Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsAfro Futuristic Dreams ... LP
Strut (UK), 2023. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 29.99
Bold new work from the legendary Pyramids ensemble – a spiritual jazz group who go back to the 70s, but who've reemerged in recent years with a renewed sense of energy, and a very forward-thinking sound! Leader Idris Ackamoor is still a master of tone and feeling on reeds – including alto and tenor, plus some other instrumentation as well – and he also vocalizes a bit on the record too hitting some righteous expressions that are in the spirit of Leon Thomas or Dwight Trible, mixed along with instrumentation from other players on drums, percussion, keyboards, trumpet, trombone, and guitar. The album's got a beautifully positive vibe – and titles include "Police Dem", "First Peoples", "Afro Futuristic Dreams", "Garland Rose", "Truth To Power", and "Requiem For The Ancestors". ✨✧ Dead PrezLets Get Free ... LP
Loud/Get On Down, 2000. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 30.98
The dawn of millennium classic by Dead Prez – and angry, revolution-minded effort from a period on major label hip hop that sorely lacked such strident players – and if it didn't make any huge waves commercially, that only strengthens its legacy! Sticman & M1 are at the top of their game lyrically, the beats are are exciting to this day, and it all adds up to one of the strongest politically minded hip hop records of its time. Titles include "Wolves", "Hip Hop", "They Schools", "The Pistol", "Discipline", "Enemy Lines", "Mind Sex", "Propaganda", "You'll Find A Way", "Police State", and many more. LP, Vinyl record album

FelaKalakuta Show (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Knitting Factory, 1976. New Copy ... $24.99 25.99
The album begins with the side-long "Kalakuta Show" – one of the most powerful tunes ever recorded by Fela Kuti, as it describes a police attack on his compound and all the violence that followed – but all while Tony Allen and Africa 70 serve up these amazing riffing grooves that are topped by Fela's work on tenor and vocals! The flipside is an equally powerful political message – the great "Don't Make Ganran Ganran", a commentary on wealth inequality in Nigeria – and a cut that's every bit as great a groover as the first! The back cover also includes "real picture of police raid on Kalakuta Republic Africa 70 House and Fela's wound after". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AC Soul Symphony (Dave Lee/Joey Negro)Metamorphosis – Part 2 ... LP
Z Records (UK), 2023. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest projects we've ever heard from the mighty Dave Lee – and that's saying a lot, given all the excellent records he's given us under the name of Joey Negro, Sunburst Orchestra, and other related projects! Here, Dave mixes his keen ear for funky club with some of the great cop/crime grooves of the mid 70s – particularly the kind of work that might have backed police programs on the small screen, almost as if Lee is channeling the classic work of Rhythm Heritage for SWAT, then taking things in a whole new direction! The "symphony" in the group's name is very well put, as there's soaring strings on many numbers – an even fuller feel than on some of Dave's other projects, but with equally tight grooves at the core. Part 2 includes "The Philly Avengers", "AC Express", "The Mystery, The Moment", "It's Got To Be Love", "Music For Your Pleasure" and "Losing My Mind At The Disco". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KRS-OneReturn Of The Boom Bap (blue & yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Jive/Get On Down, 1993. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first solo set by KRS-One on his own – maybe a bit of a surprise, given that he was really the driving force and main voice of Boogie Down Productions after the first album – yet one that also gives him a chance to spotlight some new wisdom and a growing sense of identity! The set has KRS working with some great producers – DJ Premier, Showbiz, and Kid Capri – while also doing plenty of production on his own – all at a level that seems to only intensify the sound and increase the sense of urgency in his music! That quality really comes through on the timeless cut "Sound Of The Police" – maybe even more powerful now than when it was recorded – next to other classics that include "Outta Here", "I Can't Wake Up", "Black Cop", "Stop Frontin'", "Uh Oh", "Hip Hop Vs Rap", "Brown Skin Woman", and "Return Of The Boom Bap". ✨✧ DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson2+ ... LP
Hot Casa (France), 2022. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A set that's as warm and sunny as the image on the cover – one that continues the mix of global elements and contemporary production from this very hip team! There's a vibe here that's almost like some of the Africanism tracks from the French scene in years back – that is, with more of a contemporary vibe overall, and plenty of sweet beats and keyboards – moving past familiar house with a style that's more lean, and which makes just the right use of all the elements that DjDj and LtN want to throw into the mix! Vocals are in French, and as warmly soulful as the music – on titles that include "Ping Pong", "Bola Mba", "Rai Publique", "Pas Si Vite", "Clic", "The A La Menthe", "Caipirinha", "Planete", "Police", "Continent De Joie", and "Coeur Breton". ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeMilano Odia – La Polizia Non Puo Sparare (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
GDM (Italy), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautifully sensitive Italian police soundtrack from the 70s – one scored by Ennio Morricone with a bit less of the funky bits of other cop scores of the time, and a nice mix of sad-tinged, personal styles! There's a fair bit of key Morricone touches here that resonate with his best other work of the time – spacious, almost stepping rhythms; dramatic isolated instrumentation, including a bit of off-key piano; and some warmer tones that soften some of the best moments, and keep them from being too cold or dark. The drama here is subtle, but effective – and the score's a real lost gem in the catalog of the maestro deserving wider attention! Titles include "Rapimento", "Raptus Omicida", "Milano Odia La Polizi Non Puo Sparare", and "I Conti Ora Tornano". First-ever full issue of the score – as only a few cuts were only ever issued before on a single! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tubeway Army (Gary Numan)Tubeway Army (marbled blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beggars Banquet, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The genius first album from Gary Numan and Tubeway Army – a set that stripped down all sorts of influences from the early part of the 70s, filtered them through a punkish sort of energy, and came up with a great antidote to some of the more overblown projects from years before! There's plenty to love here if you love Bowie in Berlin, or the offbeat spirit of Roxy Music – yet the record's far more than just a second chapter to that generation – as Numan and the group have a way of sounding colder and more sinister, and really helping give birth to a spirit that so many others would steal in years to come! If you only know Numan's later solo work, you'll be nicely surprised here by the sharper edge and sometimes heavier guitar – an instrument played along with keyboards by Numan, with help from Jess Lidyard on drums and Paul Gardiner on bass. Numan produced the whole thing himself, with further genius energy in the studio – and titles include "Are You Real", "Listen To The Sirens", "Everyday I Die", "The Life Machine", "Shadow In Vain", "Jo The Water", and "The Dream Police". ✨✧ VariousLondon Is The Place For Me Vol 5 – Latin, Jazz, Calypso, & Highlife From Young Black London ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
London's always been one of the hippest cities in the world – but back during the postwar years, there was an especially wonderful outpouring of music on the scene – a rich array of new sounds and styles pulled from around the globe – as so many residents from crumbling British empire came to live in the UK! Musicians and listeners arrived in London with plenty of cultural baggage on hand – influences from the Caribbean, West Africa, and India too – plus other smaller scenes that once fell under the British banner, all now the fuel for the cultural fire that was happening in England! The title here tells plenty about the music being made in this newly-formed scene – bits of African highlife, Jamaican calypso, American jazz, Cuban Latin, and more – all filtered into the modernism of the 50s, and given a new twist that was decidedly urban as well. The package may well be the most impressive so far in this legendary series – and is certainly the one that moves the farthest past any sort of easy expectations or cultural conventions. Titles include "Women Police In England" by Mighty Terror, "My Sorrow" by West African Swing Stars, "Cricket Umpires" by Lord Kitchener, "Jordhu" by Caribbean Swing Band, "Trumpet Highlife" by Shake Keane, "Calypso Mambo" by George Browne, "Cuban Nightingale" by Buddy Pipp's Highlifers, "Kitch" by The Quavers, "Tabu" by Mona Baptiste, and "King Jimmy Foo Foo" by Tejan Sie with The West African Rhythm Brothers. Guido & Maurizio De AngelisLa Polizia Incrimina La Legge Assolve (aka High Crime) (red & black vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
One of the first great Italian cop movies of the 70s – and a superbly-scored film with a really wonderful soundtrack! The DeAngelis brothers are clearly drawing heavily from an American tradition initiated by Lalo Schfrin – using heavy guitar, funky undercurrents, and even some soulfully righteous touches to really set this one apart from other Italian films of the time. Yet the approach here is also a bit more different, touches with some of the darker modes and more redemptive themes of Italian westerns – a sense of suspension and drama that's incredibly powerful, and heard to best effect on the solo instrumental passages – which include guitar by Maurizio and flute by Guido. Titles include "Festa A Genova", "Gangster Story", "Chicca", "The Life Of A Policeman", "Il Libanese", "Casa Di Moda", "Rock Al Porto", and "La Storia Comincia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousFunky Chimes – Belgian Grooves From The 70s – Part 2 ... LP
Sdban (Belgium), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Funk from Belgium? Believe it or not, stranger things have happened – and we can promise that if you played these tracks back to back with more familiar grooves from other 70s sources, you'd quickly find that these Belgian grooves are right up there with the best of the bunch! The set's maybe a more sophisticated follow-up to the excellent Funky Chicken collection, which documented some grittier Belgian 70s material a few years back – and this one shows off a wickedly sharp batch of tunes that include funky fusion, sweet sound library numbers, and lots of really inventive cuts that are plenty funk, but often take some great chances too – in ways that almost make us think that the nation's scene was so small that musicians from different genres were often hanging out together, and breaking down lots of musical boundaries in the process! As with the other set, the presentation here is wonderful – not just fantastic music we'd never have discovered otherwise, but also very detailed notes and an overall punch that few other funky compilations can match. Titles on this second vinyl volume include "Guess We'd Better Break Up Now" by Etta Cameron, "Give It Up Or Turn It A Loose" by Philip Catherine, "Riff For Peggy" by Roland Thyssen, "We Love The Policemen" by Hearts Of Soul & Shampoo, "Smoke Signal" by Indian Sound Of Blackfoot, "Inner City Blues" by Leslie Kent, "Chewing Gum Delirium" by Free Pop Electronic Concept, "Akkerwinde" by Lieven, "Concerto For Right Foot & Orchestra" by George Hayes & His Philarpopic Orchestra, "Punktowiec" by Skleroptak, and "Soul Melody" by R Dero.
