✨✧ Uli Lenz/Cecil McBee/Joe ChambersLive At Sweet Basil ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Uli Lenz really sparkles here – in the company of the tremendous rhythm duo of Cecil McBee on bass and Joe Chambers on drums! The recording's a live one – as you'll know from the title – and the tracks are long, open, and very fluid – balancing some of the modern elements in Uli's piano with the strong, soulful currents that both the bass and drums bring to the music – modes that are especially strong on the original tunes on the album by Lenz, but which really transform the few familiar numbers too. Chambers is a complete delight – and the album's a great reminder of all the wonderful elements he brought to jazz in his early years – on titles that include "Don't Trust The Mirror", "Midnight Candy", "Five For Bob", "Inner Urge", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Freedom Jazz Dance". Drift (UK), 2024. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
The soulful sound of Bukky Leo takes off in all sorts of directions here – served up in a sweet soup of remixes by some great overseas talents! The work has the same Afro Funk vibe as some of Bukky's classic records – complete with his searing tenor work and strong lead vocals – set up in core instrumentation that includes plenty of percussion, keyboards, and super-tight horns – elements that are reworked and expanded here through the different mixes in the set! Tony Allen plays drums on some tracks – and titles include "Scelleton (Gilles Peterson mix)", "Annarkey (Dennis Bovell mix)", "Genre Jam (Leslie Laurence mix)", "Obedun (Orlandon Voorn mix)", "Summer Sax Breeze (Leslie Laurence mix)", and "Unisex Dilemma (Laurie Laurence mix)". P.E.U. Jadan, Early 70s. Very Good ... $14.99
Nice! We don't know if this is the same Love, Devotion, & Happiness that later recorded for RCA – but the single's an obscure one, on a tiny Chicago label, with arrangements by Tom Tom Washington. "Joy Sweet Joy" is a nice mellow mid-tempo track, with a dope production sound, and sweet soulful female vocals. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Vinyl has an edge chip, and plays with a click at the very beginning of "Joy")

Love Unlimited OrchestraMy Sweet Summer Suite ... LP
20th Century, 1976. Very Good ... $4.99
A wonderful album by Barry White – a bit later than some of the early 70s hits, but one of his most satisfying records overall! The perpetual favorite on the album is the great groover "Strange Games & Things", a slow sly funky track that's been sampled often over the years, and which is a perfect summation of the mix of heavy drums and orchestra that made Barry's records so great. The album's also got a lot of other very nice groovers, most of which have a more uptempo sound than "Strange Games", but all of which are very nice. Titles include "Brazilian Love Song", "My Sweet Summer Suite", and "You, I Adore". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has ring and edge wear, partially unglued top seam, and a small split in the bottom seam.)

✨✧ Curtis MayfieldSweet Exorcist ... LP
Curtom, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully wicked album from Curtis Mayfield – one that's not nearly as famous as his Superfly set, but which is every bit as great! The groove here is lean, mean, and totally righteous – a bit more stripped-down than some of the rumbling funk of other Curtom efforts, and served up with a fluid groove that makes the album a killer from start to finish! As with Superfly, there's a nice blend here between uptight funky tracks and some more laidback soul – showcasing both sides of the Curtis Mayfield sound of the 70s – the brash society-changing soul, and the mellower, more fragile voice that first came to prominence in The Impressions. Titles alone tell you the vibe of the record – and they include "Ain't Got Time", "To Be Invisible", "Kung Fu", "Suffer", "Power to the People", and "Make Me Believe In You". LP, Vinyl record album

Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2003. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
Two reed geniuses, working together in sublime formation – an extended, open live performance setting – which makes for incredible interplay throughout! There's a beautiful balance between unity and conflict going on here – Evan Parker and Joe McPhee both blowing soprano and tenor, with McPhee on a small bit of pocket cornet as well – crafting lines that sometimes snake out alongside each other, flowering in the open space of improvisation – sometimes chafe next to each other, but in ways that create a magical tension of sonic possibilities – growing to a sound that's way more than the sum of its parts. The set features seven live improvisations – all recorded in the space of the Chicago Cultural Center in 2003. CD

A contemporary gem from Paulette McWilliams – the Chicago singer who was part of Rufus before Chaka Khan, worked with Luther Vandross, and who's given the world decades of great contributions after cutting her rare solo debut on Fantasy Records in the 70s! This set shows Paulette very much in charge of her game, and working at a level that really lives up to her legacy in soul music – with well-crafted tunes that really gain a lot from her vocals, set up in these lean, but grooving arrangements that always let you know that the singer is the star of the scene! Titles include "Sometimes Your Eyes", "New Tunes Old Grooves", "Share", "These Are The Sweet Things", "Tell Me You Love Me", "Take A Drink Of Me", and "That's How I Am". CD

✨✧ Stephanie MillsSweet Sensation ... LP
20th Century, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Stephanie Mills in fine formation here – working with the team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, who helped the lady reach the heights of her career in the early 80s! The sound here is catchy and contemporary, but hardly ever too commercial – just relaxed and grooving, in a mode that lets Stephanie's vocals flow nicely over the top, but with a bit more of an easygoing feel than in her records of previous years. As usual, Lucas and Mtume bring a nice touch of jazz into the album – a subtle warmth that makes the best moments sparkle, really resonating nicely with Mills' vocals. Titles include the massive hit "Never Knew Love Like This Before" – plus "Sweet Sensation", "Try My Love", "I Just Wanna Say", 'Wish That You Were Mine", "D-a-n-c-i-n'", "Still Mine", and "Mixture Of Love". ✨✧ Sugar Minott/Johnny OsbourneBitter Sweet/Reggae On Broadway ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of great records from the production hands of Prince Jammy – back to back on a single CD! First up is Bitter Sweet – one of those key records that helped Sugar Minott earn the sweet reputation that really echoed his name – as the set's got these easygoing grooves that are perfect for his warmly crackling vocals – richly expressive, but without every sounding overdone – all set up in these great instrumental elements produced and arranged by Prince Jammy! The groove is different than some of the sharper modes that were creeping in during the digital generation – very casual, with a quality that has the easygoing vocals from Minott stepping out nicely on cuts that include "I'm Not For Sale", "Give The People", "Never Too Young", "Be Careful", "Right Track", "Can't Get Over", "Save The Children", and "This World". Reggae On Broadway is a gem from Johnny Osbourne – hardly the kind of album with polish and glam that you'd expect from a Broadway title, and instead this mellow, laidback session that really showcases the genius of Prince Jammy in the studio! Given the date of the recording, things could be a lot more commercial, or a lot cleaner in a digital way – but Jammy keeps the proceedings casual and cool, which lets those magnificent vocals of Osbourne flow out in a really great way. Titles include "Let Me Your Chopper", "Live Right", "Folly Ranking", "Water Pumping", "Reggae On Broadway", "Mr Walker", "Sing Along", and "Can't Leave Jah". Great Doctor Bird package – excellent sound, and very detailed notes! CD

✨✧ Hank MobleyHank Mobley In Holland – To One So Sweet Stay That Way ... CD
Dutch Jazz Archive (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A lost smoker from the legendary tenorist Hank Mobley – recorded relatively late in his career, at a time when his music on Blue Note was really taking some great new directions! The approach here is maybe a bit more straightforward than those records, but still completely amazing – as Mobley's soloing with all these unusual twists and turns, and phrasing that you never would have heard a few years before – all while working with a variety of Dutch backing combos on these live performances from the Netherlands in 1968! One group features Pim Jacobs on piano, Wim Overgaauw on guitar, Ruud Jacobs on bass, and future avant legend Han Bennink on drums – and another features the great Rob Agerbeek on piano, with Hans Van Rossem on bass and Cees See on drums. There's also two studio performances with the larger Hobby Orkest ensemble – quite an unusual setting for Hank, and a great one too – and titles include "Summertime", "Twenty Four & More", "Three Way Split", "Vierd Blues", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "Sonny's Tune", "Autumn Leaves", and "Blues By Five". Jackie MooreSweet Charlie Babe ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A classic set of 70s crossover deep soul – recorded in the mode of similar work by Betty Wright or Laura Lee, and done with a similar mix of raw southern vocals and tighter production! About half the work was handled by the team of Dave Crawford and Brad Shapiro – working in the Criteria Studios in Miami to give Jackie a sound that's similar to Shapiro's work with Millie Jackson. The other half was produced in Philly, by the Young Professionals team of LeBaron Taylor, Tony Bell, and Phil Hurt – who give Jackie a warm, gliding, sweet 70s Philly groove! And although you might think that this Philly/Miami split would make for a mixed bag of tunes, the album's surprisingly unified – and in a way, does plenty to link together the growing dancefloor scenes in both cities. Titles include "Willpower", "Both Ends Against The Middle", "Time", "Something In A Look", "Clean Up Your Own Yard", "If", and "Darling Baby". LP, Vinyl record album

A really bold step forward for David Murray – a seminal live recording that features one of the hippest big bands you'll ever hope to find! Murray really uses the date as a chance to express the full range of his musical talents – and often shows modes that are more traditional than you might expect, yet which are always touched with an undercurrent of modernism! The musical palette here is quite different than either the outside or inside sessions recorded by Murray with a small group at the time – and he really reaches back through a rich history of jazz in the performance, and updates it wonderfully with help from players who include Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Olu Dara on cornet, Craig Harris on trombone, Vincent Chaney on French horn, Steve Coleman on alto and soprano sax, Rod Williams on piano, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. There's a quiet genius going on here – a simple but powerful take on southern soul that pushes the genre into a new level of sophistication while still holding onto its roots. The album's a lost southern soul classic that should be on the shelf of anyone who digs male deep soul vocals – and we've never been certain why Ollie never scored bigger with the set at the time! Prestige, 1972. Used ... $9.99
2 sides of sweet electric grooving from Houston Person – records that feature his soulful tenor set in larger arrangements than on his earlier small combo Prestige sessions, in a mode that's a bit like some of the larger jazz sets coming out on CTI and Kudu at the time! Like Stanley Turrentine, who also made a similar shift during this period, Houston turns out to be an extremely strong soloist in this sort of setting – hitting new notes on the laidback ballads, and playing with a richly expressive style that somehow seems even more possible than before, since the core rhythms and melodies are handled by the other players in the ensemble, and Houston's main job is just to blow freely on his solos. There's a few funky numbers on the set, but the mellow tracks are actually pretty darn great too – thanks to work by players that include Bernard Purdie, Joe Beck, Ron Carter, Ernie Hayes, and Grady Tate. Titles include "Sweet Buns & Barbeque", "Put It Where You Want It", "Groove Thang", "Down Here On The Ground", "Let's Call This", "The Pimp", "A Song For You", and "This Masquerade". CD

✨✧ John PrineCrooked Piece Of Time – The Atlantic & Asylum Albums 1971 to 1980 (John Prine/Diamonds In The Rough/Sweet Revenge/Common Sense/Bruised Orange/Pink Cadillac/Storm Windows) (7CD set) ... CD
Atlantic, 1970s. Used 7CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic run of records – music that firmly established John Prine as one of the most inventive singer/songwriters of the 70s! Prine rose up out of the Chicago folk scene of the 60s – but he soon became something different than just a folk or country singer – even though he was admired strongly by both worlds of music. Instead, John's songs took on this new sense of wit and bite learned from folk, but delivered in a style that was maybe less preachy – but also not as rural as the vibe of country tunesmiths who were changing things up at the time. There's definitely echoes of the work of Kris Kristofferson or Shel Silverstein in Prine's words – but the execution is completely his own, and transforms wonderfully over the course of these records – at a level that shows just how much the singer was able to keep ahead of the pack, and keep his contributions relevant over the years. The box features the full albums John Prine, Diamonds In The Rough, Sweet Revenge, Common Sense, Bruised Orange, Pink Cadillac, and Storm Windows – in LP replica sleeves, with new notes, and poster inserts too. Psychic TVDreams Less Sweet ... LP
Holophonic (UK), 1983. Very Good+ 2LP ... $59.99
One of the greatest moments ever from Psychic TV – and a really stunning surprise after the breakup of Throbbing Gristle! Genesis P Orridge and Peter Cristopherson go in a completely different direction here – a mode that still holds onto some of the noise lessons learned in TG, but which also shows this incredible love of both more complicated pop modes from the 60s, and some of the farther reaches of minimalism as well! The album sports these tremendous ballads with eerie vocals by Genesis – including "The Orchids" and "White Nights" – which are both eerie recastings of an older mode of UK pop love songs – and there's other tracks that maybe echo a bit of Meredith Monk, or some of the underground experimentalists on the Lovely Records scene – including bits that have weird phone rings, dog barks, and other great touches. A spare and subtle use of noise and darker sounds wends its way throughout – but never with the heavier handed touches of later years – and titles include "Hymn 23", "The Orchids", "Botanica", "Iron", "Glove", "Always Is Always", "White Nights", "Finale", "Eleusis", "Medmenham", "Ancient Lights", "Proof On", "Eden 1 Eden 2 Eden 3", "Clouds Without Water", "Black Moon", "Silver And Gold", "In The Nursery", and "Circle". The players are some of the hippest that Roach ever worked with – and include Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Clifford Jordan, and Julian Priester – and the album features some of the best-ever singing from Abbey Lincoln! Abbey's incredible on the track "Mendacity", an incredibly haunting Civil Rights-era number that should go right up there with "Strange Fruit", and which features wonderful alto work from Dolphy! She also sings wordlessly on the track "Garvey's Ghost" – and then sits out the rest of the set so that Max and the group can wail on the tracks "Praise For A Martyr", "Man From South Africa", and "Tender Warriors". The players are some of the hippest that Roach ever worked with – and include Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Clifford Jordan, and Julian Priester – and the record features some of the best-ever singing from Abbey Lincoln! Incredibly hip – and a perfect blend of soul, jazz, politics, and pure righteous spirit! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 70s green label stereo pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear, mostly split top seam, and is bent a bit at the front panel.)

Janus, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A very strange record that mixes funky backing with steel guitar playing, for a weird guitar-based soulful sound that's unlike anything else we can describe! Harvey Mandel produced the album, and it's got a little bit of the feel of his work from the same time, but the drums are tighter, and heavier, and there's some very nice moments on here with a good break-heavy potential. Cuts include "Million Dollar Feeling", "Del Conto Shuffle", "Joaquin", "Cause & Effect", and "Smoked Fish". LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent album of 50s work from Edgar Sampson – an older saxophonist from the swing years in Harlem, and a heck of a great composer as well! The session features Sampson revisiting 12 of his famous classics – including a number that were big tunes in the Benny Goodman and Chick Webb books. Players on the set include Mile Yaner and Hymie Schertzer on alto saxes, Boomie Richman and George Berg on tenor, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, and Tyree Gleen and Lou McGarity on trombone. Titles include "Happy & Satisfied", "Lullaby Of Rhythm", "If Dreams Come True", "Cool & Groovy", "Blue Lou", and "Don't Be That Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marlena ShawSweet Beginnings ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real classic from Marlena Shaw – a key 70s album that has the singer moving back to soul after some years in the jazz side of the spectrum – but with an approach that still holds onto all the sophistication she picked up along the way! The record's got some wonderful arrangements and production from Bert DeCoteaux – who brings Marlena into modern soul territory with some warm, sweet sounds that work perfectly in the mellow moments, and hit a few nice grooves too. A key illustration of the album's strength is the remake of "Go Away Little Boy" – done here with a great monologue in which Marlena kicks out her "little boy", then swoons as he begins to make love to her. That cut is kicked off by nicely mellow "Yu Ma", and other tracks include "No Deposit, No Return", "Sweet Beginnings", "Johnny", "Walk Softly", "The Writing Is On The Wall", "Look At Me Look At You", and "I Think I'll Tell Him". A great later date from Woody Shaw – fully recorded in the CD generation, which gives the trumpeter even more room to stretch out than usual! The tracks are perfect demonstrations of the way that Shaw can open up and really fill the space of a longer tune – improvising soulful magic at a level that's maybe only matched by Freddie Hubbard during his return to acoustic jazz during the same time. The overall sounds are more inside than some of Woody's albums of the 70s, but no less inspiring – and the group here features Fred Henke on piano, Neil Swainson on bass, and Alex Deutsch on drums – a great rhythm section that hits some warmly flowing rhythms. Titles include "The Dragon", "Joshua C", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "The Organ Grinder", and "Just A Ballad For Woody". CD

SweetGive Us A Wink ... LP
Capitol, 1976. Very Good+ ... $6.99 11.99
Classic pop glam from Sweet – easily one of the best torchbearers of the genre in the 70s! The album's got a sweetly compressed sound that's right up there with the best of Queen – but even more rocking overall, and without any of the too-flowery or too-flashy moments. Tunes are stompingly catchy, and filled with loads of fuzzy guitar that's mixed right down into the roots of the rhythms – and although this album doesn't have as many hits as some of the group's other work, it's a killer set through and through. Titles include "The Lies In Your Eyes", "Lady Starlight", "Action", "Yesterday's Rain", "Healer", "White Mice", and "Keep It In". LP, Vinyl record album

People/Universal (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A supremely fantastic album, and one that's always woefully overlooked in discussions of James Brown's incredible People label! Sweet Charles, Charles Sherell, was a great lost soul vocalist who had a voice that was warm and mellow, with a sweetness that was often missing from James' singing – but which sounded great with his arrangements and production. Fred Wesley and Dave Matthews arranged this one and only album, and the record's a great blend of sweet soul tracks, funky numbers, and other stellar grooves. There's a killer version of "Soul Man", that begins with a very tasty break; the monster "Yes, It's You", which has a sweetly sliding intro that's ripe for sampling; the righteous political "Why Can't I Be Treated Like A Man" – and lots of other nice ones too! Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic run of music from a group who were key to the rising sound of soul music on Atlantic Records during the 60s – but who sometimes didn't always get their due! The Sweet Inspirations have roots in gospel – as the famous Drinkard Sisters – and they've also got a legacy that goes beyond these recordings, including later group sessions, and solo 70s fame by Cissy Houston of the group. But here, they're completely at their prime – known to bigger audiences for their background vocals behind Aretha Franklin and others, and working with a completely sublime blend of their gospel roots and newly righteous 60s soul modes – given superb accompaniment and production in a series of recordings done in New York, Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and Sigma Sound in Philly! This set features a huge amount of material – everything the girls recorded for Atlantic – the full albums Sweet Inspirations, Songs Of Inspiration, What The World Needs Now Is Love, Sweets For My Sweet, and Sweet Sweet Soul – plus non-LP single tracks, and enough material for a 1970 bonus album too, most of it never issued at the time. The package is the best we've ever seen on the group – an instant classic in our book – and it features 66 tracks in all, plus a big booklet of notes. CD

Atlantic/Spy, 1969/1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 of the best albums ever by one of the greatest female soul groups of all time! The Sweet Inspirations were first known for their backing work behind Aretha Franklin on her classic Atlantic albums – but by the time of these two records, they'd blossomed into a fantastic soul act on their own. Sweets For My Sweet is a great set that sticks in the deep soul mode of their earliest albums – rootsy, with a warm Muscle Shoals-ish glow that's all-soul all the way! Sweet Sweet Soul features Philly work by a young Gamble & Huff team – taking the girls style into a sweeter uptown mode with some really great arrangements by Bobby Martin! Both records are totally great – and back to back, they make for a 21 track CD that's one of the best female soul sets in our racks at the moment. Titles include "Two Can Play The Game", "Gotta Find A Brand New Lover", "Them Boys", "Flash In The Pan", "Let Me Be Lonely", "Don't Go", "It's Not Easy", "But You Know I Love You", and "Chained". CD

A shameless bit of self-promotion here – as Atlantic has The Sweet Inspirations cover "To Love Somebody", one of the strongest songs written by labelmates The Bee Gees. An obscure group from the Michigan scene of the 70s – but one who work with a breezy vibe that feels a lot more like some of the Bay Area material we know from the time! These guys bring together a bit of jazz, touches of folk, and even some Brazilian currents – all in a mode that's nicely groovy on most numbers, and served up with a great degree of indie charm! Vocals shift between male and female leads – the latter of which are sometimes paired up on some of the best tracks, ala Sergio Mendes – creating a fullness that really lets those tunes flow! We're still not sure what was going on in the water in Michigan to create the group's special sound – but it's definitely been something that's keep the album going with collectors over the years. Titles include the funky fusion "People Suite" – plus"Surround Me", "Gotta Find Out", "Papa Taco", "Good Day", and "The Earth Has Music". CD features the bonus tracks "Angisa Alusa" and "Povo" – both mighty nice live cuts! CD
