No need for a leap of faith where Bluey's concerned – as we've been loving his music with Incognito for many many years, and we're more than happy to hear the man on his own! The vibe here is every bit as soulful and righteous as the best Incognito work – but there's also a more personal sound, too – especially since Bluey's on lead vocals on every track – quite a change from before, as he often lets other singers take the lead! Turns out, Bluey's a hell of a lead singer on his own – with this warm and slightly raspy style that really fits in wonderfully with the grooves – which are heavy on Bluey's own guitar, plus keyboards and other instrumentation from Ski Oakenfull and Richard Bull. If you like Incognito as much as us, there's plenty to love here – and titles include "Stronger", "Leap Of Faith", "Sky", "Keep Myself Together", "Ain't Nobody's Business", "Got To Let My Feelings Show", and "Live Like A Millionaire".

The Floacist, sounding better than ever – in a record that may well top any of her previous work – and maybe even music by Floetry too! The set begins with a wonderful duet with Raheem Devaughn on the cut "Start Again" – a cut that feels like some lost treasure from the 70s, maybe a Marvin Gaye duet from the I Want You period – which then sets the stage for some perfect Floacist numbers that have a wonderfully righteous feel! Her solo identity is really coming together here – bold and proud, and never too smoothed out for commercial ends – on tracks that include "Children Of The Sun", "Slow Down", "Could It Be You", "Speechless", "Roots Of Love", "This Love", and "Start Again".

Soulful, not surreal – a sublime set of sounds from Incognito – one of the few groups who could ever stay this great for so long! The record's overflowing with everything we love about Incognito – that warm blend of soul, jazz, and funk – trained in the best 70s elements at its core, but served up with a lean, tight quality that not only belies the group's London roots, but their potent force in contemporary soul in the 21st Century! And although other recent albums have been great, there's really something special going on here – an extra-great element that we really can't put our finger on exactly, but which had us loving this one from the very first note. Vocals are great – sung by Vanessa Haynes, Natalie Williams, Mo Brandis, and the mighty Maysa – and titles include "The Less You Know", "The Stars From Here", "This Must Be Love", "Thoughtful Fantasies", "Restless We Are", "Rivers On The Sun", and "Above The Night".

Sweet, smooth, and soulful sounds from Mint Condition – still very much at the top of their game, and running strong with that tight harmony style that's always made them a favorite 'round these parts! The album's got a great balance between mainstream tightness and indie soul looseness – a quality that has the group sounding right on the money throughout, yet with a vibe that's nicely spontaneous and personal too – especially on some fo the mellow steppers that represent some of the best tracks on the set. Titles include "In The Moment", "Believe In Us", "What I Gotta Du", "Nothin", "Be Where You Are", "Never Hurt Again", and "Girl Of My Life".

US issue of some of Sonny's African recordings from the early 80s. The groove here is afro-pop, with crisp guitars and a lighter beat than Fela's style of afrobeat, but with similar cascading horn parts. The production's a bit slicker too, with the vocals pushed way forward in the mix. Titles include "Tell Them", "Liberation", "Amen", "Olu Ebube", and "Tire Ni Oluwa".

Sublime vocals from the legendary Phil Perry – still sounding wonderful after all these many years, and getting some great contemporary help from producer Chris "Big Dog" Davis! The album's got a sweet-stepping vibe that really lets Perry shine – a warm sound that reminds us that his mellowest moments are still some of his finest – although Phil's also one to never let things slow down too much to get sleepy! The gentle groove holds strongly throughout – an equal Big Dog contribution that shows he's a great partner for Perry – and titles include "Peel The Veil", "Just A Little Bit", "Can't Hide Love", "Say Yes", "You Belong To Me", "Tonight Just Me & You", "Where Is The Love", and "You Send Me".

Brand New Heavies back in action – and sounding every bit as great as always! The group still has that sublime mix of soul, jazz, and funk that's made them so great right from the start – a mode that's steeped in classic influences from the 60s and 70s, yet finds a way to come out sounding really fresh and unique on every track! Instrumentation is razor-sharp, and mostly live – and vocals are by N'Dea Davenport, Jan Kincaid, Dawn Joseph, and Simon Bartholomew – creating a nice mix of personalities that make the record feel even more joyously collaborative than ever – almost as if the group's borrowed a page from the Incognito book – and the great way that combo has of coming together. The sound is warm and flowing throughout – never stiff or commercial – and titles include "Heaven", "Turn The Music Up", "Do You Remember", "On The One", "Sunlight", "Forward", "Addicted", and "A Little Funk In Your Pocket".

We've loved Swing Out Sister for more than a few years – and over that time, the duo's only gotten better! It's records like this that keep us coming back again and again – a brilliant blend of soul currents and hook-heavy arrangements that feel like a blend of late 60s UK and the best of the contemporary global Neo Soul underground! Corinne Drewery's vocals grab us right away with their depth and upfront sense of personality – and the sweet keyboards of Andy Connell hold the whole thing together with the kind of jazzy undercurrents the group has had since their start. The set includes some sweet remakes of older tunes – and titles include "You On My Mind", "Incomplete Without You", "Notgonnachange", "Am I The Same Girl", "Breakout (fabulous party mix)", "Mama Didn't Raise No Fool", and "Now You're Not Here (Taj Calder inst)". Plus, this special package also features a bonus DVD – a full length concert, titled Tokyo Stories – as well as a special book with rare photos, an essay on the group, and a personal message too!

Essential Afro reggaefrom Ivory Coast pioneer great Alpha Blondy – 1984's standard bearing Cocody Rock! The title track and defining anthem "Cocody Rock" was cut at Tuff Gong and sort of paved the way for African reggae to come. A number of the tracks feature backing by the group Solar System and the whole thing is great. Titles include "Cocody Rock", "Tere", "Super Powers", "Interplanetary Revolution", "Fangandan Kameleba", Bory Samory" and dub versions of "Cocody Rock" and "Tere".

Afro reggae Great Alpha Blondy fulfills his dream of performing with The Wailers! The best of the tracks, especially the title track, is quite wonderful – with great vocals throughout by Alpha Blondy. A few tunes have a drum machine, grounding the atmosphere of those numbers squarely in the mid 80s, but the other tracks are timeless. A worthy effort overall, and titles include "Jerusalem", "Polituqui", "Bloodshed In Africa", "I Love Paris", "Kalachnikov Love", "Travailler C'est Trop Dur", "Miwa" and "DJI".

Timeless soul from Maysa – who here lends her sweet molasses vocals to numbers made famous by Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendergrass, The Isley Brothers, Chaka Khan, The Stylistics, Roberta Flack and others! Maysa fully employs the sophisticated mellow soul approach on this set – befitting the material quite grandly with her sultry vocals, and tight band providing laidback keys, snapping drums & percussion, and some jazzy smooth horns and flute in spots. The most mature outing yet from the gifted vocalist whose roots helped plant Incognito! Tracks include "Wishing On A Star", "Don't Say Goodnight", "All I Do", "Love Won't Let Me Wait", "Come Go With Me", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "Playing Your Game, Baby", "Love Comes Easy", "Any Love" and "The First Time (I Ever Saw Your Face)".

One of Bunny Wailer's last totally roots oriented sets, before he began dabbling a bit in dancehall, and a mighty one at that. Livingston gets help from a cast of heavyweights, like Horsemouth Wallace, Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna Smith, Erest Ranglin, Tommy McCook, Bobby Ellis, Deadly Headly Bennet and Sticky Thompson. This US pressing, issued 3 years after the original Jamaican release, features all 6 cuts from the original LP: "Let Him Go", "Love Fire", "Roots Radics Rockers Reggae", "Rockin Time", "Rockers" and "Wirly Girly", plus an additional track, "Cease Fire".
