Stan Getz & Gerry MulliganGetz Meets Mulligan In Hi Fi ... CD
Verve, 1958. Used ... $1.99 3.99
The tenor of Stan Getz meets the baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan – and then they switch things around for half of the record, as Stan picks up the baritone and Mulligan takes on tenor! Gerry always seems to open up whole new sides of his playing when sharing the leader spotlight with another star – and here, in the company of Getz, he hits a shimmering, sparkling sound that's really great, and filled with feeling. Stan's wonderful too – very much in his best mid 50s Verve period – working in a groove that's deep and laidback, with a strong undercurrent of warmth – thanks to familiar rhythm backing from the trio of Lou Levy on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. Titles include "Anything Goes", "Ballad", and "That Old Feeling". CD

TroublemanFirst Phase ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2005. Used ... $5.99
A collection of work from the "first phase" of Troubleman – singles, remixes, and rare tracks recorded over the past few years – assembled here together in a nicely cohesive album! The work's very much in the spirit of that on the other full Troubleman set for Far Out – spacey dancefloor jams that build on 70s fusion, modern broken beats, and some styles from Troubleman's contemporaries on the current London scene. There's a nicely stripped-down quality to a lot of these tracks that we like a lot – one that makes them a bit funkier than expected, as heavy beats and keys dance together in a celebration of groove! Titles include "The First Phase", "The Otherness", "The Switch", and "Intergalactic You Intergalactic Me" by Troubleman – plus "Stereo (Mark Pritchard rmx)" by Stereo People with Kirsty Hawkshaw and "Carambola (Mark Pritchard rmx)" by Azymuth. ✨✧ South Shore CommissionVery Best Of South Shore Commission – Free Man ... CD
Collectables, Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic work by this great little group – a seminal force in the pre-disco club years, with a strident full-on sound that was in the same mode as other groups like BT Express or The Trammps. Includes their big tracks – like "We're On the Right Track", "Train Called Freedom", and "Free Man", in both disco and regular versions. Other titles include "I'd Rather Switch Than Fight" and "Just A Matter Of Time". Good uptempo funk grooves all the way through – and a very righteous soul sound that's still pretty darn fresh! CD

✨✧ Kenny BurrellMoten Swing! – Columbia Records Instrumental Recordings 1961 to 1962 ... CD
Columbia/Euphoria, Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the rarest work ever recorded by guitarist Kenny Burrell – his early 60s instrumental sides for Columbia Records! Kenny only really cut 2 LPs for Columbia at the time – the instrumental album Blusin Around, and the stranger set Weaver Of Dreams, which actually features Kenny on vocals (one of his few albums of the sort.) The set here resurrects Kenny's Columbia work as a musician – by compiling tracks from the Blusin Around album, plus 9 more titles that have never been issued before, but were recorded at the time! Kenny's playing here in nicely laidback settings – small groups that include players like Hank Jones, Illinois Jacquet, Eddie Bert, Jack McDuff, and Leo Wright – a total of 18 tracks in all that represent a strong body of lost work. Titles include "The Switch", "Mambo Twist", "One Mint Julep", "Funk Junction", "Getting In The Groove", "Bluesin Around", "How Could You", and "Opus 21". CD
(2002 Sundazed/Euphoria pressing.)

A live recording that reworks Mondo Grosso's Next Wave album – and adds in a lot of extra bits! The set's got the feel of a spacious amphitheater concert, but is filled with new mixes of Mondo Grosso's soulful club work – interspersed with a few additional tunes, all mixed together live in this unusual setting! This part 2 features the tracks "Blaze It Up", "Shake Ya Body", "Discarga", "Shinin (Mondo Grosso rmx)", and "Blazilian Rhyme (Fearless mix)" – as well as a bonus disc with the tracks "Fire & Ice (Switch voc mix)", "Motormouth (2020 Soundsystem remx)", "Dancefloor Combat", and more live material! ✨✧ VariousSwitched-On Eugene ... CD
Numero, Mid 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The world of moogy music first exploded back in the late 60s – when artists like Bruce Haack, Perry-Kingsley, and others were making all these wonderfully weird records that featured heavy analogue electronics and other playful elements! By the 80s, most of that music had gone away – some migrating to the world of new age, others turning more mainstream – yet up in Eugene, Oregon, there was a small scene that continued the electronic experiments of years past – work that sounded very different than most of the darker cold wave and industrial sounds that were popping up at other points on the globe. This collection offers up a long-overdue look at that scene – and features work from a collective of artists who really continue some of the hippest traditions of the genre – from the early records that Bruce Haack made with Miss Nelson, to some of the weird Mort Garson productions, even to some of the more wigged-out French psych/electronics of the 70s. Some of these tracks have vocals, some are instrumental – and they're all nicely "switched on" – providing a great bridge between the world of Walter Carlos and the Stereolab generation to come. Titles include "Energy" by Kim Carter, "Other Playgrounds" by Peter Kardas, "The Seven Rays" by David Stout, "Finale From A Walk Down Serenity Lane" by Joel Horowitz, "Self Regulation 2" by Carl Juarez, "The Ride" by Talve, "New Snow" by Peter Nothnagle, and "Patterns" by Suse Millemann. Chris ConnorChris Connor/He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not ... CD
Collectables, 1956. Used ... $3.99
Although most of Chris Connor's best recordings for Atlantic have always been darn tough to find, and rarely reissued, this excellent 2-fer makes these classic albums of icy vocals available once again! Chris sings in her best cool voice, with backing by a number of different groups made up of jazz players like Zoot Sims, John Lewis, Milt Hinton, and Oscar Pettiford – plus some larger orchestral arrangements by Ralph Burns. Cuts include "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "My April Heart", "Circus", "Something To Live For", "High On A Windy Hill", "Thursday's Child", "About The Blues", and "Round About". We should also let you know that two tracks have been switched from the Chris Connor album for some reason – possibly because of trouble with the original masters. CD

Sun RaMy Brother The Wind Vol 2 ... CD
Saturn/Evidence, 1970. Used ... $11.99
A pretty darn incredible record from Sun Ra – with a soulful, spiritual approach that's missing from most of his other albums of the time! The album features Ra playing a good deal of organ (dubbed "intergalactic organ" in this case!) – grooving soulfully on some short tracks that almost hit a soul jazz mode, and which recall the late 60s experiments of organist Freddie Roach. One track, "Pleasant Twilight", is actually a pretty catchy groover with some great ensemble vocals – and other nice ones in this mode include "Somewhere Else", "Otherness Blue", and "Somebody Else's World". After those tunes, the album actually gets a bit "out" – with Ra switching to moog, which he uses in a very tripped-out sci-fi sort of way! The moog tracks are spare and spooky – with a real outer space approach, and lots of chunky analogue bits that still manage to be quite tuneful. Titles include "Sun Thoughts", "The Wind Speaks", "World Of The Myth I", and "The Design – Cosmos II". CD

✨✧ Warren ZevonExcitable Boy ... CD
Elektra, 1978. Used ... $4.99
An early moment of genius from Warren Zevon – the kind of record that really set his talents part from the singer/songwriter generation that came before – and made Zevon a key part of a new era of much darker songsmiths! Zevon manages to weave in all these strange moody elements while still delivering songs that are tuneful – often with studio talent that goes back to an earlier generation of LA polish, but which manages to have a bit more edge here in Warren's company. The lasting highlight of the record is probably the oft-played "Werewolves Of London" – but the whole thing is filled with gems – titles that include "Accidentally Like A Martyr", "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner", "Nighttime In The Switching Yard", "Tenderness On The Block", "Veracruz", and "Lawyers Guns & Money". ✨✧ ZoneGimali ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A jazzy duo with a soulful feel – and one of the deepest-sounding sets we've heard on the Irma label in a long time! Zone's got a warmly grooving quality that we really love – an approach that almost reminds us of some of the best British groups trying to do classic American soul at the end of the 80s – but served up here with a few more contemporary touches too – especially in the rhythms, which can be nicely dynamic. Vocals are by both a female and male singer, switching off from track to track – and instrumentation includes great keyboards, piano, guitar, tenor, and trumpet – grooving with a breezily soulful feel on the best numbers. Titles include "Vou Voltar", "Gimali", "Soul Desires", "Finally", "September", "Angel's Wings", "Frontera", "Madrid", and "Slave". CD

✨✧ Anthony BraxtonAnthony Braxton (BYG) ... CD
BYG/Fuel, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Anthony Braxton's great records for BYG, and like the other one, a very cool session that has Braxton playing in a vibe that shows his AACM roots much more clearly than a lot of other sessions! He's playing here with a number of other Chicago expatriates – including Leo Smith on trumpet, Steve McCall on percussion, and Leroy Jenkins on violin – and between them, the four players handle a huge amount of string, reed, percussion, and keyboard instruments, switching off and on in a warmly experimental sound that characterizes the best work of the Chicago avant garde from the time. Tracks include "The Light On the Dalta", "Simple Like", and one of Braxton's weird symbol compositions. Ironically, this French session from the late 60s still stands as one of the best ways to witness the budding Chicago genius of the AACM! CD

✨✧ Decoy & Joe McPheeSpontaneous Combustion (with bonus CD) ... CD
OTOroku (UK), 2013. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Joe McPhee plays here with a Hammond organ trio – a setting that partially gets him back to the soulful sound of his roots, but which still keeps things in the freer mode of later years too! Joe starts out the performance with some wonderful solo work on pocket trumpet – played with these offbeat notes and inventive phrasing that might only be matched by Don Cherry's work on the instrument. The drums from Steve Noble come into the mix slowly, while the Hammond from Alexander Hawkins rolls in on these bold waves of sound – almost more forceful than any organ player of the headiest 70s years – spurred on by some rolling bass from John Edwards. Hammond dominates for the rest of side one – but then Joe switches to tenor, and gets some intimate, soulful space – before the organ comes rolling into the mix again! The 2CD set includes the 37+ minute "Spontaneous Combustion" on Disc One and the more than twice as long (77+ minutes) "Spontaneous Combustion 2" on Disc Two! CD

✨✧ Charles LloydJourney Within ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great 60s moment not just for reedman Charles Lloyd, but also for pianist Keith Jarrett – who was a key part of Charles' group for a few years at the time – and who really opens up on this classic set! Tracks are long and very open – reaching in a spiritual sort of way with definite Coltrane overtones, yet also showing that more complexly rhythmic mode that made Lloyd a standout in previous groups before he was a leader – a quality that's really augmented by the presence of Jack DeJohnette on drums! Lloyd plays both tenor and flute – and Jarrett switches to soprano sax on one number! Titles include"Journey Within", "Love No 3", "Memphis Green" and "Lonesome Child". CD

✨✧ Nick LoweLabour Of Lust (plus bonus track) ... CD
Yep Roc, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Nick Lowe's best albums – the follow up to Jesus Of Cool, and another all-time classic that's especially incredible given how busy Lowe was as a producer at the time! It's a showcase for Nick's brilliance and breadth as a songwriter, with both charming and wickedly barbed guitar pop, country rock and beyond. It takes a particular genius to effortlessly span genres and to not have the results turn into a mess, and Nick Lowe is as particular as anyone. Includes "Cruel To Be Kind", "Cracking Up", "Big Kick, Plain Scrap", "Born Fighter", "Skin Deep", "Switchboard Susan", "Dose Of You", "Love So Fine" and more, plus the bonus track "Basing Street".
