Etta James — Complete Private Music Blues, Rock, & Soul Albums (7CD set) ... CD
Private/Sony, 1990s/2000s. New Copy 7 CDs .... $52.99 59.98
A later chapter in the career of soul singer Etta James – six full albums, plus a bonus disc of live material too! The set represents most of Etta's work from recent years – a series of albums done for the Private Music label – in styles that range a bit more than before, yet still come across with plenty of the soul you'll know from Etta's roots. Production is definitely a bit more modern at times, yet the vocals are still top-shelf – whether in a more blues-based setting, or one that's going for a crossover vibe instead. Packaging is great – all CDs come in LP-styled sleeves – and titles include Love's Been Rough On Me, Life Love & The Blues, Matriarch Of The Blues, Burnin Down The House, Let's Roll, and Blues To The Bone – plus a bonus CD, Live In San Francisco!

Swing Out Sister — Private View (CD/DVD) ... CD
Miso/Shanachie, 2012. New Copy CD & DVD .... $22.99 24.99
We've loved Swing Out Sister for more than a few years – and over that time, the duo's only gotten better! It's records like this that keep us coming back again and again – a brilliant blend of soul currents and hook-heavy arrangements that feel like a blend of late 60s UK and the best of the contemporary global Neo Soul underground! Corinne Drewery's vocals grab us right away with their depth and upfront sense of personality – and the sweet keyboards of Andy Connell hold the whole thing together with the kind of jazzy undercurrents the group has had since their start. The set includes some sweet remakes of older tunes – and titles include "You On My Mind", "Incomplete Without You", "Notgonnachange", "Am I The Same Girl", "Breakout (fabulous party mix)", "Mama Didn't Raise No Fool", and "Now You're Not Here (Taj Calder inst)". Plus, this special package also features a bonus DVD – a full length concert, titled Tokyo Stories – as well as a special book with rare photos, an essay on the group, and a personal message too!

new Jeff Lorber — Private Passion ... CD
Warner, 1986. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Jeff Lorber's mid 80s amalgams of tight fusiony keyboard grooves and r&b – probably his most r&b oriented albums ever – with soulful vocals on most tracks and a tight focus on a crisp groove! Lorber's synths and programming provide the fusiony foil for the soulful vocals of Karyn White and Michael Jefferies on a number of tracks, but there are some sweet instrumental groovers, too – such as the Caribbean inflected "Jamaica", and "Kristen" with more extroverted soloing from Lorber and a nice turn on fluegelhorn from Freddie Hubbard. Other titles include "Facts Of Love", "True Confessions", "Back In Love", "Private Passion", "Sand Castles", "Keep On Lovin' Her" and "Midnight Snack".

new Benny Westmore & His Private Numbers — (I'm Gonna Live 'Til I'm) One Hundred Years Old/Do The Monkey Tramp ... 7-inch
Papa Bill, 2013. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gritty throwback to the raw 60s R&B from Montreal's Benny Westmore & His Private Numbers. "(I'm Gonna Live 'Til I'm) One Hundred Years Old" is a lively number, backed by some heavy drums, punchy brass and a nice bit of electric guitar. "Do The Monkey Tramp" also has an old school rhythm & blues backdrop, but Benny goes wilder here on the vocal time – with some of wooliest, grittiest lead vocals we've heard on funk or soul single in quite a while – sweetened a bit by some nice female backing vocals.

new Hall & Oates — Private Eyes ... LP
RCA, 1981. Used .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
What can we say? We winced at this one back when it came out, but over the years, it's got a real "Free Soul" appeal to us – with vocals that are surprisingly soulful in parts, some nice 80s mellow soul instrumentation, and even a few hooks that are real guilty pleasures. Includes the smooth grooving "I Can't Go For That", plus "Mano A Mano", "Did It In A Minute", "Head Above Water", "Your Imagination", and (ugh) "Private Eyes".

new Bonnie Pointer — If The Price Is Right (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Private I/FTG, 1984. New Copy .... $14.99 18.99 Out Of Stock
Bonnie Pointer sounding great in the mid 80s– on a hard-to-find album cut for Private I/CBS after a drawn out split with Motown – one that finds her in a prime, catchy dancefloor R&B mode! To our ears, If The Price Is Right holds up as well as a lot of the pop soul of the period, including Bonnie's siblings The Pointer Sisters – though it obviously didn't hit as hugely! It's got crisp keyboards, programming and 80s boogie, but there's also some room for more more tender balladry and chugging club soul reminiscent of the late disco years. Of course, Bonnie's lovely, soulful voice is the most important characteristic. An overlooked album that's well worth catching up with! Include "Premonition", "Johnny", "Come Softly To Me", "Under The Influence Of Love", "Your Touch", "Tight Blue Jeans", "There's Nobody Quite Like You" and "If The Price Is Right". This FTG CD has a whopping 9 bonus tracks – single, club, dub and extended 12" mixes and more – including "Your Touch (Club Version)", "Premonition (Dance Version)", "There's Nobody Quite Like You (Single Version)", "The Beast In Me (12" Version)", "Heaven" from The Heavenly Bodies soundtrack.

new Michael Zager Band — Let's All Chant (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Private Stock/Cherry Pop (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A crossover classic from the Michael Zager Band – a record that played big in the clubs at the end of the 70s, and got plenty of spins on the homefront too! The title track is a massive classic – with its instantly-memorable "Let's All Chant" groove – and unique rhythm that was perfect for the period's move from straight disco to some bouncier styles of 80s club – particularly the roller skating mode! Yet there's also some other great disco material on the set too – tunes that bounce along with trademark female chorus vocals – mostly sounding pretty darn great on numbers like "Soul To Soul", "Love Express", "Freak", and "Music Fever" – and faltering slightly on the offbeat "Dancin Disney" medley – a batch of Disney tunes set to disco grooves! CD also features "Let's All Chant (12" disco version)" and "Freak (12" disco version)".

Audio featuring Vince Broomfield — New Beginnings ... LP
Soul Junction (UK), Early 80s. New Copy .... $20.99
Unreleased soul from Vince Broomfield – a singer and saxophone player with a warm and smooth style! The work here is all from private recordings of the late 80s and early 90s, and has a sound that echoes mainstream R&B of the period, but which is served up in a much more stripped-down approach overall – one that offers up some nice indie elements that help keep things fresh, especially on the album's mellow steppers! All tracks are original – and titles include "My Girl", "I've Been Watching You", "She's Gone", "I've Got You Back", "Just What The Doctor Ordered", and "Rain Rain Go Away".

Richard Crandell — In The Flower Of Our Youth ... LP
Tompkins Square, 1980. Near Mint- (reissue).... $6.99
Melodic, beautiful, but still pretty adventurous solo guitar from Richard Crandell – originally a private press release, from a player that turned out to be pretty influential to guitar gurus such as Leo Kottke, who recorded "Rebecca" – plus a Crandell piece was included on Numero's fantastic Wayfaring Strangers Guitar Soli compilation. In The Flower Of Youth is a sometimes lovely, sometimes fairly brooding set, and he balances incredible technique and mastery with gut level emotion very well! Titles include the title track, "Rebecca", "Diagonal", "Shamrock", "Delta Triad", "Assembly Line", "Mount Shasta" and more.

Dells — Love Connection (with bonus track) ... CD
Mercury/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977. New Copy .... $13.99
One thing you have to remember about The Dells – they always sound great! Even here, in later years, their sound is superb – a rich, deep approach to harmonies that's still head and shoulders above most other groups in the business! The production on the set is by Norman Harris and the Harris Machine – and some tracks get a Philly groove on, while others stick in a mellower ballad mode that's completely dominated by the group. Niceness abounds, and titles include "Private Property", "God Helps Those", "Don't Trick Me, Treat Me", "Wasted Tears", and "How Can One Man Be So Lucky". CD features a bonus track – a US single edit of "Private Property".

Duke Ellington — Ellington Suites ... LP
Pablo, 1959/1971/1972. Very Good .... $1.99
Three slices of rare work by Duke Ellington – all recorded previously as semi-private recordings, and issued here in a short-lived 70s set! As you'd guess by the title, the tracks are all in "suite" form – that broader compositional style that dominated Ellington's later work, one in which he brought together complicated ideas with a very unified feel – often based around a single theme, but fleshed out beautifully with modes that were even more sophisticated than in his earlier work. Side one features "The Queen's Suite", recorded in 1959 with mostly full orchestra, but also a spare passage of just piano and bass – and side two features "The Goutelas Suite" from 1971, and "The Uwis Suite" from 1972.

Donnie & Joe Emerson — Dreamin Wild ... CD
Light In The Attic, 1979. New Copy .... $12.99
Fuzzy and genuinely well-crafted private press grooves from the Emerson brothers – with crazy good hooks, some surprisingly solid musicianship – and songs that range from straight-up catchy, though fuzz-drenched rock, to funk and soul! Donnie Emerson is the lead singer, guitarist and bass player, along with some synth – and on the best tunes, he's got a confident, laidback and warm style on vocals that truly doesn't feel the voice of a kid still in his teens – with brother Joe on drums and other friends on backing vocals here and there. Here's a record that profoundly transcends the private press novelty and the goofy jumpsuits they're rocking on the front cover! Includes "Good Time", "Give Me The Chance", "Baby", the instrumental groover "Feels Like The Sun", "Love Is", "Don't Go Lovin' Nobody Else", "Dream Full Of Dreams" and "My Heart".

Foreign Exchange, 2011. Used CD & DVD .... $15.99
A double disc CD & DVD package showcasing one of our favorite souful acts on the contemporary landscape – Nicolay & Phonte's brilliant and ever-evolving Foreign Exchange project! Dear Friends showcases an acoustic concert performed for a private audience –- the great touring lineup that includes Zo!, Sy Smith, and singer/songwriter Jeanne Jolly. From the get go, we've been impressed by both the original songwriting from Foreign Exchange as well as the way they filter diverse influences into their own unique vibe – and this acoustic setting really gets to the heart and soul of it. This is an essential document for fans of the group, but it's also a fine intro if you're just now coming aboard! Weldon Irvine — Weldon & The Kats Vol 1(Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Nodlew/Shout (Japan), Early 80s. New Copy .... $24.99
Rare work from Weldon Irvine – a selection of tracks recorded as private studio outings, reissued briefly by Luv N Haight in the early 90s, and then only on vinyl! The style here is much more jazz-based than some of Irvine's soul recordings – a mode that's often all instrumental, and which features Weldon playing more acoustic piano than on his 70s fusion classics – but usually mixed in with sweet electric elements, too – which creates this wonderfully righteous balance in the music! The whole thing's very soulful, with plenty of undercurrents of the RCA years – and guest players include Steve Grossman on tenor, Marcus Miller on bass, Tom Browne on trumpet, and Bobby Broom on guitar – the latter 3 of which all worked with Weldon at GRP, making us guess that some of these 80s sides were intended for release on that label. Titles include "Kundabuffer", "Music Is The Key", "Mr PC", "We Can Try Again", and "Blues For Spike". CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – including "Blue In Green", "Heard It All Before", "It's Funky", "Shopping", "The Sisters", "Think I'll Stay A While", and "Misty Dawn" – all only ever on the Sisters album, making their first appearance here on vinyl.

Juicy — Spread The Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/FTG, 1987. New Copy .... $14.99 18.99
A great later album from the Juicy duo – very much in the tightly grooving mode of their debut, thanks to continued production work by Deodato! The style's smooth, focused, and sharp-edged – but all without sounding too chart-oriented or clunky – and although the beats are electric, and supported with plenty of keyboards, there's a nice sense of warmth to the record overall – a key hallmark of Deodato's sensitivity in the studio. All tracks are originals by the Juicy team of Jerry and Katreese Barnes, and guests on the record include Chaka Khan and Bernard Wright. Titles include "Make You Mine", "All Work No Play", "Show & Tell", "After Loving You", "Private Party", "Serious", and "Midnight Love". CD features bonus tracks – "All Work No Play (all work mix)", "All Work No Play (all play mix)", and "All Work No Play (going left)".

This is an amazing anthology from Heavy Light/Light In The Attic that pulls together material from private press 45s the group put in the early-to-mid 70s and previously unreleased tracks recorded by Texas music legend Huey P Meaux. There's a raw soul, funky drums & percussion core to Kool & Together's style that's really great! Singer Tyrone Sanders doubles as the group's conga player, which is a great touch! There's a demonstrable level of gritty psych soul and rock in the mix, too – wah wah guitar, in particular – but they're much more into a tight, heady groove than the kind of lumbering heft and solo-heavy styles of other Hendrix disciples. It's a family band – the earliest tracks on the set feature Charles Sanders Sr on vocals, with Charles Jr on guitar, Tyrone on conga and Joe Sanders on drums – with the boys trading lead vocals and instrumentation on other later recordings, along with additional players. A great discovery from Heavy Light Records! 19 tracks in all: "Sittin' On A Hot Red Stove", "I Know", "If You Can", "Wino Man", "Magic Words", "Peace Is At Hand", "Better Days", "Fly So High", "Electronic Funk", "Reaching Out", "Hooked On Life", "Blow It Out Your Mind", "Get Your Feet Off The Ground" and more, plus 4 demos: "Escapism Beat", "Hot Pants", "Nassau Beat" and "Wino Man".

Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam — Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam With Full Force (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Big Break (UK), 1985. New Copy .... $14.99
An 80s pop soul classic from Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam With Full Force – with a sound that's insistent and irresistible to this day! This is a solid album full of tunes that stand up strongly with their unstoppable hit singles of the period. Yes, the sound would get a bit too cutesy and played out by the end of the 80s, if you lived through those years, but it's amazing how nice it sounds all these years later! There's a heavy dose of electro and early hip hop creeping in, throughout the album – and the breakout "I Wonder If I Take You Home" is one of our favorite mid 80s mainstream R&B jams – straight up! Also includes "Can You Feel The Beat", "You'll Never Change", "All Cried Out", "This Is Cult Jam", "Behind My Eyes", "Private Property" and "Take Me Home (Rap)". 5 bonus versions on this Big Break CD edition: the 12" Full Force Remixes of "I Wonder If I Take You Home", "Can You Feel The Beat", plus "I Wonder If I Take You Home (Shep Pettibone Remix)", "Beat The Feel You Can (12" Dub Mix)" and "If I Take You Home (Cult Jam Dub Edit)".

Warne Marsh — Live In Hollywood ... LP
Xanadu, 1951. Very Good .... $14.99
70s issue of a great little live set – recorded in LA in 1951, one of those private recordings from the time that saw brief release on the Xanadu label. Tracks are long, and Warne's playing in a much more open-ended mode with a quartet that features Hampton Hawes, Joe Mondragon, and Shelly Manne. Tracks include "Fine & Dandy", "You Go To My Head", "Buzzy", and "I Got Rhythm".
(Cover has a small cut corner and some wear.)

Moolah — Woe Ye Demons Possessed ... CD
EM (Japan), 1974. New Copy .... $20.99
A stunner! Moolah's Woe Ye Demons Possessed is a spacious, sometimes spooky experimental rock record from the mid 70s –with a loose, post psychedelic blend of drums, keyboards, electronics and all around loosely hypnotic atmoshere that's in some ways reminiscent of what was happening on the German avant rock landscape at the time – but it's actually the private press work of a New York duo! Krautrock-evocative elements aside, there's a strange, cosmic and spiritual vibe at play here that's really unlike anything else we can think of. It's mostly instrumental, with some Eastern mystic-inpired vocals here and there. The vibe gets heavier and dronier as it goes along, making this a really cool, slow-building trip! Includes "Crystal Waters", "Terror Is Real", "Courage", "The Hard Hit", "Mirrors" and "Redemption".

Olympics/Marathons — Olympics Meet The Marathons ... LP
Collectables, Early 60s. Near Mint- .... $3.99
A great batch of harmony vocal tracks – nearly all of them with an upbeat, kind of silly approach – similar to The Coasters at their best! The Olympics owed a lot to the late 50s Atco recordings The Coasters did with Lieber & Stoller – and they had a similar tight-lipped approach, with lots of vocal tricks, and a set of song themes that runs through the dregs of pop culture of the time – titles like "The Slop", "Little Pedro", and "Private Eye". Other tracks include "Baby Hully Gully (parts 1 & 2)", "Dance By The Light Of The Moon", and "Big Boy Pete". The Marathons were actually The Vibrations – recording under another name, to showcase their more novelty type numbers – again like The Coasters, and also a bit like The Cadillacs. Titles by them include "Oink Jones", "Chicken Spaceman", "Tight Sweater", "Peanut Butter", and "Talkin Trash".
(UK pressing on Ace. Cover has a cut corner.)

Time Lag Records, 1969. New Copy Gatefold .... $8.99
A largely unheard psychedelic gem from the end of the 60s – originally private pressed by the group of suburban NY teenagers responsible for the wild sound! There's a cosmic rock groove and a bit of doe-eyed innocence in these cute odes to mind expansion – with freewheeling guitars, hand percussion, keys and a conversational vocal style that sounds like a wildly tripping, speak-singing Neil Young! Titles include "Flower", "Nostalgia Trip", "Reflections", "Do You Think About Me?", "White Light", "Relax", "My Lonely Friend", "Andrea", and "The Goodnight Song" – plus bonus tracks that include demos and live recordings!

Red Rippers — Over There. . .And Over Here ... CD
Paradise Of Bachelors, 1983. New Copy .... $12.99
A cool combat-themed country rock record by The Red Rippers – largely the work of songwriter and Vietnam veteran Lt. Edwin Bankston – and a pretty riveting obscurity from the early 80s private press vaults! The sounds range from breezy, Creedence-styled backdrops and 70s outlaw country inspired grooves, to more of a fuzzed out, slightly harder-edged feel – but it's the lyricism that really pushes Red Rippers into a different realm. It's full of war-wizened songs about forgotten soldiers, bloody jungle battles and other prideful and mournful tales from this veteran's point of view! The difference between the catchy, if quite raw tunefulness and the frank lyricism gives it a really dichotomous, intriguing feel! Includes "I Roll", "Soldier Of Fortune", "Firefight", "Who Remembers", "Vietnam Blues", "The Dark And Bloody Road", "She's Been Down", "Body Bag".

Rich Ristagno — What Would It Be Like To Be Rich? ... LP
Drag City, 1981. New Copy .... $18.99
A should-be private press classic from Detroit's Rich Ristagno – a record he had pressed up, but didn't see through to release – and a wild, but pretty amazing mix of murky post disco funk, soul and rock! Recorded quickly and on the cheap, you can sort of hear an aspiration to make a late 70s style groove rock record – something along the lines of the Steve Miller – but the threadbare production and instrumental accompaniement courtesy of area funk band Solar Flight gives it oddball, but compelling feel all its own. There's some primitive electronic touches, too, that bear unintended, but real similarities to groups like Suicide. A cool discovery from Drag City! Includes "God's In The Chips", "I'm The Poorest", "Women Thinkin'", "Eye Of Love", "Not Good Enough", "There Are People", "Coming From", "England", "Eileen Reach", "Richman Poorman", "Never At The Top", "What Is A Man", "See Me Hear Me" and "Trace It Down".

Kurtis Scott — If You Feel It (Get Up And Dance)/Uncrowned Champion– Music & Poetry Of Kurtis Scott (45 & book) ... 7-inch
Peoples Potential, 1980s. New Copy 7" + Book (pic cover).... $8.99
The coolest funky 45 package we've seen yet from Peoples Potential – featuring Kurtis Scott's private press low-fi cosmic funk jams "If You Feel It" and "Get Up And Dance" – plus a booklet with a brief bio, black & white photos and the poetry of Curtis Futch Jr, aka Curtis Scott! We’re not sure of the dates of recordings for the tunes – there's an 80s basement funk atmosphere, though, and it serves these jams for the better, in our opinions. Raw funk and vocals highlight "If You Feel It (Get Up And Dance)" (you just might do that), tripped out by some echo – and the cosmic wierdness hits washes over fully on the flip "Uncrowned Champion". They booklet is nicely put together, too!

Jimmy Smith — House Party ... LP
Blue Note, Late 50s. Very Good- .... $5.99
One of the best hard-wailing all-star sessions that Jimmy did so well for Blue Note! The album features an amazing array of top-line players – like Tina Brooks, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Lou Donaldson, Art Blakey, and Kenny Burrell – and they all play with Smith in differing combinations, all of which have an open-ended groove that sounds very nice, and very much like the kind of material that Smith would have laid down at some small club in the late 50s. Titles include "Blues After All", "Au Private", and "Lover Man".

Sounds Of Tomorrow — Sounds Of Tomorrow ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $7.99
Moogy, groovy, and really wonderful stuff – a set of rare private recordings made by the team of Scott Ludwig and Maximillian Crook, both electric inventors and very groovy musicians in their own right! The pair have a bit of a connection to Del Shannon – who used their Musitron instrument on the chorus of his hit "Runaway" – and a few of these tracks were actually produced by Shannon himself, in later years away from pop fame. But over and above that brief connection to mainstream pop, this work more than stands out on its own – and crackles with a sound that's simple, yet intense – almost a 60s garage rock aesthetic applied to electronic instrumentation, with a result that's got the appeal of some of Bruce Haack's work, but none of the child-like themes. Ludwig's playing the Sonocon and Crook is on the Musitron – both instruments of their own invention, and with a fuzzed-up approach to analogue electronics – and the CD features a range of material from in-home recordings and a rare live date! Titles include "Beeswax", "Our Electronic Bag", "Space Child", "Hero", "Punk Walk", "Firefighter's Theme", "The Diamond", "Runaway", "Caravan", "Hawaiian Vibes", and "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight".

Very late material from Art Tatum – recorded at a private party in LA in 1956, and featuring the piano genius working his way through spare complicated solo versions of standards. Titles include "Yesterdays", "Body & Soul", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "I'll Never Be The Same", "Tenderly", "Begin The Beguine", and "Willow Weep For Me". The excellent follow up to folk guitar great Harry Taussig's Fate Is Only Once album – appropriately titled Fate Is Only Twice – and it's only been 47 years since Fate struck for the first time! Fate Is Only Once was a mid 60s private press rarity, thankfully reissued by the obscure folk heroes at Tompkins Square – so it's fitting that Tompkins Square would see this worthy contemporary sequel into release. It's got a similarly brilliant mix of meditative, unfussy, but incredibly accomplished acoustic folk and blues instrumentals. A solo guitar stunner! Includes "Rondo In D – On Southern Tmemes", "Children's Dance", "Der Dritte Man Fantasia", "Living In The City", "In The Corner Of The Circle", "Perpetuum Mobile Revisited", "Azure", "Fate Is Only Twice" and more.

Tony Caro & John — Blue Clouds ... LP
Drag City/Galactic Zoo Disk, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $16.99
Beautiful, strange – and strangely beautiful stuff from Tony Dore, Caroline Dore and John Clark – who are best-remembered by 70s rare folk diggers as Tony Caro & John! The trio's All On The First Day is one of greater private press records of the early 70s to a get some love much later down the road – and as hard to find as that record was before some reissue action, it turns out that some of their completely unreleased recordings are just as sweet! Most of the songs are from a bit later in the 70s, but they carry on with the psych folk spirit and vocal harmonies of their earlier craft – and with a bit more keyboard experimentation here and there. Strong lead and harmony vocals and a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation. 11 great songs: "Forever And Ever", "Bye Bye I Love You", "Home", "Sally Free And Easy", "Where The Elephants Go To Die", "Ton Ton Macoutes", "Swirling Sphere", "Pretty Saro" and "Children Of Plenty", plus 2 live tracks from London in '74: "There Are No Greater Heroes" and "The Road To Avalon".

Barney Wilen — Moshi Too – Unreleased Tapes Recorded In Africa 1969 to 1970 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy .... $22.99
Amazing music from the legendary Barney Wilen – previously unreleased African recordings, done around the same time as his classic Moshi album! Although Wilen was best known as a hardbop giant in both his later and early years, the late 60s also marked a period of really rich experimentation – when Barney, like some of his other contemporaries, was really trying to break out of any traditional formats for jazz – and really take chances with new musical hybrids! In this case, Wilen's blowing with a whole host of different musicians from various African scenes – especially Zanzibar – mixing his own incredible tenor and other reeds with regional percussion, unusual instrumentation, vocals, and even some trippier electric touches too – all served up in a blend of music and sounds that's as much an ethnographic project as it is a conventional jazz album. This special set features 80 minutes of previously-unreleased tracks that never made it onto the first Moshi album – which was issued by Saravah Records in the early 70s – rare tracks that have come from Wilen's private archives, and which are every bit as amazing as the music on the original album. Titles include "Black Locomotive", "Moshi Too","Fullys In The Bush", "Serenade For Africa", "Barka De Sala", "Fete A Tam II", "Leave Before The Gospel", "Zombizar Reloaded", "Bumba Ciagalo", and "Kira Burundi".

Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
Stellar material that Ike Turner produced in just a couple years for Modern Records – in many cases, with Ike also given the songwriting credit – New Orleans & LA recordings from '63-'65! Ike was one incredible vessel of pure musical talent and ingenuity – overshadowed badly by that red hot hell of a public and private life. That's a shame for a number of reasons, but the work speaks for itself. What's most incredible here, is that other voices speak for their own immense talent as well as Ike's work behind the scenes. It's get great, rare material by Ike & Tina Revue & Kings Of Rhythm members and others. 27 tracks in all: "Darkest Hour", "I Smell Trouble", "Feel So Good" and more by Jimmy Thomas, "All In My Mind" by Tina Turner, "In Love" by Jackie Brenston & The Ikettes, "That's All Right" and "You're So Fine" by Vernon Guy, "Think" by Bobby John & The Ikettes, "Walking Down The Aisle" by Ike Turner & The Ikettes and more.

Various — Light On The Southside – Photographs Of Chicago Southside Nightlife 1975 to 1977 (hardcover book with 2LP set) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s/2009. New Copy 2LP & Book .... $52.99 59.98
Quite possibly the most beautiful record we've ever seen from the folks at The Numero Group – and that's saying a lot, given the quality of all their top-shelf releases! This beautiful edition features a hardcover book of vintage black and white photographs taken on Chicago's south side in the mid 70s – images of patrons and proprietors from long-lost nite spots that include Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, and The Showcase Lounge – all the kind of clubs that were likely to feature the sort of Chicago funk and soul that Numero's been reissuing for the past few years! The images are amazing – a really rare look into the community that supported this sort of music – caught far far from the mainstream, in placed that were almost even private, compared to more well-travelled entertainment outlets. Photographs come from the collection of Michael Abramson – and are beautifully reproduced on LP-sized pages, in a book that also features some vintage flyers, posters, and business cards from the clubs! And if that's not enough, Numero also throws in some great notes of their own, and a bonus 2LP set with music that includes "I'm A Streaker Baby" by Arelean Brown, "No Better Time Than Now" by Ricky Allen, "The Same One" by Malcolm Simmons, "You Made Me Suffer" by Andrew Brown, "This Is My Prayer" by Lady Margo, "It's A Dream" by Little Ed & The Soundmasters Band, "I Sayed That" by Slim Willis Band, "Bring It Down Front" by Hugh Hawkins, "Womans Lib" by Lucille Spann, "Gimmie Some Of Yours" by Artie White, "Baby" by Walter Butterball Davis, "Is It Because I'm Black (inst)" by Syl Johnson, "Goose Walk" by Little Mack, "Young Blood" by Detroit Jr, "California Lady" by James Kinds & Stack, and "I Learned My Lesson" by Willie Davis. The albums are packaged in their own Numero-like cover – then nestled in a slipcover with the book – a hell of a sweet set at this price, and it also comes with an introduction by Nick Hornby!

Melvyn grew up outside of Detroit, and he cut his teeth with the freeform Afrikan Folk Ensemble before relocating to Sweden in the 60s, where he thrived in the country's healthy and creative jazz scene. Paradise Of Bachelors, 1983. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A cool combat- themed country rock record by The Red Rippers – largely the work of songwriter and Vietnam veteran Lt. Includes "I Roll", "Soldier Of Fortune", "Firefight", "Who Remembers", "Vietnam Blues", "The Dark And Bloody Road", "She's Been Down", "Body Bag".

new These Trails — These Trails ... LP
Drag City, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hawaiian psych folk from songwriters Margret Morgan and Patrick Cockett – who sing and play guitar, dulcimer, slide and tabla – backed by more guitar, sitar, vocals, ipu, feet and all kinds of dreamy charm on the rare and legendary These Trails album! The songs are uniquely, brilliantly influenced by their surroundings – the trails of the mountains of Kaua'i – without a tourist's cliché of Hawaii to be found, though. Lovely, somewhat strange post psychedelic folk rock unlike anything else! Titles include "These Trails", "Our House In Hanalei", "El Rey Pescador", "Waipoo", "Garden Botanum", "Rapt Attention" and more.
(A great Drag City reissue of the private press gem – with notes by Rob Sevier of The Numero Group.)

new Unlimited Touch — Unlimited Touch ... LP
Prelude, 1981. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent bit of 80s groove! Unlimited Touch have a cool 2-female lead vocal style – and they keep it tight and soulful on grooves that have a nice tight club sound, in a style that often reminds us of Roy Ayers produced albums, like Ladies Of The 80s, or some of the more uptempo tracks on the Ramp album. The record's one of the more soulful efforts to come out on the Prelude label at the time – and it's got lots of nice tracks like "Private Party", "In The Middle", "Happy Ever After", and "I Hear Music In The Streets".

new Jermaine Jackson — Dynamite (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/FTG, 1984. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Maybe not dynamite, but an album that definitely has an explosive feel right from the start – thanks to some 80s grooves that really help re-ignite the solo career of Jermaine Jackson! Jermaine's soaring vocals are right at home in these beat-heavy arrangements – sparkling with a sense of soul and a great ear for a catchy chorus, yet somehow never sounding too commercial overall – really a great surprise, given what you might expect from the album! That trademark Jackson ear for a tune is right on the money – and the set features a few duet cuts – including "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" with Michael Jackson, "Take Good Care Of My Heart" with Whitney Houston, "When The Rain Begins To Fall" with Pia Zadora, and "Escape From The Planet Of The Ant Men" with Randy and Tito Jackson. Solo cuts include "Dynamite", "Sweetest Sweetest", "Oh Mother", "Come To Me", and "Some Things Are Private". CD features 5 bonus tracks that include "Sweetest Sweetest (US rmx)", "Come To Me (12" rmx)", "Do What You Do (12" rmx)", "Dynamite (12" rmx)", and "When The Rain Begins To Fall (12" voc with breakdown)".
(Out of print. CD case has a cutout hole.)

Sinecure, 2013. New Copy .... $64.99 Out Of Stock
An amazing little book, and one hell of a lifelong research project – a huge volume that documents deep details about the American underground of vanity, or "private" press records – obscure pieces of wax that were usually just pressed up by an artist for their own pleasure – but which have gone onto reach the status of legend over time! The format is a genre unto itself – even though the music style can vary widely – and the lavish book brings together a huge amount of rare covers and images, along with notes on the recordings – plus hundreds of reviews, an essay on the format, and even biographies of collectors and enthusiasts who've helped unearth this lost American treasure! Also comes with a download for dozens of tracks, and a cool clear 7" single – and book is over 500 pages, in color, with a very heavy cover!

new Santucci-Scoppa — Jazzissima – Italian Library Jazz Series Vol 1 ... CD
Black Cat (Italy), 1971. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Excellent obscure jazzy groovers from the groundbreaking team of Cicci Santucci and Enzo Scoppa! Cicci plays trumpet and Enzo plays tenor – and the pair had chops sharp enough to play with the best of the Italian jazz scene of the 70s, but which also graced more than a fair share of private "sound library" recordings of the same time. The grooves are nice and tight, and the pair play with tight rhythm backing by Franco D'Andrea on piano, Bruno Briaco on drums, and Bruno Tomasson on bass – in a great mode that mixes bossa, bop, and mod styles with effortless ease, and which sounds like a classic Blue Note 60s release during its best moments, touched with some of the electricity of the post-Miles generation! Titles include "Wipe Look", "Spirale", "Trip", "Run Run", "Pressa", "Pausa", "Disoccupazione", "Primo Turno", and "Deep Look".

new Various — Nighttime Lovers Vol 16 – A Fine Collection Of Disco Funk Classics Of The 80s ... CD
PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
A solid compilation of dancefloor soul from the early 80s – one of the best yet in the long-running Nighttime Lovers series from Vinyl Masterpiece – with tracks by Luther Vandross, The Brothers Johnson, Cool Runners, Carl Carlton, Mtume, Freddie Jackson, The Chi-Lites, Stanley Clarke and more! The entire series has done a nice job of putting together bigger names and comparably forgotten ones – but even with the more legendary groups and singers, they go way past the obvious hits. It's a very well sequenced selection on Vol 16 – dancefloor ready soul and a nice set of songs! Includes "I Wanted Your Love" by Luther Vandross, "Kick It To The Curb" by Brothers Johnson, "Private Party" by Carl Carlton, "Nobody Else" by Karen Silver, "I Don't Understand It" by Scott White, "Stop What You're Doing" by The Chi-Lites, "Heaven Sent You" by Stanley Clarke, "Shout For Joy" by Dunn & Bruce Street and more. 13 tracks in all.

new Various — Nighttime Lovers Vol 17 – A Fine Collection Of Disco Funk Classics Of The 80s ... CD
PTG (Netherlands), Mid 80s. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Hard to see how these nighttime folks get any lovin done – give that the grooves in the series are always so great, we're bound to spend the whole evening on the dancefloor! This smoking 17th entry (!) in the collection is every bit as grooving as the rest – heavy on the kind of 80s soul that still sounds pretty darn fresh today – cuts that never got the right sort of chance back in the day, and which are finally being rediscovered and given new life in the 21st Century! Rhythms are heavy on keyboards and beats – with a fair bit of bassy bits too – and titles include "Sweat" by Brick, "Lovequake" by Bobby King, "Just Begun To Love You" by Renee Aldrich, "Cry Like A Wolf" by RJ's Latest Arrival, "Give Me" by I Level, "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" by Intrique, "This Time" by Funk Deluxe, "Hot Girl" by Private Eye, and "Let's Change It Up" by Inner Life.

new Scott Walker — Scott 4 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fontana/4 Men With Beards, 1969. New Copy Gatefold .... $14.99 18.99 Out Of Stock
A brilliant testament to the songwriting genius of Scott Walker – and an incredibly haunting batch of original tunes, filled with images of lonely madness and unactualized emotion, all sung by one of the greatest voices of the century! The album's not a record to be taken lightly – as the Scott Walker approach to music is really over the top here – almost mini-movies in sound, pasted from scenes both epic and private – all held together by an impeccable set of arrangements! The style beautifully links Walker's older pop persona with the growing sophistication in European pop – especially from the French – and with a record like this, Scott easily matches the genius of Brel, Brassens, and Gainsbourg. All titles are originals – and titles include "Rhymes Of Goodbye", "The Old Man's Back Again", "Hero Of The War", "Boy Child", "Seventh Seal", and "On Your Own Again".

new Beach Boys — That's Why God Made The Radio ... CD
Capitol, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 16.98 Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great comeback for The Beach Boys – working here with Brian Wilson at the production helm, in a mode that really recalls the glory of the group's post-Pet Sounds years! We'll be honest that we were initially cringing at the title – and expected the worst – but there's a compelling, charming quality here that comes not just from the group's well-crafted harmonies, or the sensitive and careful production – but also from the fact that these guys have aged a heck of a lot, and seem to bring a sense of humanity to the music they wouldn't have had before! It's almost like that early 20s moment when the Boys were starting to grow up and bringing a new sense of pain to their previous teen lyrics – but recast here in a post-middle age mode that's even more human and honest – yet somehow still served up with all the sweetness that's always made the group great! It's that mix of sweet sounds and bittersweet undercurrents that really makes the album shine – a balance that even Brian Wilson never managed to capture this well in some of his own solo projects over the past few decades. So our hat's off to the group (showing the same bald spot that most of them have too) – thanks for a nice album that includes the cuts "Shelter", "The Private Life Of Bill & Sue", "Think About The Days", "Isn't It The Time", "Pacific Coast Highway", "Summer's Gone", and "From There To Back Again".

Various — Movements Vol 3 – Compiled By Tobias Kirmayer ... CD
Tramp (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99
The Movements series is back for a third volume and it's moving much deeper – the raw, smoldering funk of the previous sets is accompanied this time with groovy rare soul and jazz – and it's probably the best of the three Movements to date! Compiler Tobias Kirmayer has long showed a tremendous ear for funk & jazz rarities and this compilation is totally top notch – focus for the most part on 60s & 70s nuggets, many privately released and never really introduced to a large audience – featuring combos from around the US, a couple cuts born of the German jazz scene, a rare Italian soundtrack number and more! Titles include "Something Else" by The Iris Bell Trio featuring Butch Miles, "Backlash" by The Fats Gains Orchestra, "Let's Get Together" by The Echomen, "Angel Food" by The Port Angels (the lone recent recording and a tune that fits perfectly with the old school funky soul), "Grito Pidiendo" by Ernesto Cardenal, "Hello, Quincey" by Orchestra Luis Enriquez, "Song For My Father" by The Joe Viera Sextett, "The Serpent Speaks" by Solar Plexus and more. 11 tracks in all.

Various — Wayfaring Strangers – Lonesome Heroes ... CD
Numero, 1970s/Early 80s. Used .... $8.99
Troubadour folk from the 70s and into the early 80s – collected from rare privately issued records – the third set in the Wayfaring Strangers series from Numero! Lonesome Heroes is the male companion set to the equally excellent Ladies Of The Canyon compilation – and it features a haunting mix of spare, kind of eerily melodic vocal & guitar tunes, almost all of them by singer/songwriters who have remained largely unknown to this day. The melodies and chords are mostly on the tender, delicate side, and the voices range from gruff storytelling to sweeter singing. It really stands on its own really well in the Wayfaring Strangers series, too – the guitar playing is in service of the songs here, unlike the accomplished pickers & strummers on the Guitar Soli set, and the tunes aren't as airy as the Ladies From The Canyon material. Wonderful stuff, beatifully packages with great notes on the songs and artists, which should could go without saying, since this comes from the Numero Group! Titles include "Before" by Jim Schoenfeld, "It's So Profound" by Jim Ransom, "As I Walk" by Richard Smyrnios, "No Love Lost" by Tucker Zimmerman, "Hummingbird" by Kieran White, "The Tailor" by Jack Hardy, "Little Children" by George Cromarty, "Deep Night" by Tony Trosley, "Good Morning" by Tim Ward, "I Am The Moonlight" by John Villemonte, "O'Light" by Robb Kunkel and more. 17 tracks in all.

new Leroy Burgess — Throwback – Harlem 1979 to 1983 ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
No throwback here – as the music is a bold step forward in the career of Leroy Burgess – previously unissued tracks from his glory days in the New York club scene, and work that's as great as any of the material that was formally issued on the market! Burgess has a great ear for a compelling groove – and the tracks here were all recorded privately during the period when he was at the height of his boogie years – working under the names of Phreek, Aleem, Logg, and Convertion – in a real flurry of great work that seemed to hit the scene with a new single month after month! The tracks are slightly less polished, but not in a bad way – as they've got a style that's even more personal than some of Burgess' other music – keyboard parts that are very spontaneous, and vocals that have a nice edge. Tracks are mostly upbeat, and titles include "Hold Up", "Scandal", "In The Moment", "Keepin On", "Midnight In The Streets", "It's So Easy", "Fly Girl", "Moment Of My Life", "All Into U", "Under Da Radar", and "You Are My Number One".

new Randy Weston — African Cookbook ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1964. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer album of African-tinged jazz – recorded privately by Randy Weston in the mid 60s, and not issued formally until 1972 by Atlantic Records! The session shows Weston at the height of his modernist experiments – and at a time when his work was going largely undocumented, probably because of its progressive nature – but really flowing out with a rich Africanist inspiration, and served up with even sharper modern edges than before! His group here includes Big Black on congas, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Ray Copeland on trumpet – and Copeland also arranged all the tracks, transforming a few older numbers with the bolder spirit of the session. Titles include "Niger Mambo", "African Cookbook", "Portrait Of Vivian", "Willie's Tune" and Weston's classic "Congolese Children".
