❔
Smokey's Family Robinson finds Smokey exploring rather than simply setting out to continue riding the waves made by Quiet Storm. There's bits of dancefloor funk, pared down keyboard soul, spacey jams and a sweet ballad or two – all with Smokey's soul strirring vocals in peak form. Titles include "When You Came", "Get Out Of Town", "So In Love", "Open", "Castles Made Of Sand" and more  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout notch, ringwear, edge wear, bent corners, and some stains in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Pocket Full Of Miracles
Tamla, 1969. Very Good+
A great one by The Miracles! Smokey and the group are clearly pushing the envelope here – stretching out for a deeper harmony sound, moving towards some of the smoother styles they'd use a bit more in the 70s. The result is a slightly-confused album, but one with some really interesting ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Flying High Together
Tamla, 1972. Near Mint-
Excellent 70s work by Smokey and crew – sort of their way of showing the emerging east coast vocal stars how much talent they still had! The record has a sweet, slightly modern sound – with an approach that hints at Smokey's later Quiet Storm sound, but maybe a bit more laidback ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

Moods Of Marvin Gaye
Tamla, 1966. Very Good+
The moods of Marvin Gaye are many, even at this early point in his career – as the set has the young Marvin really taking off strongly – hitting hard on classic Motown groovers, but also showing a sensitive side at times too! The album kicks off with some killer rhythms on cuts like ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Our Day Will Come
Kapp, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Sublime work from Ruby & The Romantics – a completely unique vocal group that took the one girl/four boys approach to a whole new level! Rotary Connection

Rotary Connection
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
One of the best Rotary Connection albums for Cadet – with an incredible baroque spacey soul sound that still feels very fresh today! Cleveland Eaton & The Garden Of Eaton

Keep Love Alive
Ovation, 1979. Very Good+
A mixture of funky jazz, soul, and disco – recorded with a host of studio players and a smooth jazzy finish. Whispers

So Good
Solar, 1984. Near Mint-
Soaring uptempo soul from The Whispers – still going strong with the Solar sound well into the 80s – and stepping out here in a real hit-making style!
