✨✧ Rolf KuhnSolarius ... CD
Celeste (Japan), 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the hippest work we've ever heard from German clarinetist Rolf Kuhn – a beautiful set from the 60s, and one that's filled with modern touches, but never goes too far out! Rolf's clarinet is definitely sharper here than in the decade before – informed by much of the modern jazz changes around him, and stretching out in space that's nicely open, and often moved along with some modal rhythms on the bottom. As with some of his other European contemporaries, Kuhn manages to use the instrument in completely new ways than before – no trad jazz clarinet lines that echo Benny Goodman's generation – and instead, an extremely evocative sound that often carries some nicely exotic overtones. The rest of the group's great too – and includes brother Joachim Kuhn on piano, Michal Urbaniak on tenor and soprano sax, and Czeslaw Bartkowski on drums. Titles include "Lady Orsina", "Mountain Jump", "Minor Impressions", "Solarius", and "Soldat Tadeusz". CD

✨✧ Rolf & Joachim KuhnEast Berlin 1966 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Polystar (Japan), 1966. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A rare early slice of work by the quartet of Rolf & Joachim Kuhn – a set originally intended for release on Atlantic Records in the 60s, but unissued until now! The album's far more modern than most of the group's other work from the time – very angular and exploratory – with tracks that have a stop/start sort of quality, letting Rolf stretch out sparely on clarinet lines that are arguably as revolutionary as Jimmy Giuffre's work on the instrument – as Joachim's piano strikes out in bold colors that clearly mark him as one of the best mainstream modernists of the 60s. Titles include "The Sound Of Cats", "Turning Point", "Golem", "Don't Run", and "Flowers In The Dark". CD

Oscar PettifordOscar Pettiford Lost Tapes – Germany 1958/1959 ... CD
Jazz Haus (Germany), 1958/1959. Used ... $11.99
Rare work from the German years of bassist Oscar Pettiford – a late 50s stretch when Pettiford got even more freedom to explore his musical vision than in the US! The material here often features Pettiford's bass or cello in the company of some of the best European soloists of the time – often in an intimate mode that makes the set revelatory not just for Oscar's own performances, but for those of his compatriots as well! Highlights include a reading of "But Not For Me" that includes Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, a take on "Sophisticated Lady" with Lucky Thompson on soprano sax, a reading of "A Smooth One" with Rolf Kuhn on clarinet, "OP" with Hans Koller on tneor, and "My Little Cello" with Attila Zoller on guitar. Material was recorded at the SWF studios, and the sound quality is great! CD features a few more tracks than the LP – including a few live performances too. CD

✨✧ VariousModern At The German Jazz Festival 1966 ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1966. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible meeting of talents – both American and European jazz musicians coming together at a festival that must have been one hell of a event – certainly more exciting than just about any jazz festival we've ever attended in our lifetime! Unlike other festival recordings, this isn't just any sort of rehash of standards, done by all-star groups – and instead showcases some of the best modern jazz talents on both sides of the Atlantic in the mid 60s – all trying to outdo each other with their sense of originality and creativity – stretching out on material that definitely equals their studio recordings of the time, and which may well even show them in a more adventurous mode! The recording quality is excellent – and both the sharpness of the music and the presentation recall some of the best early MPS/Saba Records material of the 60s – which is where we'd definitely rank these gems. This first volume is a bit more inside than the second – and features material that includes "Mobile" and "Plakate" by Albert Mangelsdorff, "Guarachi Garo" by Klaus Doldinger, "Piece For Two" by Don Menza, "Blues In F" by Hans Koller, "Jahrgang 37" and "Nordlicht" by Horst Jankowski with Helmut Brandt, "Warm Up & Swing" and "Jet Set" by Erwin Lehn, "I Remember Clifford" by Benny Bailey, "Salute To Miles" by Max Gregor, "Friday Blues" by Wolfgang Schluter, and "Gemini Waltz" by Rolf Kuhn and Klaus Doldinger. ✨✧ VariousInternational Holy Hill Jazz Meeting ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A legendary moment in European free jazz – performances all recorded on a single Sunday in 1969 – but which stand as some of the most powerful music of the time! The vibe here is often in the best spirit of early FMP, or maybe the most outside work of MPS – and the recording quality equals the best avant jazz on both labels – with very long performances on each track that represent the pinnacle of all players involved! One side alone is worth the price of admission – a searing track titled "Finally", performed by an octet with Peter Brotzmann at the helm, alongside Evan Parker on tenor and soprano sax, Fred Van Hove on piano, Paul Rutherford on trombone, Peter Kowald on bass, and Pierre Favre on drums. Favre returns on "Let's Talk About The Weather" – played by a trio with Kowad on bass and Irene Schweizer on piano. Other tracks include "Five To Five" and "Gluga Gluga Blues" by the Joki Freund Quintet, "In Memory Of John Coltrane" by Marion Brown, "Vibration" by the group of saxophonist Joe Fiera and trombonist Ed Kroger, and "Circus Live" by a quartet led by Rolf Kuhn on electric clarinet, with Joachim Kuhn on piano and Stu Martin on drums.
