✨✧ Simon & Garfunkel/Dave GrusinGraduate – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Columbia, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous little soundtrack – even if you've seen it a million times! Simon & Garfunkel always had a really dark quality to their music, but it never seemed to show as much on the pop charts as it did when used brilliantly by Mike Nichols in this important film. Their tunes emerge in slightly different versions, with a style that's a bit more adult and more off-center than we remember – all sitting next to some groovy instrumental tunes score by a young Dave Grusin, and shifting the mood nicely from track to track. Titles include "Whew", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "The Singleman Party Foxtrot", "April Come She Will", "On The Strip", "The Folks", "Mrs Robinson", and "Sounds Of Silence". CD

✨✧ Earl KlughFinger Paintings (original master recording) ... CD
Blue Note/Mobile Fidelity, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real breakout album for Earl Klugh – the kind of record that got him on the a-list of fusion players for the rest of the 70s! The title here is especially well-chosen – as the tunes have a gently colorful feel that's never too slick, despite the tighter setting of the album – with light arrangements by Dave Grusin that still leave Earl plenty of space to work his subtle magic on the strings of the guitar. Titles include "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow", "Summer Song", "Dance With Me", "Dr Macumba", "Long Ago & Far Away", and "Cabo Frio". CD
(Out of print, gold CD pressing on Mobile Fidelity!)

✨✧ Quincy JonesYou've Got It Bad Girl ... CD
A&M/Verve, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet funky Q for the 70s – easily one of the coolest albums ever from Quincy Jones! The album's got a very heavy electric vibe – one that's kind of a laidback take on the styles that Jones was forging in some of his 70s soundtrack work – served up with massive work on the keyboards from Dave Grusin and Bob James, the latter of whom brings some of his own CTI vibe strongly into play! The basslines are great too – often dipping, stepping, and turning wonderfully – keeping things laidback and mellow, but always making for some sort of a groove, even on the slower tracks too. There's just a bit of vocals on the record – handled by Valerie Simpson on two tracks, and Quincy on another – but the main focus here is on the instrumentation, which is completely sublime. Titles include Quincy's great remake of "Summer In The City", an oft-sought sample track – plus versions of "Superstition", "Daydreaming", and "You've Got It Bad Girl" – and the great originals "Chump Change", "Love Theme From The Getaway", "Eyes Of Love", and "Sanford & Son Theme". CD
(2009 digipak pressing.)

✨✧ Andy Williams with Quincy JonesMademoiselle De Paris (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
SSJ (Japan), 1960/1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
Really great material from Andy Williams – some of the grooviest sounds we've ever heard from the singer, thanks to backings from Quincy Jones! The set features live sides cut for the Let's Go To Town show issued for radio by the National Guard – and the album's got a similar feel to the great Williams/Jones album on Cadence from the same time, but with a vibe that's even more jazz-based overall! Andy's a hell of a singer in the right setting – and this album's even more sublime than his studio album with Quincy – as it offers up a fair bit of instrumental tracks from Jones' great ensemble of the time, which means even more great work on some of the solo passages. Dave Grusin plays piano on a few tracks, too – and titles include "Pleasingly Plump", "Gwan Train", "Boum", "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set", "Domino", "Air Mail Special", "Lester Leaps In", "Mademoiselle De Paris", and "Clap Yo Hands/I Won't Dance". CD

✨✧ Beaver & KrauseIn A Wild Sanctuary ... CD
Reprise/Collectors Choice, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best records ever from Beaver and Krause – largely because there's not so much noodling! This one features the pair on moog and organ, with help from Dave Grusin on piano, Milt Holland on percussion, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Bud Shank on reeds. The sound isn't jazz at all – but more a mix of spacey grooves and bubbling bits, with much more of a song-like structure than on other records. There's a few nice cuts here that almost hit a groove, and even when they don't, they still have a nice stripped down moogy sound that's very pleasing. Titles include "Spaced", "Salute To The Vanishing Bald Eagle", "People's Park", "Walking Green Algae Blues", and "Another Part Of Time". CD

✨✧ Lee RitenourOn The Line ... CD
Elektra/JVC (Japan), 1982/1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
On The Line has a style that's a bit keyboard-heavy – in a way that seems to borrow from some of the 80s soundtrack work of the time, and which is clearly a nod to the success of the Lyle Mays/Pat Metheny sound that was breaking big on ECM. The move is a nice one for Lee on the best cuts – those that underplay the cheesier aspects of the style – and other players on the album are a batch of likely suspects that include Harvey Mason, Dave Grusin, Ernie Watts, and Steve Forman. Titles include "The Rit Variations", "Dolphin Dreams", "California Roll", "On The Line", "Tush", and "Heavenly Bodies". CD
Also available On The Line (Japanese pressing) ... LP 6.99
