Post-Mizell, and less jazz fusiony than Johnny's mid 70s work, but not a bad funk album! The title cut's a nice groover that has a sort of sing-song Eddie Harris funk feel, and which features Johnny Hammond complaining about "The System", and how it's out to get him. Other cuts include "Contact Funk", "Ann", "For People Only", and "Losing You".

The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System".

They left a blank in the title, so we'll never know what it is they witnessed – but that's alright with us, because Osaka Monoaurail's so goshdarn funky, we can always forgive them for their weird choice of titles! The group's a real standout in the international deep funk underground – as they play with an intensity to match the James Brown Band of the late 60s King years – really ripping along the rhythms with incredible tightness, and making their 9 piece lineup of horns, organ, percussion, and guitar burn with a really classic funky power! Vocalist Ryo Nakata has a weirdly raspy style that makes him one of the most striking singers in funk today – no copycat modes at all, and a rough and ready vocal approach that only adds even more weight to the groove of the group. CD features a blistering live performance that runs for nearly 80 minutes – 24 tracks in all, partying seamlessly next to one another in a mix of classics and original tunes. Titles include "Back & Alive 77", "The Coming Back", "Jam 1976", "Double Up Now", "New New Type Thing", "Whatever You Do", "Thankful", "What It Is What It Was", and "Theme From Shaft".

Dub rarities from Lee Perry at Black Ark studio – rumbling riddims and hazy atmosphere that is as hypnotic and incredible as ever – a wealth of material rarely heard outside of sound system dances collected by the unbeatable Pressure Sounds label! A steady, if often seedy rhythm holds this magical dub plate mixes together – with more tripped out touches on the outer edges – be it a trippy use of echo, clattering bits of percussion or harder to explain vibes. Amazing stuff featuring Lee & The Upsetters with Augustus Pablo, Keith Rowe, Winston Right, Clive Hylton, Junior Murvin and others. Includes "Dub Plate Pressure" by Lee Perry, "Lama Lava Mix One" by Agustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "Groove Dubber", "Groove Rider", "Jucky Skank", "Zeal Of The Lord", "Dub Of The Lord" and more by The Upsetters, "Bushdub Corntrash" by Winston Wright & The Upsetters, "Roots Train Number Two" by Junior Murvin & The Upsetters, "Living Dub" by Keith Rowe & The Upsetters and more. 20 tracks in all.

A great bit of crossover dancefloor – and the one standout hit from The System! "In My System" has a groove that's electric and soulful at the same time – nicely percolated and a bit compressed – served up with a hook that won't quit! "Now I Am Electric" is a bit more frenetic – certainly electric in beats and keys, and with lots of vocoder bits!

An early Adrian Sherwood produced dub excursion, featuring the sort of rotating lineup that was the hallmark of this period of the Dub Syndicate, before it became a vehicle for Style Scott's rhythm excursions. The sound is at times denser, and at others more open, with a more experimental and somewhat humorous approach than some of the straight reggae titles in the On U catalog, but Sherwood's deep space sound fully intact throughout. Includes "Hi Fi Gets A Pounding Pts. 1 & 2", "African Head Charge – Don't Care About Space Invader Machines Pts. 1 & 2", "10K At 0VU-60Hz – Mind Boggles!" and "Crucial Tony Tries To Rescue The Space Invaders (with only 10p)", 9 tracks in all.

The second domestically released album from King Sunny Ade and His African Beats, with the wonderful Ju Ju sound ringing throughout every piece, from the up tempo numbers to the more mellow grooves. Interlocking, chirping guitar parts are layered over nicely percolating rhythms, 9 tracks in all: "Synchro Feelings – Hako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele" and "Synchro Reprise".

Heavy psych from Detroit, in the years before Bob Seger became a "lighters in the air" peddler of redneck theme songs. Cut from the same cloth as the early Mitch Ryder, Amboy Dukes and Grand Funk that were the hallmark of the Motor City rock sound of the day, most of the tracks on this outing are concise rockers, but the band delves into a bit of nice jamminess on side 2. Includes 'Tales Of Lucy Blue", "Ivory", "Gone Down Home", "Train Man", "White Wall", "Black Eyed Girl", "2 + 2 = ?" and "Doctor Fine".

Nasty electro punk from the enigmatic Lou Champagne – an obscure early 80s effort issue on Lou's own record label, but a killer cooker that would have shook the New York scene up plenty – had Champagne been working in the Big Apple at the time! There's a dark blend of analogue electronics and punkish sensibilities that almost reminds us of Suicide at their best – and the album's certainly a great companion to their classic first album – although at points, Lou's handling of various waveforms is almost even more deft – creating a sinister sensibility that really makes this one hold up strongly over the years! Titles include "Do Something", "Machine Muzik", "Invisible Prisons", "Another Dimension", "Silent Walking", and "Broken Hearts".

A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs".

Why these guys never got over bigger is beyond us! Between A Rock And A Hard Place is filled with dope rhymes, timeless beats, and a mellow, tuneful vibe that's as strong as just about anything we can think of from that fertile early-to-mid 80s scene. Titles include "Lower Da Boom", "Cummin' Thru Ya F**kin Block" feat Redman, "Drama", "Dynamite Soul", "C'Mon Wit Da Git Down" (plus the remix feat Busta Rhymes), "What Goes On?", and "Wrong Side Of Da Tracks". A couple of bonus tracks on this 2013 CD version: "Dynamic Soul II (Lip Service Remix)" feat Mad Skillz and "It's Gettin Hot (Remix)".

Blistering sounds from Ballister – quite possibly the fiercest album so far from this key Chicago group – and that's saying a lot, given the intensity of their previous work! The trio really seem to know each other intimately by this point – so that they can really let loose, and explore a great range of sounds from the saxes of Dave Rempis, drums of Paal Nilssen-Love, and the cello, guitar, and electronics of Fred Lonberg-Holm! The album's an especially great illustration of the way that Fred's really opened up his energy level in recent years – and become a much more organic player, with a confidence in his sounds we never would have expected a decade ago. Rempis is masterful on alto, tenor, and baritone – blowing with a boldness that puts him firmly in line with a range of Chicago improvisers – and Paal's visiting drum work really pushes the whole thing forward strongly. Titles include "Cockloft", "Smolder", and "Phantom Box System".

Two cuts from the Edutainment LP. KRS asks "Who Protects Us From You?" over spare dancehall sythesizers and on "Why Is That" KRS applies his exegesis of the Pentateuch to today's educational system with a dope piano line.

One of the greatest long-form albums from the Clarke Boland Big Band – a sophisticated suite that not only shows off the writing ability of Francy Boland, but also demonstrates the group's ability to swing like a mofo, even when things are serious! The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight".

Aggro hip hop/noise rock from Death Grips – one of the more surprising major label pick ups in years! Includes "Get Got", "The Fryer", "Lost Boys", "Black Jack", "System Blower", "Hacker", "Bitch Please", "F*** That", "Hacker" and more.

Hard to go wrong with a set like this – because in our opinion, just about every track recorded by Fela is a "best" – which makes the collection a massive batch of goodness all the way through! Every track here is presented in its original extended version – a dozen massive slices of Afro Funk, which packaged together equal the equivalent of at least 5 or 6 separate albums by Fela – another factor that makes the collection a great one! The 2CD set is filled with gems that helped redefine the sound of funk, soul, and world music back in the 70s – titles that include "Monkey Banana", "Everything Scatter", "Expensive Sh*t", "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am", "Underground System (part 2)", "Sorry Tears & Blood", "Colonial Mentality", "Yellow Fever", "He Miss Road", "Black Man's Cry", "Mr Follow Follow", and "Na Poi".

A totally amazing little package – every single album recorded by Fela Kuti, served up in tiny LP-style sleeves, and brought together in one excellent box set – with a bonus movie as well! Sweetly percolated sounds from Five Star – a great collection that finally brings together all the remix material they served up on singles during their big run for Sony Music! The group burst into prominence at a time when music formats were really expanding, especially in the UK – where usually a few different varieties of a single were issued at once. Given the already-catchy sound of the group, their style is a perfect one for mixing – usually great hooks that really stand out, no matter what the changes made – which in most cases here, are for the better – and definitely emphasize the groove of the tunes! 2CD set features 26 tracks in all – and titles include "Hide & Seek (ext dance mix)", "Crazy (12" version)", "System Addict (dub rmx)", "Stay Out Of My Life (12" version)", "Let Me Be The One (dance mix by Hardrock)", "Love Take Over (Paul Hardcastle's ext version)", "RSVP (remix s'il vous plait)", "Whenever You're Ready (crazy dub jammy)", "Are You Man Enough (Shep Pettibone 7" mix)", and "Another Weekend (Friday night dub mix)".

Nice mid 80s UK pop soul from Five Star – sweet family act that's kind of in the mode that's a bit of an unofficial British answer to the cheery family pop soul vibe of groups like DeBarge and New Edition at the time – and a sweet one! Lean, lightly thumping synth soul backdrops and nice vocals from the group on some very catchy songs! Titles include "Love Take Over", "All Fall Down", "Let Me Be The One", "System Addict", "Hide And Seek", "RSVP", "Crazy", "Winning" and more.

A stunning batch of funky big band tracks from the Kashmere Stage Band – sounding a lot fuller than on their first LP – thanks to an expanded lineup that gives them a whole new sound! The group are grooving here in a mode that's a lot like classic 70s blacksploitation soundtrack work – with a full ensemble that features funky drums, electric bass, and keys in the rhythms, plus lots of tight funky horns over the top! Tracks are long, and groove with a jazzy flourish that we wouldn't have expected so strongly – hitting hard on plenty of nice nice numbers that include "Kash Register", "Do Your Thing", "Angel", "The Zero Point", and "Getting It Out Of My System".

A massive exploration of the music of Kashmere Stage Band – the legendary Texas funk combo whose work has been pushed heavily over the years by Wax Poetics, Stones Throw, and many others! The double-length set goes even deeper than any of the vinyl reissues of work by the group – and features some previously unreleased tracks, alternate takes on their funkiest numbers, and a full 10 extra live tracks never heard before! The Kashmere groove is incredible – blasting horns, scratchy guitars, and funky drums – all wrapped super-tight around a range of original material and some more familiar numbers – all recast here in super-heavy funk mode! Classic 70s work from KC & The Sunshine Band – a record that's not as hit-heavy as previous efforts, but still a plenty great set that's filled with catchy dancefloor funk! KC's clearly feeling the heat of the disco fire he helped to ignite a few years before – and there's definitely an ear hear towards tracks that would boom out nicely on a heavier sound system – kind of a deepening of the sometimes bargain basement production the group got on earlier TK records. That approach doesn't dampen the groove, though, and there's still a nice mix here of soul, funk, club, and tropical modes – sometimes a bit off the mark, but still a heck of a lot better than most of the group's contemporaries! Titles include a remake of "It's The Same Old Song", plus "Who Do Ya Love", "How About A Little Love", "Sho-Nuff'" and "Come To My Island".

Dubplate specials from King Tubby's Hometown Hi Fi Sound System in the mid to late 70s! Mainly cut over Bunny "Striker" Lee rhythms – and rocked the sound systems before finding their way on to vinyl back in the day. Features dub versions of originals by Johnny Clarke, Ronnie Davis, Leroy Smart, Wayne Jarrett and more. Led Zeppelin walk back just a bit on their more stylistically sprawling tendencies for this one – and it's a fine set of hard-grooving rock from these uber-legends! We're not sure if they got some of the more ambitious ideas out of their system with Physical Graffiti, or if they just simply wanted to get out there and kick ass this time, but that's indeed what they do. It's still got some longer songs and complicated changes – this is Led Zeppelin, after all – and the lack of over-played classic rock radio fodder actually makes this one a better listen nowadays than the more iconic albums. Raw sound, indeed – and possibly one of the most hard-hitting compilations so far from the Analog Africa label! There's a quality here that's mighty fresh, and which shows us that there's still plenty of African nuggets to find, if you know where to dig! Much of the music has a dark, moody quality that's really striking – still the grooves you'd expect, but an exotic undercurrent that's almost like Ethiopian music – although very much it's own vibe too! The mix is really wonderful, and makes these tracks from Burkina Faso a rich musical discovery – one that's very thoughtfully put together by the Analog Africa label, with their usual strong attention to sound and detailed notes – not to mention a very handsome package. It's hard to sum up the sound of a continent in such a tiny package – but the 3CD set is surprisingly rich nonetheless, thanks to a very good track selection, and a tight focus on the hippest material available! The collection mixes both older African grooves with current cuts that represent the freshest sounds of recent years – and the package is divided into three differently-themed CDs – Stars, which features some of the biggest names of the continent; Roots, which features some more classic-styled work; and Dance, which showcases some of the crossover modes in more recent years. Sublime bossa groovers from Italy! The first volume of this series was one of our favorite compilations that year it was released – and this second volume is equally as great! Schema groover Gerardo Frisina serves up a hand-picked batch of 16 tunes, mostly classic numbers from the late 60s and early 70s, pulled from the ranks of Italian soundtrack, jazz, and easy listening albums – all with a flair for making the bossa even groovier than it already is! Electric keyboards abound – and the rhythms run from dreamy to driving to slightly funky, always at the right pace for the material, and always making the set dance with delight! One of Cecil's 2 Blue Note recordings, and a large group session that includes Eddie Gale, Jimmy Lyons, Ken McIntyre, Henry Grimes, and Andrew Cyrille. The record's probably one of the most out recordings ever on the label, and tracks are based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes. The tracks are long, and titles include "Steps", "Enter, Evening", and "Tales (8 Whisps)".

The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight".

Hard to go wrong with a set like this – because in our opinion, just about every track recorded by Fela is a "best" – which makes the collection a massive batch of goodness all the way through! Every track here is presented in its original extended version – a dozen massive slices of Afro Funk, which packaged together equal the equivalent of at least 5 or 6 separate albums by Fela – another factor that makes the collection a great one! The 2CD set is filled with gems that helped redefine the sound of funk, soul, and world music back in the 70s – titles that include "Monkey Banana", "Everything Scatter", "Expensive Sh*t", "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am", "Underground System (part 2)", "Sorry Tears & Blood", "Colonial Mentality", "Yellow Fever", "He Miss Road", "Black Man's Cry", "Mr Follow Follow", and "Na Poi". Also features a bonus DVD – with Fela's 1984 performance at the Glastonbury Festival, and an interview too!

The title's quite right on this one – because the group's heavy on dub, but also uses trombones as well – all in a mode that sometimes recalls the classic sound of Kingston, yet which also has some deep funk elements as well! Twin trombones stretch out beautifully – often quite rhythmic in their approach, and intertwined with tight basslines, echoey drums, and sweet guitar riffs too – and titles include "Trio Tro Tro", "Public Option (Prince Polo dub)", "Q Street (Subatomic Sound System rmx)", "Washingtonian", "Neolithic", and "We Will Begin Again (DJ Trainwreck rmx)".

On the heels of their Sessomato Experience LP, Easy Tempo release this compilation of older Italian soundtrack grooves – by Luis Bacalov, Armando Trovajoli, Piero Umiliani, and Piero Piccioni – remixed by modern European mixologists – like Kid Loco, Jazz Brothers, Rainer Truby Trio, Maffia Sound System, and Gak Sato. As with the other projects, the effort is an attempt update some of these funky grooves, and turn them towards the modern dancefloor. The album's packaged on 3 long 12" singles, which makes it extra DJ friendly, and it's a nice batch of tracks to mix in with a lively now sound set.

Raw sound, indeed – and possibly one of the most hard-hitting compilations so far from the Analog Africa label! There's a quality here that's mighty fresh, and which shows us that there's still plenty of African nuggets to find, if you know where to dig! Much of the music has a dark, moody quality that's really striking – still the grooves you'd expect, but an exotic undercurrent that's almost like Ethiopian music – although very much it's own vibe too! The mix is really wonderful, and makes these tracks from Burkina Faso a rich musical discovery – one that's very thoughtfully put together by the Analog Africa label, with their usual strong attention to sound and detailed notes – not to mention a very handsome package. The nicest issue of this magazine to date – one that tightens up the format a bit, and the content as well! The focus here is still strongly on the contemporary reggae and dancehall scene – with features on Stylo G, The Reggae Rajahs, Dirt Soundsystem, Mungo's Hi-Fi, Winston Riley, Popcaan, and the Massive B label – plus tips on starting your own soundsystem, and a look at Jamaica's electric culture! The issue feels longer than before, with lots of black and white photos – and with no ads at all, there's plenty of room for the articles.

One of moodier and more atmospheric efforts from Markus Popp's creatively fruitful mid 90s period! On Systemisch, Oval is essentially a trio, featuring Popp, Frank Metzger and Sebastian Oschatz – and it marks a pretty big step forward for 90s electronic experimentalism. The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! By this point you're well informed about the status of Coxsone Dodd's Studio One operation as the cornerstone of so much Jamaican music, and Soul Jazz has approached the catalog from just about every angle, covering nearly all the bases before landing here on this dub set. The sly Island grooves are stripped down to their bare essentials, then given a tasteful bit of dubby gloss at the hands of Sylvan Morris, for a massive collection that'll rule your stereo like Studio One rocked the sound systems back in the day. 17 tracks in all, wrapped in a nice package that includes interviews with Morris and Dodd, and fully annotated as to which numbers the rhythms were originally cut as the backing for. One of the most ambitious albums ever recorded by avant violinist Leroy Jenkins – a very politically-driven record that has even more power than some of his earlier works! Jenkins' vision is very sharp here – expressed brilliantly in the album's side-long title track, with help from Andrew Cyrille on percussion, Anthony Davis on piano and electric piano, George Lewis on trombone and electronics, and Richard Teitelbaum on moog and moog systems! The album also features some shorter tracks by an acoustic group without Tietelbaum – titles that include "Dancing On A Melody", "Kick Back Stomp", "Through The Ages Jehovah, and "The Clowns".

The great first album from French pop psyce combo Le Systeme Crapoutchik – released in '69 – wonderful stuff from that great era in which the creative boundlessness of the psych era was fusing so well with catchier, more accessible pop around the world! While they employed styles that were well in use internationally in the late 60s, Le Systeme Crapoutchik still have a pretty unique vibe of their own. From spare, fairly spooky passages to hard-charging rock, always with great vocal harmonies.
