Lou Champagne SystemNo Visible Means (180 gram white vinyl pressing – limited, numbered) ... LP
Pterodactyl/Medical, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
Nasty electro punk from the enigmatic Lou Champagne – an obscure early 80s effort issue on Lou's own record label, but a killer cooker that would have shook the New York scene up plenty – had Champagne been working in the Big Apple at the time! There's a dark blend of analogue electronics and punkish sensibilities that almost reminds us of Suicide at their best – and the album's certainly a great companion to their classic first album – although at points, Lou's handling of various waveforms is almost even more deft – creating a sinister sensibility that really makes this one hold up strongly over the years! Titles include "Do Something", "Machine Muzik", "Invisible Prisons", "Another Dimension", "Silent Walking", and "Broken Hearts". LP, Vinyl record album

New Dead MoonCrack In The System ... LP
Mississippi, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A timeless treasure from Dead Moon – a record that could have been made as far back as the late 70s scene in New York, or the mid 80s in the UK, or even in the recent American underground – but which stands as one of the key primal offering from this 90s Portland trio! The music wraps up so many different lost strands of guitar-based influence – garagey bits, punky bits, and folksy bits – all with a style that's never posturing, but almost has the emotional power of early Replacements at their best. Titles include "It's OK", "The Deadline", "Too Far Gone", "Cast Will Change", "Poor Born", and "Two Fell Away". LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Gross/Ari Y KelmanIs Diss A System? – A Milt Gross Comic Reader (hardcover) ... Book
New York University Press, Mid 20s/2009. New Copy ... $5.99 35.00
A wonderful look at the early work of Milt Gross – a cartoonist who was to the printed page what Mickey Katz was to records! Like Katz, Gross drew a lot of his humor from Yiddish culture – especially the clash between the old and the new in the community of New York's Jewish immigrants – a community of which the Bronx-born Gross was a part, and was able to examine with a humorist eye rivaling that of Mark Twain or Will Rogers in their own sides of the American scene. And while Gross was a hell of a cartoonist, with a style that was increasingly insane over the years – this edition looks at his illustrated books of the 20s – with a long introduction to situate the material, then selections from the books Nize Baby, De Night In De Front From Chreesmas, Hiawatta, Dunk Esk, and Famous Fimmales. The book is 292 pages, hardcover, and filled with black and white illustrations. Book

New Herbie HancockSound System ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Very Good ... $2.99
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that continue the electro feel, but also add in a peppering of Bill Laswell's world music interest. The album's worth it alone for the presence of D St on a few tracks – and titles include "Hardrock", "Metal Beat", "Karabali", "Junku", "People Are Changing" and "Sound System". Millie JacksonGet It Outcha System ... LP
Spring, 1978. Very Good- ... $1.99
A key album in the evolution of the Millie Jackson sound and style – as she leaves behind the weepy soul of earlier albums, and moves into the fierce, proud-stepping mode that would define the "bad girl" of later, raunchier years! In case you can't figure out where Millie's going with her bag, the title is emphasized by a photo of a toilet seat on the back cover – and Millie literally takes the sh*t out on the record – in a series of tunes that have a real bad-rapping approach. Production is by longtime associate Brad Shapiro, but the overall sound is sweetened nicely by David Van De Pitte – who adds in full strings and voices to emphasize the attitude behind the songs. Titles include "Go Out & Get Some", "Put Something Down On It", "He Wants To Hear The Words", "Here You Come Again", and a great version of Latimore's "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", complete with an additional rap on the subject, entitle "Logs & Thangs". Ennio MorriconeStark System ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99
Stark sounds from Ennio Morricone – a moody soundtrack from the start of the 80s, and a bit obscure in the Morricone canon – but also a real overlooked gem that's got a feel that's quite different from some of the maestro's bigger work of the time! There's a spare, stepping quality to some of the best tunes here – jagged rhythms that move with weird sonic touches, at a level that's like some of Morricone's coolest thrillers from the early 70s Italian scene – a really surprising return to a style we love so much, especially at a time when Ennio was using larger orchestrations for so many other films. There's a bracing feel to the music that holds on throughout – and titles include "Stark System", "Fantasmi Grotteschi", "Umor Giallo", and other variations. CD also features 8 more bonus tracks as well! CD

Coolin SystemRefrigerate After Opening ... CD
GED Soul, New Copy ... Around August 15, 2014 (delayed)
No need to refrigerate this great little set – as room temperature's only going to make the whole thing even funkier over time! The Coolin System are hotter than ever here – not only tighter on the instrumental tip than we remember, but also picking up some much deeper influences from the 60s – including a touch of trumpet inspiration from Blue Mitchell, killer keyboards from Cedar Walton, and a blast of Brazilian funk from Som Tres! These guys use all the best elements to rework a small combo funky sound way past the usual – and the all-instrumental set unfurls some sweet lines on Fender Rhodes, Hammond, trumpet, tenor, and flute – on cuts that include "Beyond Mobius", "Homenagem A Mongo", "Blue Juice", "Soul Village", "Funky Mule", "Soul Thing", and "Jungle Juice". New Jack McDuffHeatin' System ... LP
Cadet, 1972. Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
One of the most amazing, expansive albums ever recorded by Brother Jack McDuff – a session that we'd rank right up there with his classic Moon Rappin for Blue Note – and which has an equally stretched out feel! Although some of Jack's other albums for Cadet in the 70s have a bit more of a keyboard-centric feel, this album's heavy on Hammond all the way through – played by McDuff with sharp edges, soaring solos, and that amazing sense of timing that few other players could match! But possibly even more amazing is the group on the set – a hip batch of cats who include Phil Upchurch and Sam Jones on bass, Don Myrick and Dave Young on tenor and flute, Bobby Alston on trumpet, Marty Roberts on guitar, and Derf Reklaw on percussion – all working wonderfully with McDuff arrangements on some very long tunes! The double-length nature of the 2LP record really lets the group stretch out nicely – and there's a tremendous sense of energy throughout – almost a mode that matches Charles Earland's Leaving This Planet album. Titles include "Ain't No Sunshine", "Radiation", "The Prophet", "The Boiler", "Pressure Gauge", "The Heatin System", "Elmo Tucker", and "Lonesome Is The Night". LP, Vinyl record album

Heavy psych from Detroit, in the years before Bob Seger became a "lighters in the air" peddler of redneck theme songs. Cut from the same cloth as the early Mitch Ryder, Amboy Dukes and Grand Funk that were the hallmark of the Motor City rock sound of the day, most of the tracks on this outing are concise rockers, but the band delves into a bit of nice jamminess on side 2. Includes 'Tales Of Lucy Blue", "Ivory", "Gone Down Home", "Train Man", "White Wall", "Black Eyed Girl", "2 + 2 = ?" and "Doctor Fine". LP, Vinyl record album

Ropeadope, 2014. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
An Afro Funk combo, but with a difference! The group's got a strong female vocal presence upfront, and also really knows how to build a tune – mixing together classic rhythms with some inventive keyboard and horn solos – surging strongly forward on "Bella Ciao", a 21st Century version of the kind of longform jam you'd hear on a vintage Fela album! "DON" is moodier and dubbier – almost a post-punk kind of take on Afro Funk – with dark elements in the background at many points, as if Martin Hannett was production! LP, Vinyl record album

New Coolin SystemCoolin System ... CD
GED Soul, 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Cool jazz funk from The Coolin' System – a group that lays out a funky backdrop, and one that actually generates plenty of heat despite the group's name! Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, bass, drums and percussion bring the funk, along with a vamping guitar – but what we love about this record is all the measured out space that the group provides from some really sweet solos all around. It adds a late 60s-styled jazz funk vibe that's not easy to pull off, but everyone in this group can play, and they make it seem easy. Players include Mikie Martel on trumpet & flugelhorn, JD Douglas on tenor sax and flute, Pablo Ahogado on Hammond and Rhodes, David Guy on bass, James Bonomo on drums and Andy Wilmoth on percussion. AJ Eason provides guest vocals on "I Need Some Money", but for the most part it's a cool instrumentals set, and titles include "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", "Red Onion", "Sunshine Alley", "Roots", "Sweet Honey Bee", "Nubian Lady", "Smokin' At Tiffany's" and more. Clarke Boland Big BandAt Her Majesty's Pleasure ... LP
Black Lion, 1969. Very Good+ ... $5.99
One of the greatest long-form albums from the Clarke Boland Big Band – a sophisticated suite that not only shows off the writing ability of Francy Boland, but also demonstrates the group's ability to swing like a mofo, even when things are serious! The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight". LP, Vinyl record album

FelaBest Of The Black President 2 (deluxe edition with bonus DVD) ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1970s. New Copy CD & DVD ... $16.99 24.98
Hard to go wrong with a set like this – because in our opinion, just about every track recorded by Fela is a "best" – which makes the collection a massive batch of goodness all the way through! Every track here is presented in its original extended version – a dozen massive slices of Afro Funk, which packaged together equal the equivalent of at least 5 or 6 separate albums by Fela – another factor that makes the collection a great one! The 2CD set is filled with gems that helped redefine the sound of funk, soul, and world music back in the 70s – titles that include "Monkey Banana", "Everything Scatter", "Expensive Sh*t", "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am", "Underground System (part 2)", "Sorry Tears & Blood", "Colonial Mentality", "Yellow Fever", "He Miss Road", "Black Man's Cry", "Mr Follow Follow", and "Na Poi". Dick HymanSensuous Piano Of D ... LP
Project 3, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $4.99
A sparkling set of piano instrumentals from Dick Hyman – not electric or moogy at all, despite the date – and often recorded with some weird overdubbing that's almost in a Ferrante & Teicher style! Hyman's keyboard work here is often highly virtuostic – hardly the laidback styles you'd expect from the "sensuous" title – but music that still might sound pretty great on a hi-fi system when seducing a stewardess! Titles include "Love Story", "El Condor Pasa", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Fire & Rain", "Koto Prelude", "Big Yellow Taxi", and "Far Away Friend". LP, Vinyl record album

New MazeMaze ... LP
Capitol, 1977. Near Mint- ... $8.99
An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years before the album came out – which is why he's so perfectly formed at the start. And like Maurice White, another soul star who spent many years woodshedding all over the place before hitting the majors, Frankie has the talent to lead the group to a unique place in the star system of soul – a unique orbit that was important to mellow soul as Earth Wind & Fire's was to funk. The record features some unbelievably amazing numbers, gems that shine again year after year, no matter where you hear them – on an AM radio, a crusty old tape in a car stereo, or bursting out of the grooves of this beautiful LP. Great ones include the sublime stepper "Happy Feelin's", the smooth mellow groover "While I'm Alone", and the tightly compressed "Look At California". LP, Vinyl record album

Great stuff, with a gritty funky feel that's hard to match. LP, Vinyl record album

VPI 16.5Amazing Record Cleaning Machine! (115 Volt Version) ... Misc
VPI, 2004. New Copy ... $649.99 699.99
Ever wonder how we get our records so clean at Dusty Groove? Well, it's because we've been using this amazing machine for years, and we'll swear by it always as the best way to clean up those old albums you find while diggin' through the crates. The long-tested VPI system is in place with record dealers, collectors, and audiophiles everywhere – and it's even used by the Smithsonian Institute for the albums they have in their archive! The process is simple, but extremely effective: the record is bathed in a special fluid, scrubbed by a special brush to loosen all dirt and debris, and then the whole thing's vacuumed up to remove the fluid dirt and all! We know the machine's a bit pricey, and we balked a bit when we bought our first one. Now, though, we own 3 of them, and we think every penny was very well spent. We can't recommend the machine highly enough, and if you ever need a demonstration, just look at one of the very clean records you've bought from us! (The shipping price will be a bit more than usual, and we'll give you a quote when you order, but at least you won't have to pay sales tax on the whole thing.) Misc
(Please Note: unlike other items we carry, this one is not actually in stock. We need to special order it for you, but we usually get them in a month.)

VariousReady Or Not Vol 2 – Deep Jazz Grooves From The CBC Radio Canada Archives ... CD
Do Right (Canada), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99
A second fantastic dip into the jazz archives of the Canadian Broadcasting System – home to a heck of a lot more great music than you might think! Since Canada never had great labels like Blue Note or Prestige back in the day, many of the country's best jazz players often recorded for broadcast – cutting some incredible work that was often as good as most of the US jazz of the same period, but which never got the same sort of mainstream exposure. But exposed or not, the music is totally great – and often in modal or groove-heavy styles here – no surprise, given that the package was put together by the folks at Do Right Records, easily one of the greatest sources for modern soulful records from Canada! The package gives long overdue respect to these key jazz gems, and is filled with tons of great moments that maybe even go past the strength of volume one! Titles include "Perception" by Nick Ayoub, "Ton Visage" by Yvan Landtry Trio, "Atlantic Rising" by Sunship Ensemble, "Melancholy" by Alvinn Pall Sextet, "Hidden Strength" by Ted Moses Quintet, "Greek Street Break In" by Sakik Hakim, "Beloved Gift" by Bernie Senesky Trio, "Mas Que Nada" by Emil Normand Sextet, "Quebec On My Mind" by Billy Robinson, and "Maiera" by Fred Stone. Vertigo/Universal (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Around September 1, 2014 (delayed)
One of the coolest rock concept albums ever – and arguably the crowning moment for Aphrodite's Child – an incredibly hip Greek group from the early 70s – featuring a young Demis Roussos on vocals, and Vangelis Papathanassiou on organ, piano, vibes, flute, and a lot of other instrumentation! Vangelis composed the whole set – as an extended piece based on the Apocalypse of St John – and the album was recorded in Paris, away from their native Greece – in a time of political unrest and cultural upheaval that's clearly referenced in the music! There's a really wide array of textures and moods on the set – from sinister to soft, freaky to peaceful, all laid out beautifully with a sense of poetry and power that few other groups could match! Irene Pappas performs a recitation, and also gives some sexy sounds on the classic "Infinity" – and other tunes include "The System", "Babylon", "Loud Loud Loud", "The Four Horsemen", "The Seventh Seal", "Aegian Sea", "The Marching Beast", "Capture Of The Beast", "Altamont", "Seven Trumpets", and "Hic Et Nunc". Alexander's always been a hell of a straight ahead talent on the tenor, but here he's almost hitting a few more modern modes at times – not "out" in his soloing, but a bit more free thinking in the overall construction and execution of the tunes – willing to change things up a bit in the rhythms, and give the record even more freshness than we might have expected. Alexander's easily one of the greatest living talents in jazz recording today – and we're already huge fans of his work – but he's won us over even more with this set, and a few of the chances he takes on some of the tunes. The group's a well-matched batch of regulars – including Jim Rotondi on trumpet, David Hazeltine on piano, Nat Reeves on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and titles include "The Temple Of Olympic Zeus", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Lucas Too", "Blues For David", "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life", "I'll Keep Loving You", and "Dave's System". New Sid BassFrom Another World ... LP
Vik, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool bit of space age bachelor pad music from Sid Bass – one of the best RCA arrangers of the late 50s! Although the set features no electronics, it does have a lot of cool instrumental arrangements designed to create a very "outerspace" feel – and regular instruments are filtered through a system of reverberation that takes the echoes and makes them sound like early electronics! The cover's got a model in a space helmet, surrounded by a lot of squiggles and lines, for a nice spacey look – and the tracks are mostly standards, rearranged to fit with the style of the album, with a cool space-age sound done through the use of guitar, horns, vibes, and piano, all worked through the echoey system! Titles include "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise", "Old Devil Moon", "Out Of Nowhere", "From Another World", and "Beyond The Blue Horizon". LP, Vinyl record album

New East West Connection featuring Maiya JamesFind A Way EP ... 12-inch
Chilli Funk (UK), 2001. Used (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soulful house from the London underground – featuring some great vocals by Maiya James, and excellent production all around from the team of Lofty and Dr Bob Jones! "Find A Way" is a the jazzy midtempo groover that kicks off the 4 track ep – riffing away with a bit of guitar and keyboards under Maiya's vocals. "Thinking Of Grover" is up next – a sax-based house tune with an obvious nod to Grover Washington Jr. "Tomorrow In Your Eyes" is a bit weaker – dubbed up a bit too much by Dubtribe Sound System on the bassline, but with some nice keyboards that redeem the cut on the top. "East Of West 5" ends the set – in the jazzy house mode that first made us sit up and notice these guys! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A massive exploration of the music of Kashmere Stage Band – the legendary Texas funk combo whose work has been pushed heavily over the years by Wax Poetics, Stones Throw, and many others! The double-length set goes even deeper than any of the vinyl reissues of work by the group – and features some previously unreleased tracks, alternate takes on their funkiest numbers, and a full 10 extra live tracks never heard before! The Kashmere groove is incredible – blasting horns, scratchy guitars, and funky drums – all wrapped super-tight around a range of original material and some more familiar numbers – all recast here in super-heavy funk mode! Another mighty batch of dubness from Pressure Sounds! Delta Acoustic/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the darkest concept albums we've ever heard – a set dedicated to creation and the "planet of man" – but really just an amazing experiment in sound! Manfred Schunke put the record together to explore his "artificial head" recording system – and it's got this incredible stereo interplay throughout – sometimes weird sounds leaping back and forth from speaker to speaker, sometimes these loud industrial noises looming from each – and creating this richly organic feeling of sound and soil! There's vocals on the set – some sung, some spoken – but most of the music is heavy on echo, noise, textures, and tones – at a sonic level that's more striking than most experiments to follow! Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Raw sound, indeed – and possibly one of the most hard-hitting compilations so far from the Analog Africa label! There's a quality here that's mighty fresh, and which shows us that there's still plenty of African nuggets to find, if you know where to dig! Much of the music has a dark, moody quality that's really striking – still the grooves you'd expect, but an exotic undercurrent that's almost like Ethiopian music – although very much it's own vibe too! The mix is really wonderful, and makes these tracks from Burkina Faso a rich musical discovery – one that's very thoughtfully put together by the Analog Africa label, with their usual strong attention to sound and detailed notes – not to mention a very handsome package. Titles include " Kabendo" by Konde Mangue, "Sie Koumgolo" by Coulibaly Tidini, "Rog Mik Africa" by Orchestre CVD, "Kodjougou" by Abdoulaye Ciess, "Dambakale" by Compaore Issouf, "Tink Tank" by Afro Soul System, "Love Music & Dance" by Mamo Lagbema, and "Johnny" by Amadou Ballake Et Super Volta. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 80s/1990s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
That's not a baby floating in the water on the cover, and the set's not a batch of familiar Nirvana or Sub Pop sounds – but instead a very well-done collection that gets at the much deeper scene in the Pacific Northwest during the late 80s and early 90s! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of fuzzy guitars and balls-out action on most of these tracks – but the overall execution is less standard, more unusual, and has a gritty, garagey intensity that so many of the bigger Seattle acts lost right away. And even though we lived through that time (and yes, bought our share of the records, too), there's still plenty here we'd never heard before – which is really saying a lot to the archive-digging crew at Soul Jazz! Titles include "This Town" by Starfish, "Windyy" by Nubbin, "Jail Ain't Stoppin Us" by Saucer, "Same 18" by Hitting Birth, "Beverly" by Medelicious, "Blind Man's Holiday" by Machine, "Woodstock Unvisited" by Crunchbird, "123" by Pod, "Take Me For A Ride" by Yellow Snow, "The System" by Attica, "Run Around" by Starfish, "Wench" by Bundle Of Hiss, "Fields" by Chemistry Set, "Bleed" by Thrillhammer, "AM FM" by Shug, "It's Getting Late" by Small Stars, "It Smiles" by Soylent Green, and "Debbie Had A Dream" by Treehouse. The first thing that jumps out at us is how wonderful her voice continues to be –she's recognizable from the first syllable, and it's right it home with a contemporary sound – though classical soul-inclined – thanks to smart production and arrangements by Marcus Miller, Jerry Hey and Michael Omartian. There's a little bit of a tropical vibe in couple places – hence the title – especially the opening and closing tunes "Oasis" and "(His Name) Brazil" – and other cuts include the nice and hooky Ashford & Simpson tune "Uh-Uh-Ooh Look Out (Here It Comes)", plus "All Caught Up In Love", "Shock To My System", "You Who Brought Me Love", "And So It Goes", "Something Magic". Plastic Strip Press (Norway), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the funkiest grooves we've ever heard from the European scene – all tracks from the late 60s and early 70s, recorded as part of the legendary Club 7 in Oslo! Although of Norwegian origin, most of these numbers lean heavily towards American funky styles of soul and jazz at the end of the 60s – grooves that are loose and free, and which often feature some surprisingly great English language vocals – some sung by American soulster Earl Wilson, who was part of the scene at the time, and a key influence on most of the grooves here. The package is a real discovery for our ears – and given that most of these numbers were recorded by the Norwegian broadcasting system for radio play, they weren't really issued publicly at the time – making this collection almost a "sound library soul" set! Titles include "Whole Lotta Love", "Hot Pants", "Come On Children", "Them Changes", and "Moment Of Truth" by The Band No Name; "Groovin" by Karin Krog & Fred Noddelund, "Lite Lite" and "Tamma Song" by Tamma, "Night IN Barcelona" and "Oslo Late July" by Kjellerrock Jazzbandet, "California Soul" and "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream" by Geir Wentzel's Orkester, and "Otinku" by Modern Sound Quintet. The most massive book of record art we've ever stocked – and a groundbreaking look at the art of reggae 45s, put together by the folks at Soul Jazz Records! Albums are usually featured in a book like this, but the authors do a great job of illustrating the diversity of 45 labels on the Jamaican scene – the wealth of designs and colors that make collecting reggae 45s a past time that's almost as pleasing from a visual perspective as it is from an audio one! Plus, given the obscurity of most of these records, the book's even more valuable – a much-needed record of these small pressings that never got much distribution – laid out here in beautiful full color images. The book is super-heavy, with a cool cover that's between a hardcover and soft cover – and almost 500 pages of images throughout! Book

Blood & Fire (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... $22.99
An augmented reissue of the classic Revelation Time LP, by this roots singer who got his start singing lover's tunes and novelty cuts for the sound systems. By the time he'd begun recording the tracks that were to make up this recording though, he had become fully ensconced in Socialist ideology and the Rasta faith, so you can imagine this is not too far from Burning Spear's Social Living, at least in it's lyrical content. Though he'd also worked with the great Bunny Lee, many of the tracks here were done with Lee Perry with whom Max would go on to later collaborate on further classics, like the War Inna Babylon set. A number of the tracks here had been cut as sides for the Upsetter label, and have that skanking, funky reggae the Upsetters were famous for as the rhythm tracks. Includes "Blood of the Prophet Parts 1 & 2", "Open the Iron Gate Parts 1 & 2", "Melt Away (12" version)", "Three Blind Mice" and "Valley of Jehosaphat". CD

Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. A killer collection of early 80s electronic numbers – most of them in a post-punk sort of style, but often with a bit of a dancefloor groove as well! BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest installments so far in this legendary series – an excellent back of laidback funky cuts – super-sweet stuff, with a great lowdown sort of groove! The rhythms here are all nice and mellow, but the cuts are still plenty funky – right at the right sort of pace to be the kind of older funk numbers that inspire the hip hop generation – usually with a different sort of sound than the 70s funk that was hitting the mainstream back in the day! Spinna's done a great job with the track selection here – proving that even if you're digging in familiar territory, picking the right cuts is still a hell of an art – and the CD version features one mixed disc, and one unmixed CD – with cuts that include "Family Tree" by Family Tree, "Get It Up For Love" by Ned Doheny, "Sweet Stuff" by Sylvia, "Capricorn Rising" by Richard Evans, "Motherland" by Sylvia St James, "Cameo" by Eddie Senay, "For The Love Of Money" by Philly Armada Orchestra, "Brazilian Skies" by Bill Summers, "Asafo Beesuon/Obaa Yaa Aye Me Bone" by CK Mann & His Carousel 7, "Hunt Up Wind" by Hiroshi Fukimura, "Always There" by Wood Brass & Steel, "War Is Coming" by War, "Hands Of Time" by Perfect Circle, and "I Ain't Got The Love" by The Ambassadors. The music here isn't the trendy, intellectual style coming from Brazil in recent years – but instead the sort that plays big at house parties, underground clubs, and even street festivals where the booming beats are a perfect match for a well-crafted soundsystem! In fact, the sound here is so heavy, you might want to turn down the bass a bit on your stereo before playback – lest you blast the dishes off your shelves in the kitchen. Titles include "Vai Danada" by Guto De Almeida, "Saca Me Desse Banze" by Gato Preto, "Cicadas' Dance" by Chuck Upbeat, "Gostoso" by Ophex, and "Xao Trap" by DJ Comrade. LP, Vinyl record album

New Augustus PabloKing Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown ... LP
Clocktower, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Truly one of the most essential reggae albums of all time, and without a doubt one of our top dub albums. While we may be known for our hyperbolic comments on LPs here at Dusty, this album is very much deserving of the praise, and if you don't own it, you need to. Basically a collection of dubs of rhythms for some of Pablo's most popular productions as vocal cuts on 45s that had rocked the sound systems, this set features a mighty rockers rhythm team and mixing courtesy Errol Thompson and King Tubby. All solid tracks. Includes "Keep On Dubbing", "Stop Them Jah", "Young Generation Dub", "Each One Dub", "555 Dub Street", "Braces Tower Dub", "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", "Corner Crew Dub", "Say So", "Skanking Dub" "Satta Dub" and "Frozen Dub". New VariousDiscotech ... LP
Electunes (Austria), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great batch of spare, spacey club cuts – every bit as electronic as you might expect from the "tech" in the title! Most numbers are in a space between cosmic disco and colder electronics – kind of a post-prog European groove that really sounds great when represented by work this strong – a small sub-chapter in the sound of the dancefloor back in the day, but one that's definitely worth rediscovering! Imagine Kraftwerk tuned a bit more for the dancefloor, and you've got part of the feel of these cuts. LP features tracks that include "Pitch Control" by Moebius Plank Neumayer, "Chinatown" by Tom Ware, "Mambopolis" by Richard Bone, "Electric Lady" by JYL, "Systems Breaking Down" by Anna, and "4:08 To Paris" by Berlin Express. New Felix KubinZemsta Plutona ... CD
Omni (Australia), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Felix Kubin looks a lot like an alien on the cover of this set – and sounds a fair bit like a space visitor in the music as well! The work's got this very cool blend of electronics and playful rhythms – served up in a style that really takes us back to some of our favorite German work of the post-punk years – particularly the music of Der Plan and Pyrolator, both of whom would be a great comparison to Kubin's work! The tunes are catchy and playful, but also have this undercurrent of darkness too – and loads of analogue elements that bristle and crackle in this very cool way – like you've tapped into some spaceship out in the ether, and are able to unload all the grooves going on in their soundsystem. Titles include "Restez En Ligne", "Zemsta Plutona", "Swinging 40s", "Lightning Strikes", "Atomium Vertigo", and "Nachts Im Park". CD

New VariousBest Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem – Part A ... LP
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Titles on this first part of the vinyl edition include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, and "One Life" by The Albert.
