Paul Desmond Quartet Live

LP (Item 70201) A&M, 1975 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
One of our favorite Paul Desmond records of all time – a set of understated brilliance that really lets him display his genius! Desmond at this time had been lost in some other sets that respected his talents, but didn't offer the greatest proof that he'd been growing as an artist – and this live album presents his magical alto work in a totally unfettered setting, with just guitar, bass, and drums backing him up. The spare sound is simply sublime – as Desmond's alto floats in air, magically picking notes out of nowhere, and illuminating the empty space with notes that seem to fall from the heavens. Titles include "Manha De Carnaval", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Wave", "Wendy", and "Take Five" – all done in nice long takes!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a faint stain at the bottom corner, with a patch of stuck-on paper inside the gatefold.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wes Montgomery

Day In The Life
CTI/A&M, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
Mindblowing! This is when Wes Montgomery really starts to get interesting to us – when he's working with a top-line arranger like Don Sebesky, crafting some incredibly compelling chords over lightly jazzy arrangements and soaring strings, in a whole new mode of expression that would go onto ... A&M, 1979. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
Great live versions of "Feels So Good", "Chase The Clouds Away", "Land Of Make Believe", "Hill Where The Lord Hides", and more! LP, Vinyl record album

Gato Barbieri

Caliente
A&M, 1976. Near Mint-
One of Gato Barbieri's later recordings – but don't hold that against it! The set's a smoother effort than most of Gato's earlier work, but it's also still pretty darn soulful – done in a way that allows plenty of space for his raspy reed work on tenor to flow over the top of larger ... Wes Montgomery

Road Song
A&M/CTI, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Beautifully lofty work from the great Wes Montgomery – a set that was recorded quite late in his too-short career, and really points the way towards some of the sophisticated sounds that might have followed, had Wes not left this planet all too soon! Don Sebesky is at the head of the charts ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chuck Mangione

Chase The Clouds Away
A&M, 1975. Sealed
A great one from that period when Chuck Mangione was mixing his sublime flugelhorn sound with some well-crafted larger ideas – served up with a core combo that features Chuck on Fender Rhodes as well as his horn, plus Chip Jackson on bass, Joe LaBarbera on drums, and Gerry Niewood on soprano, ... Neil Larsen

Jungle Fever
Horizon/A&M, 1978. Near Mint-
A standout set from keyboardist Neil Larsen – a record that crossed over big back in the 70s, and which still sounds pretty darn great in the 21st Century! Larsen's keys here are kind of a more mainstream take on territory Bob James was exploring a few years before – arguably hipper at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

Monster
Verve, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
Totally cool Jimmy Smith album that has him playing a lot of funky groovy versions of TV and Film themes, like "Goldfinger", "Theme From The Munsters", "Theme From Man With the Golden Arm", and "Theme From Bewitched". Oliver Nelson leads a large band and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk

Unique Thelonious Monk
Riverside, 1956. Very Good+
The session's billed as "very personal treatments of great standards" – and it's a great twist on familiar material, all given the Thelonius touch! There's less of Monk's creative composition and angular group arrangements going on here – and instead, the album's almost a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rahsaan Roland Kirk

Return Of The 5000 Lb Man
Warner, 1975. Very Good+
A beautiful late chapter in the jazz journey of Rahsaan Roland Kirk – and an album of subtle genius that's really opened up to us over the years! The setting here isn't as "hit you over the head" as on some of Kirk's Atlantic Records – because at one level, the tunes are ... LP, Vinyl record album

Neal Hefti & His Orchestra

Swingin On Coral Reef (10 inch LP)
Coral, 1953. Very Good+
Hard-swinging work arranged and conducted by a young Neal Hefti – already showing a great flair here for a bouncy tune and the kind of "punch" that later made him a huge hit with Count Basie! Tracks include "Sure Thing", "Uncle Jim", "It's a Happy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

Prayer Meetin'
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good-
A classic Blue Note meeting of two of the label's top talents in the early 60s – Hammond hero Jimmy Smith, and the up-and-rising Stanley Turrentine on tenor! Turrentine's simply great at this point – playing with a raspy edge on the bottom of his tone, sounding dark and mysterious ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Byrd In Hand
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good+
One of the best of Donald Byrd's early Blue Note albums – a sparkling set of hardbop tunes with a really souful edge! The album's one of a few that feature Byrd working with baritonist Pepper Adams – a frequent partner on his best recording dates of the late 50s, of which this set is ... LP, Vinyl record album
