LP, Vinyl record album

✈
❔
A great collection of Maybelle's big early hits for Savoy – all featuring backings directed by Ernie Wilkins, with a nice jazzy undercurrent. Maybelle's got a robust voice that was one of the first key attempts to bridge gospel, R&B, and jazz – and the album features 10 tracks that include "Rock House", "I Don't Want To Cry", "Jim", "All Of Me", and "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Maroon label pressing, in a red tinted cover. Cover has light wear, a small cut corner, and a bit of seam splitting – but this is a nice copy overall.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band
RCA, 1976. Very Good+
One of the most creative club acts of the 70s – the mighty Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band! Before starting his Kid Creole & the Coconuts combo, August Darnell worked to great fame with Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band – kind of a campy, jazzy ensemble – one that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sylvester

Sylvester
Fantasy, 1977. Very Good
Sylvester's first album for Fantasy – a reworking of his older groove into one that we love more than any other that he ever used – a smooth modern soul style, not really disco, but with a driving approach that would certainly have worked well in the clubs! You gotta give Syl credit ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Original Disco Man
Polydor, 1979. Very Good
Forget the "disco" in the title, because the album's not really disco – or at least not in a way that any disco fan would agree to – just more of a dancefloor-oriented approach to the heavy funk that James had always been cutting in the 70s! Tracks are longer and more uptempo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

Loving Power
Curtom, 1976. Very Good
Later Curtom work from The Impressions – but still plenty darn nice, with a super-dope vocal group approach on the best tracks! The title cut is worth the price of admission alone – as it's a slow-stepping harmony tune that really burns with a sweet mellow feel – sung to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Taste Of Honey

Taste Of Honey
Capitol, 1978. Very Good
Probably the most successful album the Mizell Brothers ever produced, and a fine set of uptempo groovers from this female soul duet! There's some nice jazzy moments underneath the catchy lyrics, and in a way, the album's style is sort of a blueprint for the sound that would emerge over the next ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prince

Parade
Paisley Park, 1986. Very Good Gatefold
Prince in a grand groove – really hitting a new level of funk with a razor-sharp edge – and even blowing away some of his work on previous records! Curtis Mayfield

Heartbeat
Curtom/RSO, 1979. Very Good
A real dancefloor set from Curtis – recorded with some sweet Philly production from the likes of Norman Harris and Bunny Sigler – in the sweeping, soaring, strings-heavy mode of the Philly disco records of the time! And yes, this isn't classic Curtis from the righteous years – ... LP, Vinyl record album
