Wilbur De ParisOn The Riviera ... LP
Atlantic, 1961. Very Good ... $5.99
The album's got a cheescake cover, but it's done in a very traditional mode – a style that's right up there with the best New Orelans jazz sessions on Atlantic! Wilbur DeParis works in a small combo with Sidney De Paris and Doc Cheatham on trumpets, and Garvin Bushnell on some mighty sharp clarinet – an instrument that trades lines strongly with Wilbur's trombone, and the two especially strong trumpets! The set was recorded live, and has an even more biting feel than some of the late 50s Atlantic Records trad jazz sets – and titles include "Tres Moutarde", "South Rampart Street Parade", "Muskrat Rumble", "Sensation", and "Clarinet Marmalade". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue & green label pressing. Cover has some wear in the upper corner, but is great otherwise!)

✨✧ TocoRiviera ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2024. New Copy ... $32.99 36.99
Maybe the greatest album to date from Toco – warm, jazzy, and filled with all of the best influences from Brazilian music – served up with live instrumentation that brings even more soul to the music than some of the artist's sparer sessions! Toco since throughout, with this raspy charm that's even more compelling than we remember from years back – and the larger lineup of players mixes plenty of percussion with guitars, vibes, berimbau, and cavaquinho – as well as a nice array of keyboard work from Stefano Tirone, who's working here in territory that's a lot warmer than some of his clubbier project as S-Tone! The whole thing is wonderful – and very much in the classic reworking of Brazilian styles that was one of the first great marks of the Schema label many years back – still very much at the top of their game, on titles that include "Vento Doce", "Mar", "Lagrima", "Luz Da Bahia", "Alma De Turista", "Clube", "Carnaval Primeiro", and "Coragem". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousHouse Of Riviera Vol 2 – 9 Tracks From The Golden Era Of Italian House Music 1991 to 1994 – Selected By Nick V ... LP
Mona Musique (France), Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
A really wonderful collection from a time when the Italian scene was really on fire – getting past some of the more standard modes of Italo Disco of the 80s, and really stepping forward with some of the most soulful, uplifting sounds of house music! Given the way the earlier Italian work influenced the grooves in Chicago and New York clubs, the cultural exchange makes even more sense going the other way around – and the well-chosen cuts on this set represent the cream of the crop from this moment – really well-conceived, well-produced cuts that have a surprisingly soulful vibe throughout. Titles include the previously unreleased cuts "London (orig mix)" by Ricky Montanari & Davide Ruberto, and "Melt The Sun" by Ivan Iacobucci – plus "Let's Face The Music" by Night Communication, "Switch Back" by Green Baize, "Get Up" by Mental Detector, "So In Love With You (club)" by Sound Set, "Make My Move (Tira dub)" by Workin Happily, "Give You Myself (Ethos Mama dub)" by Sima, and "In Total Darkness (irregular dub)" by More Heavy Soul. ✨✧ Blossom DearieGive Him The Ooh-La-La ... LP
Verve, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Blossom Dearie's fantastic albums for Verve – all of which stand as some of the best recorded work she ever did! The album features Blossom in a warm intimate group, which gives great focus to her endearing voice, and lively piano. She's backed by Ray Brown and Herb Ellis, and she sings some nice groovy numbers that hearken back to her days in France – including "The Riviera", "Plus Je T'Embrasse", and "Give Him The Ooh-La-La". Nice stuff, and with a groovy cover to boot! LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing, with obi – MV 2546. A nice copy!)

✨✧ VariousSexopolis – The Sequel (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cosmic Disco Machine (Italy), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A second great serving of grooves from the French scene of the late 60s and early 70s – a package that also includes some rare sound library material too, and which shows that if you know where to look, French records can be a real treasure trove of funky cuts! We loved the first volume, but this second one may well dig even deeper – as much of the work here is new to our ears, and the cuts work together in a really great blend of funky instrumental modes – familiar elements from the time, but lots of great twists and turns too! Titles include "Mr Buzz" by The Flying Dutchman, "Soul Car" by Pierre Alain Dahan & Slim Pezin, "Riviera Express" by Bernard Estardy, "Ten Et Medor" by Alain Goraguer, "Belle Gueuse" by Claude Engel, "Lewis & Clark" by Raymond Guiot, "Red Medium" by Tonio Rubio, "Aubergine Time" by Bernard Lubat, "Bass Session" by Guy Pedersen, "Jelly Roll Dance" by Jean Pierre Martin, "Bass Duettino" by Raymond Guiot, "Nage Libre" by Hervey Roy, "Patio Bass" by Guy Pedersen, and "Bahia Bossa Nova" by Bernard Lubat. ✨✧ JJ JohnsonLooking Back ... LP
Prestige, 1949/1954. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A 12" album that combines sides that JJ Johnson previously issued on Prestige – some as 78rpm singles, some as 10" LP material – all of it very top-level bop modern work from Johnson's first stretch on the scene! There's a sharpness here that really sets JJ apart from other trombonists – that mix of fresh ideas that makes all of his recordings from the time worth checking out – both the late 40s cuts that make up a third of the record, and the additional 8 tracks from 1954 that make up the rest. Other players include Kenny Dorham on trumpet, John Lewis on piano, and Sonny Rollins on tenor for the 1949 sessions – and Kai Winding on trombone and Dick Katz on piano for the 1954 sessions. Titles include "Elysses", "Hilo", "Fox Hunt", "Opus V", "Don't Argue", "Riviera", "Dinner For One", "Wing Bag", and "Hip Bones". LP, Vinyl record album
