Ray Bryant — Sound Ray ... LP
Cadet, 1969. Very Good+ .... $6.99
Great work from Ray – and very much in the formula of his best Cadet records! The formula is simple – stick in 2 great original groovers, and fill the record with a few other covers of pop and jazz standards. Thanks to Richard Evans, who produced the sessions for Cadet, the grooves are great on nearly every track – and Ray sounds better here than on any other sides that we remember! In this case the originals are "Stick With It" and "Sound Ray" – both hard piano jams with a great downbeat and a nice dose of funk. Covers include "Song For My Father", "Con Alma", "Look Of Love", and "Scarborough Fair" – all very very nice!
(Blue label stereo pressing. Spine has a spot of old tape. Cover has some wear & split in the center of the top seam.)

new Rudy Ray Moore — Cockpit – The Third Rudy Ray Moore Album ... LP
Kent, Early 70s. Very Good- .... $9.99
An excellent early Rudy Ray Moore album – with tasty musical backing on just about every number, and some great routines that are extremely tight. The backing's not totally funky, but it does give Rudy's party humor a really strong approach – especially on his classic presentation of "Petey Wheatstraw – The Devil's Son-In-Law", which is done here in a nice extended version. Other tracks include "Have You Seen My Mule", "The Big Shipwreck", "Mop Bucket", and "Pool Shooting Monkey".
(Original pressing. Cover has some wear and a split bottom seam, with moisture staining and wrinkling along the bottom inch.)

Ray & His Court — Ray & His Court ... LP
Sound Triangle, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Some of the tightest funky 70s jamming ever – a lost gem from Ray & His Musical Court, a group that perfectly fuses JB/Horny Horns funk with beat-heavy Afro-Cuban groove! Ray and the group are one of the more obscure funky combos of the era, and it's a damn shame, because the group's tight-as-can-be amalgam of JB's style horn riffing and thumping Afro-Cuban percussion is some of the absolute best of its kind. This group seriously smokes any of the current funk bands on the road! On these sessions Ray wrote, produced, played "organ flute" and provided some vocals in a large group that includes three trumpets, bass clarinet, sax, two drummers, congas, electric bass, and a line of mostly Spanish vocalists. Amazing 70s super funk with a very proud Latin edge – and featuring tracks that include "Sunny", "Soul Freedom", "Cookie Crumbs", "De Eso Nada Monada", "Lo Sabia", "Venimos Acabando", "La Pena", and "La Senorita Lola".

Ray Goodman & Brown — Ray, Goodman, & Brown ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $26.99
Sweet silky harmony soul from the trio of Harry Ray, Billy Brown, and Al Goodman – the group's first album under a new name – after some previous indie work as The Moments! The album's got the group really stepping up with a rich new sound – drawing on all the best elements of their New Jersey roots, but hitting harmonies that are even more sublime – and put together perfectly by Lou Toby's arrangements. This debut from the trio's a real classic – proof that the indie group soul sound can make it to the big time – and although the lyrics are a bit off-beat, but that's always part of the charm of the group. Titles include "The Way It Should Be", "Inside Of You", "Treat Her Right", "Deja Vu", "Another Day", and "Special Lady".

Ray Goodman & Brown — Ray, Goodman, & Brown II ... LP
Polydor, 1980. Very Good+ .... $1.99
Probably the best album Ray, Goodman, and Brown cut after they dissolved The Moments, and moved to Polydor. Despite some more modern soul production than their classic recordings, their harmonies are excellent, and their voices are in totally top form. The LP includes their classic "Happy Anniversary", plus "You", "Sweet Sexy Woman", "Each Time Is Like The First Time", and "Part Of You".
(Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has a hint of light wear.)

new Ray Brown — Ray Brown With The All-Star Big Band/Ray Brown & Milt Jackson ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1962/1965. New Copy .... $13.99 18.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two great ones as a leader from bassist Ray Brown – back to back on a single CD! All Star Big Band is a standout session from Brown – one of a few 60s big band sessions recorded for Verve, featuring some searing solo work from Cannonball Adderley! Brown's name as a leader is possibly more as a compadre than the main driving force of the record – as the arrangements here are by Ernie Wilkins, often in the tightly soulful bag he was laying down at the time – and Adderley's presence as the main soloist certainly gives a Cannonball flair to the record. But there's definitely plenty of Brown's warmth guiding the whole session – and other players include Nat Adderley, Clark Terry, Melba Liston, Budd Johnson, and Yusef Lateef. Some tracks have Brown's bass right out front in the arrangements, dipping nicely and adding into the groove – and titles include "Tricotism", "Cannon Built", "Thumbstring", "Two For The Blues", and "Work Song". Ray Brown & Milt Jackson is a really hip record from the team of bassist Ray Brown and vibist Milt Jackson – a swinging large group record that has them fronting arrangements from Oliver Nelson and Jimmy Heath! Nelson and Heath are both mighty hip cats at this point in their career – and bring a soulful swing to the record that really takes off – a groove that's lively, but tuned with lots of cool colors and tones too – shifting effortlessly while things move forward – but always with the right soulful appeal for older fans of both leaders. Milt's especially great in this setting – even more on fire than some of his other collaborations with Brown – and titles include "Dew & Mud", "Lined With A Groove", "Lazy Theme", "In A Crowd", and "Now Hear My Meaning".

Ray Barretto — Que Viva La Musica (remastered edition) ... CD
Fania, 1972. New Copy .... $9.99 10.99
Fantastic stuff from Ray Barretto – and one of his most sophisticated albums of the 70s! The album mixes together rootsy percussion and smoother jazzy arrangements – in a manner that keeps things fresh at all points, and which shifts the focus nicely from track to track – creating a really rich sound that's almost unlike anything else he ever recorded! Luiz Cruz plays excellent electric piano, and Adalberto Santiago is on lead vocals on a few tracks – and titles include the extended version of "Cocinando", used as the theme in Our Latin Thing – plus the cuts "Que Viva La Musica", "El Tiempo Lo Dira", "Bruca Manigua", and "Alafia Cumaye".

Ray Barretto — Senor 007 ... CD
United Artists/West Side Latino, 1965. Used .... $22.99
One of our favorite Ray Barretto albums of the 60s – a real gem from the pre-Latin Soul years! The album's a clear attempt to cash in on the cash in on the James Bond craze of the time – issued by United Artists, who were releasing the Bond films, but also had Ray under contract during the period too. But despite that simple gimmick, it's a great little set – with a quality level that goes way beyond Bond soundtracks, or the usual from Barretto at the time! The tracks are all hard and groovy, with an excellent jazz feel – and some killer arranging from Ray that's right up there with the work he did for his legendary Charanga Moderna album! You may recognize the song titles – but their versions here are superb, and the album's filled with many many wonderful moments that step out with mad rhythms and great jazzy touches. Titles include "Mister Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "OO7", "Search For Vulcan", "Thunderball", and "Goldfinger". Nice "spy" shot of Ray on the cover, too!

Ray Barretto — Together ... LP
Fania, 1971. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An early 70s killer from Ray – recorded right in the same era as most of his best albums! The feel here is strongly in the salsa mode – as Ray steps effortlessly from the Latin Soul era into a whole new decade of musical magic. And like the best of his 60s work, Ray's salsa cooks at a level that's far hotter than most of his contemporaries – with lots and lots of incredibly tight percussion, impeccable instrumentation, and even a more soulful approach to the vocals than usual. The album's got a short Latin soul groover called "Together", which has tight bass and a very catchy lyric; an extended Latin jazz version of "Tin Tin Deo", with some incredible piano that goes way way out over the groove; and plenty of other great Latin numbers, like "Invitacion Al Son", "Vive Y Vacila", "De Donde Vengo", and "Hipocresia y Falsedad".

Les Baxter — Man With The X-Ray Eyes/Tales Of Terror ... CD
La La Land, 1962/1963. New Copy .... $9.99 15.98
Eerie early 60s material from Les Baxter – his soundtrack work for Roger Corman's American International feature The Man With X-Ray Eyes – plus Corman's Morella entry in the Poe-themed anthology Tales Of Terror! The Man With X-Ray Eyes is one of those groovy soundtracks where the mood and style of the material matches the titles pretty greatly – "Penthouse", "Fast Twist", "Casino Lounge", "Posh" and more. Fun stuff! The Morella material is, appropriately more gothic horror themed and it's very well done at that! Includes "The Corpse And The Ghost", "Lenora/Morella/Fire & Smoke/Eerie House" and more. This great La La Land set also includes 4 bonus tracks from The Man With X-Ray Eyes.

Ray Bryant — Hollywood Jazz Beat ... LP
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good- .... $4.99
Ray Bryant's turning his heavy-hands version of the piano to a set of film themes here – grooving familiar numbers with a nice little soul jazz groove – but still also keeping a bit of a soundtrack feel! Richard Wess scored some larger arrangements for the record – providing a sweeping backdrop that's a nice foil for Ray's piano – and titles include "Exodus", "Laura", "Affair To Remember", "True Love", "Three Coins In A Fountain", "The High & The Mighty" and "On Green Dolphin Street".

Obscure spiritual avant garde material, recorded in San Francisco by the little-known sax player Ray Collins. Dojo Cuts — Dojo Cuts Featuring Roxie Ray ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2009. New Copy .... $16.99
A killer funk group – with one hell of a soulful singer! Roxie Ray's a newcomer to our ears, but she belts it out here like a classic funk diva from way back – working perfectly with the tight acoustic grooves of Dojo Cuts, who themselves have an equally classic groove! Ray goes way past obvious cliches in her singing – and manages to swing the tunes with a range we really love – a depth that might have most folks guessing she's a much older singer with experience from back in the day. Instrumentation includes guitar, tenor, trumpet, bass, and drums – and titles include "The 123s", "I Know You Didn't Mean It", "Love Me Right", "Say What You Mean", "You Make Lovin Real Easy", "Uptight", "The Bing", and "Something Going On".

Milt Jackson & Ray Charles — Soul Brothers ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1957. New Copy .... $15.99
One of the great jazz sessions that Ray Charles cut towards the end of his years at Atlantic Records – a surprisingly great little album with vibist Milt Jackson! The set really shows a side of Milt that didn't always surface in the Modern Jazz Quartet – and Charles is surprisingly great on piano (and even a bit of alto sax, which is mighty nice) – especially on the long tracks, which really let the players stretch out! Other players include the great Billy Mitchell on tenor sax, Skeeter Best on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and titles include "Blue Funk", "Cosmic Ray", "Soul Brothers", and "How Long Blues".

Quincy Jones & Ray Brown — Adventurers ... CD
Symbolic/Varese, 1970. New Copy .... $12.99 13.98
A rare groover from the team of Ray Brown and Quincy Jones – a smoking little set that completely revises the music for The Adventurers! The original score for the film featured tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim, played by Deodato – a great combination at the time, but completely different than the heavy funk laid out here by Ray and Quincy! The pair really cook things up strongly here – hitting some of the best funky vibes you'd hear on Quincy Jones scores from the late 60s and early 70s – or some of Ray Brown's funkiest jazz sessions of the time. Brown leads the band, and the set's produced by Quincy – who also arranged some tracks – with help from JJ Johnson, Tom Scott, and Jimmy Jones too. Titles include "Fat Cat Strut", "Polo Pony", "El Lobo's Marc", "Wishful Thinking", "Love Theme From The Adventurers", and "Go Down Dying".

A killer bit of Latin jazz from the 70s – one of the first records issued under the name of percussionist Ray Mantilla, and a really smoking set that features funky flute from Jeremy Steig, bass from Eddie Gomez, and both drums and keyboards from the mighty Joe Chambers! The tunes have a dynamic energy that's totally great – way more than just straight Latin, and proof that even at the start, Ray was always trying to reach some new directions with his music. The set begins with a tight "Percussion Intro", then rolls into a batch of original groovers titled "Inca Love Chant", "Chango Llama", "Caravanessa", and the nice long "Seven for Mantilla".

Rudy Ray Moore — Eat Out More Often ... LP
Kent, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Classic stuff – Rudy's first album, and a fitting launch to his famous career of party records and live club performances! The cover's got Rudy in front of a nude black model, laying back on the couch, and encouraging him to do the thing that's implied by the title – but the record itself is far more creative than just a bit of nasty words and sexy references. Rudy's at the top of his game here, bad rapping over a bit of music in a landmark effort that set the stage for countless other party records to come – but which is still presented here in one of its strongest examples. The set kicks off with an extended take on "Dolemite", with other tracks that include the funky groover "You Could Be Ugly Too", plus "Pimpin Sam", "So Glad I Could Come", and "Ballad Of A Boy & Girl".

Sonodisc/Favorite (France), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99
Pan-African rhythms from Ray Stephen Oche – topped with some great jazzy elements as well! The set's one of Ray's classics from the Paris scene – a set that draws heavily from his Nigerian roots, yet also takes full advantage of the wider cultural vibe going on in France at the time – echoes of free jazz in the instrumentation, righteous soulful elements in the vocals, and a complicated rhythmic approach that brings in plenty of funk from the other side of the Atlantic as well! The album's a killer all the way through – and tracks include "Kano City Sky", "Ayipe Assa", "At The Jazz Fountain", "Ada Ode", "Trumpet Calls The People Of Nigeria", "Peace Upon Kenemaland", and "Down Beat Special".

Ray Parker Jr — Other Woman ... LP
Arista, 1982. Near Mint- .... $2.99
Ray Parker steps out here with the other woman – with a groove that's somewhat different than his earlier sound with Raydio! There's a slightly sharper edge than before – almost a rockish influence in some of the instrumentation, which is a key factor in helping Parker's crossover in the 80s – one that had undeniable impact on the sound of other mainstream soul. At times, it's almost as if there's a slight hint of new wave inspiration in the rhythms and instrumentation – used very sparingly, but quite different than earlier Raydio funk and soul. Parker's vocals are more pronounced than before too – almost with a bite on the upbeat numbers – but warmly soulful on the mellower cuts, which we still like best. Titles include "Stay The Night", The Other Woman", "Street Love", "Let's Get Off", "Stop, Look Before You Leave", and "Let Me Go".

Don RayGarden Of Love ... CD
Malligator/Hot, 1978. Used .... $12.99
One of the coolest club projects of the 70s – a set of tracks based around the keyboards of Don Ray, but handled with lots of electronic disco touches from Cerrone! The pair are great arrangers on their own, but together they really make some magic – kind of a leaner take on the extended Cerrone groove – honed to a "t" in the studio, and sometimes given a nice punch with chorus vocals too. The tracks are shorter than you'd normally get from Cerrone, but still filled with all those freewheeling clubby grooves – warmly soulful undercurrents that make a great platform for the more electronic keyboards – never too cold at all, and a fair bit more personal than the sorts of keys we're used to hearing from the European scene. A really unique record – a partnership we wish worked together more like this, although we're plenty happy to have this treasure too! Titles include "Garden Of Love", "My Desire", "Body & Soul", "Got To Have Loving", and "Standing In The Rain".

JZ Productions, Early 2000s. New Copy .... $9.99
Joyous grooves from congolero Johnny Ray – a contemporary set of salsa tracks, put together with a mix of keyboards and acoustic instrumentation at the core! Ray's conga's lost none of its edge over the years, and helps direct the group with a nice rootsy vibe – even amidst the more modern keyboards – and singers in the group include Jose Davila and Sammy Gonzalez Jr. Titles include "Si No Soy Yo", "Estoy Amandote", "Te Quiero Un Monton", and "Ganas De Ti".

new Ricardo Ray & Bobby Cruz — Los Diferentes En Puerto Rico ... CD
Fonseca/Disco Hit, Mid 60s. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99
Very early work from the team of Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz – a stone cooker that shows that they were perfectly matched, right from the start! The rhythms are super-tight – way more so than on later recordings – and the instrumentation has all the jazzy flourishes that really seem to set the vocals soaring – a fluid, soulful style that really shows the changes this young pair were bringing to Latin music at the time! The whole thing's great – not really Latin soul, but a great precursor, with equally open energy – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Viva Richie Ray", "Yenyere Jala Jala", "Bravo De Verdad", "Mi Guaguanco", "El Montuno De Hoy", and "Pachanga Medley".

Rare film footage of The Rolling Stones – shot in the 1965 during brief tour of Ireland – with some of the earliest professional performance footage of the Stones, plus backstage and otherwise behjind-the-scenes action! While quite a bit of the fottage has been seen in one form or another over the years – often enough to have informed classic Stones lore, anyway – it's pretty amazing that it's only now being a presented as the true, underappreciated classic of early rock documentaries that it really is! Konnex (Germany), 2006. Used .... $12.99
The Total Improvisation unit of Siwula, Stowe, and Sage is augmented by the guitar of Dom Minasi – a player we know best from his mellow 70s album on Blue Note – but who steps out here as a bold improviser with talents to match the rest of the group! As on their previous session, the core trio have a style that's sometimes more tuneful than you'd expect from pure improvisation – a sensitivity that almost has little songs springing up between them, especially on some of the gentler moments. In addition to the guitar of Minasi, instrumentation includes piano from Nobu Stowe, alto and tenor from Blaise Siwula, and drums from Ray Sage. CD features 5 quartet numbers, plus 2 more trio titles.

Ray Stinnett — Fire Somewhere ... CD
Light In The Attic, 1971. New Copy .... $13.99
A rare early 70s record from guitarist, singer and songwriter Ray Stinnett – who was the guitar player for Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs at their wooliest and bulliest – and made this long-buried solo record for A&M in '71! Ray was born in Memphis, and after his success with Sam The Sham, he dropped out for a while in San Francisco before heading home to Memphis. A Fire Somewhere was recorded at Fame and Argent, and sure enough, it's got quite a swampy southern groove at times – but there's also some sparer acoustic numbers that carry a post-hippie vibe that he no doubt soaked up in San Francisco. It's hard to believe it's been shelved for such a long time! Includes "Salty Haze", "You Make Me-Feel", "Silky Path", "Wheel Of Time", "Stop", "Long Rivers Flow", "America", "You & I", "Honey Suckle Song", "Liberty High", "Natural High", "Love Is The Answer", "A Fire Somewhere" and "The Rain".

Ray Terrace — Home Of Boogaloo ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A fantastic record, and one of our most treasured Latin Soul albums from the late 60s! Ray Terrace leads a totally sharp little Latin combo through a host of originals and soulful covers, and the real highlight of the record is Willie Torres, who sings English vocals in a very deep soulful style that groovers perfectly with Ray's tight arrangements. The whole thing swings, and there's never a dead minute. We love this one all the way through – and it's a treasure to finally see reissued on vinyl! Tracks include "You've Been Talking 'Bout Me Baby", "Half Way Down", "Listen To Me", the totally great "I Make A Fool Of Myself", "Wade In The Water", "Get On Up", "Wiggle, Waggle", "There Is A Mountain" and more. That format is the only reason the record never got wider acclaim at the time – as it's a corker, and would easily have become one of the best-remembered electro-trash sets of the time – punky in attitude, but electro in presentation – and topped with some surprisingly sweet French language vocals from the lovely Zouka Dzaza. A monster! If you buy one Latin record this year – make it this one – because it's one of the greatest ever recorded! Ray's late 60s Acid album is a landmark recording – a sublime mixture of Latin jazz, percussion, and soul – grooving hard in a variety of styles, and always hitting the money on every single track. The title cut "Acid" is one of those tunes you'll be playing until you're locked up in a nursing home – and the rest of the record is equally great – with cuts like the bouncy groover "Soul Drummers", the tasty boogaloo "El Nuevo Barretto", and the extended "Espiritu Libre", a great Latin jazz track, with very "out" piano!

Tangerine/ABC, 1972. Very Good- .... $0.99 Just Sold Out!
A righteous early 70s set from Ray Charles – and a record with a much deeper vibe than you might guess from the image of Ray and some kids on the cover! Arrangements were handled by Quincy Jones, Sid Feller, and Mike Post – and the record is kind of a 70s take on the fuller modes that Charles explored for ABC during the 60s – moved into more contemporary territory with some sweet Fender Rhodes, full strings, and a funky undercurrent in some of the rhythms – never too forced or over the top, but in ways that makes some of the tunes sly steppers that work great with Charles' aging vocals. Titles include "Abraham Martin & John", "Heaven Help Us All", "There'll Be No Peace Without All Men As One", "Hey Mister", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong", and "What Have They Done To My Song Ma".

An obscure mid 80s session from the former members of The Moments – recorded with a style that's a bit more electric and a bit more mellow than before! The style here is almost in a smooth steppers mode, but the rhythms are sometimes more complicated – and although the electric keys and beats sometimes get in the way of the great harmonies we know the trio is capable of, there's still a fair bit more depth and soul going on here than most other mainstream soul of the period. A great Ray Barretto album from 1972 – one that beautifully showcases the master percussionist as he effortlessly shifts between Latin soul and 70's salsa styles! The group's nice and lean – with Adalberto Santiago on vocals, Papy Roman on trumpet, Louis Cruz on piano, and the great Andy Gonzalez on bass – a heck of a player whose solid rhythmic pulse was a big part of so many great albums of the time. Two great tracks make the album totally worth owning – "Right On" and "Power", both of are funky Latin soul numbers that are right out of Ray's Hard Hands period! Other tracks are equally great salsa numbers – and titles include "Y Dicen", "Perla Del Sur", and "Oye La Noticia".

Killer stuff all around! This album's a monster – one of Ray's greatest, with the same sort of Latin Soul groove heard famously on his classic Acid LP. The record has Ray cutting across many genres – blending Latin, soul, jazz, and a slight bit of funk – all into a set of grooves that never stops pleasing, and which will make you start digging through the Latin racks like mad, just to find another LP this great! Titles include "Hard Hands", "Abidjan", "Got to Have You", "New York Soul", and the fantastic track "Love Beads", which has a cool rolling piano line that sounds like a great De La Soul sample. It's a great track, and makes the entire album worth the price!

Fania, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
"Head Sounds" is a heck of a great way to describe this album – as it's filled with some of Ray's most mind-expanding cuts! The album kicks off with the tune "Acid", which you probably know from the album of the same name, but which still really does a great job of setting the pace here – and then it rolls into some fantastic longer cuts that really have a very strong jazz component. Ray and the group stretch out tremendously, hitting off-color notes and tones that almost make the record feel like one of Eddie Palmieri's jammers from the same time. 3 tracks on the set are over 8 minutes long, which should give you a good feel of the openness of the work – and titles include "Abidjan", "Espiritu Libre", "Drum Poem", and "Tin Tin Deo".

Fania, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Ray Barretto's hardest-hitting salsa albums of the 70s – a raw set of grooves that's got Ray moving away from the playfulness of the Latin Soul years, into a more righteous mode that's easily guessed at from the title of the set! The vibe here is very straightforward – with Ray coming down hard on conga, and working with a group that features Adalberto Santiago on lead vocals, plus Orestes Vilato on timbales, Andy Gonzalez on bass, and Luis Cruz on piano. The sound is spare and raw – and titles include the wonderfully echoey tune "O Elefante", with some great elephant-like work on trumpet – plus "Con El Cimarron", "Se Traba", "Arrepientete", and "Te Traigo Mi Son".

new Ray Bryant Trio — Con Alma (Jazz Masterpieces) ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pure genius from Ray Bryant – the kind of a record that few other players could ever hope to cut, and a fantastic demonstration of Ray's extremely soulful approach to the trio format! Bryant's working here with Bill Lee on bass and Mickey Roker on drums – in a triple-burning setting that has all players contributing equally to the groove – and often working strongly to create a great sense of counterpoint in the rhythms. Roker's drums are magically playful throughout – snapping and skipping along the top of the snare in a way that only furthers the rhythmic agenda of Bryant's piano. And Lee's bass has a laidback and mellow delight – one that rings out alongside the keys of the piano, and fleshes them out with some additional depth and color. The title track is a brilliant reading of "Con Alma", and the set also features Bryant's famous tune "Cubano Chant" – as well as the titles "Autumn Leaves", "Milestones", "Ill Wind", and "C Jam Blues".

Players include Manny Boyd on tenor and soprano sax, Tom Harrell on trumpet and flugelhorn, Niels Lan Doky on piano, and the great Alvin Queen on drums – and titles include "Maya's Dance", "Little Feet", "Driftin", "You Are My Love", "Dolphin Dance", and "What Is Happening Here".

The front image here isn't really one you'd want to put in a book of Latin Record cover art – but the record's another strong one from the time from Ricardo Ray & Bobby Cruz – a continuation of their blend of salsa rhythms and spiritual themes – quite unique for any artists of the time! The religion is upfront in the lyrics here, but the rhythms are still quite lively and Latin – and given that vocals are in Spanish, the message doesn't come across nearly as strongly to us Anglos – leaving us to focus most strongly on the overall sound of the record, which is still plenty darn great. new Three (Joe Sample, Ray Brown, Shelly Manne) — Three ... LP
Inner City, 1976. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly one of the most successful Japanese piano trio recordings of the 70s – a super-session performed by a group that includes Joe Sample on acoustic piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums! Given that Sample's best known during the era for his electric keys with the Crusaders (and on countless studio sessions), it's a real treat to hear him tickle the ivories in an acoustic way – and a genuine surprise to hear how strong his work is in such a format. Joe manages to swing the tunes with plenty of creative improvisation, but also keeps a strong focus on the groove too – making for an album that's got some of the rhythmic flourishes of the best work of the Oscar Peterson trio in later years, but with some of the added freedoms of the Japanese scene. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Round Midnight", "Funky Blues", "Manha Do Carnaval", "Yearnin", and "Satin Doll".

new Ray Brown/Milt Jackson — Much In Common ... LP
Verve, 1964. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
One of the first albums in what was to become a very successful pairing – the bass of Ray Brown and the vibes of Milt Jackson, working here in a down-homier setting that was miles away from his work with the MJQ! The set's got a light jazzy backing on most tracks – with some guitar from Kenny Burrell, some piano by Hank Jones, and some organ by Wild Bill Davis – and about half the tracks on the set feature vocals by gospel singer Marion Williams, singing here in a jazz/gospel style that comes across with a lot less of the hoke than you'd expect. Titles include "What Kind Of Fool Am I", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "Nancy", "Much In Common", and "Gravy Blues".
(Cover has light wear, a bit of light staining, and a tack hole in three corners.)

new Ray Charles — Live In Concert ... LP
ABC, 1964. Used .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
A classic live set from Ray Charles – one that equally showcases all the best sides of his sound in the mid 60s! The group's got a nice dose of jazz – which it shows right at the start – almost a mix of Basie swing and R&B, of the sort that Ray was sporting heavily in the late Atlantic years, but didn't always get to display in the countrified early years on ABC – and players include David Fathead Newman on tenor, Hank Crawford on alto, and Julian Priester on trombone – all horn players who really help the whole thing swing! Ray plays some great piano alongside his vocals – and tunes include rollicking versions of "I Got A Woman", "You Don't Know Me", "Makin' Whoopee", "Hallelujah I Love Her So", and "What'd I Say".
