Lovely work from one of the sweetest voices in the Carter Family – sister Anita Carter – nice stuff recorded for RCA in the 60s & 70s! Anita was fairly overlooked as a solo singer throughout her career, at least as far as breakout success goes (she likely didn't lack for the admiration and respect of her peers) – and the material on this excellent compilation by Omni is actually far more engaging than we expected, even as longtime fans of the Carters. The sound is probably a bit too quiet and folksy to have gotten over in the honky tonk scene of the time, and likewise a bit too modern, lean and crisp for fans of the uber old school Carter Family of earlier decades, but it holds up beautifully all of these years later. A discovery we're happy to have finally caught up with! Blue Magic getting a bit bolder than before – adding in some heavier funk that takes them past the mellow moments of their earliest years – yet still serving up some great harmonies in the process! The change is a subtle one – heard on some of the album's more hard-grooving tracks, which also bring in some full arrangements that echo the trippy feel of the cover – yet which still always respect that slight heartbreaking undercurrent of the group's great vocals, thanks to arrangements from Bobby Eli! A surprisingly straightforward Christmas album from Chilly Gonzales – one that features spare piano on most of the tracks, usually handled with this really moody vibe that really gets the complicated spirit of the holiday right! It's as if Chilly knows that the season can be as sad for some folks as it is happy for others – so he created a special record that opens up more melancholy elements in familiar classics, while mixing things with a few original numbers that really fit the mood. There are a few vocal moments – thanks to Jarvis Cocker and Feist – and titles include "The Bannister Bough", "Jingle Bells", "All I Want For Christmas Is You", "Snow Is Falling In Manhattan", "Come All Ye Faithful", "We Three Kings", "In The Bleak Midwinter", and "Last Christmas". A 70s set that brings together some nice sides from Wes and his brothers. Side one is taken from the Montgomery Brothers set, the first session to feature the group with Wes on the west coast – caught in the studio at a time when Buddy and Monk had left The Mastersounds, and recorded here with a sound that's quite similar to that group – but with a bit of a harder edge, thanks to the guitar. Side two continues in the same vein, capturing the group on a live set in Vancouver, grooving in a similar style that's a bit like some of Wes' early small group albums from the same time. The final two sides are pulled from the Groove Yard LP, another lively set that has a lot more swing than usual, and which grooves nicely on just about every cut. A definite funky Christmas from keyboardist Adam Shulman – a player who handles Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and organ here – plus additional keyboards as well! Yet despite the many keys, this isn't some Herbie Hancock-styled set – as the groove is lean, and the record has a small combo vibe that's as if an older organ combo has evolved into the 70s – picking up lots of the best currents of funk and soul that have changed things over the years, and woven them into a really wonderful Holiday mix! Most tunes are remakes, but come up with a very unique vibe – thanks to work from a quartet that also includes alto and EWI from Jesse Levit – on titles that include "Christmas Time Is Here", "We Three Kings", "Let It Snow", "We Wish You A Funky Christmas", "Good King Wence", and "Christmas Is Coming". A record that has Dave Grusin elevating a bit more into the jazz/soul mainstream – as the set has the keyboardist working with a few more crossover modes than before, but all in a way that seems to demonstrate his many years in various kinds of music! The album was a key entry in the new sound of fusion during the mid 80s – maybe a bit sharper than later smooth jazz, but with efforts from some leading lights of that generation to come – including David Sanborn and Marcus Miller. Phoebe Snow sings a bit on the record – which might provide her with one of her more exciting settings in years – and titles include "Power Wave", "Thankful N Thoughtful", "Night Lines", "Tick Tock", "Bossa Baroque", and "Secret Place".
