heavy on basslines and clavinet – on titles that include the two part "Dracula", plus "Super Love", "I Love A Mellow Groove", "E Man Groovin", "I Don't Want To Lose You", and "Space Age". 2CD set features bonus tracks – "Space Age (12" disco version)", "King Kong (part 1)", "Supersound (7" version)", "The Christmas Song", "Merry Christmas", and "Bertha Butt Boogie (7" version)". A weird idea for a collection, but a great one too – a set that brings together a batch of train-themed tunes from the 60s, and uses the transportation narrative as a way to unlock ideas of personal freedom and social change! The "train" here isn't just a gimmick – and instead focuses on the way that the mode of transportation helped open up new ideas and new vistas in the postwar years – a way of getting out, and getting past – served up here in a range of soul, blues, and other styles too! The set's got 25 tracks in all, put together with the usual top-shelf Ace Records approach – and titles include "Freedom Riders" by Harold Jackson, "Steam" by Caroline Day, "Number 9 Train" by Tarheel Slim, "Hurry Hurry Choo Choo" by Sharon Tandy, "Memphis Train" by Rufus Thomas, "Won't Be Long" by Dusty Springfield, "The Downbound Train" by Chuck Berry, "Train To Skaville" by The Ethiopians, "Go Go Train" by Jackie Pain, "Freedom Train" by James Carr, "This Train" by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, "Up The Line" by Little Walter, "Death Train Blues" by Daddy Long Legs, "Stop That Train" by Keith & Tex, "Country Line Special" by Cyril Davies, and "Big Train" by Bobby Wayne. ✨✧ Bob DylanWitmark Demos – 1962 to 1964 – The Bootleg Series Vol 9 ... CD
Columbia, Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Somehow, someway, Bob Dylan and Columbia Records can keep returning to the well of unreleased material – and draw jaw droppingly brilliant recordings that are mostly unheard to the general population of non Dylan diehard archaeologists! Here lies the fabled Witmark Demos – early recordings of treasured Dylan classics and rarities alike recorded raw and unencumbered, just Dylan's voice, guitar and occasional harmonica or piano – recorded in 1962 for Leeds Music (a few) and M. Witmark & Sons (most of 'em) in the early-to-mid 60s. Dylan was one of the first wave of 60s folk songwriters brought into the Tin Pan Alley machinations, a pretty amazing moment considering that this gruff, nasal voiced figure was soon to revolutionize popular music and there's no way Witmark could have known it. Hey, maybe this kid will make us a few bucks in the urban folk racket, eh? Wow. Of course many of these songs would be recorded by a who's who of 60s & 70s singers of all stripes, but it's always great to here Dylan's own early, raw sketches. Some of the performances come somewhat close to the way Dylan would cut them for his own landmark albums with just a bit more polish, others are close(ish) to how they sounded in earlier Dylan "bootlegs" (officially and not so official), and most of it has never been officially released commercially. Columbia continues the terrific Official Bootleg Series with a thick booklet of rare photos and notes by Colin Escott. Includes versions of "Hard Times In New York Town", "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", "Ballad Of Hollis Brown, "Long Time Gone", "Farewell", "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", "Girl From North Country", "Only A Hobo", "Guess I'm Doing Fine", "Mr Tamborine Man", "I'll Keep It With Mine" and many more. 47 tracks on 2 CDs. Stax/Atlantic, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Johnnie Taylor's first album for Stax – and a tremendous little set that easily stands as one of his greatest records ever! Sure, we love Johnnie in all his incarnations – but there's a special sort of something here – a rawness and earnestness – that makes the whole thing shine right from the start – a crispy sort of Memphis vibe that has the Stax Records team really hitting their stride. The set's filled with great tunes from the team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter – including "I Got To Love Somebody's Baby", "Toe Hold", "Outside Love", "Little Bluebird", and "I Had A Dream" – and also features great versions of "Watermelon Man", "Ain't That Loving You", and "Where Can A Man Go From Here". ✨✧ Alice Coltrane & Carlos SantanaIlluminations ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really mindblowing collaboration between two of the most spiritual mainstream musicians of the early 70s – legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and spiritual jazz guru Alice Coltrane! The set came at a time when Santana was reaching for much deeper ideas in both his music and his personal life – and Coltrane turned out to be a perfect creative fit, as she'd already been down the path with her own music for years – and helps Carlos here find an incredible setting that really lets his new vision take flight! The album's a very collaborative effort – with Alice on piano, organ, and harp – but Coltrane also brings in some fuller arrangements on half of the tracks – really opening things up, alongside other musicians who include Jack DeJohnette on drums, Dave Holland on bass, Jules Broussard on soprano sax and flute, and Tom Coster on both acoustic and electric piano. The strings are sublime – as heavenly as on Alice's own records – and titles include "Angel Of Air Angel Of Water", "Bliss The Eternal Now", "Angel Of Sunlight", "Illuminations", and "Guru Sri Chinmoy Aphorism". ✨✧ Dollar BrandAnthem For The New Nations ... CD
Denon, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Solo piano from Dollar Brand – and more proof that he's one of the few players who can handle such a format with the same sort of fullness you might normally expect from a trio! Brand's work has a wonderfully rhythmic quality here, and a righteous element too – one that fits the "new nations" spirit of the title – the rising sense of power and identity in independent Africa, paid tribute to beautifully in a host of original compositions! There's less of the light, loping sounds that you might find on other Brand albums of the 70s – and at points, the music gets quite complex, emotionally – which makes the record a great one to turn to if you want to get past some of Brand's more familiar modes. Titles include "Thaba Nchu", "The Trial", "Liberation Dance", "Biral", "Anthem For New Nations", and "The Wedding Suite". CD

Carlton, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A unique sort of book – one with both an a-side and a b-side, each of which takes a different approach to The Beatles' classic white album! The first half of the book is an in-depth look at the musical masterpiece – presented with lots of vintage images, reflections on the record by group members, and track-by-track examinations of the double-length album! The second half follows in a similar image-rich approach, but then looks at the context in which the album was released – the cultural scene, political mood, musical vibe, and other aspects of the year 1968 – traced in month by month chapters. And the writing is great – this isn't one of those books that uses pictures to fluff up the text – and the hardcover edition is 10" square, 190 pages, with images throughout. Book

Columbia, 1956. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great rare 50s material by Blakey – an early 80s issue of outtakes from the Hard Bop LP, plus some sides recorded shortly afterwards, with a slight line-up change! The group is one of the earliest incarnations of the Jazz Messengers, featuring Donald Byrd and Hank Mobley in the front line, and Doug Watkins and Horace Silver playing rhythm alongside Blakey, blowing hard on four burning sides worthy of the title of the LP they were left off of – "Late Show","Ill Wind", "Weird-O" and an alternate take of "Carol's Interlude". The remainder of the album trades in Kenny Drew, Ira Sullivan and Wilbur Ware for "Lil' T" and "The New Message", and there's a "Gershwin Medley" featuring an altogether different lineup of the Messengers. One of the wildest albums that British reedman Lol Coxhill ever played on – and that's really saying a lot, as he's played on a heck of a lot of wild albums! The set's done with a Japanese group, and it's got an insane mix of improvised jazz and post-punk energy – Lol's work on soprano sax mixing with guitar, drums, and percussion – often used in different combinations from track to track – sometimes very free, sometimes with more of a song structure, and vocals from singer Eiichi Tsutaki in Japanese! Those latter cuts almost feel like some sort of Rough Trade label experiment that Lol would have been a part of – and titles include "Bye Bye", "Trio", and other songs in Japanese. A relatively recent set from pianist McCoy Tyner, but one that shows the same great ear for choosing a horn that we love in his 70s classics! As with those records, a key force on the recording here is altoist Gary Bartz – a player who's always great on his own, but seems to take on a special energy in the company of Tyner – really stretching out with a soulful, spiritual vibe that matches McCoys musical vision wonderfully! Trumpeter Terence Blanchard is also in the group – a bit more let loose than usual – and the combo's completed by Christian McBride on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. Titles include "Angelina", "Illuminations", "New Orleans Stomp", "The Chase", "West Philly Tone Poem", and "Soulstice". CD

A key album from a fantastic point in the career of trumpeter Chet Baker – his later years, a time when most of the world was ignoring Baker's talents, but Chet was still in a hugely creative mode, and turning out some of his freshest sounds in decades! There's a wonderful quality to the whole record – and vibist David Friedman is a key part of the sound, as he really matches the air inclinations of Chet, as the pair are backed by Buster Williams on bass and Joe Chambers on drums and percussion – a fantastic duo who only make things sound even better. 4 of the album's 6 tracks are Friedman originals – including "For Now", "Shadows", "Syzygies", and "Lament For Thelonious". Arthur BlytheLight Blue – Arthur Blythe Plays Thelonious Monk ... LP
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Contemporary/OJC, 1958. Used ... $4.99
Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at another level, the record's still way darn bolder than just about anything coming out of LA at the time – proof that amidst all the cool jazz ruminations of the 50s, there was a second wave of modernism about to explode! The group here features Don Cherry on trumpet, Walter Norris on piano, Don Payne on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and while the core harmelodic rhythmic approach isn't always in place, it's more than made up for by some surprisingly free energy. Vanguard, 1975. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Guitarist Larry Coryell really changes it up from before – shedding both some of his electric modes and his vocal inclinations – and also working with a completely different group, who give the record a very unusual sound! Coryell plays a lot of acoustic guitar here, in addition to some electric – and the group also features additional guitar from Ralph Towner – whose open, airy approach really shapes the sound in a different way – but, alongside Larry, also has more force than on his own ECM recordings. The group also features Glen Moore on acoustic bass – but the real highlight may well be Collin Wolcott, who plays tablas and congas – bringing in earthy, global elements that really make some of the best moments shine. Elektra, 1967. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
Really important early live work from The Doors – a performance at the legendary Matrix club in San Francisco – and one of the first concert recordings ever done of the group! The set wasn't originally part of their legacy with Elektra Records, but has become rehoused as a key part of their catalog at the label – a really burning performance that effortlessly mixes blues inspirations, psych inclinations, and that very special quality that the band was forging right from the start! As with other unearthed Matrix recordings – which seem to show up more and more as the years go on – the whole thing is a key window into not just a moment in the group, but a moment in the scene as well – even though, reportedly, the concerts were very under-attended at the time. This triple-length package brings together the entire five nights of recording, with lots of unissued material – including surprising versions of jazz tunes "Bag's Groove" and "All Blues" – plus never-heard versions of "Summer's Almost Gone", "When The Music's Over", "My Eyes Have Seen You", "Alabama Song", "Break On Through", and "Moonlight Drive". Gil EvansGreat Jazz Standards (180 gram pressing) ... LP
World Pacific/Blue Note, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
A fantastic lost set from modernist genius Gil Evans – one that expands on some of the larger group territory he was exploring with Miles Davis at Columbia Records – but with an even hipper range of soloists overall! The lineup on the record is an all-star one – mostly top shelf players, not studio musicians – and the set has Evans making room in the arrangements for key solo performances by giants who include Johnny Coles on trumpet, Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Budd Johnson on tenor, Ray Crawford on guitar, and both Curtis Fuller and Jimmy Cleveland on trombones – all players who each bring some key moments of magic to the larger arrangements on the album. Evans himself plays piano, and drums are by Elvin Jones and Dennis Charles – which should give you an idea of the modernist inclinations in the music. And although the title says "standards", the tunes here are definitely on the hipper side of the jazz spectrum of the 50s, expanded with beautiful modern arrangements by Gil – on versions of "Joy Spring", "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men", "Django", "Straight No Chaser", and "Chant Of The Weed". Tommy FlanaganConfirmation ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1982. Used ... $6.99
Lovely lyrical sounds from Tommy Flanagan – a pianist who can be as deft as a bopper, but also bring in some richer currents of soul as well! Case in point is this great album from the late 70s – a time when Flanagan wasn't as much in the recording spotlight as the decade before, but a period when he'd actually matured a lot more as a player – able to step effortlessly between both his inclinations, especially when working with a group this great – a trio that features George Mraz on bass and Elvin Jones on drums! Tommy's got a touch on the keys that's subtle at times, but extremely powerful – a knowledge of notes and colors that's never overstated, but always right on the money. Titles include a great reading of the Tom McIntosh tune "Cup Bearers", plus "Maybe September", "Confirmation", "50 21", and "It Never Entered My Mind". CD

Tamla, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
Marvin's definitely in the groove on this set – cooking on all burners with a host of late 60s Motown hits – bad-stepping his way towards some of the more mature moments to come in the 70s! The album's probably best remembered for the cut "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" – easily one of Marvin's biggest moments of the 60s, and a track whose popularity led to the album's title change from In The Groove to later incarnations as Heard It Through The Grapevine! Other cuts are equally great, and show Gaye really stretching out with mature, masculine confidence – pushing the envelope nicely on cuts that include "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever", "There Goes My Baby", "Change What You Can", "You're What's Happening", "Tear It Down", "You", and "Some Kind Of Wonderful". Way more than a snapshot – as the double-length set acts more like a full portrait of the European free jazz scene at the time – with special contributions from a wide array of avant German musicians! The feel here is very FMP – especially in the mode of that label's live recordings, which often feature unique combinations of musicians, really driving each other on. As part of that promise, the album features work from the Berliner Improvisations Quartett, with Hermann Keller on piano, Andread Altenfelder on trumpet, and Manfred Schulze on reeds; the trio of reedman Friedhelm Scholfeld; the Ulrich Gumpert Workshop Band, with Gumpert on piano, Ernst Ludwid Petrowsky on reeds, Heinz Becker on trumpet, and Johannes Bauer on trombone; the duo of Gumpert on piano and Gunter Sommer on drums; the Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky Quartet with Sommer on drums and Heinz Becker on trumpet; the Studio IV group, with Petrowsky on reeds, Hubert Katzenbeier on trombone, Eberhard Weise on piano,a nd Joachim Graswurm on trumpet; a trio with Gumpert on piano, Sommer on drums, and Manfred Hering on alto and tenor; and the Hans Rempel Orchester, with Rempel on piano, plus Becker, Graswurm, Petrowsky, Bauer, and Forsthoff. An unissued session from pianist David Janeway, done at a time when he was really hitting his stride – moving across the keys of the piano with this intuitive sense of feeling that makes for a very special record! The quality is a bit hard to describe, but if you've heard other Janeway sessions from the 90s, you'll know what we mean – a lyrical swing that's never sleepy or sloppy, and which always seems to sparkle with these fresh combinations of notes, yet never in a way that's trying too hard, or seems forced! The rhythm work of Harvie S on bass and Steve Johns on drums is a perfect complement to Janeway's piano – and on one track, they're joined by Pete Yellin on alto, for a great reading of "Invitation". The instrumentation and presentation is great – as impeccable as you'd expect, but not nearly as polished – with maybe some of the more personal warmth that a group like America were displaying at the time – although with some slightly rootsier touches in the instrumentation at times. The last time around, their lead singer was Denise Vallin – and here, the lovely Leslie Page steps up to the microphone with a vocal style that's a great fit for the warm, Cali-styled grooves that the group does so well – a mixture of soulful inclinations with jazzier flourishes – all given a production style that's nicely down to earth, like some lost west coast jazz vocal album from back in the day! Really fantastic work from the continuing version of Sun Ra's Arkestra led by Marshall Allen – and an album of rich sophistication that definitely shows the mature version of the group really finding their own sense of voice and spirit! There's a laidback take to the music that partly recalls some of the modes that the Arkestra had in their earlier days, when they were exploring some exotica currents mixed with more avant jazz inclinations – although the expression of the sound here is more focused and majestic, with slight string touches blending in with instrumentation of a more jazz-based mode – handled by Marshall Allen on alto and kora, Knoel Scott on tenor and baritone, Michael Ray and Cecil Brooks on trumpets, Dave Davis on trombone, Farid Barron on piano, Dave Hotep on guitar, and Tara Middleton on some mighty nice flute and violin. There's a richness to the sound that comes from all the other players involved in the proceedings – and titles include "Day Of The Living Sky", "Firefly", "Wish Upon A Star", "Chopin", "Marshall's Groove", and "Somebody Else's Idea". Really beautiful work from pianist Horace Tapscott – working here in a mode that crosses some of the freer inclinations of his solo sessions for the Nimbus label with some of the deeper spiritual currents of his large group recordings of the time! The group's just a trio – with Sonship on percussion and the mighty Roberto Miranda on bass – the last of whom does a really fantastic job of setting the tone, with this round, rich sound that really holds things together – even when Horace is getting a bit free on his solos! All tracks are nice and long, and thanks to Miranda, there's a nice sort of modal energy on the set – a balance between structure and freedom that's really wonderful, and which gets at the core of Tapscott's best achievements on record. Dwight TribleMothership ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2019. Very Good+ ... $13.99
One of the most amazing jazz vocalists of our generation returns here with an incredible group – a majestic combo to match all the spiritual inclinations in his music – with work from Kamasi Washington on tenor, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and both Carlos Nino and Derf Reklaw on percussion! Dwight Trible on his own is already more than enough to get us to run out and buy a record – but here, the combination of his unique voice with these musicians makes for an album that's an instant masterpiece – and one that even has lots of new colors and styles compared to some of Dwight's previous work! Songs include numbers by older west coast spiritual jazz heavyweights – like Horace Tapscott, Linda Hill, Nate Morgan, James Leary, and Jesse Sharps – mixed with some of Trible's own songs, and versions of work by Carmen Lundy, Oscar Brown Jr, and Donny Hathaway. From top to bottom, start to stop, the album's a treasure – with tracks that include "It's All About Love", "Thank You Master", "Song For My Mother", "Brother Where Are You", "Some Other Time", "These Things You Are To Me", "Desert Fairy Princess", and "Mothership". Vinegar JoeFiner Things – The Island Recordings 1972/1973 (Vinegar Joe/Rock & Roll Gypsies/Six Star General/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Island/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $27.99 38.99
A trio of overlooked albums from UK group Vinegar Joe – packaged here with bonus tracks as well! First up is the group's debut, Vinegar Joe – a record with a UK blend of roots rock and deeper blues currents – but served up in that 70s style that takes all the best elements way past their familiar incarnations! The group sports two singers – a young Robert Palmer and female vocalist Elkie Brooks – and although Palmer would soon emerge as a more pop-oriented artist, he's got plenty of soulful chops here – but maybe still only second to Elkie, who soars out with the sort of inspiration that must have touched Janis Joplin as well. Titles include "Circles", "Leg Up", "See The World", "Never Met A Dog", "Live A Little Get Somewhere", and "Avinu Malkenu". Next up is Rock & Roll Gypsies – a record with a really wonderful sound – tight, but never too polished – maybe that UK love of American soul inspirations that folks know more famously in work by artists like Joe Cocker or Traffic, but which is served up here with a really unique feel by the overlooked Vinegar Joe! The group sports a fantastic lead female vocalist in Elkie Brooks, who'd later go on to make some great records on her own – and a young Robert Palmer rounds out the lyrics with a quality that's so different than his later work, and maybe even more soulful overall. Titles include "Falling", "It's Gettin To The Point", "Buddy Can You Spare Me A Line", "Angel", "No One Ever Do", "Forgive Us", and "Charley's Horse". Last up is Six Star General – the third album from Vinegar Joe, and a set that we're not sure got the same global circulation as the earlier albums – which is a real shame, as the group here are maybe even more focused on their sound than before! By this point, Robert Palmer has left the group, but the wonderful Elkie Brooks is still in the lead on guitar – and the group have impeccable instrumentation from Jim Mullen on guitar, Keef Harley on drums, and Mike Deacon on keyboards. Titles include "Proud To Be", "Black Smoke Rising From The Calumet", "Let Me Down Easy", "Fine Thing", "Lady Of The Rain", and "Dream My Own Dreams". Also features bonus tracks "Speed Queen Of Ventura", "Long Way Round", and single versions of "Black Smoke Rising From The Calument" and "Rock & Roll Gypsies". CD

Ace/BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
The reach of Miles Davis is plenty wide – as right from the start, the trumpeter was associating himself with some of the hippest young talent on the scene! Yet the apex of those associations may have come in the late 60s and early 70s, when the newly-electric Miles was experimenting in all sorts of new rhythms and instrumental combinations – and inviting a whole host of soon-to-be-legends to help him with his projects! This set is a great overview of some of those key contemporaries – and the way that they took new directions of their own, when away from Miles – some very much in the spirit of the Bitches Brew generation, others opening up in whole new frontiers of soul and spirit. The set features some really well-chosen tracks – a key who's who to this generation – and titles include "Sweet Pea" by Wayne Shorter, "In A Silent Way" by Joe Zawinul, "Common Mama" by Keith Jarrett, "Song Of The Wind (alt)" by Chick Corea, "In Search Of Truth" by Lonnie Liston Smith, "Arjen's Bag" by John McLaughlin, "Politician Man" by Betty Davis, "Uhuru Sasa" by Gary Bartz, "You'll Know When You Get There" by Herbie Hancock, and "Directions (16 December 1970 – first set)" by Miles Davis himself. DIW (Japan), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
The cover looks a bit punk rock, but the music here is all jazz – pulled from the great catalog of DIW Records – the groundbreaking imprint of Japan's Disk Union record stores! Back at the end of the 80s, the company really started to put its money where its heart was – and launched a series of recordings of artists who weren't getting their fair shake in the studio, or the sort of freedoms that DIW was allowing them! The label's approach often allowed for unique combinations, or different expressions than some of the more familiar work of some of their artists – which made for a stretch when we were joyously awaiting each new DIW release, and the sorts of surprises they would bring. This package is a well-selected batch of classics, with a strong focus on the label's commitment to the New York avant scene – all newly remastered – with titles that include "Tahah" by John Zorn Masada, "Burning Like Love" by James Blood Ulmer, "Kush" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Autumn Leaves" by David S Ware, "Anaba Aozo" by Ayibobo featuring Jean-Paul Bourelly, "Deep River" by David Murray, "Spiritual" by Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra, and "In Time" by Music Revelation Ensemble. Soul Junction (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 18.99
A great volume in this really fantastic collection – a series that really reminds us that there's still so much great work to discover in the world of underground soul! As with previous volumes, this set focuses on the sweet soul style of the late 60s and early 70s – that moment when groups around the US were really maturing to a new level of vocal harmony – sometimes using a bit of funk in the mix, sometimes going for these sublime ballad modes that brought a new level of emotion and heartbreak to the music! You're sure to know bigger names like The Moments or Delfonics, but this is work that was cut at the same time, in the same mode, but which never fully got its due – pulled together by the longtime soul historians at Soul Junction – and even featuring a few never-issued tracks. Titles include "Read It & Weep" by Bobby Banks, "Give It A Chance To Grow" by The Toppiks, "Running Wild" by The Scott Three, "Lucky Guy I Am" by Delegates Of Soul, "Imitation Of Life" by Music Machine, "This Is Love" by The Holidays, "Plain As The Nose (alt unissued version)" by The Four Thoughts, "Love Song About You" by Robert Montgomery, "I'm Going To Treat You Good" by The Donations, "You Got To Steal It" by The Flairs, "Win All Your Love" by The Toppiks, "Nothin Left 2 Do" by The Coalitions, and "Stop Look & Listen" by The Jonesetts. A killer trio with a really wonderful sound – one that's equal parts jazz and funk, but which also maybe has a strong inspiration from 70s electric modes – not in a way that's too spacey or trippy, but which really uses the right sense of space between the notes to open up the groove! The lineup features drums, keyboards, and guitar – all beautifully combined without too much hype or fanfare, but definitely in a way that's less familiar than other combinations of the instruments – and which has plenty of sweet electric funk appeal throughout! This CD-only release combines the group's Mosaic EP and their Murmurations album – for a total of nine tracks that include "Cannonball", "Pocket 5", "Breakthrough", "Miles Away", "Dragonfly", "Mariposa", "Ivory Mountain", and "Transcoso". London/Craft, Mid 1960s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The wonderful voice of Marianne Faithfull in all its 60s glory – set up here with sublime arrangements from Mike Leander, in a style that's unlike just about anything else we can think of! Marianne's got a bit of a trill – as you might hear in female folk singers of the decade – but the overall presentation is something completely different altogether – kind of a dark recasting of the usual pop modes you might hear from Leander, with all these blue undertones and weird intonations that kind of point the way towards moodier female singers to come at the end of the 60s – but still with enough ties to the mainstream to make Faithfull's music even more powerful! The balance is hard to describe in words, but hits you right away from the very first note – and titles include "Counting", "Ne Me Quitte Pas", "In The Night Time", "Tomorrow's Calling", "With You In Mind", "I'm The Sky", "Lucky Girl", and "I Have A Love". Dunhill/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A four-pack of albums from this seminal group – all brought together in a single set! Where Were You is a seminal set from the Sunset Strip scene of the 60s – and just the kind of record that shows why the changes taking place in Cali were so important to the growth of so much other music at the time! A few years before, and The Grass Roots would have been a pop folk combo re-tuning traditional tracks for the coffeehouse scene – but here they're taking off with some post-folk modes that are partly sunshine pop, partly the headier currents that were the darker side of the west coast – all put together with superb production by PF Sloan and Steve Barri – who also penned some of the best tunes on the record. Titles include the great "Where Were You When I Needed You" – plus "Only When You're Lonely", "Look Out Girl", "Ain't That Loving You Baby", "I've Got No More To Say", "I Am A Rock", "Tell Me", and "Mr Jones". Let's Live For Today is maybe the most famous record ever given to the world by California quartet The Grass Roots – famous for its title tune, and for the way that it effortlessly blends together folk inclinations and psych inspirations! The record's definitely one of those that showed the world that there was something new in the air at the time – put together with perfect production in the studio from Steve Barri and PF Sloan – who are in territory that's somewhere between the best from Brian Wilson and Abbey Road Studios – but a bit more understated than both! Titles include the classic "Let's Live For Today" – plus "Things I Should Have Said", "Wake Up Wake Up", "No Exit", "This Precious Time", "House Of Stone", "Is It Any Wonder", and "Tip Of My Tongue". Feelings is a great departure for The Grass Roots – a set that has the group taking a stronger role overall in the instrumentation and songwriting on the record – at a level that makes the whole thing a fabulous extension of all the genius they'd given the world on previous sets! There's still that cool blend of post-folk and psychedelic elements taking place here – gently swirled together with acoustic and electric guitars setting the tunes up just right – all with a late 60s Cali vibe that's as great today as when it was recorded. Titles include "The Sins Of A Family Fall On The Daughter", "Melody For You", "You Might As Well Go My Way", "Dinner For Eight", "Good Things Come To An End", "You & Love Are The Same", and "Hey Friend". A heady concept album from this legendary group – one that features a suite of tracks that all share concerns for the environment! Given the amount of electricity at play, the album's maybe not as "green" of a set as it might be – but Nektar definitely seem to create some energy of their own in a heady blend of keyboards, guitars, bass, and drums! The familiar instruments are used in really powerful, soaring styles – and the production has some cool touches around the edges that change things up nicely, and add in just the right sort of spacey currents. Lead vocals follow the message in the music – and titles include "Cybernetic Consumption", "Recycle Countdown", "Flight To Reality", "Unendless Imaginations", "Sao Paulo Sunrise", "It's All Over", and "Costa Del Sol". 5CD set features bonus tracks "Flight To Reality (single)" and "It's All Over (single) – plus the 2024 Geoff Emerick mix, and bonus live material recorded in Toronto and Long Island in 1976! Mad music from the Nihilist Spasm Band – a group who really live up to their name from the very first moments of the record! The set begins with "Destroy The Nations" – a track that's meaner, nastier, and more mindbending than anything you'll ever hear from any of the wildest other acts of the late 60s – and the rest of the record really follows suit – with energy that's more late 70s noise than any of the hippie dippy politics of the time – much more of a precursor to Pere Ubu, and maybe the entire No Wave scene in New York! Guitar, drums, bass, theremin, and a surprising amount of kazoo collide with unbridled improvisatory energy – and titles include "Destroy The Nations", "Oh Brian Dibb", "Dog Face Man", "When In London Sleep At The York Hotel", and "Destroy The Nations Again". Nimbus, 1981. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The album features a great 21 minute reading of Tapscott's perennial favorite "The Dark Tree" – done with a great throbbing bassline – plus the tracks "Raisha's New Hip Dance" and "Sketches Of Drunken Mary". A totally cool little record – and one that was so rare, it was initially only pressed up to give to the singers and performers who worked on its grooves! The music here is all from a talent show in Brooklyn, circa 1968 – headed by the Youth In Action charity, and filled with very strong performances by soulful, youthful talents right from the streets! The whole thing's got a very raw feel – like the funkiest of the funky 45s from the time – and the recording is also live, with an audience that's getting pretty darn wild as the set moves on. Tracks mix great group soul performances with gritty funk and soul instrumentation – and tracks include "I Want To Be Sweeter To You" by The United Souls, "Love Makes A Woman" by Carla & The Carlettes, "I Wish It Would Rain" by Channels 4, "Come & Get These Memories" by Sharon Seabrook & The Starlettes, "Cowboys To Girls" by The Destinations, and "Thrillers Band" by The Thrillers Band. The collection features material that was pressed up at the tiny Boddie pressing plant in Cleveland – a wonderful range of local artists from the late 60s through the mid 80s – all served up with the usual Numero flair! The set's a rich discovery of sounds we'd never have heard otherwise – and although it's slanted heavily towards rare funk and soul, there's also some compelling indie rock sides too – especially some homegrown, dark-toned sounds from the 80s – clearly influenced by the styles in the UK underground. The set features 17 tracks in all – including "Don't Stop Smiling" by Jus Us, "Just A Dream" by Imperial Wonders, "Love Is On The Way" by Bill Spoon, "Let Me Go" by The Harmonics, "I'm Gonna Treat You Good" by The Donations, "Good For The Gander" by Hot Chocolate, "Woman You're Gonna Pay For This" by Wicked Lester, "The Voyage Of The Nautilus" by Russell Potter, and "Snakepit" by Berlin West. "Blues" might be a surprising word for the title of an album by Paul Bley – especially given his modern inclinations – but the term definitely fits here, as this set of solo piano performances by Bley has a wonderfully moody, mellow quality – and a surprising amount of soul at times too! Paul's always had his warmth – although it usually comes across in more lyrical passages – but here, there's a richer focus on the left side of the piano, which opens up the bottom, and makes for some wonderful core sounds as Bley expresses himself more nimbly on the right. The titles are all originals, with maybe a bit more structure than improvisations – and tunes include "Baby Narrows", "Late Night Blue", "Downtown", "Underground", "Up Hill", "Rear Projection", and "Into The Night". The surprisingly rich lost legacy of Freedom – a group who were initially born out of a breakup with Procol Harum, but then went through some huge growth on their own over the space of a few short years! As you'll hear in this set of complete albums from the group (plus bonus tracks too!), the band began as more of a Hammond-based combo, then shifted towards a wickedly-sharp harder rocking group with lots more guitar in the lead – equally tight in both incarnations, and with a quality level that should have made them much bigger than they were! The group recorded for a few different labels, and some of their records never crossed the Atlantic back in the day – yet taken as a whole, the work here is excellent throughout – with plenty of inventive touches that really have them marking their own territory as the years move on. The package begins with their excellent soundtrack for the film Nerosubianco, which includes lots of rare bonus tracks too – followed by the BYG/Actuel classic Freedom At Last, and three more great albums Freedom, Through The Years, and Freedom Is More Than A Word – as well as more bonus tracks too. A really early piece of music from the great Karl Jenkins – the British instrumentalist that most folks know for his work in Soft Machine in the mid 70s – heard here a few years before, on a beautiful composition that mixes his jazz inclinations with some of his more serious ambitions! The album features one long work, divided up into movements – played by a lineup of some of the hippest British jazz players of the moment – including Ian Carr on flugelhorn, Ray Warleigh on alto, Alan Skidmore on tenor, Brian Smith on soprano, Chris Spedding on guitar, and Frank Ricotti on percussion! There's a solid, soaring vibe to "Penumbra II" – as the piece builds slowly, with some great piano from Jenkins himself – then really takes off, with added help from Dave MacRae on electric piano, Ray Babbington on bass, and John Marshall on drums – all at a level that mixes modal energy with some solos that step out nicely, but never too free or outside! Mpale had already played in many settings before this record, and on the set he almost seems inspired by some of the London combinations of jazz and groove that started coming into play at the start of the 90s – using midtempo rhythms that are inspired by house, but much more laidback – on tunes that open up with plenty of room for his own trumpet solos, plus a bit of reed and keyboard solos too. Gary Peacock's bass has always had a wonderful home on the ECM label – one of the few places its deepest, most powerful tones can really come to light – as they do strongly on this well-balanced trio recording with Marc Copland on piano and Joey Baron on drums! All three players are masters of understatement – able to make such powerful movements with just a bit of energy – and the brooding quality of Peacock gets offset through some illuminations on Copland's piano in this really great way – while Baron shifts in these careful, thoughtful modes that greatly accommodate both musicians. ECM (Germany), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dewey Redman's struggle is our success – as the album's one of the strongest from the ECM catalog at the time, and a simple, clean statement of the Redman talent at its best! The setting is a quartet one – in a group that includes Charles Eubanks on piano, Mark Helias on bass, and Ed Blackwell in drums – all coming together beautifully with one aim in mind: to give Dewey just the right platform for blowing on each number. "Love Is" is a gently soulful tune that has a warm lyrical quality, offset by the harder, blusier approach of "Turn Over Baby", or the freer explorations of "Combinations" – all of which are Redman originals. And if that's not enough, the group swing back into bop territory for a closing rendition of Charlie Parker's "Dewey Square", taken by Redman at a personal pace with few traces of Parker. CD

A seminal bit of 60s modern from MPS – a tremendous session that features equally strong contributions from the three players named in the title – Attila Zoller on guitar, Lee Konitz on alto sax, and Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone! All players are at the height of their modern powers here – never too over-indulgent, but working with lots of sharp angles that seem to take off from the Konitz generation, and revel in the new European freedoms unlocked by Zoller and Mangelsdorff. A set that really expands the legend of Factory Records – the famous label who gave the world New Order, Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, and other important post-punk bands – as the set focuses on the equally legendary Hacienda nightclub, which the label opened in Manchester in 1982! Manchester was already a city with a hell of a music scene – but at the Hacienda, all sorts of sounds and styles mixed together – in a spirit that was similar to some of the energy on the New York scene at the time, particularly at a club like Danceteria – where the quest for the new took clubbers way past standard genre designations! ✨✧ VariousLocal Customs – Downriver Revival (CD & DVD) ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections ever put out by The Numero Group – and that's saying a lot, given the hipness of the label! Downriver Revival chronicles the story of a unique studio in Michigan – Double U Sound, a custom recording spot that captured a wonderful range of soul, funk, gospel, and other sounds from the local community – beautifully presented here in a full CD, plus a bonus DVD that features the near-complete 200 song archive of the studio! The DVD's really unique – so we'll talk about it first: Done with an interactive menu that lets you literally comb through the boxes of tapes in the Double U vault – selecting each reel recorded by the studio, and sampling the rich array of wonderful sounds from this untapped Michigan scene – a huge amount of music, far more than you'd ever find on a CD compilation. The DVD also features a documentary on the studio and Downriver Revial project – and that alone would be worth the price of admission – but the CD then features 24 key numbers pulled from the vaults – tracks that were either issued on rare 45s, or never issued at all – and which represent a wonderful array of soulful sounds that definitely lives up to the Numero standard! Titles include "There's A Light" by Shirley Ann Lee, "Take Care Of Us" by The Revelations, "Untitled Jam" by Bobby Cook & The Explosions, "Foot Stumping (alt)" by Organics, "While You Were Gone" by Combinations, "Heaven" by Deliverance Echoes, "Untitled" by Burgess Band, "Round N Round" by Junior Mays Group, and "Walk With Me" by Calvin Cooke. ✨✧ VariousSoul Station 11154 – Mixed By Muro ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
DJ Muro takes on a host of killer soul, funk, and jazz tracks from the deep deep EMI catalog – all in a mighty mix that's even more compelling than some of his other sets of this nature! The collection's filled with rare gems in a variety of genres – and Muro's definitely got the right sort of ear to mix things up perfectly – always with just the right sort of care to avoid crashing grooves together, unlocking some great musical combinations in the process! There's a few moments which are more Muro-mixed than others, but the core vibe of the tunes mostly shines through overall – on a massive set list that features 26 cuts that include "I'm In Love" by Nancy Wilson, "E-Carnival" by Tania Maria, "You're Welcome Stop On By" by Lou Donaldson, "A Little Bit Of Love" by Gentle Persuasion, "Think About Me" by Marlena Shaw, "Love The Way You Make Me Feel" by John Lee & Jerry Brown, "Family (live)" by Hubert Laws, "Why Can't We Be Friends" by Jacob Miller, "To See A Smile" by Ronnie Foster, "It's The Real Thing" by Monica Higgins, "Rhythm Rhapsody" by Ramona Brooks, and "Gift Wrap My Love" by The Reflections. ✨✧ Chet BakerPeace ... CD
Enja/Rhino, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Tim Berne's SnakeoilIncidentals ... CD
ECM, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Saxophonist Tim Berne has found a great recent home in his Snakeoil group – combo that allows him to try out many different tones and colors, really pushing his music forward with a freshness that it maybe hadn't had in previous years! Berne's sharp-edged at the head of the group on alto – alongside Oscar Noriega on clarinet and bass clarinet, Ryan Ferreira on guitar, Matt Mitchell on piano and electronics, and Ches Smith on drums, vibes, percussion, and timpani – an instrumental mix that's often used in these very unusual, very compelling ways – sometimes blocking out spaces in sound with unusual combinations of elements, often with more surprising brightness than the darker or more obtuse moments you might expect. Titles include "Hora Feliz", "Stingray Shuffle", "Incidentals Contact", "Prelude One/Sequel Too", and "Sideshow". CD

✨✧ Ornette ColemanSomething Else!!!! ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Invisible", "The Blessing", "Alpha", and "The Sphinx". CD

✨✧ DamnedBest Of The Damned ... LP
Chiswick/Ace (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The Damned were one of the first great punk acts on the UK scene, and maybe one who quickly showed the world they had plenty of different modes to offer – not just the short, sharp, shock of a two minute 45 – but slightly more varied modes that really reflected the different inclinations of the members of the group! This set brings together a surprising range of music in a short amount of time – even one side project from Captain Sensible too – and together, the cuts serve as a great illustration of what made The Damned so unique – and maybe gave the group a bit more crossover power and stamina than some of their contemporaries. Titles include "New Rose", "Love Song", "I Just Can't Be Happy Today", "Plan 9 Channel 7", "The History Of The World Part 1", "Wait For The Blackout", "Rabid Over You", "Smash It Up", "Hit Or Miss", "There Ain't No Sanity Claus", "Neat Neat Neat", and "Jet Boy Jet Girl". ✨✧ Marianne FaithfullFaithfull Forever ... LP
London, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Marvin GayeIn The Groove (aka I Heard It Through The Grapevine) (green cover) ... LP
Tamla, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Sergius Golowin with the Cosmic JokersLord Krishna Von Goloka ... CD
Lion, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Freaked out, slow burning, LSD inspired freeform psychedelia from the early 70s – credited to Czech-born guru Sergius Golowin and the Cosmic Jokers! Conceptually, Lord Krishna Von Goloka concerns itself with the spiritual machinations of the universe and all kinds of mystical mumbo jumbo of which we can't claim to speak for the merits, mostly due to a language barrier, but the leisurely cosmic soundspaces speak to us well enough! Acoustic guitars, spacey keys, organ and echoey sounds bring a lighter feel to much of it, as opposed to the heavier proggy touches of contemporary efforts of the time. 3 long pieces, the uber epic length "Der Reigen" and "Di Hock-Zeit" which each run near 20 minutes, and the shorter middle part "Die Weibe Alm". ✨✧ Miki HowardCome Share My Love ... LP
Atlantic, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A lasting classic from Miki Howard – maybe the singers best-remembered moment from the 80s – and a record that set a whole new standard for female soul at the time! Miki's got this all-adult approach right from the start – a move in the territory that was first forged by earlier sophisticated soul singers like Phyllis Hyman and Marlena Shaw – in which Howard can act with the poise of a jazz vocalist while still being a soul artist – stepping out in smooth arrangements that give the whole record a nicely mature vibe. Lemel Humes produced – and titles include "My Friend", "Come Share My Love", "Love Will Find A Way", "Imaginations", "Come Back To Me Lover", and "Do You Want My Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Monday MichiruAlternate Routes ... CD
Artist Share, 2008. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great remixes from Monday Michiru's Routes album – and a set that really continues her strong tradition of collaboration with some of the hippest talents of the underground! As with some of our favorite Michiru remixes from years back, the tracks here are more re-imaginations or re-recordings of her music than anything else – hardly just new beats or keyboards added into the mix, and often versions that have the tunes taken in rich new directions – always with the soulful, positive energy we love in Monday's originals. Collaborators include Part Time Heroes, Jephte Guillame, and Carlos Mena – and titles include "The Right Time (Yellowtail rmx)", "Hung Up (PTH sprung up mix)", "You Don't Know (feat Part Time Heroes)", "Philosophy Road (PTH hideout mix)", "The Right Time (Jephte's tet kale mix)", and "Don't (Casamena backyard mix)". ✨✧ Nicole Mitchell & Andrew HawkinsAt Earth School ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully meditative music from spiritual flautist Nicole Mitchell – a set that's almost a stripped-down version of work done with her larger ensembles in the past – as she works here on duo improvisations with pianist Alexander Hawkins! The spare sound of the record is wonderful, as it allows Mitchell to craft maybe some of her most personal, poetic sounds on the flute – and even allows her some brief vocalizations too – while Hawkins moves between moments on the piano that are free, but in a sprightly way – to others that have a more subtle sense of tone and timing. Titles include "Interlocking Imaginations", "Jalopy Ride", "Elliptical Rotations", "Flicker Bounce Glide", "The Stars Are Listening", and "There Is A Balm In Gilead". CD

The mighty DKV trio is expanded here by the presence of Joe Morris on guitar – a fourth fantastic sonic element, alongside the bass of Kent Kessler, drums of Hamid Drake, and tenor of Ken Vandermark! The quartet begins the record with a great deal of energy, then things split off into various formations – a few trio and duo tracks which shift the mood and stylistic improvisations in a great way, and really show the open imaginations of all players as they creatively reassemble. Titles include the long "Telling Suite", plus "Standing Here", "Bit Tenet", "Infix", "Breathe Easily", and "Hollow Curve". CD

It's a good thing the Rockers All-Stars met King Tubby in a firehouse – as the record's so burning, somebody almost had to put out the fire! The album's a classic from that moment when Agustus Pablo was crafting some of his best lines on melodica, and helping out with the arrangements too – with instrumentation from a group that includes Earl Chinna Smith on guitar, Robbie Shakespeare on bass, and the great Deadly Headly on horns – all given some cool combinations of keys from Pablo, who also handles organ, piano, and the cool "strings assemble" too! Mixed by Prince Jammy and King Tubby – with titles that include "Zion Is A Home", "Jah Say Dub", "Dub In Matthews Lane Arena", and "Simeon Tradition". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dave Pike SetLive At The Philharmonie ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A legendary MPS session from vibist Dave Pike – a set that mixes his funkier styles with some freer modal jazz leanings – all in a way that really makes the album stand out from the rest! The group is the groundbreaking Dave Pike Set lineup – the combo that featured Dave's vibes alongside guitar from Volker Kriegel, bass from JA Rettenbacher, and drums from Peter Baumeister – a truly funky little groove who keep things tight and interesting throughout! And although recorded live, the album's got all the spacious feel and compelling sounds of any of Pike's studio albums for MPS – and is perhaps even more amazing, given that these sounds are all spontaneous emanations from the group. Titles include "Riff For Rent", "Mambo Jack The Scoffer", "Hey Duke", "The Secret Mystery Of Hensch", and "Nobody's Afraid Of Howard Monster". LP, Vinyl record album
