✨✧ Roger KellawayCello Quartet ... CD
A&M, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A large, ambitious early 70s experiment in "chamber jazz" from pianist/composer Roger Kellaway – a really haunting set with the sweep you'd be much more in store for on a classical or chamber orchestra record, but with an earthbound core, chords and tonal shifts of a piano jazz album! Kellaway leads on piano, with a group that includes Emil Richards on percussion, Ed Lustgarten on cello and string arrangements, and the A&M Records staff symphony orchestra! Tracks include "Saturnia", "Sunrise", "Esque", "Invasion Of The Forest", "Morning Song" and more. CD

✨✧ Dom MinasiI Have The Feeling I've Been Here Before ... LP
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet guitar lines from Dom Minasi – a player who knows how to hit just the right sort of fluid vibe for this session! The album's got Dom soloing strongly over arrangements from Roger Kellaway, Byron Olson, and Bernard Ighner – all of whom bring some strong charts to the session, and give Minasi plenty of strong tones and colors to work with. The style shifts a bit throughout the record, but things are quite unified overall, with lots of compelling original tunes – and titles include "Moroccan Copper", "RK Bossa", "You've Been Away Too Long", "Sometime Boogie", "Bitzy", "Free", and "Theme From Prisoner Of Second Avenue". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner.)

✨✧ Oliver NelsonMore Blues & The Abstract Truth ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1963. Used ... $2.99
Oliver Nelson's follow-up to his classic Blues & The Abstract Truth session for Impulse – and like that one, a tremendous little album – filled with deep tones and wonderful colors in sound! The group here's a bit larger than before – an ensemble that includes Phil Woods on alto, Ben Webster on tenor, Thad Jones on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Roger Kellaway on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Grady Tate on drums. The album includes some superb original compositions by Nelson – just the kind of overlooked jazz numbers that make the set great – and as with most of his arrangements from the time, there's a perfect balance between group force and intimate solo space! Titles include "The Critic's Choice", "Blues & The Abstract Truth", "One For Bob", and 2 versions of Dave Brubeck's "Theme From Mr. Broadway". Also included are two bonus tracks- "One For Phil" and "Night Lights". CD

A rare larger group session that Gerry recorded in the early 70s for A&M – done in a style that's smoothly soaring, and a wonderful 70s extrapolation of his talents on baritone sax. Players include Bud Shank, Harry Edison, Roger Kellaway, Howard Roberts, and Emil Richards – and titles include "One To Ten In Ohio", "Maytag", "Golden Notebooks", "Country Beaver", "Grand Tour", and "Over The Hill & Out To The Woods". ✨✧ Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer QuintetClark Terry - Bobby Brookmeyer Quintet ... LP
Mainstream, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Genius work from one of the most solid groups in 60s jazz – the quintet co-led by trumpeter Clark Terry and trombonist Bob Brookmeyer – a legendary ensemble that drew on the best talents of both players, but grew into something greater! Brookmeyer's playing valve trombone throughout on the tunes – played in a fluid, trumpety way that matches perfectly with Terry's own phrasing – and which almost creates a sense of counterpoint on the head arrangements, yet which never falls into styles that are too academic or modern. There's a fluid easy grace here that's really surprising – with none of Terry's gutbuckety tricks or Brookmeyer's too experimental moments – and overall, the group have a solid, soulful quality that almost reminds us of the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet, or of some of Farmer's other key recordings of the 60s. Rhythm is by the trio of Roger Kellaway on piano, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums – and the album features 10 numbers in all, including "Tete A Tete", "Pretty Girl", "Blue China", "Blindman, Blindman", "Sometime Ago", "Hymn", "Step right Up", "Weep" and "Straight No Chaser". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 70s pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear, bumped corners, and a promo sticker in back.)

✨✧ Ben WebsterSee You At The Fair (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Impulse, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little album from Ben Webster – perhaps not his most sophisticated, jazz-wise, but done up in a cool cover that has him standing in front of the steel globe at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. The music on the disc has a similar optimistic approach – as Ben solos lightly over rhythms by either Hank Jones or Roger Kellaway on piano (and a bit of harpsichord), plus bass and drums backing by Richard Davis and Osie Johnson. The album's got a great rolling soul jazz number called "See You At The Fair", and a very odd crashing harpsichord number called "Lullaby Of Jazzland" – plus the tunes "Fall Of Love", "While We're Dancing", and "Our Love Is Here To Stay". CD
(1993 MCA/GRP pressing with 3 non-LP bonus tracks.)

✨✧ MelanieBorn To Be ... CD
Buddah/Wounded Bird, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Melanie's a folkie at heart, but one who's very open to new ideas too – as you'll hear in this surprisingly offbeat set from the late 60s! The record mixes Melanie's raspy, almost eerie vocal approach with some compelling charts from Roger Kellaway – who respects the folk impulses at the core, but also brings in some unusual inflections in the other instrumentation – that post-folk approach that was showing up in records by Leonard Cohen and others of the singer/songwriter generation. The difference is subtle, but very striking – and very different than the way the set would have been recorded a few years previously. Titles include "Christopher Robin", co-written with AA Milne – plus "In The Hour", "I'm Back In Town", "Bobo's Party", "Close To It All", "Merry Christmas", and "I Really Loved Harold". CD

✨✧ Zoot SimsZoot Sims Live At The Half Note (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Jazzbank (Japan), 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not to be confused with the more famous United Artists album at the Half Note, recorded in the late 50s, this one is from 1965 – and features Sims with a quintet that includes Al Cohn, Roger Kellaway, Bill Crow, and Mel Lewis. The Japanese issuers of this material have given it the sub-heading "Amazing rare recording by the melodious and drunken tenor sax maestro" – but we'll skip the last part of that description, and focus on the first – because the team of Sims and Cohn was still burning strongly at this point, and break out nicely on longer tracks in this live setting. Titles include "It's Noteworthy", "Doodle Oodle", "Red Door", "Saratoga Hutch", and "LJ's Dream". CD

✨✧ Clark TerryHappy Horns Of Clark Terry ... LP
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really great little album – one that really gets at the bright, joyous feel that Clark Terry brings to his music! Despite the "happy" in the title – which might make you think this one would be a bit silly – the album's a pretty great record! Terry plays both trumpet and flugelhorn (hence the "horns" in the title) – and he's working with a spare, tight, and surprisingly creative group that includes drummer Walter Perkins, bassist Milt Hinton, pianist Roger Kellaway, and the sax team of Phil Woods and Ben Webster. Tunes are light and playful, but never sloppy – instead quite inventive, and done in a way that's halfway between Terry's own late 50s work as a leader (as on Argo), and some of his work on sessions like Ed Thigpen's magnificent Out Of The Storm. Titles include "Jazz Conversations", "High Towers", "In A Mist", "Rockin In Rhythm", "Return To Swahili", and "Impulsive". LP, Vinyl record album

Mainstream, 1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A nice fifteen track double LP set that has flugelhorn and trumpet player Clark Terry and his quintet – co-lead by trombonist Bobby Brookmeyer tackling pieces by Herbie Hancock, Thelonius Monk, Count Basie and others, as well as several originals. Bill Crow, Dave Bailey, and Roger Kellaway round out the group – and tracks include "Dancing On The Grave", "The Simple Waltz", "Ode To A Flugelhorn", "Hawg Jawz", "A Gal In Calico", "Green Stamps", "Straight No Chaser", "The King", and "Blindman, Blindman". ✨✧ Clark Terry/Bob BrookmeyerPower Of Positive Swinging ... CD
Mainstream, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from one of Clark Terry's best periods – and the kind of stripped-down swinging 60s set that really lets him show his most soulful side! The group features Terry on both trumpet and flugelhorn – working in co-leadership with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone – supported by the rhythm combo of Roger Kellaway on piano, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums – a trio that swings in a smooth, sophisticated way that really matches the double brass sound in the frontline – lifting things to that special groove that Terry and Brookmeyer crafted together! Bailey's drums are nice and tight – arguably a good reason the best Terry records from this time are so good – and titles include a lot of playful originals like "Dancing On The Grave", "Ode To A Flugelhorn", "Green Stamps", "Hawg Jawz", and "Simple Waltz".
