SantanaAbraxas (Half-Speed Mastered) ... LP
Columbia, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $59.99
A set that's way more than the classic rock outing of some of the group's Bay Area contemporaries – as the young Carlos Santana finds a way to mix inspirations from blues and Latin music into this fierce fusion of so many different elements at once – stretching out, jamming, and touching decades of listeners in the process! The whole thing's a perfect sonic blend – guitar, keyboards, and plenty of percussion – on the group's stunning remake of "Oye Como Va", their fusion of "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen", and the cuts "Se A Cabo", "Samba Pa Ti", "El Nicoya", and "Singing Winds Crying Beasts". SantanaSantana (1971) ... LP
Columbia, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $16.99
One of the most searing, soaring albums ever from Santana – a set that takes all the power of the previous two records, and packs it into one tight little set! There's plenty of Latin influences going on – mixed with heavy fuzz from Carlos, and lots of jazz and funky touches too – way more happening on the rhythm tip than most of Santana's contemporaries – which is why the record continues to find such a wonderfully wide audience over the years. Drop cuts like "Batuka","Toussaint L'Overture", "Jungle Strut", or "Para Los Rumberos" next to tracks by War, Mandrill or Tower Of Power and you'll see what we mean – and titles also include "No One To Depend On","Taboo", "Guajira" and "Everything's Coming Our Way". ✨✧ Alice Coltrane & Carlos SantanaIlluminations ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really mindblowing collaboration between two of the most spiritual mainstream musicians of the early 70s – legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and spiritual jazz guru Alice Coltrane! The set came at a time when Santana was reaching for much deeper ideas in both his music and his personal life – and Coltrane turned out to be a perfect creative fit, as she'd already been down the path with her own music for years – and helps Carlos here find an incredible setting that really lets his new vision take flight! The album's a very collaborative effort – with Alice on piano, organ, and harp – but Coltrane also brings in some fuller arrangements on half of the tracks – really opening things up, alongside other musicians who include Jack DeJohnette on drums, Dave Holland on bass, Jules Broussard on soprano sax and flute, and Tom Coster on both acoustic and electric piano. The strings are sublime – as heavenly as on Alice's own records – and titles include "Angel Of Air Angel Of Water", "Bliss The Eternal Now", "Angel Of Sunlight", "Illuminations", and "Guru Sri Chinmoy Aphorism". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 70s US pressing, with inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Jorge SantanaJorge Santana ... LP
Tomato, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A stone 70s classic from Carlos Santana's lesser-known brother – a set that effortlessly brings together Latin and soul, often with the same sort of vibe as the Coke Escovedo records on Mercury from the same time! Jorge plays guitar, but lead vocals are from Richard Bean (of Malo and Sapo fame) – often in a sweetly crackling style that's kind of a smoother 70s update of Latin Soul modes from a few years before. Tunes are all lively, with nice hooks – never too uptempo, and carried off with a jazzy edge on most numbers. Titles include "Sandy", "Seychells", "Nobody's Perfect", "Love The Way", "We Were There", and "Tonight You're Mine". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SantanaWelcome ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great early 70s effort from Carlos Santana – one that finds him moving in a more jazzy direction, with supple rhythms underpinning his guitar solos! There's even some outright funky moments, with the overall sound leaning towards a more spiritual vibe – no doubt the influence of collaborations with John McLaughlin and Alice Coltrane, who even helped arrange one number. The set's got great work from jazz-based players too – vocals from Flora Purim and Leon Thomas, and some killer reeds from Joe Farrell – on titles that include "Love Devotion & Surrender", "Samba De Sausalito", "When I Look Into Your Eyes", "Yours Is The Light", "Mother Africa","Light Of Life", "Flame Sky", and "Welcome". ✨✧ Cold BloodSisyphus ... LP
San Francisco, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best albums ever recorded by this legendary Bay Area funk combo – a key part of that city's crossover scene, and a group who always deserves a second listen! The album's a mixture of Sly Stone funk, Tower Of Power horns, and some of the hard-burning guitar/organ lines of groups like Santana – no surprise, since all 3 powerhouse acts were contemporaries of Cold Blood! The album includes the cut "Your Good Thing", a nice remake of the Hayes/Porter classic that features guest vocals by The Pointer Sisters. Other cuts include the monster 7 minute instrumental jammer "Shop Talk", plus "Funky On My Back", "Too Many People", and "I Can't Stay". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ GypsyIn The Garden ... LP
Metromedia, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Only the second album from Gypsy, but one that really has the group opening up their wings to soar – especially on the longer tunes that really feature some nicely freewheeling interplay between organ and guitar! Yet even on the shorter cuts, the sound between the two is great too – driven on by some rhythms that feature very tasty use of congas, in a way that might draw some slight comparison to Santana, although these guys maybe have some more mid-American elements in the mix too, almost a dash of light Allman Brothers at times! Whatever the comparisons, though, the whole thing is great – a really under-discovered gem that deserves to be in the bigger pantheon of the time – with cuts that include "Here In The Garden", "Blind Man", "Reach Out Your Hand", "Around You", and "As Far As You Can See". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the die-cut gatefold cover, with light wear, small split on the bottom.)
Also available In The Garden (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP 25.99

✨✧ Gato BarbieriTropico ... LP
A&M, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A far reaching late 70s set from Gato Barbieri – a record that blends fusiony jazz funk, lush stings, and Latin rhythms and fluid solos on a varied batch of tunes! One of the more interesting things about the production is that those varied approaches often come into play within the same tunes – with clean, lean fusiony bass and percussion underneath swelling string accents, showing Barbieri was unafraid to intermingle myriad influences at the time. Titles include a take on Caetano Veloso's "Odara", plus "Poinciana (Song Of The Tree)", "Latin Lady" (which guest Carlos Santana trading solos with Gato over tropical jazz funk backing), "She Is Michelle", "Where Is The Love", "Evil Eyes" and "Bolero". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch.)

Possible matches36

✨✧ Coke EscovedoCoke ... LP
Mercury, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible fusion of all the greatness that was going on in the Bay Area scene of the 70s – put together by Coke Escovedo – the brother of Pete and Sheila E, former leader of Azteca, and onetime member of Santana! Yet this set sounds like none of that previous work at all – and instead is great grooving soul, infused both with the sophistication of fusion and some of the Latin elements of Escovedo's roots – all produced to perfection by Patrick Gleeson – who most folks know for his own spacey keyboard work with Bennie Maupin and others! The mix of elements going on is really complex, but comes across with effortless ease – one of those rare fusions that could happen at a bigger label when all the right talents were brought together. The record kind of "out-Fantasys" the best of Fantasy Records in the Bay Area at the time – and makes great use of singers Linda and Calvin Tillery, plus the great Harvey Mason on drums. Titles include wonderful covers of Lamont Dozier's "Why Can't We Be Lovers" and Leon Ware's "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" – plus the tracks "What Are You Under", "No One To Depend On", "Easy Come Easy Go", and "Make It Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Larry YoungLawrence Of Newark ... LP
Perception, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Incredible stuff from the jazz underground of Newark! This is one of the rarest albums ever recorded by jazz organist Larry Young – cut for the tiny Perception label during the early 70s, and featuring some of the cream of the New Jersey jazz underground. The album's got playing that bridges a number of Young's different styles – from his straighter soul jazz work at Blue Note, to his harder jamming with Santana and John McLaughlin, to his more fusion oriented albums for Arista. James Blood Ulmer's on guitar, but there's also a large ensemble of excellent players, and lots of other percussion and cool instrumentation that really gives the album an "out there" sound! Titles include "Sunshine Fly Away", "Saudia", "Hello Your Quietness", and "Khalid Of Space". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – a great copy! Cover has some very light wear, but is great overall.)

Cotillion, 1970. Near Mint- 3LP Trifold ... Out Of Stock
A seminal album from the end of the 60s – the triple-length soundtrack to the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969 – pulled from all the many hours of material recorded for the film of the event! The set list reads not just like a "who's who" of hipness at the time – but also expands to show just how wide the range of sounds was in the underground – strands that move past the obvious rock material that you might expect, and which have the record standing as a great memory to the time – with maybe more diversity than some of the more monolithic memories! Features work by Canned Heat, Arlo Guthrie, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Richie Havens, Santana, Ten Years After, The Who, Country Joe & The Fish, Sly & The Family Stone, Joan Baez, Butterfield Blues Band, Joe Cocker, Jefferson Airplane, John B Sebastian – and yes, Sha Na Na. ✨✧ ChangoChango ... LP
ABC, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Heady work from Chango – a 70s combo with a style that's right in keeping with the Chicano Rock scene in LA! The group mix together a swirling blend of guitars, organ, and percussion – clearly inspired by Santana, but with rootsier touches, and a bit more energy to groove openly. Most tracks have vocals, but the real strength of the set is the instrumentation – especially on the keyboards, which get pretty out there on some of the best cuts! Titles include the extended jammer "Chango", plus "Mira Pa Ca", "Bembe", "Solid Karma", "Fire Over Water", "Walk On Hell", and "Caminando". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Luis GascaLuis Gasca (For Those Who Chant) ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest solo albums ever issued by Latin jazz trumpeter Luis Gasca – a set that really expands on his debut for Atlantic Records, and which brings in a whole host of early 70s west coast Latin influences! The style here is very laidback and open – a bit like some of the Chicano funk coming out of the LA scene at the time, but a fair bit more jazz oriented overall – with long lean solos from both Gasca on trumpet and Joe Henderson on tenor sax, set up in a half-electric set of rhythms laid out on guitar, organ, keyboards, bass, and plenty of percussion! Other players here are all top-shelf too – and include Carlos Santana, George Cables, Stanley Clarke, Coke Escovedo, and Lenny White. The album features 4 long tracks – "Spanish Gypsy", "Street Dude", "La Raza", and "Little Mama". LP, Vinyl record album

A seminal bit of Latin funk from the Bay Area scene of the early 70s – the second album from Malo, and an even harder-hitting jam session than the first! The group are really in top form here – taking off with Santana-inspired riffs that are filled with heavy percussion, soaring organ, and guitar from Carlos' brother Jorge – all matched by some incredible horn work from trumpeter Forrest Bachtel and a young Hadley Caliman – sounding especially great here before his solo years as a jazz artist! The legendary Francisco Aguabella is on conga, and tracks include "Momolombo", "Oye Mama", "I'm For Real", "Midnight Thoughts", "Hela", and "Latin Bugaloo". LP, Vinyl record album

Milestone, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from Flora Purim – one of the wonderful west coast bits of Braziliana recorded in the Fantasy Records studios during the mid 70s! The record's a perfect example of the greatness that arose when Brazil's best talents had the chance to work with some of America's best jazz and fusion players – a sublime fusion of talents that resulted in a groove that would dominate the west coast scene for most of the 70s. In this case, Flora's backed by a great group that includes Hadley Caliman, Oscar Castro-Neves, Carlos Santana, Ron Carter, George Duke, Earl Klugh, and Airto – and the set includes a great choice of breezy numbers, perfect for Flora's vocals, like "Vera Cruz", "Silver Sword", "Casa Forte", "Mountain Train", and "Search For Peace". ✨✧ McCoy Tyner (with Phyllis Hyman)Looking Out ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An 80s album by McCoy Tyner, but easily one of his most soulful sessions ever – thanks to help from Phyllis Hyman and a host of great guest stars! The sound's a bit more tightly arranged than some of Tyner's 70s sessions, but there's still plenty of fire here too – a bit of a Latin inspiration in the rhythms, really giving new focus to McCoy's post-Coltrane sense of searching spirituality! Hyman sings wonderfully on the album's classic "Love Surrounds Us Everywhere", a brilliant blend of jazz and soul that recalls mid 70s Norman Connors – and on the beautiful ballad "I'll Be Around". Other players here include Gary Bartz, Stanley Clarke, and Carlos Santana – who comes off surprisingly nicely in this setting. Tracks include "Love Surrounds Us Everywhere", "Hannibal", "I'll Be Around", "Senor Carlos", "In Search Of My Heart", and "Island Birdie". LP, Vinyl record album

The sound's a bit tighter and more professional – in keeping with the sound you'd expect from such an elite bunch – but Walden's jazzy approach to smooth soul is still nicely in place on the best cuts.
