new Keyboard Circle (Rob Franken & Jan Huydts) — Keyboard Circle ... CD
678 Records (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy .... $18.99
A wicked collaboration between Dutch keyboardists Rob Franken and Jan Huydts – a set that has the pair of them really stretching out on Fender Rhodes, Arp, clavinet, and other keyboards – with only a bit of drums to back them up! Yet although the set's got a really freewheeling sort of feel, it's never too jamming – as both players have a strong inherent sense of rhythm that really keeps things on track – a great little groove that makes for a wonderful little record – one that comes off more like a familiar Fender Rhodes trio date than you might think! There's a nice degree of funk at points, but also some modal elements that really make the set cook – a vibe that's right up there with the best MPS keyboard-heavy sets, such as the classic early work by George Duke – although without any vocals here. Titles include "Absorbed Love", "Six Seven Eight", "Blue Bossa", "Protuberans", "Tamotua", "The Kumquat Kids", and "Basic Train".

Rob Mazurek Octet — Skull Sessions (with download) ... LP
Cuneiform, 2013. New Copy .... $21.99 22.98
One of the most outside sets we've heard from Rob Mazurek in years – a combination of his own cornet and work on ring modulator – creating a blend of jazz and electronics that's really mindblowing! Mazurek's not alone in his creative expressions – as he's joined here by a group group of players that mixes musicians from Rob's Chicago and Brazilian scenes – including Nicole Mitchell on flute and piccolo, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Mauricio Takara on cavaquinho, Guilherme Granado on keyboards and electronics, Thomas Rohrer on rabeca and C melody sax, Carlos Issa on guitar, and John Herndon on drums – a really unique lineup that lives up to all their promise with the rich sounds on the set. Most tracks are quite long – and titles include "Galactic Ice Skeleton", "Skull Caves Of Alderon", and "Keeping The Light Up".

Rob Mazurek Pulsar Quartet — Stellar Pulsations ... CD
Delmark, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 16.99
One of the most striking records so far from the mighty Rob Mazurek – a set that makes us more than glad we've been following his musical journey for the past two decades! The set's got a nicely compressed feel – one that takes some of the looser energy that's been bubbling up in recent Mazurek records, and delivers it in a tight quartet format – with Rob's sparkling cornet in the lead, amidst great piano from Angelica Sanchez, bass from Matt Lux, and drums from John Herndon! Given the wide resumes of all players, there's a really shifting sense of sound here – one that's bold one minute, introspective the next – and never falls into too-familiar jazz phrasing modes. Yet Mazurek's also really matured as a player, too – working here with a sensitivity we never would have expected years ago – captured with great clarity in the recording. Titles include "Magic Saturn", "Spiritual Mars", "Twister Uranus", "Spanish Venus", "Folk Song Neptune", and "Spiral Mercury".

Sao Paulo Underground (Rob Mazurek) — Tres Cabacas Loucuras ... CD
Cuneiform, 2011. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
The third and best album yet from Sao Paulo Underground – formed by Chicago scene veteran and sonic adventurer Rob Mazurek – with a sound that's informed by the rhythms and creatively boundless possibilities of Tropicalia era Brazil and well beyond, along with the cosmic spirit of other Mazurek projects such as the Exploding Star Orchestra. This is hypnotic, attention seizing work that pushes boundaries and challenges tradition while still respecting it – it's never less than fully engrossing and pulls you right in, but it also skirts convention on just about every level. Mazurek's on coronet and electronics that fracture and fuzz out the atmosphere, creating some really dynamic interplay with instrumentation. Mauricio Takara is on cavaquinho, drums and percussion, Guilherme Granado on keys, loops, samples and percussion and Richard Ribeiro on drums. A pair of excellent tracks feature fellow modern greats with roots in the Chicago underground – vibes player Jason Adasiewicz and drummer John Herndon on "Just Lovin'" and "Six Six Eight" – the latter also featuring bass player Matthew Lux. The entire album is no less impressive, though! Titles include "Jagoda's Dream", "Pigeon", "Carambola", "Colibri", "Lado Leste", and "Rio Negro".

Rob Thomsett — Yaraandoo ... LP
Roundtable (Australia), 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
A strange, cool and stylistic boundary busting set from Australian jazz rock guitar player Rob Thomsett! Yaraandoo is a 1975 set inspired by Aboriginal folklore. It has some spare, dryly wispy bits of percussion and bamboo flute that feels that gives it that feel – but Thomsett also brings in some loose, proggy and jazzy rock dynamics with heavy drums and electric guitar, some improvisational jazz inspired passages, plus some tape delay and other effects. Includes "Baiame", "Moulding Of Red Earth", "Nameless Children", "New Life – Refusal", "Shadow Of Yaraan", "Flight Of Yaraan", "Tears Of Blood – Endless Weeping" and more.

Rob Young (ed) — No Regrets – Writings On Scott Walker (hardcover) ... Book
Orion Books/Wire (UK), 2012. New Copy Book .... $20.99 29.95
Way more than some of the star-type bios on Scott Walker that have littered the market over the years – and instead, a well-chosen collection of writings on Walker that really get at the full depth of his genius! The book's a co-production with The Wire – and definitely lives up to the thoughtfulness you'd expect from that association – as editor Rob Young pulls together work on Scott from a number of different fronts – served up first in chapters on specific records, each written by a different artist and commissioned for the book – then moving onto other interview material too. Includes writings by Nina Power, Ian Penman, Biba Kopf, Amanda Petrusich, Richard Cook, Anthony Reynolds, David Toop, and others – and the book is 297 pages, hardcover.

Various — Le Beat Bespoke Vol 2 – Tailor Made Cuts Compiled By Rob Bailey ... CD
Circle (UK), 1960s. New Copy .... $18.99
Funky mod grooves galore – and a sublime second set in the Le Beat Bespoke series! This one is even better than the first – and seems to dig even deeper in the crates to come up with a range of rare singles from around the globe – all dripping with heavy drums, fuzzy guitars, and sweet sweet Hammond organ work! Many numbers have vocals, and most are from the rockish side of the spectrum – but they've all got a romping, grooving bottom end that more than makes them a little bit funky – usually in a groove that's way different than the sort you'd find on other funky compilations! The notes are great, the tracks are amazing, and the CD's one of the freshest funky sets to hit our racks in a long long time. CD features 20 titles that include "Madeline" by Dick Turpin, "Dude" by Poppys Haunted House, "Springtime" by Jimmy Thomas, "One Two Boogaloo" by The Light Nites, "Little Louise" by Shere Khan, "I Found You" by The Tops, "You Know He Did" by Mary McCarthy, "Rouge Rouge" by Christie Luame, "Truth In My Tears" by Louisa Jane White, "Berlin" by Heidi Bruhl, and "Run Shaker Life" by Paul Nicholas.

new Rob Franken — Fender Rhodes ... CD
Sonic Scenery (Netherlands), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $18.99 Just Sold Out!
Incredible Fender Rhodes from Rob Franken – a beautiful collection of rare recordings made in the mid 70s! All of this work was never issued here in the US – and most of it features Franken in really laidback, stripped-down settings – working some soulful magic on the keys of the Fender Rhodes, with a depth in sound that easily matches some of the bigger-name keyboardists in the US during the 70s! The package is filled with gems you'd never find in American record racks (or European ones, for that matter!) – and although many of the numbers are trio tunes, a few of them expand the group with other players who include Jimmy Owens or Clark Terry on flugelhorn, and Ernie Wilkins on tenor. Titles include "Absorbed Love", "Title Wave", "Six Seven Eight", "Terry Tune", "Esopet", "Straight Back", and "Look Softly". Also features a bonus CD – with a long live version of "Secret Love", plus interviews and other materials that make an "audio portrait" of Franken, but in Dutch language.

new Rob Mazurek — Sound Is ... CD
Delmark, 2009. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful work from Rob Mazurek – a player we respect more and more with each new release! The title here is especially well chosen – as "Sound Is" definitely what the record is about – a set that follows in the same legacy of sonic exploration first begun on seminal Delmark Records sides cut by the AACM in the 60s – recast here by a new Chicago generation that features Mazurek on cornet and piano, John Herndon on drums and percussion, Matt Lux on electric bass, Josh Abrams on acoustic bass and piano, and Jason Adasiewicz on some especially nice vibes! The vibes often have this chromatic quality that's starkly metallic – ringing out strongly next to Abrams' warmer bass, and Mazurek's palette of colors on his horn – driven by a brooding sense of rhythm from Herndon, playing here away from his more familiar Tortoise setting, and reminding us that he's always had a great ear for jazz. Titles include "The Earthquake Tree", "The Star Splitter", "The Dream Rocker", "Microrapagonafly", "Aphrodite Rising", "The Field", "Nora Grace", "Le Baiser", and "Dragon Kites".

new Rob Mazurek Exploding Star Electro Acoustic Ensemb — Space Between (CD/DVD) ... CD
Delmark, 2013. New Copy CD & DVD .... $11.99 15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most electric albums we've heard from Rob Mazurek in years – no surprise, given that the set's billed to an Electro Acoustic version of his Exploding Star group! The music here was done in collaboration with videomaker Marianne Kim – whose video is included with the package as a separate DVD, and also features some work from visual work from Mazurek as well. But our main focus here is the music, which is great – all the earthy, exploratory tones that Rob's been unleashing in recent years – clearly inspired by some of the best Miles or Don Cherry moments of the 70s, but very different too – as handled by this range of key contemporary players from Chicago. Rob speaks a bit on a few tracks, and the set also features work from Damon Locks on voice and electronics, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Matt Bauder on electronics, Guilherme Granado on sampler, Carrie Biolo on percussion, Jeff Kowalkowski on keyboards, and John Herndon on drums. Titles include "We Are All One With The Moon & Planets", "Only", "The Shifting Sequence", "Indra's Net", and "Seven Blues".

new RobMake It Fast Make It Slow ... LP
Essiebons/Soundway (UK), 1977. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
The second album from Ghanaian funk singer, composer and arranger Rob – issued for the first time ever outside of Ghana, thanks to the deep diggers at Soundway! Rob sings in English throughout – and there's a slinky, slow-cooking, kinda strange groove on most of the numbers – a mix of funk with lots of offbeat, oddball touches – of the sort that some folks these days might dub Afro Psych – but which was just pretty darn experimental back in the day! Rhythms are heavy on guitar, bass, and drums – and plenty of offbeat percussion – all topped with some great heavy horns too. The memorable title track is one of the most unique Afro Funk songs you could ever hope to hear – , with dexterous opening horn blasts, clattering bell-like percussion, and undeniably carnal English vocals – and the rest of the album's pretty darn amazing too! Other titles include "Loose Up Yourself" "Not The End", "I've Got To See You Again Lord", "He Shall Live In You", "But You", "Bargain" and "Back On You".

new Rob Agerbeek — Home Run ... CD
Blue Jack Jazz (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A definite home run from Dutch pianist Rob Agerbeek – a hip set recorded in 1971, and one that's done with a very soulful groove! The group's a quintet, and Rob really sparkles in this setting – pushing the players with a subtle skill that recalls Horace Silver at his Blue Note best – especially in the way that Agerbeek mixes upbeat grooving with more sensitive sounds on the set! Other players include Dick Vennik on tenor and flute, Willem Reinen on flugelhorn, Rob Langereis on bass, and Eric Ineke on drums – a really great group of players who fit toghether wonderfully here – pushing the grooves of the tunes strongly forward with warm energy, but also breaking out with some sharp solos of their own. Titles include the funky classic "The Chair Dance" – plus "Little Miss Dee", "Just Robbish", "Minor Rush", and "The Blue Countess".

new Seiichi Nakamura — First Contact – Live At The Rob Roy ... CD
King (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A stone smoker from tenorist Seiichi Nakamura – thanks partly to some great trombone from Shigeharu Mukai! Shige's one of our favorite Japanese trombonists from the 70s, and he really gives this session a deep degree of soul – working strongly in the frontline with Seiichi, and getting tight rhythm support from Hiroshi Tamura on piano, Isoo Fukui on bass, and Takuji Kusumoto on drums! Most of the record is in a straight hardbop mode – which really lets the tenor and trombone shine – and titles include "Frank N Earnest", "Closing Theme For Quintet", "Judy's Samba", and "Melba's Blues".

new Minami Yasuda — South – Yasuda Minami Live At The Rob Roy ... CD
King (Japan), 1974. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A sweet swinger from this hip Japanese vocalist – one of the groovier talents of that scene in the 70s, and an artist whose name wasn't that well known on our side of the Pacific! The record's got a soulful bounce right from the start – thanks to backings from the trio of pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, with extra work on alto by Yoshio Otomo – sliding in underneath the vocals to give the tunes a sharp edge! Miami's got this way of singing that has a sweet little crackle – not a mode that's echoing other American singers, but a groove that's all her own – and one that suits her nicely on titles that include "Gravy Waltz", "Chains Of Love", "Bye Bye Blackbird", "I'm Walkin", and "Good Morning Heartache".

William Adamson — Under An East Coast Moon ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
Almost an underground groove supergroup – given that the set features work from Earl Zinger (Rob Gallagher of Galliano) at the helm, production from 2 Banks Of 4, vocals from Valerie Etienne, and funky rhythms from Shawn Lee! The combination of talents come together here in a very new way – with a style that's much grittier and earlier than before, although still pretty darn groovy overall – almost putting a raspy old school touch on a scene that's definitely matured on its own, and may well be old enough to lay claim to the rootsy sound of this set! Rob's songwriting has definitely matured, and at some of the best moments, there's almost a British Tom Waits-y kind of quality to the set. Titles include "Below Sea Level", "Burial Blues", "Whip Of The Wind", "Laxfield Blasphemy", "Velvets Eleven", "Margaret Catchpole", and "Foggy Dew".

The first proper Aesop Rock album in a few years – and his first for Rhymesayers – a logical next step for his uncompromising, darkness-tinged sounds and distinctive rhyme style of his early work for Def Jux! Hanni El Khatib plays guitar on a few tracks, as does Allyson Baker, with appearances by Rob Sonic and Kimya Dawson. Includes "Leisureforce", "ZZZ Top", "Cycles To Gehenna", "Zero Dark Thirty", "Crows 1" with Kimya Dawson, "Homemade Mummy", "Crows 2" with Rob Sonic, "1,000 Clock", "Saturn Missiles", "Tetra", "Gopher Guts" and more.

new Maya Azucena — Cry Love ... CD
Half Note, 2011. Used .... $5.99
The third album from Maya Azucena and here debut for the Half Note label – brilliant true soul from one of our favorite voice of the past decade – really at her best here! Maya may be drawing from a more diverse stylistic spectrum here – there's some classic brass backed soul numbers, more stripped down acoustic instrumentation, strains of hip hop soul and other touches – but it flows perfectly thanks to her straight up beautiful voice and her own songwriting anchoring it all tightly. We wondered if she was going to move more towards a jazzy style with the move to Half Note, but this is soul music through and through! Includes "Cry Love", "Shine", "Near", "Change My Mind", "Belong To The Sun". "Run Into The Light", "Warriors", "Live On", "Little Ghetto Boy" feat Chris Rob and more.

Exploding Star Orchestra — Stars Have Shapes ... CD
Delmark, 2010. New Copy .... $12.99 16.99
The most amazing record to date from Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra – just the kind of cosmic, spiritual session you'd expect from the group's name – perfectly placed in a Chicago lineage that includes Sun Ra's Arkestra and the best years of the AACM! The group's got all the collaborative spirit of the latter reference – a largeish ensemble made up of some of the city's most important avant musicians in recent years – including Nicole Mitchell on flute, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on acoustic bass, Matt Bauder on clarinet and tenor, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, and Mike Reed and John Herndon on drums – all players who know each others strengths through countless gigs together – coming together under the visionary leadership of Rob Mazurek on cornet. There's some slight electro-acoustic elements, which further complicate the sound of the record – but all without ever taking it off base – and the whole thing's got a righteous sort of energy that makes us mighty proud that sounds this great came from our hometown. Titles include "ChromoRocker", "Impression #1", "Ascenscion Ghost Impression #2", and "Three Blocks Of Light".

Fat Joe Da Gangsta — Represent ... LP
Relativity, 1993. New Copy (reissue).... $7.99 9.98
Fat Joe's first LP – a very strong slice of east coast early 90s gangsta that's way stronger than the 14-year-olds who listened to Joe in the 00s will probably ever know. Hi-Lo's — Back Again ... LP
MPS, 1979. Very Good+ .... $3.99
A groovy late 70s outing from the Hi Los – done at the same time that group member Gene Puerling was having a great run for MPS with his group The Singers Unlimited! The style here's a bit like the Hi Los of old, but it's also got some of the smoother, sweeter tones that Puerling developed with the Singers Unlimited – that near-perfect approach to sound, with the vocals wrapped up nicely in pure harmonic bliss! Backings are directed by Rob McConnell, and vocal arrangements are by Puerling – on titles that include "Misty", "Everything Must Change", "I Remember You", "Seems Like Old Times", and "When Sunny Gets Blue".

Andrew Hill — Faces Of Hope ... LP
Soul Note (Italy), 1980. Near Mint- .... $5.99
Later solo work from Andrew Hill – an Italian session with four long tracks, and a fair bit of sensitive tones throughout! The record definitely has some of Hill's tentative qualities of the period – playing that almost makes you feel like he's rediscovering the keyboard of the piano with each new track – but there's also a subtle sort of warmth as well, especially at points when Andrew relaxes into an area he's been hovering around for a few measures – relaxing just a bit, and relishing the sound. Titles include "Rob It Mohe", "Ceora", "Bayside 1", and "Bayside 2".

new John Lee & Gerry Brown — Mango Sunrise ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1975. New Copy .... $15.99
Fantastic lean low funky fusion – and a lost Blue Note 70s gem – a set that's way different than any other work from the team of bassist John Lee and drummer Gerry Brown! The set's nice and spare – almost CTI in style at times, but with some excellent production work from Skip Drinkwater – who brings in some soul undercurrents, and a sense of focus that other Lee/Brown work is sometimes missing. The result is a wonderful little record that avoids any of the excesses the pair had on the European scene – yet still has a really sharp edge in the end. Wah Wah Watson plays guitar, as does Philip Catherine – and the set also features some excellent keyboards – handled by Jasper Van't Hoff, Rob Franken, and Lee himself. Funky nuggets include "Mango Sunrise", "Her Celestial Body", and "The Stop and Go" – all of them filled with jazzy breaks!

Teena Marie — It Must Be Magic (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Gordy (Japan), 1981. New Copy .... $36.99
Maybe the greatest album that Teena Marie ever cut – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of the lady's work for Motown! The set's got this bright, positive bounce that grabs you right from the start – but also moves into a depth that's way different than other funk albums of the time – a way with a ballad and a thoughtful track that almost makes Marie the 80s heir to the Minnie Riperton legacy, especially given the strength of her voice on the set – and the fact that Teena wrote and produced the whole album herself! At a time when so many other female soul singers were at the mercy of other folks' talents and ideas, Lady T steps forth boldly with this classic set – brimming over with greatness on cuts that include the stellar "Portuguese Love", plus "Yes Indeed", "Where's California", "Opus III", "Square Biz", "365", "Revolution", and "Ballad Of Cradle Rob & Me".

William Parker — Essence Of Ellington – Live In Milano ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2012. New Copy 2 CDs .... $18.99 19.99
The essence of Duke Ellington – but in the hands of William Parker, it's a very different thing than you might expect! The group here is larger than usual for Parker – a great ensemble used in ways that definitely echo some of Ellington's more inventive scoring, especially his mature use of tone and color – yet both the solos and ensemble moments go way way farther than anything the Duke might have imagined – all the bold, righteous brilliance that we've come to love in Parker's own recordings – focused back on one of his greatest inspirations. The lineup is quite impressive – as musicians include Roy Campbell on trumpet, Ras Moshe on tenor and soprano, Rob Brown and Darius Jones on alto, Sabir Mateen on clarinet and tenor, Steve Swell on trombone, Dave Burrell on piano, Hamid Drake on drums, and Parker himself on bass – and titles include "Take The Coltrane", "Essence Of Sophisticated Lady/Sophisticated Lady", "Caravan", "Essence Of Ellington", "Take The A Train/Ebony Interlude", and "Portrait Of Louisiana".

William Parker Double Quartet — Alphaville Suite – Music Inspired By The Jean Luc Godard Film ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2007. New Copy .... $16.99
A really unusual project from bassist William Parker – a great tribute to the legendary Godard film Alphaville, done with music that's a surprisingly great fit! There's almost a jazz soundtrack feel to the record at points – a bit straighter than usual for Parker, but still with plenty of edge – although other tracks sometimes get a bit more outside and improvisational, making for a really nice balance in the record. The core group features Parker on bass, Rob Brown on alto, Lewis Barnes on trumpet, and Hamid Drake on drums – which is then augmented by two cellos, violin, and viola – shading in the sound nicely. Parker really does a great job of capturing the quick shifts, bold moments, and striking qualities that make Godard's film so great – and titles include "Alphaville Main Theme", "Interrogation", "Alph 60", "Doctor Badguy", "Oceanville Evening", and "Civilization Of Light" – plus two versions of the great track "Natasha's Theme", a spiritual soulful number with vocals by Leena Conquest!

Fantasy, 1976. Very Good+ .... $11.99
One of the fantastic electric Cal Tjader sessions from the 70s – with that mixture of vibes and electric piano that made his work of the time take on an even funkier sound than before! Lonnie Hewitt's at the keyboards here – and he's got a sly, slinky groove that's totally great – a sound that's even more spacious than Tjaders' vibes, and which seems to push Cal into a whole new space in sound. The rest of the group includes Rob Fisher on acoustic bass, Pete Riso on drums, and the great Pancho Sanchez on congas – who further helps hold down the Latin side of the sound. Titles include a stellar 12 minute reading of Cal's "I Showed Them", which is pure funk all the way through – plus "Bluesology", "Body & Soul", and the extended "Black Orpheus Medley".

Various — Ghana Funk From The 70s ... CD
Hippo (Netherlands), 1970s. New Copy .... $13.99
Heavy funk from 70s Ghana – a sweet little set that's filled with rare and unusual grooves! The collection's got a strong focus on unreleased and very obscure material – and from what we can tell, none of these tracks have been reissued at all! The work here is not only funky, but it's also got some really offbeat qualities too – a bit psych-oriented at times, in the way the production comes together, or in the style of the instrumentation – a lot less crossover-oriented than some of the other grooves coming from other parts of the African scene in the 70s, although there's plenty of numbers here that would appeal to fans of American funk and soul. Titles include "Accra Makola" and "Kofi Wedzidzi" by Cutlass Dance Band, "Okuan Tsentsen Awar" and "Mber Papa" by CK Mann, "Kwaakwa" and "I Am Black" by Apagya Show Band, "Bolga Besia" by Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, "Dza Hunu Tso" by Amartey Hedzoleh, "Amponsah" by Ebo Taylor, and "Read The Bible" by Rob.

new Various — Magik Sunrise – Presented by Psychemagik ... CD
Leng (UK), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $18.99
Unusual sounds abound – not the trippy psych you might expect from the cover, but not that far off either – just skewed in a completely different style, from a great range of scenes! The package digs deeper than most we've ever heard – past obvious touchstones in music, to uncover some unique cross-genre sounds and modes that are pretty hard to categorize! Most of these tracks are from obscure private press records, European releases, or other unusual sources – and instead of the usual hippy-era dates, lots of these cuts are from the late 70s and 80s – yet still retain this mellow sort of warmth – a spirit that was born in the folk funk generation, yet which has evolved quite differently, and sometimes with electronic touches too. Titles include "House On The Rock" by Rob Mehl, "Basshoven" by George Oban, "Transformation" by Jeff Liberman, "Safe & Sound" by David Astri, "Catching A Wave" by Steve & Teresa,. "C'Etait Un Beau Dimanche" by Daniel Mathieu, "Metropolis" by Walter Hawkins, and "Formentera Sunset Clouds" by Iasos. 2CD version – one CD unmixed, the other a mix of tracks from the set!

new Various — Wayfaring Strangers – Guitar Soli ... CD
Numero, Mid 60s/1970s/Early 80s. Used .... $9.99
A wonderful collection of obscure solo acoustic guitar tunes from the mid 60s up to the dawn of the 80s – beautiful work from a slew of players we've never heard of – but we'd put right up there with Fahey and Basho in the way they reach from the back porch to the cosmos with just their fingers and some strings! One thing we love about this set, and the Numero Group releases to date, is how deep they dig and what beauty they unearth, somehow with impeccable sound quality. Some tunes are starkly beautiful, some chime on fairly intently, some do both those things and more – and it's very heartening and instantly appealing stuff – wordless tunes that carry a lot of sensitivity and emotion! The 40 page booklet features detailed notes and bio material for each track, plus an introduction by Numero's Rob Sevier and essays by Dan Lambert and Jim Ohlschmidt. Titles include "Beginning" by Dana Westover", "Raga In D" by Ted Lucas, "Sailor's Dream" by Scotte Witte, "Flight" by George Cromarty, "Diagonal" by Richard Crandell, "Baha Dream Songs" by Daniel Hecht, "Delta Freeze" by Jim Ohlschmidt, "No More School" by Stephen Cohen, "Strawberry Man" by Mark Lang, "Warm River" by Bread Chequer, "One Forty Eight" by Swayne Canna and more.

new Simone — Simone On Simone ... CD
Koch, 2008. Used .... $7.99 Just Sold Out!
Very groovy work from the daughter of Nina Simone – vocalist Lisa Celeste Stroud, working here under her mother's last name! As you'd guess from the title, Simone's singing songs that her mother did strongly back in the day – but the setting's nicely different than Nina's originals – less of a copycat homage session, and more a swinging batch of bigger band numbers that have a really lively, soulful sort of feel! The younger Simone's vocal style is all her own – never too concerned with copping her mama's bag – and we appreciate that individuality, and the way that it keeps the album relatively fresh – as does arranger Rob Stoneback, whose charts here almost have a late 60s/early 70s big band feel – plenty groovy throughout! Titles include "Gal From Joes", "Go To Hell", "Child In Me", "Feeling Good", "Don't You Pay Them No Mind", "How Long Must I Wander", and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair".

new William Adamson — Under An East Coast Moon ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $28.99 29.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock

Another wonderful album from this groundbreaking Chicago combo! The group's now a permanent quartet, with the extremely great addition of Jeff Parker on guitar and electronics – and the album continues to push the boundaries of Rob Mazurek's unique sound. The liner notes on the back refer to a NY Times article that described the group's sound as "painterly", and to us, that's a pretty fair estimation of their sound. The group work in wide washes of sound – structured around conventional jazz traditions, but touched with a more abstract approach derived from their connection to the Chicago rock and experimental scene. Titles include "Warm Marsh", "Elroy", "504", "The World Has Changed", "Woman In Motion", and "Antiquity".

new Various — Ghana Funk From The 70s ... LP
Hippo (Netherlands), 1970s. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
Titles include "Accra Makola" and "Kofi Wedzidzi" by Cutlass Dance Band, "Okuan Tsentsen Awar" by CK Mann, "Kwaakwa" and "I Am Black" by Apagya Show Band, "Bolga Besia" by Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, "Dza Hunu Tso" by Amartey Hedzoleh and "Read The Bible" by Rob Reindorf.

new Various — We All Love Ella – Celebrating the First Lady Of Song ... CD
Verve, 2007. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
An all-star tribute to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald – one that features a number of contemporary singers trying to recapture the magic of Ella's best work from the 50s and 60s! We'll be honest in saying that we were a bit suspicious of this one at first, but the quality is surprisingly strong – mostly in an acoustic, swinging, jazzy mode – with arrangements predominantly by Rob Mounsey, and most singers really doing their best to hit a Fitgerald sort of groove. It's interesting to hear some of these vocalists doing their best to match Ella's phrasing, on titles that include "Blues In The Night" by Ledisi, "The Lady Is A Tramp" by Queen Latifah, "A Tisket A Tasket" by Natalie Cole, "Lullaby Of Birdland" by Chaka Khan, "Angel Eyes" by KD Lang, "Reaching For The Moon" by Lizz Wright, "Someone To Watch Over Me" by Gladys Knight, "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me" by Etta James, and "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Ella Fitzgerald & Stevie Wonder.

new Aesop Rock — Skelethon (plus download) ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2012. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $21.99 22.98 Out Of Stock
The first proper Aesop Rock album in a few years – and his first for Rhymesayers – a logical next step for his uncompromising, darkness-tinged sounds and distinctive rhyme style of his early work for Def Jux! Aesop hasn't missed a step, and the sound is as dystopian, breathless and creative as ever. Hanni El Khatib plays guitar on a few tracks, as does Allyson Baker, with appearances by Rob Sonic and Kimya Dawson. Includes "Leisureforce", "ZZZ Top", "Cycles To Gehenna", "Zero Dark Thirty", "Crows 1" with Kimya Dawson, "Homemade Mummy", "Crows 2" with Rob Sonic, "1,000 Clock", "Saturn Missiles", "Tetra", "Gopher Guts" and more.

new Ann Burton — Fly Me To The Moon – Early Burton & More ... CD
Blue Jack Jazz (Netherlands), 1962/1988. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Two slices of work from Dutch vocalist Ann Burton – one of the hippest jazz singers on the European scene of the 60s and 70s, although not as well known over here as some of her other overseas contemporaries! The first half of the CD features vintage live work from 1962 - material that has Burton's vocals with the Flamingo Combo – a group with piano, guitar, bass, and bongos – all of which make for a spare sound that's a nice change from the usual piano trio mode, leaving lots of room for Ann's vocals. Titles include "Bag's Groove", "Close Your Eyes", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "Let's Get Away From It All". The second half of the CD is of more recent vintage, but equally great – studio sides from 1988, recorded with the Rob Agerbeek trio. Agerbeek's group is really wonderful here – quite unusual in their mix of piano, bass, and vibes – which is sometimes augmented with trumpet from Ack Van Rooyen – and often using rhythmic approaches that really open up the tunes nicely, taking them far past simple renditions of familiar standards. Titles include "Afterthoughts", "Again", "Nice & Easy", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", and "I Won't Dance".

new Exploding Star Orchestra — Stars Have Shapes ... LP
Delmark, 2010. New Copy .... $11.99 15.99 Out Of Stock
The most amazing records to date from Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra – just the kind of cosmic, spiritual session you'd expect from the group's name – perfectly placed in a Chicago lineage that includes Sun Ra's Arkestra and the best years of the AACM! Titles include "ChromoRocker", "Impression #1", "Ascenscion Ghost Impression #2", and "Three Blocks Of Light".

new Teena Marie — It Must Be Magic (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown, Early 80s. New Copy .... $4.99 9.98 Out Of Stock
This expanded CD also includes 2 live tracks recorded in Long Beach – versions of "Deja Vu" and "Someday We'll All Be Free" – plus the bonus track "Square Biz", done in an instrumental version. All written & produced by Teena, too!

Akron — Voyage Of Exploration ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 2012. New Copy .... $12.99
A contemporary take on the sounds of mid-Century – a very cool batch of tracks that leans heavily on 50s exotica, 60s electronica, and lots of other odd bits – all filtered together in cool production with a really playful feel! The set's somewhere between some of the older retro sounds on the Irma La Douce label, and some of the colder work in recent years by groups who've been inspired by Italian crime and horror soundtracks – although Akron's work is a bit warmer overall. Titles include "Rabbits In Orbit", "A Glimpse Of Hell", "Frog War Chant", "Robot Grind", "Memory Hole", and "Picabu".

Byron Allen Trio — Byron Allen Trio (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
ESP, 1965. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
Beautifully free alto work from Byron Allen – a player who really shines brightly on this rare session for ESP Records – one of the few ever cut under his own name! Allen's got a style that's right up there with the 60s best from Ornette Coleman or Marion Brown – able to move with a fluidity that's breathless, even amidst rhythms that are very loose and open – as the trio here works in a style that almost echoes some of the harmelodic modes of Coleman, but which eventually pushes farther towards the freedoms of other artists on ESP! The set has some wonderful bass from Maceo Gilchrist, whose round, rolling tones really make the album sparkle – as do the punctuated drums of Ted Robinson. Titles include "Today's Blues Tomorrow", "Time Is Past", "Three Steps In The Right Direction", and "Decision For The Cole-Man".

Tandyn Almer — Along Comes Tandyn (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sundazed, Mid 60s. New Copy Gatefold .... $18.99 21.98
A fantastic collection of unreleased material by mid-to-late 60s psych pop songwriter genius Tandyn Almer – who's probably best know for penning the eternally great "Along Comes Mary" for The Association – but we sure didn't know how great of a performer he was on his own! The 15 track record was cut for his publisher Davon Music, who circulated it to insiders at the time, looking to sell the songs – but what they should have done was found a label and released it. Fuzzy guitars, raw drums and great keyboards, excellent background harmonies – and the good-natured, melodic quality that attracted groups like the Association to Tandyn! Sundazed has long been a favorite source of rewarding 60s and 70s reissues, but they really deserve some bigger love for releases like this one – which is a first-ever commercial release. It feels like a complete, finished production for the most part – and not at all like a bunch of demos. Psych pop greatness! Includes "Find Yourself", You Turn Me Around", "Anything You Want", "About Where Love Is", "Face Down In The Mud", "I Get High", "Bring Your Own Self Down" (by The Purple Gang)", "Where Will They Go", "Sunset Strip Soliloquy" and more.

Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra — Towards Other Worlds ... CD
First Word (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $12.99
Not Afrobeat, but Astrobeat – a unique hybrid of older funk modes and contemporary cosmic touches – all served up beautifully by Ariya! The album definitely echoes older modes from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – particularly the chugging rhythms and tightly vamping instrumentation that you might know from the work of Fela or Tony Allen – but there's also some more 21st Century elements on the keyboards, which have a crackling bit of electricity that goes beyond the usual electric piano used back in the day – and which really helps give the record a different feel. Don't get us wrong – because nothing here is too slick, overproduced, or remix-heavy – the music is definitely Afro Funk at the core, just inflected in some really sweet ways – and served up mostly instrumental, on cuts that include "Blood In The Water", "Turncoat", "Future Ancestors", "New Frontiers", "Towards Other Worlds", and "Old Ground".

Association — Insight Out (expanded mono edition) ... CD
Warner/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy .... $13.99
Fantastic dreamy pop! Despite the fact that this one yielded the super-huge hits "Windy" and "Never My Love", the album's also filled with great 60s pop tunes that you've probably never heard before – all as fantastically well-crafted and delicately strung-out as the big hits. The Association were truly one of the greatest 60s pop harmony groups to come out of the LA scene – and even a big hit album like this is the kind of gem that you'd spend years digging through rare vinyl to hope to find! Other titles include "Happiness Is", "On A Quiet Night", "We Love Us", "Reputation", and "Requiem For The Masses". This great expanded mono edition has 10 bonus tracks (!!!): "Autumn Afternoon", "Windy (Mono 45)", "Requiem For The Masses (Mono 45)", "Sometime (Instrumental)", "We Love Us (Instrumental)" and more.

Donald Austin — Crazy Legs ... CD
Eastbound/Westbound (UK), 1973. New Copy .... $11.99
A sweet little album of funky instrumental guitar! The record's one of the most obscure on the Westbound label – and it features guitar player Donald Austin going to town on 13 short little cuts with a tripped-out funky groove – sometimes fuzzy, usually funky, and always with that heavier kind of sound you'd expect from Westbound in the early 70s! Austin's guitar is very much in the mode of Eddie Fisher, Eddie Senay, or other kicked-back jazz funk players from his generation – an approach that's probably got a bit of Hendrix somewhere back in the mix, but which is more focused on the tighter side of the funk and soul instrumental spectrum! The album's like finding a stash of rare funky 45s – loads of great short tracks with titles that include "Sex Plot", "Crazy Legs", "You Want It, You Got It", "Side Saddle", "Nanzee", "Pea Shooter", "Do Me Right", and "Shake Your Head".
(Comes in a great little cardboard slipcase – replicating the old LP sleeve!)

Roy Ayers & Wayne Henderson — Step Into Our Life/Prime Time ... CD
Polydor/Robinsongs (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy 2CD .... $15.99
Talk about a meeting of the minds – a pair of ultra-amazing classics from the team of Roy Ayers & Wayne Henderson – back to back in a single set! At the time of Step Into Our Life, Henderson & Ayers were probably the biggest names in the jazz funk business – both with a smooth soulful style that was pushing the genre onto whole new levels, while still keeping firm roots in jazz – a rare blend that few other artists could handle this well! This initial debut from the pair seems to be much more dominated by the spirit of Roy Ayers' work at the time – particularly the mellow jazzed up work he was laying down on albums like Vibrations and You Send Me – a wicked sound that's rooted in modern soul modes, but filled with plenty of warm jazz elements too. The album's got wonderful vibes and electric piano from Roy – and tracks include "Step Into Our Life", "Lovers Should Always Be Together", "No Deposit No Return", "Ooh Baby", and "For Real". Prime Time is a funky classic from the team of Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson – both at the top of their game here, and effortlessly mixing together jazz, funk, and soul! The record really seems to embrace the best of both artists' styles – some of the bassy groovers that Wayne did so well himself, and while producing for other artists – and those snakey, soulful numbers that we love so much in the late 70s work from Roy Ayers – ultra-sophisticated, but still plenty darn grooving – and some of the most sensual soul you'll ever hope to hear. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Weekend Lover", "Thank You Thank You", "Can You Dance", "It Ain't Your Sign It's Your Mind", "You Make Me Feel Like Rockin With Ya", "Have Your Way", and "Million Dollar Baby".

Luiz Bacalov — Django ... CD
GDM (Italy), 1966. New Copy .... $23.99
A dark little western soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – one that's quite brooding overall, despite a rather catchy vocal tune on the title! There's some very odd instrumentation here – watery piano lines, floating bits of guitar, off-tuned strings – all used at different intervals, and in different ways – without as strongly of a unified feel as other albums of this nature. But it's those shifting sounds that make the record great – always creating an unsettling sort of mood, and one that's almost always in the darker, starker side of the spectrum. CD features a whopping 37 tracks in all – including 2 vocal renditions of the "Django" theme by Rocky Roberts, and 2 more by Roberto Fia – plus loads of instrumentals from the film!

Bad Meets Evil is Eminem and Royce the 5-9. Eminem's verses here are as good as the rhymes on his long out of print ep, and Royce's are just about as nice. Reef's production on both tracks is probably better than most of the production on Eminem's Aftermath/Interscope LPs.

Mims' is great on piano, and working with Bartz, the pair come up with some wonderfully soulful numbers that have a very earthy feel. Tracks include "Ju Ju Man", "Pisces Daddy Blue", and "Chelsea Bridge" – plus a version of "My Funny Valentine", with vocals by Syreeta.

This album was recorded after Basho's early work for the Takoma label, and it's got a bit less Native American imagery than before – replaced with more of a sense of Eastern mysticism for inspiration that also features some vocals alongside the guitar! Count Basie & His Orchestra — Basie's Beatle Bag ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $10.99
An amazing little record – with results that are even greater than the sum of its parts! As you'd guess from the title, Count Basie takes on the 60s sounds of The Beatles – but he's doing so with arrangements from the great Chico O'Farrill – who really keeps things interesting throughout – throwing in those hip rhythms and odd twists and turns he first forged with his Latin recordings – in ways that definitely live up to the groovy pedigree of the tunes. And the Basie group's got a groovier sound than usual – probably due to the arrangements – and Basie plays some nice organ riffs on a number of the album's tracks – one of the Count's rare outings on the instrument, always a treat. Titles include "Help!", "Can't Buy Me Love", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "All My Loving", and "And I Love Her". Proof that The Beatles' influence was way farther reaching than you'd ever expect!

Beach Boys — Smile Sessions (2CDs/book/poster/button) ... CD
Capitol, Mid 60s. New Copy 2CDs .... $24.99 34.98
My God – they finally did it! After all these years of hearing about the legendary Smile album from The Beach Boys – hearing snippets on other albums, studio bonus tracks, re-recordings, and all the other sources they've dangled in front of us for decades – Capitol's finally gone and done what they never did back in the 60s – released the whole legendary set together, as one package – and in formats that even exceed anything that might have been issued back in the day! You've probably heard a good number of the songs here before – some as they were chopped up and included on Smiley Smile, 20/20, and other post-Pet Sounds albums by the group – and in some recent re-recordings by Brian Wilson. But trust us, they all sound amazing here together – in the original recordings, with sublime 60s studio production, and godlike arrangements by the young Brian Wilson. Titles include "Our Prayer", "Gee", "My Only Sunshine/You Are", "Cabin Essence", "Wonderful", "Surf's Up", "Holidays", "Vege-Tables", "Good Vibrations", "Love To Say Dada", "Do You Like Worms", "Barnyard", and "I'm In Great Shape". Plus, this hip box set has loads of cool bits – 2CDs that include the original album with 8 bonus tracks on the first disc – then a full bonus CD of "finished" work from the project – alternate takes, expanded versions, and more – including "Our Prayer Dialogue", "Surf's Up 1st Movement", "Vege-Tables (fade)", "Cool Cool Water (version 2)", "Heroes & Villains (children were raised)", and more. Box also comes with a poster, a 36 page booklet, and a button!
