King Sunny AdeSynchro System (Canadian pressing) ... LP
Island (Canada), 1983. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The second domestically released album from King Sunny Ade and His African Beats, with the wonderful Ju Ju sound ringing throughout every piece, from the up tempo numbers to the more mellow grooves. Interlocking, chirping guitar parts are layered over nicely percolating rhythms, 9 tracks in all: "Synchro Feelings – Hako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele" and "Synchro Reprise". LP, Vinyl record album

New Lou Champagne SystemNo Visible Means (180 gram white vinyl pressing – limited, numbered) ... LP
Pterodactyl/Medical, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
Nasty electro punk from the enigmatic Lou Champagne – an obscure early 80s effort issue on Lou's own record label, but a killer cooker that would have shook the New York scene up plenty – had Champagne been working in the Big Apple at the time! There's a dark blend of analogue electronics and punkish sensibilities that almost reminds us of Suicide at their best – and the album's certainly a great companion to their classic first album – although at points, Lou's handling of various waveforms is almost even more deft – creating a sinister sensibility that really makes this one hold up strongly over the years! Titles include "Do Something", "Machine Muzik", "Invisible Prisons", "Another Dimension", "Silent Walking", and "Broken Hearts". LP, Vinyl record album

Coolin SystemCoolin System ... CD
GED Soul, 2011. New Copy ... $6.99
Cool jazz funk from The Coolin' System – a group that lays out a funky backdrop, and one that actually generates plenty of heat despite the group's name! Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, bass, drums and percussion bring the funk, along with a vamping guitar – but what we love about this record is all the measured out space that the group provides from some really sweet solos all around. It adds a late 60s-styled jazz funk vibe that's not easy to pull off, but everyone in this group can play, and they make it seem easy. Players include Mikie Martel on trumpet & flugelhorn, JD Douglas on tenor sax and flute, Pablo Ahogado on Hammond and Rhodes, David Guy on bass, James Bonomo on drums and Andy Wilmoth on percussion. AJ Eason provides guest vocals on "I Need Some Money", but for the most part it's a cool instrumentals set, and titles include "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", "Red Onion", "Sunshine Alley", "Roots", "Sweet Honey Bee", "Nubian Lady", "Smokin' At Tiffany's" and more. New Dead MoonCrack In The System ... LP
Mississippi, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Gross/Ari Y KelmanIs Diss A System? – A Milt Gross Comic Reader (hardcover) ... Book
New York University Press, Mid 20s/2009. New Copy ... $5.99 35.00
A wonderful look at the early work of Milt Gross – a cartoonist who was to the printed page what Mickey Katz was to records! Like Katz, Gross drew a lot of his humor from Yiddish culture – especially the clash between the old and the new in the community of New York's Jewish immigrants – a community of which the Bronx-born Gross was a part, and was able to examine with a humorist eye rivaling that of Mark Twain or Will Rogers in their own sides of the American scene. And while Gross was a hell of a cartoonist, with a style that was increasingly insane over the years – this edition looks at his illustrated books of the 20s – with a long introduction to situate the material, then selections from the books Nize Baby, De Night In De Front From Chreesmas, Hiawatta, Dunk Esk, and Famous Fimmales. The book is 292 pages, hardcover, and filled with black and white illustrations. Book

Ennio MorriconeStark System ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1980. New Copy ... $16.99
Stark sounds from Ennio Morricone – a moody soundtrack from the start of the 80s, and a bit obscure in the Morricone canon – but also a real overlooked gem that's got a feel that's quite different from some of the maestro's bigger work of the time! There's a spare, stepping quality to some of the best tunes here – jagged rhythms that move with weird sonic touches, at a level that's like some of Morricone's coolest thrillers from the early 70s Italian scene – a really surprising return to a style we love so much, especially at a time when Ennio was using larger orchestrations for so many other films. There's a bracing feel to the music that holds on throughout – and titles include "Stark System", "Fantasmi Grotteschi", "Umor Giallo", and other variations. CD also features 8 more bonus tracks as well! CD

New Millie JacksonGet It Outcha System ... LP
Spring, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". One of the greatest moments of genius from the team of Stock Aiken & Waterman – a tune that's decidedly poppy, but has enough of a dark undercurrent to sit nicely next to more obscure 80s groovers! The track was something of a guilty pleasure back in the day, but it seems to sound better and better as the years go on! 12-inch, Vinyl record

New Underground SystemBella Ciao EP ... LP
Ropeadope, 2014. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
An Afro Funk combo, but with a difference! The group's got a strong female vocal presence upfront, and also really knows how to build a tune – mixing together classic rhythms with some inventive keyboard and horn solos – surging strongly forward on "Bella Ciao", a 21st Century version of the kind of longform jam you'd hear on a vintage Fela album! "DON" is moodier and dubbier – almost a post-punk kind of take on Afro Funk – with dark elements in the background at many points, as if Martin Hannett was production! LP, Vinyl record album

GED Soul, 2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer cover of a Pee Wee Ellis tune – one that's done with some great burning Hammond on the intro, then some tight tight horn work that really sends the tune home! The groove's never too over the top – very much in its own bag, and more than enough to sustain things nicely as the track rolls on with some well-measured solo moments on trumpet and organ! The flipside's a slightly mellower number – Neal Creque's great "Dracula" – taken at a nice mid-step pace, with a great jazz vibe overall! 7-inch, Vinyl record

New Clarke Boland Big BandAt Her Majesty's Pleasure ... LP
Black Lion, 1969. Very Good+ ... $5.99
One of the greatest long-form albums from the Clarke Boland Big Band – a sophisticated suite that not only shows off the writing ability of Francy Boland, but also demonstrates the group's ability to swing like a mofo, even when things are serious! The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight". LP, Vinyl record album

Knitting Factory, 1970s. New Copy CD & DVD ... $22.99 24.98
Hard to go wrong with a set like this – because in our opinion, just about every track recorded by Fela is a "best" – which makes the collection a massive batch of goodness all the way through! Every track here is presented in its original extended version – a dozen massive slices of Afro Funk, which packaged together equal the equivalent of at least 5 or 6 separate albums by Fela – another factor that makes the collection a great one! The 2CD set is filled with gems that helped redefine the sound of funk, soul, and world music back in the 70s – titles that include "Monkey Banana", "Everything Scatter", "Expensive Sh*t", "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am", "Underground System (part 2)", "Sorry Tears & Blood", "Colonial Mentality", "Yellow Fever", "He Miss Road", "Black Man's Cry", "Mr Follow Follow", and "Na Poi". Roberta FlackOasis (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1988. New Copy ... $21.99
Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". New Led ZeppelinPresence ... LP
Swan Song/Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $13.99
Led Zeppelin walk back just a bit on their more stylistically sprawling tendencies for this one – and it's a fine set of hard-grooving rock from these uber-legends! We're not sure if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or if they just simply wanted to get out there and kick ass this time, but that's indeed what they do. It's still got some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. VPI 16.5Amazing Record Cleaning Machine! (115 Volt Version) ... Misc
VPI, 2004. New Copy ... $649.99 699.99
Ever wonder how we get our records so clean at Dusty Groove? Well, it's because we've been using this amazing machine for years, and we'll swear by it always as the best way to clean up those old albums you find while diggin' through the crates. The long-tested VPI system is in place with record dealers, collectors, and audiophiles everywhere – and it's even used by the Smithsonian Institute for the albums they have in their archive! The process is simple, but extremely effective: the record is bathed in a special fluid, scrubbed by a special brush to loosen all dirt and debris, and then the whole thing's vacuumed up to remove the fluid dirt and all! We know the machine's a bit pricey, and we balked a bit when we bought our first one. Now, though, we own 3 of them, and we think every penny was very well spent. We can't recommend the machine highly enough, and if you ever need a demonstration, just look at one of the very clean records you've bought from us! (The shipping price will be a bit more than usual, and we'll give you a quote when you order, but at least you won't have to pay sales tax on the whole thing.) Misc
(Please Note: unlike other items we carry, this one is not actually in stock. We need to special order it for you, but we usually get them in a month.)

Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
Raw sound, indeed – and possibly one of the most hard-hitting compilations so far from the Analog Africa label! There's a quality here that's mighty fresh, and which shows us that there's still plenty of African nuggets to find, if you know where to dig! Much of the music has a dark, moody quality that's really striking – still the grooves you'd expect, but an exotic undercurrent that's almost like Ethiopian music – although very much it's own vibe too! The mix is really wonderful, and makes these tracks from Burkina Faso a rich musical discovery – one that's very thoughtfully put together by the Analog Africa label, with their usual strong attention to sound and detailed notes – not to mention a very handsome package. Plastic Strip Press (Norway), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $10.99
Some of the funkiest grooves we've ever heard from the European scene – all tracks from the late 60s and early 70s, recorded as part of the legendary Club 7 in Oslo! Although of Norwegian origin, most of these numbers lean heavily towards American funky styles of soul and jazz at the end of the 60s – grooves that are loose and free, and which often feature some surprisingly great English language vocals – some sung by American soulster Earl Wilson, who was part of the scene at the time, and a key influence on most of the grooves here. The package is a real discovery for our ears – and given that most of these numbers were recorded by the Norwegian broadcasting system for radio play, they weren't really issued publicly at the time – making this collection almost a "sound library soul" set! Titles include "Whole Lotta Love", "Hot Pants", "Come On Children", "Them Changes", and "Moment Of Truth" by The Band No Name; "Groovin" by Karin Krog & Fred Noddelund, "Lite Lite" and "Tamma Song" by Tamma, "Night IN Barcelona" and "Oslo Late July" by Kjellerrock Jazzbandet, "California Soul" and "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream" by Geir Wentzel's Orkester, and "Otinku" by Modern Sound Quintet. VariousReady Or Not Vol 2 – Deep Jazz Grooves From The CBC Radio Canada Archives ... CD
Do Right (Canada), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99
A second fantastic dip into the jazz archives of the Canadian Broadcasting System – home to a heck of a lot more great music than you might think! Since Canada never had great labels like Blue Note or Prestige back in the day, many of the country's best jazz players often recorded for broadcast – cutting some incredible work that was often as good as most of the US jazz of the same period, but which never got the same sort of mainstream exposure. But exposed or not, the music is totally great – and often in modal or groove-heavy styles here – no surprise, given that the package was put together by the folks at Do Right Records, easily one of the greatest sources for modern soulful records from Canada! The package gives long overdue respect to these key jazz gems, and is filled with tons of great moments that maybe even go past the strength of volume one! Titles include "Perception" by Nick Ayoub, "Ton Visage" by Yvan Landtry Trio, "Atlantic Rising" by Sunship Ensemble, "Melancholy" by Alvinn Pall Sextet, "Hidden Strength" by Ted Moses Quintet, "Greek Street Break In" by Sakik Hakim, "Beloved Gift" by Bernie Senesky Trio, "Mas Que Nada" by Emil Normand Sextet, "Quebec On My Mind" by Billy Robinson, and "Maiera" by Fred Stone. Warner, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A great live recording by Lenny Bruce – and a rich document of the level of persecution he was made to feel from the US legal system! The album dates from 1974, but features an earlier performance held by Phil Spector, and licensed to Warner – one that features Lenny running through various instances of his persecution – including legal testimonies and transcripts. And although some albums from this time get a bit over-weighted with persecution, this set somehow manages to avoid most of those pitfalls – and still captures Lenny at his spontaneous best, at a time when he could still make jokes about most of these circumstances! Delta Acoustic/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the darkest concept albums we've ever heard – a set dedicated to creation and the "planet of man" – but really just an amazing experiment in sound! Manfred Schunke put the record together to explore his "artificial head" recording system – and it's got this incredible stereo interplay throughout – sometimes weird sounds leaping back and forth from speaker to speaker, sometimes these loud industrial noises looming from each – and creating this richly organic feeling of sound and soil! There's vocals on the set – some sung, some spoken – but most of the music is heavy on echo, noise, textures, and tones – at a sonic level that's more striking than most experiments to follow! Swan Song/Atlantic (Japan), 1976. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
New Missy ElliottUnder Construction ... CD
Atlantic, 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Missy and Timbaland (and the usual cast of guest stars) are back and hotter than ever before on Missy's fourth full length, much more of a hip hop record this time, with tons of old school party shouts and new school neo-electro production! Under Construction is kind of a concept album (don't worry, not in the Jethro Tull kind of way) with a theme that celebrates the hip hop golden age of the mid-to-late 80s but with a modern, probably timeless flavor. The status quo R&B that Missy can't seem to get out of her system is here only at a minimum – this is a hip hop record! Past guests like Method Man (turning in a great remake of "Bring The Pain"), Ludacris, and Jay Z show up as well as 50 Cent, Ms. Jade, Beyonce Knowles, and TLC – but as usual, no one steals the show from Mis and Tim. No one would claim Missy is the most scholarly of lyricists, but as a conduit for attitude and a spicy groove she can't be beat, plus her topical and scatological rhymes and choruses fit these hip hop party bumpers like a Kangol & a gold chain. Tons of shout outs to and samples of the old schoolers that are just way too true to be nostalgic, plus strong production from Timbaland that isn't afraid to risk his reputation as an innovator by referencing his influences. The duo may have produced more astoundingly great singles in the recent past, but this is Missy and Timbaland's magnum opus, as far as full lengths go. 13 tracks including "Work It", "Go To The Floor", "Bring The Pain" featuring Method Man, "Funky Fresh Dressed" featuring Ms Jade, "Slide", "Play That Beat", "Ain't That Funny", and more. There's some incredible work on tenor sax on some of the cuts – especially "Ikoyi Blindness" and "Kalakuta Show", both of which begin with incredibly well-wrought solos that show Fela as an incredibly strong jazz-based player. The cut "Don't Make Garan Garan" is a slow building groover – one that starts with spooky tinny keyboards, mixes in guitar comping, and then kicks into a nice tight percussion riff. The CD's completed by "Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolow" – translated as "Slap Me Make I Get Money", an attack on the way that the rich bend the system of justice to their own needs. CD

Sublime sounds from the 80s underground – electronic gems that paved the way for pop work of the future, but which still stay pretty darn dark overall! The cuts here start with the early European electric modes of the post-punk years, and spin out through the growing wave of cool synthy cuts that would come to be known as "imports" on this side of the Atlantic – the kind of music that went onto influence generations of house and techno producers to come! Yet here, things are still pretty darn spare, and still very basic – those great early moments when folks found a way to compress all the experiments of the previous decade into some tighter little tunes – often with a bombastic quality that made them work on the dancefloor – even though the kind of dancefloor that usually worked best was filled with lots of dark curtains and black lights! Albums are usually featured in a book like this, but the authors do a great job of illustrating the diversity of 45 labels on the Jamaican scene – the wealth of designs and colors that make collecting reggae 45s a past time that's almost as pleasing from a visual perspective as it is from an audio one! Plus, given the obscurity of most of these records, the book's even more valuable – a much-needed record of these small pressings that never got much distribution – laid out here in beautiful full color images. Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 16.99
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. The set's got the feel of a spacious amphitheater concert, but is filled with new mixes of Mondo Grosso's soulful club work – interspersed with a few additional tunes, all mixed together live in this unusual setting! This part 2 features the tracks "Blaze It Up", "Shake Ya Body", "Discarga", "Shinin (Mondo Grosso rmx)", and "Blazilian Rhyme (Fearless mix)" – as well as a bonus disc with the tracks "Fire & Ice (Switch voc mix)", "Motormouth (2020 Soundsystem remx)", "Dancefloor Combat", and more live material! New Le Systeme CrapoutchikAussi Loin Que Je Me Souvienne ... LP
Flamofone/Wah Wah (Spain), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The great first album from French pop psyce combo Le Systeme Crapoutchik – released in '69 – wonderful stuff from that great era in which the creative boundlessness of the psych era was fusing so well with catchier, more accessible pop around the world! While they employed styles that were well in use internationally in the late 60s, Le Systeme Crapoutchik still have a pretty unique vibe of their own. From spare, fairly spooky passages to hard-charging rock, always with great vocal harmonies. Includes the title track plus "La Chanson Des Amis", "L'Amour Avec Un Grande A", "Une Vie", "Premier Amour", "Chagrin D'Amour", ""C'est I'Hiver" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

New VariousFunk Globo – The Sound Of Neo Baile ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Contempoary Brazilian grooves compiled by the folks at Funk Globo – blistering batch of beats and basslines – all served up with a very intense sound! The music here isn't the trendy, intellectual style coming from Brazil in recent years – but instead the sort that plays big at house parties, underground clubs, and even street festivals where the booming beats are a perfect match for a well-crafted soundsystem! In fact, the sound here is so heavy, you might want to turn down the bass a bit on your stereo before playback – lest you blast the dishes off your shelves in the kitchen. Titles include "Vai Danada" by Guto De Almeida, "Saca Me Desse Banze" by Gato Preto, "Cicadas' Dance" by Chuck Upbeat, "Gostoso" by Ophex, and "Xao Trap" by DJ Comrade. LP, Vinyl record album

New VariousBest Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem – Part A ... LP
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Titles on this first part of the vinyl edition include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, and "One Life" by The Albert.
