new Dexter Gordon — Power! (Tower Of Power!/More Power!) ... LP
Prestige, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold .... $4.99
Dexter Gordon certainly was a tower of power by this point – as his lengthy 60s stay in Europe helped him to work work work, and season his playing considerably – to a point at which he emerged as a masterful soloist far beyond the limits of his early bop recordings! This session features Dexter back with an American group – one that features Barry Harris on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Tootie Heath on drums – plus a very welcome James Moody on tenor on one track, "Monmartre", blowing in that raspier tone of the late 60s we love so much! Other titles include "Stanley The Steamer", "The Rainbow People", "Those Were The Days", "Fried Bananas", "Boston Bernie", and "Sticky Wicket", "Lady Bird", and "Meditation"all nice and long!
(Cover has some wear, with some staining along the bottom.)

Tower Of Power — In The Slot ... LP
Warner, 1975. Very Good- .... $7.99
The groove's getting a bit smoother than on some of the group's early funk classics, but T of P still come across quite well on the set – working in their trademark blend of jazz, funk, and soul. Arrangements are by funky keyboardist Charles Thompson and trumpeter Greg Adams – and tracks include "The Soul Of A Child", "Ebony Jam", "Just Enough And Too Much", "Treat Me Like Your Man", and "On The Serious Side".
(Cover has some wear, a cutout notch, and two bent corners.)

new Tower Of Power — Tower Of Power ... LP
Warner, 1973. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the harder funk albums by Tower Of Power – done with a hard-driving horn-heavy groove, slathered up in East Bay Grease! The group's got a bit of the stoner funk sound that shows their Bay Area roots, but they're also a lot tighter than most of their California contemporaries, and feel more like some of the groups coming out of Memphis and Muscle Shoals at the same time. Lenny Williams is on lead vocals, Chester Thompson plays organ – and tracks include "Soul Vaccination", "What Is Hip", "So Very Hard To Go", "Just Another Day", "Clean Slate", "Get Yo' Feet Back On The Ground", and "Clever Girl".
(Cover has some wear, a bent corner, and a small split on the bottom seam.)

Arrows/Sunrays/Somebody's Chyldren/Davy Jones — Hellcats – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Tower/Reel Time (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $16.99
This one's got it all – fuzzy instrumentals, sweet harmonies, and some nice trippy parts too – all wrapped up in a set that's easily one of the best Tower Records rock soundtracks of the 60s! Most of the schlocky biker soundtracks from the time are already pretty darn great – but this one's even a cut above – put together with a special quality that's always made us dig this one the most! The album features a great cut called "Hellcats" – a harmony rocker by The Sunrays, and just as great as their own album tracks. The set also features an instrumental "Hellcats" and "The Angry Mob" by The Arrows – plus psych oriented tracks by Davy Jones & The Dolphins, including "The Only Way To Fly", "Mass Confusion", and "Let's Live A Little" – and "I'm Up" and "The Marionettes" by Somebody's Chyldren.

Ketty Lester — When A Woman Loves A Man ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. Very Good- .... $1.99
Some very nice pop soul tracks by this lovely vocalist from the 60s! The record features a core group of backing by the Ronnie Brown trio, plus some larger arrangements by Lincoln Mayorga. The sound is nice and soulful, with a bit of a jazzy touch – in the manner of some of Nancy Wilson's work at Capitol. Includes a cover of Percy Sledge's big hit, with the gender reversed as in the title, plus the tracks "It Hurts So Bad", "Nice & Easy", "Are You Ready For A Woman", and "Till The End Of Time".
(Cover has some wear, a stained corner, staining along the bottom, and paper stuck on the back along the bottom.)

MDLT Willis — What's Your Game?/Runnin' & Pushin ... 7-inch
Ivory Tower, 1974. Good .... $9.99
Nice obscure one by this lost girl soul group from the 70's! The Jackson 5 wrote and produced "What's Your Game", and it's got a very tight mellow 70's soul groove, with almost a Curtom sound, and a feel that's surprisingly deep for The Jacksons at the time. Gene Page arranged the flip side, and it's also got a nice 70's feel, in keeping with his strongest work from the time.

Ray Terrace — Home Of Boogaloo ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A fantastic record, and one of our most treasured Latin Soul albums from the late 60s! Ray Terrace leads a totally sharp little Latin combo through a host of originals and soulful covers, and the real highlight of the record is Willie Torres, who sings English vocals in a very deep soulful style that groovers perfectly with Ray's tight arrangements. The whole thing swings, and there's never a dead minute. We love this one all the way through – and it's a treasure to finally see reissued on vinyl! Tracks include "You've Been Talking 'Bout Me Baby", "Half Way Down", "Listen To Me", the totally great "I Make A Fool Of Myself", "Wade In The Water", "Get On Up", "Wiggle, Waggle", "There Is A Mountain" and more. Nice!

new Laurindo Almeida — Acapulco '22 ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent work from Laurindo – a truly wonderful album, played with small combo backing, which gives the set a jazzier feel than usual! Players include Jimmy Rowles on organ, Bob Cooper on tenor, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Shelly Manne, Milt Holland, and Chico Guerro on percussion – and although there's no credits for the arrangements on the album, the overall feel is similar to Roberts best work for Capitol, especially because Rowles' work on organ gives the record such a groovy sound! Titles include "Acapulco 1922", "Misirlou", "Satin Doll", "More", "Till Then", "What Kind Of Fool Am I", and "Desafinado".
(Cover has light wear & aging.)

new Walker Brothers (John Stewart & Scott Engel) — I Only Came To Dance With You ... LP
Tower, Early/Mid 60s. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Billed as "The Original Walker Brothers" on the cover, this one features tracks that Scott cut in the US with John Stewart, in the years before he moved to England and became super-huge stars. The tracks have less of that "wall of sound" style than their later work, and more of a rock n roll type groove. Titles include "Greens", "Diskoteque", "Without Your Love", "Wallflower", "Ham Hocks", "Chick's Choice", and "Swingin At The Batcave".

new Dick Curless — Long Lonesome Road (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tower/Omni (Australia), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $11.99 18.98 Out Of Stock
Baritone country vocal badassery from The Baron – the great Dick Curless's excellent, perhaps career best Long Lonesome Road album from 1968 – loaded up here with 19 bonus tracks that extend the sound and style really well! Curless may be best remembered for his trucker songs, but he covered the stylistic breadth of honky tonk subject matter as well as any of the other rough hewn country heroes of his day. The deep, weighty vocal style is paired well with the sad, mournful songs, but he does it with such style and charisma that it's never a downer. The way he holds a note with that voice at the end of a line, eeking every bit of emotion possible from the words is incredible – and the songs here are up there up the best he ever recorded. 29 tracks in all: "You Can't Go Back Again", "Bury The Bottle With Me", "A Tombstone Every Mile", "The Heartline Special", "Highway Man", "When Dad Was Around", "End Of The Road", "I Ain't Got Nobody", "Woman Don't Try To Sing My Song", "Been There People", "Just For The Record" and many more.

Blockhead — Interludes After Midnight (with download) ... LP
Ninja Tune, 2012. New Copy 2LP .... $18.99 19.99
Nocturnal boombap from Blockhead – a sleepless, samples and electic-beats heavy survey of an after hours metropolis – finding Blockhead as insistently inventive and timeless in approach as ever! We love that Blockhead's work kind of exists in it's own world, yet clearly shows love for NYC life – and the globally diverse soundscapes strongly represent both that great urban landscape and Blockheads inner genius. Includes "Never Forget Your Token", "Creeps Crouchin", "Panic In Funkytown", "Meet You At Tower Records", "Escape The Meadow", "Smoke Signals", "Midnight Blue", "Snapping Point", "Beyond Reach" feat Baby Dayliner and "The Robin Byrd Era".

Tony Bruno — Hell's Angels '69 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Capitol/Reel Time, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $16.99
An excellent biker soundtrack – very different than the usual bag! For this one, Tony Bruno has come up with some great instrumentals – many of them jazzier than you'd think, and a few with some nice funky Capitol instrumental touches – not so much studio fuzz guitar, as they are groovy numbers that are a lot less hairy than the guys on screen in the movie! The change is a nice one – not as rockish as the regular biker soundtrack – although there are some vocal numbers too, done in the Tower/Sidewalk sort of style. Yet it's the instrumentals that really send us – and which make this album well worth seeking out! Titles include "Chase Of Death", "Goofin", "Bass Lake Run", "Hang On Tight", and "Al and Alice".

Kim Fowley — Wildfire – The Complete Imperial Recordings (Outrageous/Born To Be Wild/Good Clean Fun) ... CD
Imperial/Tune In (UK), 1968/1969. New Copy 2 CDs .... $18.99
A trio of amazing albums – all of which really live up to the legend of Kim Fowley! First up is the well-titled Outrageous – one of the wildest albums ever from LA scenester Fowley – done in a very weird, very messed-up style that sort of sounds like The Stooges meet The Modern Lovers meet Alice Cooper! Fowley's fantastic on vocals – which are sort of of screeched and screamed, with revolutionary Riot On Sunset Strip-type lyrics, fused with a bit of Jim Morrison stoner spiritualism – a lot more compelling than you'd expect, and really mindblowing all the way through! The album's a perfect illustration of the genius that made Kim legendary, even when he wasn't having much of an impact on the mainstream – and titles include the incredible "Animal Man", plus "Hide & Seek", "Chinese Water Torture", "Bubble Gum", "Inner Space Discovery", and "Caught In The Middle". Next is Born To Be Wild – mindblowing organ work from the mighty Kim Fowley – a rare instrumental set that has Kim carving out amazing sounds on the organ that really match is vocal force on other records of the time! The set's a bit more soulful than usual for Fowley – a record that almost pushes a soul instrumental sound more strongly than Kim's usual Sunset Strip sleaze – although there is a nice fuzzy undercurrent to the record at times too! The set burns like some lost Tower Records soundtrack – and titles include "Born To Be Wild", "Soul Limbo", "Space Odyssey", "I Can't Stop Dancing", "Savage In The Sun", "Fresno1963", and "Pictures of Matchstick Men". Good Clean Fun is filled with awesome work from madman Kim Fowley – an album that offers hard rockers, some nice groovers, and even some trippier tracks that feature spoken or performed bits! The record's got a really wonderful approach that's a look at the lost genius of the LA scene of the late 60s – emphasized by an appearance on the record by Rodney Bingeheimer, the mayor of Sunset Strip, plus work by Motorcycle John and the Frog Prince! If you've ever heard about Fowley, but never found the record to truly convey his insanity on record, this is the one to check out – as it's as brilliant as it is insane! Titles include "Energy", "Baby Rocked Her Dolly", "Motorcycle", "One Man Band", "Good Clean Fun", "Search For A Teenage Woman", "I'm Not Young Anymore", "Lights The Blind & Lame Can See", and "Kangaroo".

Harley Hatcher — Wild Wheels ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good+ .... $3.99
A weird batch of folksy rock tunes – composed and produced by Harley Hatcher for Sidewalk Enterprises, and sounding a lot more like a Sidewalk or Tower soundtrack than something on RCA. The groups are the usual obscurities that would show up on a Mike Curb soundtrack – pictured on the back cover, but still leaving us to wonder if they really existed at all. Tracks include "Holiday Rider" by The Saturday Revue, "Jailer Let Me Go Home" and "A Hurt In My Heart" by Don Epperson, "Playin Hard To Get" by Billie & Blue, and "Wine Women & Song" by Terry Stafford.
(Cover has some wear, with partially split top and bottom seams.)

Ben E King — I Had A Love ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1976. New Copy .... $15.99
A great one from Ben E King's "Supernatural" comeback years in the mid 70s – recorded at Sigma Sound with a really stellar approach on both the groovers and the mellow tunes! Ben's really letting his vocals open up on the set – going for that richness that was sometimes held back in the more uptown arrangements of the 60s, but which really flowers here in a fuller, richer, smooth soul mode. Arrangements are by Norman Harris, Bert De Coteaux, Ron Kersey, and Ron Baker – and the album's a great example of how the Sigma approach could take a great singer and make them even better! Titles include the Sam Dees tracks "I Betcha Didn't Know That", "Standing In The Wings Of Heartache", "No Danger Ahead", and "Tower Of Strength" – plus a great cover of Ashford & Simpson's "I Had A Love", and the cuts "Smooth Sailing", "We Got Love", and "Everybody Plays The Fool".

Truly, truly one of the most essential reggae albums of all time, and without a doubt one of our top dub albums. Lou Rawls/Don Costa — Soul Of N*gger Charley ... LP
MGM, 1973. Very Good+ .... $36.99
A great little soundtrack – even if it looks a bit snoozy from the outside! Don Costa's usually not our favorite arranger, but he does a great job with this one – laying out some hard blacksploitation grooves that have funky keyboards, sweet sitar, and lots of nice cop show grooves to them. The bulk of the record is instrumental – with some great funky cuts like "Main Title – Charley", "Main Theme to Water Tower", "Can You Dig It?", and "Train's Comin" – plus a few more "with chorus" tracks that are a bit more mellow. Lou Rawls sings on two cuts – the groovy "Sometime Day", which has a very strong "soundtrack theme" feel, and the mellower "Morning Comes Around", which ends the record with a nice soulful tone.

Alexander Von Schlippenbach — Living Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
FMP/Cien Fuegos (Austria), 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $29.99
A landmark in the European avant scene of the 60s – the first self-released album by pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach – an all star session that features work by Peter Brotzmann, Manfred Schoof, Paul Rutherford, Han Bennink, and others! The work here is very free and a spacious – with slow-building, tentative rumblings from all players involved, gently feeling out the space between them as the set goes on – energy levels increasing with confidence as tighter and stronger movements emerge. Titles include "The Living Music", "Into The Staggerin", "Tower", "Wave", "Past Time", and "Lollopalooza". Greatness!

Chester Thompson — Powerhouse ... CD
Black Jazz/Snow Dog (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $13.99 18.99
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with labelmate Rudolph Johnson on tenor, blowing some beautiful lines alongside long, drawn-out Hammond solos from Thompson! The overall feel is similar to some of the great late 60s Prestige sessions – especially Don Patterson dates – with the group free swinging away in a very live format, just like you might have heard if you caught them in some hip southside club. Other players include Al Hall Jr on trombone and Ray Pounds on drums – and the album features four long jamming tracks, with titles that include "Mr T", "Trip One", "Weird Harold", and "Powerhouse".

Cherry Red (UK), Early 80s. New Copy .... $8.99
A really wonderful compilation of rare material from the early days of Cherry Red Records – that great British label who brought some incredibly sweet pop into an otherwise dark post-punk world! The set's especially nice for its wealth of material by Everything But The Girl and solo members Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn – as nearly a third of the set is material by various combinations of the above. Includes "Can't", "Tower Of Silence", and "Aubade" by Ben Watt; "Goodbye Joe" by Tracey Thorn; and "Feeling Dizzy" and "On My Mind" by Everything But The Girl. Also includes "My Brilliant Career", "Son Of God's Mate", and "Inside Out" by The Nightingales; "If She Doesn't Smile" and "Thousand Guitars Of St Dominiques" by Fantastic Something; "4 Countries" and "The Coroner & The Inquest" by The Reflections; "This Is For The Moment", "Think", "Rushes", and "The Trial" by Five Or Six; and "The Bridge" by The Monochrome Set.

Another Santana LP you'll probably be embarrassed to admit you own because it's such a hackneyed classic rock relic, but we won't tell on you, because it's also a great batch of Latin rock numbers with more than a shade of funk and jazz inflection underneath the pyrotechnic guitar solos. Brilliant work from Thievery Corporation! This duo truly seems to be getting better and better as the years go by, progressing to deeper realms in both tone and craft – and somehow doing that while pulling us in with immediate, insistent appeal. That's no small feat! Tripped out jazzy hip hop soundscapes, straighter trance-y sounds, hard hitting funk and all around sonic adventurousness. We've always appreciated these guys, but we've grown to really love 'em! new Townes Van Zandt — Sunshine Boy – The Unheard Studio Sessions & Demos 1971 to 1972 ... CD
Omnivore, 1971/1972. New Copy 2CDs .... $22.99 24.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful 2CD set of long buried Townes Van Zandt recordings from the early 70s – a period that you can easily argue was his peak – even though few people were buying his records at the time! You get a pretty solid representation of 2 sides of the Townes sound on this great compilation from Omnivore. Disc One features alternate studio versions of some of our favorite songs – a good deal of which were produced by Cowboy Jack Clement at his Nashville studio in 1972 – plus a handful that Townes recorded in LA a year earlier. These have a sound that are fleshed out enough instrumentally, but without the horns, strings and some of the other grander aspects of the officially released album versions in hopes of breaking Townes through to a larger audience at the time. Ironically, it's the rawness and intimacy that Townes fans are drawn to – and that's what you get here! The second disc features demos that mostly feature just Townes's voice and acoustic guitar – and it's achingly beautiful! Despite the familiar track list, every song on this 2CD set is previously unreleased – and essential for longtime Townes fans and newbies alike! Includes "T For Texas", "Who Do You Love", "Sunshine Boy", "Pancho & Lefty" (an alternate 1972 mix without strings and horns), "Sad Cinderella", "Lungs", "Mr. Mudd & Mr. Gold", "White Freight Liner Blues", "Two Hands" and more on the studio sessions disc – and the titles on the disc of demos includes "Heavenly Houseboat Blues", "Diamond Heel Blues", "Tower Song", "Hightway Kind", "Old Paint", "Standin'" and more. 28 tracks in all – and it features some excellent notes by Colin Escott.

WEA (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A selection of Warner Brothers-related funk – but featuring some killer numbers that move way past the hits! This is one of the funkiest compilations we've ever heard from a major label – and it's proof that deep down in their catalogs, the majors were working just as hard as the indies to come up with some killer slabs of funk, as you'll hear in this set of 20 gems recorded between the years 1968 and 1974! Many of these numbers were only issued on 45s – or on long out of print LPs – and even though there's a few numbers on here that you may know, the set's also got a number of others that you probably don't, as it even surprised us with some of its funky goodies! Titles include "Getting Uptown" by United 8, "Don't Come Around Here Anymore" by Mark Putney, "Shop Talk (version 1)" by Cold Blood, "Come Little Children" by Donny Hathaway, "Sexy Coffee Pot" by Tony Alvon & The Belairs, "Soul Machine" by The Meters, "Pop Popcorn Children" by Eldridge Holmes, "What So Never the Dance (parts 1 & 2)" by The Houseguests, "Back On The Streets Again" by Tower Of Power, "65 Bars & A Taste Of Soul" by Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, "Nobody But You Babe" by Clarence Reid, and "You Gotta Know Whatcha Doin" by Charles Wright.

new Various — Titan – It's All Pop ... CD
Titan/Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2CDS .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from the Kansas City scene of the late 70s – a wealth of power pop work from the tiny Titan label – all brought together in one of the most brilliant packages we've ever seen from the Numero Group! Like most Numero releases, there's a great story behind this set – a tale of bounced checks, interstate culture, and a cadre of great groups who would have been huge – had they recorded this music out on the coast! Titan's way more than just a tiny label that managed to put out some killer singles back in the day – it's a pop powerhouse that shows just how much under-discovered genius the American scene can hold – music that really helps break down simple understandings of late 70s rock, especially when presented this well. The 2CD set features 42 tracks and a 40 page booklet – a great counterpart to Numero's Yellow Pills set – filled with notes on Titan, a complete discography, and a wealth of wonderful photos that really make this unique scene come alive. Titles include "Shark" and "Real Life Saver" by Gary Charlson, "No Way Baby" and "I Wanna Be" by Arlis, "It's Your Heart Tonight" and "Radio Heart" by Secrets, "Please Change Your Mind" and "Baby It's You" by Boys, "Rock N Roll Song" and "Radio City" by Bobby Sky, "The Last Song" by JP McClain & The Intruders, "Cry" and "Didn't Like It Anyway" by Gems, "Coit Tower" and "Drink A Toast" by Millionaire At Midnight, and "I Think About You" by Scott McCarl.

new Various — Blow Up – All That Brass Rock ... CD
Sony (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $29.99 Out Of Stock
A great idea for a compilation – a really cool set that focuses on the best days when jazz and rock were really combined together – that stretch in the late 60s and early 70s when horns were equally blended with guitars, in a groove that was plenty powerful overall! Some of the numbers here are familiar giants of the genres, and others are a bit surprising – and together, the music really does a great job tracing this evolving trend through its growth in the 70s! Titles include "Killing Floor" by Electric Flag, "Get It On" by Chase, "What Is Hip" by Tower Of Power, "Hold On" by Memphis Horns, "Mercy Mercy Mercy" by The Buckinghams, "Gonna Fly Now" by Maynard Ferguson, "Some Skunk Funk" by Brecker Brothers, "Vehicle" by Ides Of March, "In The Stone" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Non Pacem" by Azteca, "Goldmine" by Sons Of Champlin, and "New York" by Dreams.

Alan Bown — Outward Bown ... CD
Decca/Grapefruit (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99
Possibly the rarest album by UK outfit pf Alan Bown! The group is named for founder, trumpet and flugelhorn player, and they got around bit earlier in an R&B-styled mode, then billed as The Alan Bown Set. Starting with this cool record, they committed to more of a psychedelic pop mode. That serves them well! The tunes are infectious, skewing the the accessible side of the psych sound. The drums hit hard and there's both punchy electric and chiming acoustic elements – usually with groovy organ and huge melodies. Outward Bown has never had much luck in the market place, and this 2CD UK edition aims to remedy that – with the full stereo version plus the bonus track "Little Lesley" on disc one, plus the full mono version with a few additional bonus tracks on disc two. Includes "Toyland", "Mutiny", "Sally Green", "Love Is A Beautiful Thing", "Violin Shop", "You're Not In My Class", "Technicolor Dream", one of the most unique covers of "All Along The Watchtower", "My Girl Of The Month May" and more.

Bee Gees — Idea ... LP
Atco, 1968. Very Good+ .... $5.99
Things are getting slightly more complicated for the Bee Gees here – but we mean that in a good way! The vocals are superb – soaring forth with this unique sort of majesty, and light years away from their 70s disco pop styles – and the backings are a strange mix of rootsy and orchestral – making for a very odd juxtaposition that really seems to push the whole thing forward brilliantly! There's nobody else like the Bee Gees at this point in their career – a possible acquired taste, but one that's got you hooked once you get it! Titles include "When The Swallows Fly", "In The Summer Of His Years", "Indian Gin And Whiskey Dry", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "Kilburn Towers", and "I Started A Joke".
(Yellow label pressing. Cover has splitting on the bottom seam & a price in marker.)

A deeply effective set from Bonobo! new Jimi Hendrix Experience — Electric Ladyland ... CD
MCA/Experience Hendrix, 1968. Used .... $6.99
A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to comeout in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you had to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all fell just right, and the Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. Willie HightowerWillie Hightower ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $9.99
Seminal southern soul from the great Willie Hightower – a singer we'd rank right up there with Otis Redding, Al Green, and James Carr! Willie's got an incredible voice that grabs you right away – earthy and honest, yet also extremely well controlled – almost a down home take on the sound of some of the smoother soul singers of the 60s – in a manner that reminds us a bit of Garnett Mimms, and which really stands apart from other vocalists of the time. The 18 tracks on this set represent Willie at his best – and the collection features material recorded for producer Bobby Robinson (issued on both the Capitol and Enjoy labels), and Muscle Shoals maestro Rick Hall – brought together with beautiful fidelity, in a package that finally gives Willie his due, and which will hopefully get his name out there with the rest of his lendary contemporaries! Titles include "Walk A Mile In My Shoes", "You Used Me", "Back Road Into Town", "Nobody But You", "I Love You", "Poor Man", "Let's Walk Together", "Somebody Have Mercy", "You Are Mine", "It's A Miracle", and "Ooh Baby How I Love You".

Clocktower, Mid/Late 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $12.99
Another massive Tubby dub collection, but you might never know it from the cheap looking cover. Mid to late 70s dub workouts of Striker Lee tracks cut by the mighty Aggrovators, some with radical dub effects and one drops, others with a nice and subtle touch flavoring the mix. 14 tracks: "Bondage Dub", "Irce Man Dub", "Spliff Dub", "Babylon Dub", "Giveaway Love Dub", "African Congo Dub", "Ready Out Dub", "African Tribal Dub", "Winds Of Dub", "Forgive & Forget Dub", "Strong Love Dub", "Me Lover Gone Dub", "Wicked Man Dub" and "Out Of This World Dub".

King Tubby — King Tubby's Rastafari Dub ... LP
Clocktower, Mid/Late 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $12.99
A dozen Aggrovators jams from the golden age of Jamaican music, all with Tubby's expert knob twirling taking them into the next dimension. We aren't entirely certain, we'd hazard a guess that these are all Bunny Lee productions, filled out nicely with fat bass, crisp hi hats and a heavy thumping kick, punctuated nicely by dubby reverb and echoplex. With "King Of The Arena Dub", "No Partial Dub", "Crazy Baldhead Dub", "A Living Dub", "Destroy Dub Style", "Book Of Numbers Dub" and "Natty Roots Man Dub".

King Tubby — Rocker's Almighty Dub ... LP
Clocktower, Late 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $12.99
10 excellent roots rock rhythms given a nice dub treatment, and though we're selling this record as most shops do, as a King Tubby side, we'd be willing to wager he actually wasn't around his studio when this was mixed, and certainly wasn't around Joe Gibbs' or Bullwackies when the cuts included here from those spots were mixed. Still it's a great set of rhythms, all with excellent spaced out dub mixes, and burning performances at the hands of Sly & Robbie, Family Man, Bagga Morris, Santa Davis, Augustus Pablo and others. With "Rocker's Almighty Dub", "Dunza Dub", "Storm & Lightning", "Something Nice Bout Da Dub", "Upful & Positive Dread", "Hold this Dub" and "21 Gun Salute to Brother Marcus".

Clocktower, 1970s. New Copy 3 x 10" .... $32.99
Pivotal Black Ark material from Lee Perry – with brilliantly tripped out echoey dub production – and scorching instrumentation laid down by the mighty Upsetters! Split roughly in half between Perry's nicely gritty instrumental moodcraft and hazy vocals, this collection features some uber prime Upsetters material. It's all hear – heavily rumbling bass grooves, tripped out, though spiritually resonant vocals and just enough of smoky haze without getting too thick to breathe. Amazing stuff! Includes "Scratch The Dub Organizer", "Bush Weed Corn Trash", "When Jah Come", "Curley Dub", "Serious Joke", "Who You Gonna Run To" and "Tighten Up". This beautiful 10" box set edition is probably the nicest version we've ever seen – presenting the original 10 tracks laid out 2 per side – with 2 bonus tracks on Side B of record three: Susan Cadogan's "Do It Baby" and Scratch's own "Longer Way".

Electric 70s work from Lalo Schifrin – with a tight uptempo funky sound that's similar to his strong "cop show" soundtrack themes at the time. Not totally up there with Bullit or some of the 60s grooves, but nicer than you might think, and proof that he was still a player back in the day! Titles include "Eagles In Love", "Macumba", "Theme From Most Wanted", "Theme From King Kong", and "Roller Coaster".

Scientist works over some of the heftiest Aggrovator sides on this legendary set – one of favorite dub records, period! One particular standout is a great take on the "Drum Song" rhythm – but the whole set is inmpeccable! Other titles include "Taxi To Baltimore Dub", "Satta Dread Dub", "Every Dub Shall Scrub", "Blacka Shade Of Dub" and "Just Say Dub. . .Who". 10 tracks in all. This 3 X 10" box set version is very nicely done – with to 2 dubs per side – closing out with 2 bonus tracks: "Queen Of The Icotion" and "Party Time On The Enterprise".

Pioneering efforts in experimental music from Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez – provacative, influential 50s material from these towering figures compiled for this CD from El Records. Stockhausen's "Etude Concrete" and Nr 5 Zietmasse (Time-Measures) For Five Woodwinds kick it off, the former a blunt, statically missive, the latter a playfully tense piece. These are followed by Boulez Le Marteau Sans Maitre recordings from 1953-1955, 9 pieces in all, To close, Stockhausen's Klavierstuck XI pieces from 1956, with David Tudor on piano.

Yosuke Yamashita — Yosuke Alone ... CD
King (Japan), 1974. New Copy .... $22.99
Solo piano from one of Japan's most inventive talents on the keyboard – really stretching out here in a warmly acoustic setting, in a style that's quite freewheeling and open, yet without some of the more avant moments of later years too! There's a sense of balance here that's really beautiful – as Yosuke blocks out these bold shapes in sound – stacking them together as he builds the music into great towers of tone – seemingly random at points, yet always coming together with an inherent sense of order that leaves us breathless by the end! Tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Communication", "Paraphrase", "Flight From Autumn Leaves", and "Closing Theme".

Lonnie Youngblood — Psychedelic Experience – A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix ... CD
Essential, 2013. New Copy .... $14.99
A sweet tribute to Jimi Hendrix – served up by older soul legend Lonnie Youngblood – who actually recorded with Jimi in his early days! The set here is a very faithful presentation of the Hendrix aesthetic – maybe a bit more funk than rock, which is a good thing for us – and feeling a lot like some of the best underground Hendrix-inspired rock funk sets from the early 70s! All tracks have vocals, and plenty of guitar – maybe not as fuzzy or frenetic as Jimi's, but still pretty darn nice – and the rhythms and track selection definitely focus on the more soulful side of the Hendrix oeuvre, especially once the album gets going. Titles include "If Six Was Nine", "All Along The Watchtower", "Fire", "Foxy Lady", "Stone Free", "Red House", "Changing Lanes", "We Gotta Live Together", and even a version of "Star Spangled Banner".

Early harmonic blues, pulled from vintage 78rpm recordings, and wrapped up in a great Robert Crumb cover – exactly the kind of album that makes the Yazoo label so great! Most tracks here appear on LP for the first time ever – and the set does a wonderful job of digging through some very vivid uses of the instrument in 20s and 30s blues – work that's arguably every bit as complex, if not more so, than any of the harp bluesmen in later years. Titles include "My Driving Wheel" by Lee Brown, "Crazy About You" by State Street Boys, "Railroad Blues" by Freeman Stowers, "Friday Moan Blues" by Alfred Lewis, "Harmonica Rag" by Chuck Darling, "I Want You By My Side" by Jazz Gillum, and "House Snake Blues" by Chicken Wilson & Skeeter Hinton.

The lone early 70s masterpiece from Gary Higgins! Red Hash is monumental on a few fronts, one huge one being how far his influence reached despite the album spending so many years as a rarity, beloved by the relative few who've heard it. Seriously. . .we can think of a few icons of the indie folk 90s & 00s whose music simply would not exist if not for this record, but Red Hash is incredible on it's own terms. Other titles include "Taxi To Baltimore Dub", "Satta Dread Dub", "Every Dub Shall Scrub", "Blacka Shade Of Dub" and "Just Say Dub. . .Who". 10 tracks in all.

new Clark Terry — Happy Horns Of Clark Terry ... LP
Impulse, 1964. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great little album – one that really gets at the bright, joyous feel that Clark Terry brings to his music! Despite the "happy" in the title – which might make you think this one would be a bit silly – the album's a pretty great record! Terry plays both trumpet and flugelhorn (hence the "horns" in the title) – and he's working with a spare, tight, and surprisingly creative group that includes drummer Walter Perkins, bassist Milt Hinton, pianist Roger Kellaway, and the sax team of Phil Woods and Ben Webster. Tunes are light and playful, but never sloppy – instead quite inventive, and done in a way that's halfway between Terry's own late 50s work as a leader (as on Argo), and some of his work on sessions like Ed Thigpen's magnificent Out Of The Storm. Titles include "Jazz Conversations", "High Towers", "In A Mist", "Rockin In Rhythm", "Return To Swahili", and "Impulsive".
(Green label ABC/Impulse pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)

new Upsetters — Blackboard Jungle Dub (jungle cover version) ... LP
Clocktower, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
You could go 'round and 'round with music historians arguing whether or not this album, or Java Java Java or Aquarius Dub was the first full length dub LP, but it makes no difference to us, this is one mighty set of Perryisms, wrought in the pre-Black Ark era. There's a dozen of the Upsetter's finest rhythms rendered in dub versions here, and though he's uncredited on the sleeve, we've read that King Tubby was responsible for the wonderful reverb and mixing console action taking these tracks to the next level. Essential! Includes "Blackboard Jungle Dub (version 1)", "Rubba, Rubba Words", "Cloak A Dagger (version 3)", "Dreamland Dub", "Fever Grass Dub", "Sinsemilla Kaya Dub", "Moving Forward", "Kasha Macka Dub" and "Setta Iration Dub".

Ace (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock

new Bonobo — North Borders (7 X 10" box set) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... 12-inch
Ninja Tune, 2013. New Copy 7 x 10 " .... $62.99 Out Of Stock
A deeply effective set from Bonobo! North Borders has beats that are as compelling as any in Bonobo's canon – often thumping pretty hard – paired with gorgeous electronic sound washes and really deft use of vocal samples and guest singers. new Leonard Cohen — Songs Of Leonard Cohen ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Used .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
Leonard Cohen's debut for Columbia, one of the most astounding first albums if its era, and to this day a towering achievement in both songwriting and myth making! The production is that perfectly haunting mix of sparseness and grandeur, with Cohen's lyricism piercing and penetrating wonderfully – his voice never sounded better, and this is certainly one of the great "lightening in a bottle" efforts that was hard to top by Cohen or anyone else in the more poetic upper levels of pop music. Includes ""Suzanne", "Master Song", "Winter Lady", "The Stranger Song", "Sisters Of Mercy", "So Long, Marianne", "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye", "Stories Of The Street", "Teachers" and "One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong".
(70s pressing. Cover has some wear, a bit of pen on the front, and a couple of bits of stuck-on paper on the back.)

new Various — Gypsy Creams & Ginger Nuts – Sounds That Swept The Supermarkets ... CD
Rediffusion/RPM (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
If the supermarket still sounded this funky, they'd never have any trouble getting us to do the shopping – thanks to the wonderfully groovy sound library tunes served up on this CD! The collection's a great reminder of the days when Muzak could still sound plenty darn wonderful – an instrumental soundtrack to shopping that was very much in line with the best film and TV themes of the period – fuzzy guitar, burning Hammond, and more – all set to subtly funky rhythms that were more than enough to help keep the mood bright as the shoppers moved down the aisles with their carts! All tracks here are from the UK Rediffusion sound library – an under-tapped source of great bits that's similar to DeWolfe or KPM, but much less familiar. Most numbers are by the cream of the crop of the Brit Easy scene – and although most tracks are originals, there's also a few surprising covers too. Titles include "Take Eight" by Pete Moore, "The Cutter" by Vic Flick Sound, "Some Other Time" by Alan Moorehouse, "Hold Tight" by Howard Blaikley Orchestra, "Flash" by Val Merrall, "Next Of Kingsleigh" by Harry Stoneham, "Cat Walk" by Pete Moore, "Spoofin" by Tony Evans, "John & Paul" by Tony Osborne, "Cubanana" by Vic Flick Sound, "Friendship Train" by Rosetta Hightower, "Solar Wind" by Pete Moore, and "Soul In Space" by Harry Stoneham. 25 tracks in all – and great notes too!

new Macka Dub — Sound Of Macka Dub ... LP
Clocktower, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A tasty set of rootsy mid 70s rhythms, cut by the core of the Upsetters band, with Wire Lindo, Bobby Chung and Carlton and Family Man Barrett, alongside a host of other musicians. Though it's not credited as such, the set's supposedly cut at Tubby's and was mixed by one of his acolytes, Prince Phillip Smart, who approaches the mix with a very minimalist touch, not too much space dust sprinkled over the rhythms here, which is just the way we like it on this set, it lets the percolating funk bubble up from underneath without too much echo to get in the way! A heavy lesser known dub side that's one of our forgotten favorites! 11 tracks in all, including "Bradsta Dub", "Ista Episode", "Dub In My Soul", "KC Black", "Mike-O-Lette", "Capo Dub" and "Shotman Chow".
