Coolin SystemRefrigerate After Opening (with download) ... LP
GED Soul, 2014. New Copy ... $12.99
No need to refrigerate this great little set – as room temperature's only going to make the whole thing even funkier over time! The Coolin System are hotter than ever here – not only tighter on the instrumental tip than we remember, but also picking up some much deeper influences from the 60s – including a touch of trumpet inspiration from Blue Mitchell, killer keyboards from Cedar Walton, and a blast of Brazilian funk from Som Tres! These guys use all the best elements to rework a small combo funky sound way past the usual – and the all-instrumental set unfurls some sweet lines on Fender Rhodes, Hammond, trumpet, tenor, and flute – on cuts that include "Beyond Mobius", "Homenagem A Mongo", "Blue Juice", "Soul Village", "Funky Mule", "Soul Thing", and "Jungle Juice". New Herbie HancockSound System ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- ... $3.99
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System". Millie JacksonGet It Outcha System ... LP
Spring, 1978. Very Good ... $2.99
A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". Jack McDuffHeatin' System ... LP
Cadet, 1972. Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99
One of the most amazing, expansive albums ever recorded by Brother Jack McDuff – a session that we'd rank right up there with his classic Moon Rappin for Blue Note – and which has an equally stretched out feel! Although some of Jack's other albums for Cadet in the 70s have a bit more of a keyboard-centric feel, this album's heavy on Hammond all the way through – played by McDuff with sharp edges, soaring solos, and that amazing sense of timing that few other players could match! But possibly even more amazing is the group on the set – a hip batch of cats who include Phil Upchurch and Sam Jones on bass, Don Myrick and Dave Young on tenor and flute, Bobby Alston on trumpet, Marty Roberts on guitar, and Derf Reklaw on percussion – all working wonderfully with McDuff arrangements on some very long tunes! The double-length nature of the 2LP record really lets the group stretch out nicely – and there's a tremendous sense of energy throughout – almost a mode that matches Charles Earland's Leaving This Planet album. Titles include "Ain't No Sunshine", "Radiation", "The Prophet", "The Boiler", "Pressure Gauge", "The Heatin System", "Elmo Tucker", and "Lonesome Is The Night". LP, Vinyl record album

New Bob Seger SystemRamblin' Gamblin' Man ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Good+ ... $5.99
Heavy psych from Detroit, in the years before Bob Seger became a "lighters in the air" peddler of redneck theme songs. Cut from the same cloth as the early Mitch Ryder, Amboy Dukes and Grand Funk that were the hallmark of the Motor City rock sound of the day, most of the tracks on this outing are concise rockers, but the band delves into a bit of nice jamminess on side 2. Includes 'Tales Of Lucy Blue", "Ivory", "Gone Down Home", "Train Man", "White Wall", "Black Eyed Girl", "2 + 2 = ?" and "Doctor Fine". LP, Vinyl record album

Underground SystemBella Ciao EP ... LP
Ropeadope, 2014. New Copy (pic cover)... $11.99
An Afro Funk combo, but with a difference! The group's got a strong female vocal presence upfront, and also really knows how to build a tune – mixing together classic rhythms with some inventive keyboard and horn solos – surging strongly forward on "Bella Ciao", a 21st Century version of the kind of longform jam you'd hear on a vintage Fela album! "DON" is moodier and dubbier – almost a post-punk kind of take on Afro Funk – with dark elements in the background at many points, as if Martin Hannett was production! LP, Vinyl record album

Dead MoonCrack In The System ... LP
Mississippi, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

A spanish version of some great crossover dancefloor grooves – and the one standout hit from The System! "In My System" has a groove that's electric and soulful at the same time – nicely percolated and a bit compressed – served up with a hook that won't quit! 12-inch, Vinyl record

New Lou Champagne SystemNo Visible Means (180 gram white vinyl pressing – limited, numbered) ... LP
Pterodactyl/Medical, 1983. Used (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nasty electro punk from the enigmatic Lou Champagne – an obscure early 80s effort issue on Lou's own record label, but a killer cooker that would have shook the New York scene up plenty – had Champagne been working in the Big Apple at the time! There's a dark blend of analogue electronics and punkish sensibilities that almost reminds us of Suicide at their best – and the album's certainly a great companion to their classic first album – although at points, Lou's handling of various waveforms is almost even more deft – creating a sinister sensibility that really makes this one hold up strongly over the years! Titles include "Do Something", "Machine Muzik", "Invisible Prisons", "Another Dimension", "Silent Walking", and "Broken Hearts". LP, Vinyl record album

New Milt Gross/Ari Y KelmanIs Diss A System? – A Milt Gross Comic Reader (hardcover) ... Book
New York University Press, Mid 20s/2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful look at the early work of Milt Gross – a cartoonist who was to the printed page what Mickey Katz was to records! Like Katz, Gross drew a lot of his humor from Yiddish culture – especially the clash between the old and the new in the community of New York's Jewish immigrants – a community of which the Bronx-born Gross was a part, and was able to examine with a humorist eye rivaling that of Mark Twain or Will Rogers in their own sides of the American scene. And while Gross was a hell of a cartoonist, with a style that was increasingly insane over the years – this edition looks at his illustrated books of the 20s – with a long introduction to situate the material, then selections from the books Nize Baby, De Night In De Front From Chreesmas, Hiawatta, Dunk Esk, and Famous Fimmales. The book is 292 pages, hardcover, and filled with black and white illustrations. Book

New Coolin SystemCoolin System ... CD
GED Soul, 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Cool jazz funk from The Coolin' System – a group that lays out a funky backdrop, and one that actually generates plenty of heat despite the group's name! Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, bass, drums and percussion bring the funk, along with a vamping guitar – but what we love about this record is all the measured out space that the group provides from some really sweet solos all around. It adds a late 60s-styled jazz funk vibe that's not easy to pull off, but everyone in this group can play, and they make it seem easy. Players include Mikie Martel on trumpet & flugelhorn, JD Douglas on tenor sax and flute, Pablo Ahogado on Hammond and Rhodes, David Guy on bass, James Bonomo on drums and Andy Wilmoth on percussion. AJ Eason provides guest vocals on "I Need Some Money", but for the most part it's a cool instrumentals set, and titles include "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", "Red Onion", "Sunshine Alley", "Roots", "Sweet Honey Bee", "Nubian Lady", "Smokin' At Tiffany's" and more. New Ennio MorriconeStark System ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stark sounds from Ennio Morricone – a moody soundtrack from the start of the 80s, and a bit obscure in the Morricone canon – but also a real overlooked gem that's got a feel that's quite different from some of the maestro's bigger work of the time! There's a spare, stepping quality to some of the best tunes here – jagged rhythms that move with weird sonic touches, at a level that's like some of Morricone's coolest thrillers from the early 70s Italian scene – a really surprising return to a style we love so much, especially at a time when Ennio was using larger orchestrations for so many other films. There's a bracing feel to the music that holds on throughout – and titles include "Stark System", "Fantasmi Grotteschi", "Umor Giallo", and other variations. CD also features 8 more bonus tracks as well! CD

Code IIIPlanet Of Man (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Delta Acoustic/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
One of the darkest concept albums we've ever heard – a set dedicated to creation and the "planet of man" – but really just an amazing experiment in sound! Manfred Schunke put the record together to explore his "artificial head" recording system – and it's got this incredible stereo interplay throughout – sometimes weird sounds leaping back and forth from speaker to speaker, sometimes these loud industrial noises looming from each – and creating this richly organic feeling of sound and soil! There's vocals on the set – some sung, some spoken – but most of the music is heavy on echo, noise, textures, and tones – at a sonic level that's more striking than most experiments to follow! Bob Dylan/The BandBasement Tapes Complete – Bootleg Series Volume 11 (6CD set – with book) ... CD
Columbia, 1967. New Copy 6CD & Book ... $126.99 149.98
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – finally available after all these years in a definitive, officially-sanctioned box set for the first time ever! The original 1975 LP version was (and still is) an incredible sampler of the original recordings – also an appendix, with some later material added to it – and it really only hinted at the ragged glory of the 1967 sessions. Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of the originals, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Here for the first time ever is a legitimate release of a great wealth of the raw, original Woodstock recordings, painstakingly restored from the original master tapes – but without the overdubs, editing and tinkerings of the mid 70s LP version, and other tracks that never been officially released in any form! The Complete box set edition is truly incredible – with the material laid out as close to chronological order as possible, as based on Garth Hudson's session recording numbering system – and it really is as close a true, complete Basement Tapes as the world is ever likely to see. 138 tracks on 6CDs – including "Edge Of The Ocean", "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It", "Johnny Todd", "The Hills Of Mexico", "Too Much Of Nothing (Take 2)", "Tears of Rage (Take 1)", "It Ain't Me Babe", "Ain't No More Cane (Take 2)", "900 Miles From Home", "One Kind Of Favor", "All You Have To Do Is Dream (Take 1)", "2 Dollars And 99 Cents", "Down By The Station", "Cok All Ye Fair And Tender Ladies", "The Spanish Song (Take 1)" and many, many more. Also includes a 120-page deluxe-bound book with rare and unseen photos and extensive notes. CD

New Brian EnoDiscreet Music ... LP
Obscure, 1975. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A modern minimalist watershed and though a bit academic, still pretty darn beautiful! This early instrumental release was the first time that Eno really explored his farther-reaching ideas on record. The set features 2 pieces: "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer; and "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel", which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. FelaBest Of The Black President 2 (deluxe edition with bonus DVD) ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1970s. New Copy CD & DVD ... $16.99 24.98
Hard to go wrong with a set like this – because in our opinion, just about every track recorded by Fela is a "best" – which makes the collection a massive batch of goodness all the way through! Every track here is presented in its original extended version – a dozen massive slices of Afro Funk, which packaged together equal the equivalent of at least 5 or 6 separate albums by Fela – another factor that makes the collection a great one! The 2CD set is filled with gems that helped redefine the sound of funk, soul, and world music back in the 70s – titles that include "Monkey Banana", "Everything Scatter", "Expensive Sh*t", "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am", "Underground System (part 2)", "Sorry Tears & Blood", "Colonial Mentality", "Yellow Fever", "He Miss Road", "Black Man's Cry", "Mr Follow Follow", and "Na Poi". Lean, indeed silky sounds from Silk Rhodes – a Baltimore duo who put a pretty wonderful contemporary spin 70s funky soul influences, as filtered through 80s boogie and electro and hip hop beatcraft. If that doesn't sound all that original as described, you really outta give this a listen, because it's got quite a distinctive vibe. It's got a bit of low-fi vibe, but they have the soulful vocals to really get it over in a big way. Very promising stuff on the always adventurous Stones Throw label. VPI 16.5Amazing Record Cleaning Machine! (115 Volt Version) ... Misc
VPI, 2004. New Copy ... $649.99 699.99
Ever wonder how we get our records so clean at Dusty Groove? Well, it's because we've been using this amazing machine for years, and we'll swear by it always as the best way to clean up those old albums you find while diggin' through the crates. The long-tested VPI system is in place with record dealers, collectors, and audiophiles everywhere – and it's even used by the Smithsonian Institute for the albums they have in their archive! The process is simple, but extremely effective: the record is bathed in a special fluid, scrubbed by a special brush to loosen all dirt and debris, and then the whole thing's vacuumed up to remove the fluid dirt and all! We know the machine's a bit pricey, and we balked a bit when we bought our first one. Now, though, we own 3 of them, and we think every penny was very well spent. We can't recommend the machine highly enough, and if you ever need a demonstration, just look at one of the very clean records you've bought from us! (The shipping price will be a bit more than usual, and we'll give you a quote when you order, but at least you won't have to pay sales tax on the whole thing.) Misc
(Please Note: unlike other items we carry, this one is not actually in stock. We need to special order it for you, but we usually get them in a month.)

VariousIn The Christmas Groove ... CD
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 14.98
One of the coolest Christmas compilations you could ever hope to own – but you probably guessed that already, from the cover image that pays tribute to a classic set from James Brown! The JB image is certainly well placed – as most of the tracks here are deeply funky Holiday tunes – the kind of gritty seasonal ditties that were only ever issued as funky 45s back in the day – and most really only on a local level, too! Strut's really outdone themselves with this excellent collection – as it features a fair bit of Christmas rarities we've never heard before, but which are totally wonderful – all-new tunes, not common Christmas cover versions – played and performed with a hell of a soulful feel throughout. Knock that ol' Bing Crosby record off the turntable, and give this one plenty of spins this December – and dammit, the music's so great, you may well find yourself playing the collection well into the New Year too! Titles include "Boogaloo Santa Claus" by JD McDonald, "Angel's Christmas" by Wild Honey, "Black Christmas" by Harlem Children's Chorus, "Getting Down For Xmas" by Milly & Silly, "Soul Santa" by Funk Machine, "Funky Funky Christmas" by Electric Jungle, "Christmas Present Blues" by Jimmy Reed, "Santa's Got A Bag Of Soul" by Soul Saints Orchestra, "Christmas Morning (Sean Bonniwell edit)" by Zebra, "Let's Get It Together This Christmas" by Harvey Averne, "Auld Lang Syne" by Black On White Affair, and "The New Year" by Jimmy Jules & The Nuclear Soul System. Sublime bossa groovers from Italy! The first volume of this series was one of our favorite compilations that year it was released – and this second volume is equally as great! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of fuzzy guitars and balls-out action on most of these tracks – but the overall execution is less standard, more unusual, and has a gritty, garagey intensity that so many of the bigger Seattle acts lost right away. And even though we lived through that time (and yes, bought our share of the records, too), there's still plenty here we'd never heard before – which is really saying a lot to the archive-digging crew at Soul Jazz! Titles include "This Town" by Starfish, "Windyy" by Nubbin, "Jail Ain't Stoppin Us" by Saucer, "Same 18" by Hitting Birth, "Beverly" by Medelicious, "Blind Man's Holiday" by Machine, "Woodstock Unvisited" by Crunchbird, "123" by Pod, "Take Me For A Ride" by Yellow Snow, "The System" by Attica, "Run Around" by Starfish, "Wench" by Bundle Of Hiss, "Fields" by Chemistry Set, "Bleed" by Thrillhammer, "AM FM" by Shug, "It's Getting Late" by Small Stars, "It Smiles" by Soylent Green, and "Debbie Had A Dream" by Treehouse. VariousReady Or Not Vol 2 – Deep Jazz Grooves From The CBC Radio Canada Archives ... CD
Do Right (Canada), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99
A second fantastic dip into the jazz archives of the Canadian Broadcasting System – home to a heck of a lot more great music than you might think! Since Canada never had great labels like Blue Note or Prestige back in the day, many of the country's best jazz players often recorded for broadcast – cutting some incredible work that was often as good as most of the US jazz of the same period, but which never got the same sort of mainstream exposure. But exposed or not, the music is totally great – and often in modal or groove-heavy styles here – no surprise, given that the package was put together by the folks at Do Right Records, easily one of the greatest sources for modern soulful records from Canada! The package gives long overdue respect to these key jazz gems, and is filled with tons of great moments that maybe even go past the strength of volume one! Titles include "Perception" by Nick Ayoub, "Ton Visage" by Yvan Landtry Trio, "Atlantic Rising" by Sunship Ensemble, "Melancholy" by Alvinn Pall Sextet, "Hidden Strength" by Ted Moses Quintet, "Greek Street Break In" by Sakik Hakim, "Beloved Gift" by Bernie Senesky Trio, "Mas Que Nada" by Emil Normand Sextet, "Quebec On My Mind" by Billy Robinson, and "Maiera" by Fred Stone. Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the coolest Christmas compilations we've seen in years – a package that's filled with rare funk and soul singles from the 60s and 70s – all of which have a Holiday theme! Almost all the tunes on the set are original numbers – which means that the songs are totally fresh, and not just reworked versions of Christmas standards – and all the tracks come from tiny independent labels, which means there's an extra gritty edge to the whole thing – hardly the sort of sleepy Christmas record you might know from your youth! The funky 45 label Tramp put the whole thing together, with the same energy they usually bring to 7" vinyl – and titles include "Black Christmas" by Rose Graham, "Christmas Day" by Detroit Jr, "You Won't Have To Wait Till Xmas" by Lee Rogers, "Santa's Got A Brand New Bag" by Gary Walker, "Holiday Baby" by Fat Daddy, "Xmas Done Got Funky" by Jimmy Jules & The Nuclear Sound System, "Christmas Groove" by Vernon Garrett, "Soul Christmas" by Count Sidney & His Dukes, and "Stone Soul Christmas" by Binky Griptite. Clarke Boland Big BandAt Her Majesty's Pleasure ... LP
Black Lion, 1969. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest long-form albums from the Clarke Boland Big Band – a sophisticated suite that not only shows off the writing ability of Francy Boland, but also demonstrates the group's ability to swing like a mofo, even when things are serious! The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight". LP, Vinyl record album

Vertigo/Universal (UK), 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest rock concept albums ever – and arguably the crowning moment for Aphrodite's Child – an incredibly hip Greek group from the early 70s – featuring a young Demis Roussos on vocals, and Vangelis Papathanassiou on organ, piano, vibes, flute, and a lot of other instrumentation! Vangelis composed the whole set – as an extended piece based on the Apocalypse of St John – and the album was recorded in Paris, away from their native Greece – in a time of political unrest and cultural upheaval that's clearly referenced in the music! There's a really wide array of textures and moods on the set – from sinister to soft, freaky to peaceful, all laid out beautifully with a sense of poetry and power that few other groups could match! Irene Pappas performs a recitation, and also gives some sexy sounds on the classic "Infinity" – and other tunes include "The System", "Babylon", "Loud Loud Loud", "The Four Horsemen", "The Seventh Seal", "Aegian Sea", "The Marching Beast", "Capture Of The Beast", "Altamont", "Seven Trumpets", and "Hic Et Nunc". Schema (Italy), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublime bossa groovers from Italy! The first volume of this series was one of our favorite compilations that year it was released – and this second volume is equally as great! Schema groover Gerardo Frisina serves up a hand-picked batch of 16 tunes, mostly classic numbers from the late 60s and early 70s, pulled from the ranks of Italian soundtrack, jazz, and easy listening albums – all with a flair for making the bossa even groovier than it already is! Electric keyboards abound – and the rhythms run from dreamy to driving to slightly funky, always at the right pace for the material, and always making the set dance with delight! Titles include "Incontro All'Aereoporto" by Piero Piccioni, "Allora, Il Treno" by Bruno Nicolai & Edda Dell'Orso, "Avances" by Gerardo Frisina, "Wind" by Red Redford Sound System One, "Bossalonga" by Mustang, "Unreality Landscape" by Angel Pocho Gatti, "Susan Theme" by Daniele Patucchi, "Per Lei" by Stefano Torossi, and "Colpa Tua" by Giancarlo Gazzani. Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Raw sound, indeed – and possibly one of the most hard-hitting compilations so far from the Analog Africa label! There's a quality here that's mighty fresh, and which shows us that there's still plenty of African nuggets to find, if you know where to dig! Much of the music has a dark, moody quality that's really striking – still the grooves you'd expect, but an exotic undercurrent that's almost like Ethiopian music – although very much it's own vibe too! The mix is really wonderful, and makes these tracks from Burkina Faso a rich musical discovery – one that's very thoughtfully put together by the Analog Africa label, with their usual strong attention to sound and detailed notes – not to mention a very handsome package. Titles include " Kabendo" by Konde Mangue, "Sie Koumgolo" by Coulibaly Tidini, "Rog Mik Africa" by Orchestre CVD, "Kodjougou" by Abdoulaye Ciess, "Dambakale" by Compaore Issouf, "Tink Tank" by Afro Soul System, "Love Music & Dance" by Mamo Lagbema, and "Johnny" by Amadou Ballake Et Super Volta. Roberta Flack sounding freshly inspired in the late 80s – her first new album in years – and it's a really strong one! The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". Plastic Strip Press (Norway), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the funkiest grooves we've ever heard from the European scene – all tracks from the late 60s and early 70s, recorded as part of the legendary Club 7 in Oslo! Although of Norwegian origin, most of these numbers lean heavily towards American funky styles of soul and jazz at the end of the 60s – grooves that are loose and free, and which often feature some surprisingly great English language vocals – some sung by American soulster Earl Wilson, who was part of the scene at the time, and a key influence on most of the grooves here. The package is a real discovery for our ears – and given that most of these numbers were recorded by the Norwegian broadcasting system for radio play, they weren't really issued publicly at the time – making this collection almost a "sound library soul" set! Titles include "Whole Lotta Love", "Hot Pants", "Come On Children", "Them Changes", and "Moment Of Truth" by The Band No Name; "Groovin" by Karin Krog & Fred Noddelund, "Lite Lite" and "Tamma Song" by Tamma, "Night IN Barcelona" and "Oslo Late July" by Kjellerrock Jazzbandet, "California Soul" and "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream" by Geir Wentzel's Orkester, and "Otinku" by Modern Sound Quintet. Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. The most massive book of record art we've ever stocked – and a groundbreaking look at the art of reggae 45s, put together by the folks at Soul Jazz Records! Albums are usually featured in a book like this, but the authors do a great job of illustrating the diversity of 45 labels on the Jamaican scene – the wealth of designs and colors that make collecting reggae 45s a past time that's almost as pleasing from a visual perspective as it is from an audio one! Plus, given the obscurity of most of these records, the book's even more valuable – a much-needed record of these small pressings that never got much distribution – laid out here in beautiful full color images. The book is super-heavy, with a cool cover that's between a hardcover and soft cover – and almost 500 pages of images throughout! Book

New Stuart Baker & Steve BarrowReggae Soundsystem – Original Reggae Album Cover Art (hardcover) ... Book
Soul Jazz (UK), 2012. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
Amazing images galore – some classic covers from the Jamaican scene of the 60s and 70s, and lots more obscure images too – all presented in very vivid color, with a lot more clarity than any of the beat up original copies we have in our collection! The book really does full justice to the visual side of the reggae scene – and brings together a huge amount of covers we've never seen before, with others that look way more vibrant here than on a tiny CD reissue – presented in this record-shaped book that reminds us why albums always look so great in the racks! Most images are overflowing with color – really beautiful reproductions – and the oversized book is hardcover, and almost 240 pages overall. Book

New VariousElectroconvulsive Therapy Vol 1 (180 gram splatter vinyl) ... LP
Medical, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer collection of early 80s electronic numbers – most of them in a post-punk sort of style, but often with a bit of a dancefloor groove as well! Most of these cuts were issued only on rare 7" singles – and are brought together here by the wonderful talents of Medical Records – a label we've really come to trust for obscure 80s electronica! The work here lies in an underground far below the best early material of artists like Cabaret Voltaire or Human League – and the package brings together cuts from both sides of the Atlantic, all material we'd never have heard otherwise (and we actually used to buy this sort of stuff, back in the day!) Titles include "The Future Now" by Psychic Youth, "Let's Get Together" by Shazam, "Kwai Systeme" by Arto, "Le Chorale" by The Electronic Circus, "Betty Boop" by Arto, "Maske" by Berliner Strasse, and "Duty Calls" by Aaah. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition – pressed on totally cool vinyl!)

New VariousStrange Games & Funky Things 5 Smoking 70s Soul & Rare Grooves – DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem ... CD
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest installments so far in this legendary series – an excellent back of laidback funky cuts – super-sweet stuff, with a great lowdown sort of groove! The rhythms here are all nice and mellow, but the cuts are still plenty funky – right at the right sort of pace to be the kind of older funk numbers that inspire the hip hop generation – usually with a different sort of sound than the 70s funk that was hitting the mainstream back in the day! Spinna's done a great job with the track selection here – proving that even if you're digging in familiar territory, picking the right cuts is still a hell of an art – and the CD version features one mixed disc, and one unmixed CD – with cuts that include "Family Tree" by Family Tree, "Get It Up For Love" by Ned Doheny, "Sweet Stuff" by Sylvia, "Capricorn Rising" by Richard Evans, "Motherland" by Sylvia St James, "Cameo" by Eddie Senay, "For The Love Of Money" by Philly Armada Orchestra, "Brazilian Skies" by Bill Summers, "Asafo Beesuon/Obaa Yaa Aye Me Bone" by CK Mann & His Carousel 7, "Hunt Up Wind" by Hiroshi Fukimura, "Always There" by Wood Brass & Steel, "War Is Coming" by War, "Hands Of Time" by Perfect Circle, and "I Ain't Got The Love" by The Ambassadors. New Felix KubinZemsta Plutona ... CD
Omni (Australia), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Felix Kubin looks a lot like an alien on the cover of this set – and sounds a fair bit like a space visitor in the music as well! The work's got this very cool blend of electronics and playful rhythms – served up in a style that really takes us back to some of our favorite German work of the post-punk years – particularly the music of Der Plan and Pyrolator, both of whom would be a great comparison to Kubin's work! The tunes are catchy and playful, but also have this undercurrent of darkness too – and loads of analogue elements that bristle and crackle in this very cool way – like you've tapped into some spaceship out in the ether, and are able to unload all the grooves going on in their soundsystem. Titles include "Restez En Ligne", "Zemsta Plutona", "Swinging 40s", "Lightning Strikes", "Atomium Vertigo", and "Nachts Im Park". CD
