✨✧ SouliveTurn It Out ... LP
Velour/Vintage League, 1999. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
New York is what is funky! This is a killer new release by a small organ jazz combo from the Big Apple – and they are definitely worthy members of the city's great end-of-the century funk scene that includes Medeski Martin & Wood, Sugarman Three, and The Other Side! The band have certainly spent plenty of time getting their chops up – and they have a very tight organ/guitar sound with a totally live feel to it. The overall groove is right up there with the best classic combos on Prestige – with stone cold funky drumming underneath sweetly strident lines on the Hammond, and some very heavy guitar rhythm parts. In a way, the record really evokes the heavy funk sound of Lonnie Smith's fantastic Blue Note sides from the Late 60s – with a very heavy drum sound nicely kicking it live! The CD's their first – and believe us, it will more than break them out of the box. Tracks include "Arruga De Agua", "Doin Something", "Rudy's Way", "Azucar", and "Steppin". Great stuff – and the kind of small-group recording that makes it worth shopping at Dusty Groove! Plus, this is the new remastered version of the CD – featuring 2 bonus cuts that weren't on the original release! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SouliveBreak Out ... CD
Concord, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
A well-titled set, given that the album is Soulive's first away from the Blue Note label – a surprisingly tight outing done for the mostly-mellow Concord imprint, and a real back-to-basics outing that we totally love! The group's in fine fine form for the record – working with that core classic intensity that we first loved way back in their indie years – an approach that's gotten a bit too overly jamming or muddled up on other records, and which is presented here in a nicely stripped-down approach that only adds in a bit of extra guest work from time to time. Reggie Watts, Chaka Khan, and Ivan Neville all make appearances on the record – but honestly, what we still love best is the record's core grooving from the trio of Evans, Krasno, and Evans. Hate the cover, though – but whaddayagonnado? Titles include some great short "Interlude" tracks, plus "Got Soul", "Reverb", "Break Out", "She's Hooked", "Freedom", "What Can You Do", "Vapor", and "Take It Easy". CD

✨✧ SouliveSoulive ... CD
Blue Note, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Evans, Evans and Krasno continue their groovy update of the classic B-3 organ trio lineup of drums, guitar and organ with another dose of tasty fat jazzy flavors, recorded live on tour. With all the raw energy and deep soulful funk you'd expect from a Soulive show, this set cooks nicely from start to finish, whether it's the hard funk of "Aladdin", bubbling wah wah grooves of "El Ron", jazzy swing of "Turn It Out" or the slow burning blues of "Lenny". 9 nicely stretched out tracks in all! ✨✧ SouliveTurn It Out Remixed ... CD
Velour, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Soulive's funky funky Turn It Out album gets remixed – in a way that pushes that work way past the original! The choice of talents associated with the project is very strong – and the music is stretched to new limits with the addition of hip hop beats, MCs, and some other great instrumental touches. The overall feel is still very funky, with lots of snapping grooves that keep the spirit of the original record – and the quality of the record makes it well worth the Japanese-only price tag! Remixers include DJ Smash, DJ Spinna, DJ Krush, Echobass, Mister Rourke, and Neal Evans – and titles include remixes of "Turn It Out", "Cash's Dream", "Azucar" (featuring J-Live), "Soulive", "Steppin" (featuring Shuman), "Doin Something", and "Nealization". GoapeleEven Closer ... CD
Columbia/Skyblaze, 2002. Used ... $5.99
Heavy soul from the Bay Area scene – a fantastic set of tracks from the enigmatic Goapele! Goapele's an underground singer with a really righteous feel – and she's not afraid to use some heavy beats and funk to send her message home. The set's got a really well integrated instrumental feel – shifting slightly in style from track to track, but always with a positive and progressive approach only serves to push Goapele's lyrics all that much deeper. No softness here – just a mad kicking approach that's made us give the Bay Area another listen these days! Features guest work by Soulive, Pep Love, Zion I, and Casual – and titles include "It Takes More", "Closer", "Ease Your Mind", "Got It", "Romantic", "Too Much The Same", "Catch 22", "Salvation", and "Back To You".
