A real turning point in the career of Gene Ammons – a record that almost returns Ammons to his earthier roots, and in the process helps build up a whole new sound in soul jazz for the 60s! The "Jug" nickname in the title is kind of a joking way to help Ammons stand alongside "Miles", "Trane", "Diz", and other one-name monikered stars in jazz – but even without that gimmick (which somehow lasted for years), the album's got a depth that more than gets Gene back on top, thanks to a gritty soulfulness and good sense of feeling in the grooves! Players here include Richard Wyands on piano on most numbers – plus a rare appearance by Clarence "Sleepy" Anderson on 2 numbers – one on organ, one on piano. Rhythm is by Doug Watkins on bass and JC Heard on drums – and Ray Barretto makes one of his great soul jazz appearances on drums – rolling the groove along with a nice bit of bounce throughout! Titles include "Tangerine", "Ol Man River", "Easy To Love", "Seed Shack", "Miss Lucy", and "Namely You".

A session of "collectors items" that Miles Davis recorded for Prestige in the 50s – both dates that were too short to be issued as albums by themselves, combined here into one full length record! The first batch of material is from 1953 – and features Davis working with Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker (playing here under his "Charlie Chan" session name) – all in a mode that steps off a bit from the boppishness of Davis' Blue Note recordings. Titles include 2 takes of "Serpent's Tooth", plus "Round Midnight" and "Compulsion". The second half of the record is from 3 year later, 1956 – and again features Rollins, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Tracks are a bit longer and more mature in the Davis idiom – and titles include "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Vierd Blues", and "No Line".

A seminal session from the team of Miles Davis & John Coltrane – not nearly as "cookin" (at least in a blowing session way) as you might guess from the title, but instead a beautiful example of the lyrically modern explorations the pair created together! Rhythm is by the trio of Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones – but the horn work of Davis and Coltrane are clearly the starring attraction on the set! Titles include "Tune Up", "Blues By Five", and "Airegin" – plus the pair's classic reading of "My Funny Valentine".

A strange mix of material – but some great work overall! Most of the record features Miles Davis recording with a quintet that includes Thelonious Monk on piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on longer versions of "The Man I Love" (in 2 takes), "Swing Spring", and "Bemsha Swing". These sides have a great bop/modern approach that's a nice extension of the styles that Jackson and Davis were playing on Blue Note in earlier years. Also added to the set is one number from 1956 – a version of "Round Midnight" recorded in early sessions with John Coltrane on tenor, and the Red Garland Trio on rhythm – different than the rest of the tracks, but still quite nice!

Searing live work from Eric Dolphy – part of a series of recordings that set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The record features Dolphy going even farther out than on his studio sides from the time – as the record features very long tracks performed by a crack group that includes Booker Little on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. Despite the length of the tracks, Dolphy isn't as far out as on later European live recordings – but the performance is a great example of his inventiveness within a mainstream structure, and the modernist tendencies of both Waldron and Little shine very brightly in the set. The concert was one of Little's last (and greatest) recordings – sometimes billed as a "memorial", even though he was still alive when it was done – and titles on this volume include "Aggression" and "Like Someone In Love".

Eric Dolphy's first meeting in the studio with trumpeter Booker Little – a brilliant batch of modernism that's easily one of the hippest records Little ever worked on! The Dolphy heard here is Eric at his most inventive – sharp-edged and angular one minute, then spiritually lyrical the next – playing flute, bass clarinet, and alto sax equally well on the record – and somehow managing to get Little to share his inspiration perfectly on every number. Other players include Jaki Byard on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – a rhythm team whose abilities are a big part of the success of the record – and titles include "Far Cry", "Mrs Parker Of KC", "Left Alone", "Ode To Charlie Parker", and "Miss Ann". CD features 1 bonus track.

Volume 2 of a 2 LP set that brings together nearly all of Wardell Gray's classic LA bop recordings for Prestige – most of which were issued originally only on 45s and 78s. The players include the cream of the LA scene of the time – including Dexter Gordon, Sonny Criss, and Hampton Hawes – and tracks include classic long takes of "Move" and "Scrapple From The Apple", his famous "chase" with Gordon – plus "April Skies", "Jackie", "Farmer's Market", and "Bright Boy".

The record is a brilliant batch of quartet tracks that reinvents bop through Sonny's complicated, yet seemingly automatic solos – an excellent showcase for his razor-sharp talents for improvisation and invention, played with effortless ease, yet still one of the great bar-setting performances of 50s jazz. The sessions provide a perfect format for such an effort – as the tracks are long and open-ended, and match Eddie with a great quintet that includes Shirley Scott on organ and Jerome Richardson on flute and tenor. Tracks include "Heat & Serve", "Simmerin", and "The Goose Hangs High".

A trio session – but a killer! Unlike some of Byard's earlier trio work from the 60s, this one's a pretty compelling set – with some very trippy influences, and a strange mix of 60s grooving, Eastern rhythms, and trad jazz themes. Jaki plays piano (and guitar on one track!) – and his trio features Ornette's bassist David Izenzon on bass, plus Elvin Jones on drums and tympani! Titles include "Trendsition Zildijian", "Sunshine", "Cast Away", and "Chandra".

A treasure trove of lost material from Jaki Byard – recorded during a time when he was at the height of his powers! The 7 tunes on this set were originally cut for the 2 volume series of live recordings Byard did for Prestige in the mid 60s – and of those 7, only 1 was ever issued, and even then, never on CD. The work is quite striking – with Byard on piano, leading a quartet that features a very young Joe Farrell on tenor, soprano, and flute, with crack rhythm by the team of George Tucker on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. All the tracks were recorded during one set at Lennie's in Massachusetts in 1965, and overall, the performances have a longer, more unbridled feel than most of Byard's studio work of the time. The range of his work on piano is incredible – modern one moment, soulful another, and trad the next – and Farrell's playing is surprisingly strong for such an early point, especially on the longer tunes on the set, which really let him open up in exploratory solos. Titles include "Dolphy #1", "King David", "Twelve (alt)", "St Mark's Place Among The Sewers", and "Jaki Byard's Ballad Medley".

A bold early statement from a young John Coltrane – and an album that really has him expanding his talents as a tenor soloist! Coltrane's working here in open-ended quartet format – with backing from the Red Garland trio that includes Paul Chambers and Art Taylor – on a set of longer tunes that really let the young Trane stretch out on his solos, unobstructed by any other horns in the lineup. There's a nice mix of hardbop ideals, gentle ballads, and personal soul to the set – and titles include Coltrane's classic reading of Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait", plus "I Want To Talk About You", "Russian Lullaby", and "Theme For Ernie".

One of the most far-reaching, exploratory records cut by Booker Ervin during the 60s – a set that really lives up to the "freedom" in its title! The album really takes off from some of Ervin's other work of the time – and stands along next to the equally-great Space Book as a departure from his roots as mostly a Texas-styled tenorman. There's still a bit of Ervin's deeper soul in the mix, but the sound has more of the sharp edges that Booker was working on with Charles Mingus at the time – long solos filled with plenty of feeling, and a sound that's simply breathtaking throughout! The group's a quartet – especially well-matched with Jaki Byard on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums – all perfect partners for the unique vibe going on for the session. All tracks are great, and titles include "A Lunar Tune", "A Day To Mourn", "Cry Me Not", "Grant's Stand", and "Al's In".

A CD of very long tracks from Booker Ervin – only 4 tunes in all, but each over 15 minutes long! First up is the album Setting The Pace – an album that's one of the most open-ended and jamming sets that Booker Ervin recorded for Prestige in the 60s! The album's a live date from Germany – featuring Dexter Gordon joining Ervin on the stage for some very long, extended solo work – the sort that Dex was starting to do heavily overseas at the time, and which is relatively new territory for Ervin – at least on record. Other players include Jaki Byard on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums – but the clear starts of the set are Booker and Dexter – blowing in a range of modern and soulful modes throughout their extended solos. Album features 2 side-long tracks – "Setting The Pace" and "Dexters Deck". Next up is The Trance – an amazing record from the legendary Booker Ervin – and a set that really does a great job of bridging his modernist tendencies and soul jazz roots! The title track – "The Trance" – is an amazing 20 minute number that takes up all of side one of the record – and features Ervin soloing in an incredibly imaginative way – not as boppish as on his set with Dexter Gordon, but more in the powerful-voiced style that he developed with Mingus. The rest of the group features Jaki Byard on piano (always a treat!), Reggie Workman on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums – and side two features a very moody take on "Speak Low". Note that the CD omits the track "Groovin At The Jamboree" from The Trance – due to space restrictions.

A great little return to form for Tal Farlow – his first recording in a decade, and a rare Prestige side that features a groovy quartet with John Scully on piano, Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. There's a different vibe here than Tal's work for Verve – a bit more open, but still with that great Farlow tone that was always one of the greatest jazz guitar sounds of the 50s. The tracks include "Straight No Chaser", "Darn That Dream", "Summertime", "Sometime Ago", "I'll Remember April", "My Romance", and "Crazy, She Calls Me". Farlow did not record again until 1976.

Gentle genius from Red Garland – working here in classic trio formation with Sam Jones and Art Taylor – on a mellow set of late nite numbers and subtle ballads, all carried off in the best tradition of the Moodsville label! Eddie Lockjaw Davis joins the group on 3 tracks on the set – blowing in a style that's spare, open-mouthed, and amazingly soulful – more so almost than even his best ballad blowing on his organ-based records for Prestige during the same time. Davis really sparkles tremendously on the tunes "Softly Baby", "When Your Lover Has Gone", and "We'll Be Together Again" – and other tracks include "Stella By Starlight", "Blue Room", and "Wonder Why".

Sublime work from Benny Golson – and one of his few hard soul jazz sides from the time! The group's a heavy one all around – a quintet that includes Curtis Fuller, Ray Bryant, Tommy Bryant, and Al Harewood – all of whom push Golson past that over-arranged style of other albums, into a groove that's a lot deeper, more relaxed, and open ended. Benny's tenor tone opens right up for the set – and the album features some of his most interesting blowing from the time. Titles include "Soul Me", "Jam For Bobbie", and "Staccato Swing". CD also features a bonus track – "A Bit Of Heaven".

A slightly different take on the Modern Jazz Quartet sound of the early years – as the album features Milt Jackson's vibes in the company of MJQ bandmates Percy Heath and Connie Kay, but also includes Horace Silver on piano – in the spot normally reserved for John Lewis! The presence of Silver on piano gives a bit of a harder edge to the set, one that almost recalls some of Jackson's work on Blue Note in the early 50s, yet which is rounded out here by a few lighter and more lyrical touches on rhythm. The set includes a great reading of "Moonray", the Jackson original "Stonewall", and the tracks "Wonder Why", "I Should Care", and "My Funny Valentine".

Seminal early work from Willis Jackson – two classics back to back on a single CD! Blue Gator is a massive early Prestige set from tenorist Willis – and just the kind of record that set him firmly in the soul jazz camp for the 60s! By the time of the set, Jackson had already won plenty of fame for his R&B-tinged work – but here, he stretches out a bit more, and really gets creative on his solos – working with a very hip group that includes Jack McDuff on organ and Wild Bill Jennings on guitar – both players making a similar shift in their music at the time. The tracks are lively, recorded with a bold, loud tone, and have lots of those great open-mouthed tones from Jackson – quite possibly a good reason for his "Gator" nickname! Tracks include "Blue Gator", "East Breeze", "The Gator Jumps", and "Try A Little Tenderness". Cookin Sherry is solid-sending soul jazz from the great Willis Jackson! The album features Gator blowing in a group that includes Jack McDuff and Wild Bill Jennings on all cuts – plus bass by either Milt Hinton or Wendell Marshall, drums by Bill Elliott or Al Johnson, and some tasty added conga by Buck Clarke on a few cuts! The album's got a tight, yet laidback feel to – perfect kickback jam session material, in that classic Prestige soul jazz mode. Titles include "Contrasts", "Cookin Sherry", "Mellow Blues", and "Sportin".

Two excellent sides of funky Hammond jazz – courtesy of Charles Kynard, one of the greatest organists west of the Mississippi! Soul Brotherhood is one of Kynard's rarest sessions – and one of his best, too! The group on the album has a very tight lead line with David Newman, Blue Mitchell, and Grant Green, and and the record's filled with good tracks like "Piece o' Pisces", "Soul Brotherhood", and "Blue Farouq" – but our fave is a groovy groovy cover of "Big City". Reelin With The Feelin is probably Kynard's most famous LP from the time – and one with a groove that's slightly different than others issued by Prestige at the time! Unlike the other Prestige sessions from the late 60s, most of which were done on the east coast, this one was recorded in LA, with backing by funky players like Wilton Felder, Carol Kaye, and Paul Humphrey. The sound is a bit more free than some of the heavier lead-foot funk albums on Prestige, and Kynard's bubbling organ style is a nice match for the open rhythms laid down by Kaye and Humphrey. Titles include "Slow Burn", "Boogalooin", "Reelin With The Feelin", and "Stomp". 11 tracks in all!

The title says it all – as Yusef Lateef works here in that wonderful mixture of hardbop, soul jazz, and Eastern stylings that he brought to all of his best early sessions as a leader! Lateef himself is playing tenor, flute, and oboe – which he uses to craft these eerie snakecharmer lines that work perfectly with the modal grooves of the tracks – very unusual rhythms for the time, and a real precursor to some of the world jazz experiments to come from overseas. The rest of the group features pianist Barry Harris, drummer Lex Humphries, and bassist Ernie Farrow, who also plays a strange instrument called a rabat – which further adds to the charm of the record. Titles include "Plum Blossom", "Purple Flower", "Three Faces Of Balal", and "Chinq Miau".

A real classic from Yusef Lateef – and like the rest of his best albums from the time, an incredible blend of hardbop, soul jazz, and some really wonderful exotic touches! Lateef plays a bit of oboe on the album – sounding really weird and snakey over laidback orientalist rhythms on the album's most out there tracks. On other tunes he picks up tenor, grooving more straight ahead, and also hits a bit of flute for the more gentle moments. The group's a quartet – with Barry Harris on piano, Herman Wright on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and titles include "P. Bouk", "Koko's Tune", "Water Pistol", and "Rasheed".

Hard hitting R&B organ tracks from the early years of Jack McDuff! The CD features 14 tracks – with the full LP of Brother Jack and Goodnight, It's Time To Go, and one extra track from Jack's Steppin Out LP. The tracks show Jack just getting past the stock jukebox sound of his "Honeydripper" hit, and pushing into a realm that's a lot more lively, jazzy, and filled with his own unique touches. Tracks include "Drowsy", "Sanctified Waltz", "Godiva Brown", "A Smooth One", and "McDuff Speaking".

Wonderful work from one of our favorite organ players ever – and a tasty set that features titles from a number of rare albums! The work on the set comes from the albums Walk On By, Hallelujah Time, Midnight Sun, Soul Circle, Steppin Out, Silk & Soul, and I Got A Woman – all of which were sort of a mish-mash of tracks that were recorded at different times during the mid 60s, with different groups all caught in the studio to cash in on Jack's rich talent at a time of his immense popularity. Don't let the different origins of the material scare you, though, because the work's all great – and the 13 track set is a perfect summation of McDuff's rich talent for hitting a groove that was at once soulful, skillful, and touched with a groovy sound that was unlike any other organ player! Titles include "Haitian Lady", "Chicken Feet", "Stop It", "More", "That's When We Thought Of Love", "Song Of The Soul", "The Live People", and "Aroudn The Corner".

Genius work from Moody – and a larger session than usual – one that shows his strong talents with an expanded lineup! Moody's working here with players that have a definite Dizzy Gillespie Big Band bent – including trumpeter Dave Burns, trombonist William Shepherd, baritonist Pee Wee Moore, and pianist Jimmy Boyd – but they're working with Moody in a groove that's got equal parts modern alongside the bop, in a way that makes for some complicated arrangements that bristle with electricity. There's almost a bit of Gigi Gryce or Benny Golson in the spirit of the set – and Moody's work on alto is an especially good example of this on the record. Eddie Jefferson makes a great vocal appearance on "Disappointed" – and other tracks include "Little Ricky", "Big Ben", "Show Eyes", "Hard To Get", and "And You Called My Name".

Wail Moody indeed! One side of this gem of an album features an extended hard blowing track – called "Wail Moody Wail" – one that features James blowing on both tenor and alto, in a group with Pee Wee Moore on baritone, Dave Burns on trumpet, Jimmy Boyd on piano, and William Shepherd on trombone. The groove is open – informed by bop, but with a lot of early soul jazz in the mix – and the album's more proof that Moody is one of the great under-recognized talents of the 20th century! Other titles include "The Golden Touch", "The Donkey Serenade", and "Moody's Blue Again".

Nice one – and a record that's heavier-duty than Shirley's other ones on Prestige. The album (which might have been recorded in earlier days), supports a great group on the b-side, which includes Wally Richardson, Ronell Bright, Peck Morrison, and Roy Haynes. The expanded lineup works nicely – and the tracks performed ("Work Song" and "Chapped Chops") are both nice and lively, with guitar providing a nice complement to Shirley's light style on the keys.

Classic 60s soul jazz from Eddie Lockjaw Davis – more than an album's worth of materal on a single CD! First up is part of the album Misty – great work from the famous team that featured Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor and Shirley Scott on organ – recorded here in the mellow, open-ended setting of Prestige Records' Moodsville label – a perfect setting for the late nite stylings of the pair! There's a slight more groove to this session than some of the other Moodsville date – thanks to the presence of Ray Barretto in the group on congas –a longside the bass of George Duvivier and drums of Arthur Edgehill. CD also adds in the track "From This Moment On". Goin To The Meetin is a great one – and one of the rarest Prestige dates from Eddie Lockjaw Davis! The album features a unique group that includes Horace Parlan on piano – in place of the organ that had graced many of Davis' earlier Prestige records – with added groovy energy from Buddy Catlett on bass, Art Taylor on drums, and Willie Bobo on congas – all players who seem to give Davis an even sharper edge than before – not entirely the modern tones of his pairings with Johnny Griffin, but a bit less sleepy than in the company of a Hammond. The congas really kick things up nicely – and there's an undercurrent of fire that almost recalls some of the best Blue Note dates of this nature from the time. Titles include "Little Cougar", "Yes Yes", "Pass The Hat", "Goin To Meetin", and "Oh Babee".

A huge moment in jazz – not just for trumpeter Miles Davis, but also for saxophonist John Coltrane – who was virtually introduced to the world at large with this record! As you might guess from the title, the record's the first to feature Coltrane playing along with Davis – a sublime combination that resulted in some key sides that forever helped shape the sound of jazz. Rhythm is by the famous trio of Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones – and apart from the top-shelf solo work, the interplay between the horns is also fantastic. Titles include "Just Squeeze Me", "There Is No Greater Love", "How Am I To Know", "S'Posin", "The Theme", and "Stablemates".

The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments on the west coast – sharp-edged and freely exploratory, in a way that pushes the playful lyricism of the Chico Hamilton years aside, and reaches out into the new territory hinted at by the title! The group is a quintet that features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and the overall sound is a beautiful mix of modernist hard bop and some of Dolphy's later freer styles. Dolphy plays his usual mix of alto, flute, and bass clarinet – and the tracks include "245", "Miss Toni", "Les", and "GW".

2 late 60s sides by Groove Holmes – back to back on one CD! The Groover is a nice one from the days when Groove was playing with guitarist George Freeman! The core of the tracks on here feature a trio of Holmes, Freeman, and drummer Billy Jackson – and the trio knows how to cook nice and nicely, especially on the original cut "The Walrus", a groovy number written by Freeman, with his usual off-kilter approach. Other cuts include "My Scenery", "Blue Moon", and "I'll Remember April". That Healin Feelin is a tight, no-nonsense set of hard grooves featuring a quartet that includes Rusty Bryant, Billy Butler, and Herbie Lovelle. There's a strong bottom sound to the session – picking up from the Misty days, when Groove learned that he could take just about any track, and make it groove like a mofo! Because of this, the album's selections – "That Healin Feelin", "Irene Court", "Castle Rock", and "On a Clear Day" – all sound night and tight, as Groove would have delivered the tunes playing before one of his many well-attended audiences at the time!

Kenny may be quiet, but he's never muted – and the record is far from the sleepy session you might guess from the title! The album's a real standout in the Dorham catalog – a set that let's Kenny's trumpet sparkle beautifully in a quartet that includes piano from Tommy Flanagan, bass from Paul Chambers, and drums from Art Taylor – all bringing their own spirit to the record, but really hanging back in the space to let Dorham's sound dominate the record. Kenny's notes are beautifully shaped throughout – in a mode that has echoes of Clifford Brown's sweetness, but which also speaks with a raspier, earthier tone overall! Titles include 2 key Dorham classics – "Lotus Blossom" and "Blue Spring" – plus "Mack The Knife", "My Ideal", "Blue Friday", and "Old Folks".

A full length set that compiles earlier sessions cut under either the name of Thelonious Monk or Sonny Rollins – most of them together in the same group! At the time of recording, Monk was an established figure on the bop scene, but Rollins was still a fresh voiced up-and-comer – yet they work together beautifully here on an early take of "Friday The Thirteenth" which really benefits from Rollins' voicing on tenor, next to Monk's angular arrangement. The pair also perform "The Way You Look Tonight" and "I Want To Be Happy" with a quartet – twisting the familiar tunes into strongly Monkish territory – and the album's last 2 tracks, "Nutty" and "Work" are performed by Monk with a trio that includes Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums.

Quite an unusual Lou Donaldson album for Blue Note – much more open-ended than his other sets, with a really hard-jamming sort of sound! Unlike some of Donaldson's tighter dates of the time, which feature more bop-based, song-based shorter tunes – this one's more of a long-form blowing session, much more of the date you'd expect to hear from Prestige in the late 50s – and a bit like some of the work that Lou did on some of Jimmy Smith's all-star blowing dates from the same time. The group's a great one – a sextet with Donaldson on alto, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Sonny Clark on piano, Jamil Nasser on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – the last of whom is very much at home in the setting, and does a great job of directing the energy of the group. The album's only got four long tracks – and titles include "Sputnik", "Dewey Square", "Groovin High", and "Strollin In".

Grant's First Stand – and a mighty one at that! The set was recorded when Green was a guitarist fresh on the scene – showing up in New York from St Louis, where he'd been discovered by Lou Donaldson and brought to Blue Note with great acclaim! For this first date, Green's heard in really stripped-down company – just Hammond from Baby Face Willette and drums from Ben Dixon – a spare trio setting that makes for a madly cooking little record, and one without some of the smoother edges of Greens' later years! The set's as raw and soulful as Willette's own Blue Note classics – and is very much in the side of the spectrum that Donaldson was bringing to the label at a time – a much-needed dose of new energy from the Prestige Records side of the tracks. Every track's a winner – and titles include "Blues For Willarene", "Baby's Minor Lope", "Miss Ann's Tempo", and "A Wee Bit O Green".

A cool collection of rare recordings from trumpeter Allen Houser – mostly recorded around the DC scene of the 70s, all with hip small group players and a pretty soulful feel overall! Houser's trumpet is set up in quartet, quintet, and sextet formations – often with a groove that draws from the hardbop years of Blue Note and Prestige, even more so than on some of Houser's commercially released work from the time. Players include Buck Hill on tenor, Reuben Brown on electric piano, Bob Butta on piano, Bob Balthis on valve trombone, and Joe Clark on tenor sax. A few tracks are recorded under the leadership of Julio Miranda or Joe Clark – and titles include "Peace", "Our Day Will Come", "Doxy", "Blues For Philly Joe", "Song For My Father", and "Four".

A fantastic full length set from Quasimode – the Japanese club jazz combo who first blew our minds with their single for Raw Fusion! Hearing them here in a full LP, the sound is even better than before – a range of jazzy changes and tight instrumental work that reminds us of Blue Note or Prestige in their mid 60s prime – with a wonderful blend of soul jazz and hardbop styles running through the mix, plus a fair bit of rolling modal rhythms aimed at the sound of the contemporary scene! Tunes are mostly upbeat throughout – and build from percussion, piano, bass, and drums – topped off by additional tenor, trumpet, soprano, and vibes on some numbers – and also featuring a bit of Fender Rhodes as well. The album features the group's great version of Tubby Hayes' "Down In The Village", plus the original tracks "Oneself Likeness", "Feelin Green", "Skelton Coast", "Ipe Amarelo", "Lucky Luciano", "Giant Black Shadow", and "1000 Days For Spirit".

The "flipside" of Ike Quebec's legendary run of albums for Blue Note – a huge set of material recorded only as 45 singles during his same stretch at the label! Although Quebec's work as a soulful tenorist has been well documented and reissued over the years on albums like Blue & Sentimental and Heavy Soul, Ike also cut a fair number of singles aimed at the jukebox and radio crowds of the time – tunes that were more in the gutsy tenor and organ mode recorded by labels like Prestige or Chess, and which never made it onto any of the full-length sets for Blue Note! Titles include "Buzzard Lope", "Zonky", "Blue Monday", "Later For The Rock", "Dear John", "Blue Friday", "Ill Wind", "Mardis Gras", and "Everything Happens To Me".

Hard wailing! Poppa Lou's caught right at the height of his early Blue Note powers here – recorded in 2 different groups on this set of unreleased sessions from the early 60s! Both sets have Lou in a guitar/organ soul jazz setting – with backing by Grant Green on guitar, and either Jack McDuff or John Patton on organ. The McDuff set features the great Joe Dukes on drums, and the session sparkles like one of McDuff's best Prestige albums from the time. The other session has the classic Patton/Green lineup augmented by trumpeter Irwin Stokes, a lesser-known talent who really opens up the sound nicely. There's a total of 9 tracks in all – a number of them ballads, but done with a lively soulful tone that keeps the whole thing nice and fresh – even after sitting in the vaults for nearly 40 years! Titles include "Star Dust", "Hippty Hop", "Please", "Man With A Horn", and "Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White".

By this point in his career, Sonny hardly needed a tune up in his style – but the album's a great one from his post-Prestige years, and a real back-to-basics effort that recalls the genius of his work on Roost! The format is straight and simple – Stitt's tenor and alto fronting a quartet that includes Barry Harris, Sam Jones, and Alan Dawson – all playing in a way that puts Sonny in command on all tracks, blowing with an amazing tone that makes us want to throw away all his funk, organ, and electric outings, and just concentrate on these straight acoustic sides. Stitt has a way of blowing the reed like he's got his whole mouth moving into the sax – an earthy, human, and personal feel that first came out strongly in his work during the late 50s, but which has grown even more by this point – even if you couldn't hear the development on other sets. And given our love of funk and electric sides, we're honestly surprised we find ourselves championing a record like this from the early 70s – but it's a great one, and not to be missed if you remotely dig Stitt! Titles include "Tune Up", "Idaho", "Just Friends", "Groovin High", and "Blues For Prez & Bird".

A triple-header of hardbop albums – a great package that features 3 Savoy Records classics from 1955, with bonus tracks and great notes too! First up is Bohemia After Dark – an excellent hardbop session from the glory days of the Savoy label – easily one of the label's key 50s classics! Drummer Kenny Clarke's at the front of the group – but all players are great, and the set features work by Cannonball Adderley on alto, Jerome Richardson on tenor, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Nat Adderley on cornet, Hank Jones or Horace Silver on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass. The Adderley brothers sound especially great – and the young Cannonball has a quality here that's more soulful and sharp-edged than his work on Mercury – much more in a Prestige blowing session style! Titles include "Late Entry", "Chasm", "Bohemia After Dark", and "Hear Me Talkin To Ya". Next is more material from the same stretch, originally issued under the title Spontaneous Combustion under Cannonball's name. Adderley and his alto sax are joined by Donald Byrd on trumpet, Nat Adderley on cornet, Jerome Richardson on tenor sax and flute, Horace Silver on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. The tracks include "Spontaneous Combustion", "Caribbean Cutie", "A Little Taste", "We'll Be Together Again", "Still Talkin To Ya", and "Flamingo". Last up is the album That's Nat – a real smoker from a young Nat Adderley – a session that has the leader on cornet, working in a tight hardbop combo with Jerome Richardson on tenor and flute, Hank Jones on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! The tracks are all nicely sharp-edge – that soulful Savoy sound of the mid 50s – and Richardson is especially nice, really getting a great sound from both his tenor and flute. Tracks are somewhat long, with good room for solos – and titles include "Porky", "I Married An Angel", "Kuzzin's Buzzin's", and "You Better Go Now".

Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt go head to head in this classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that includes John Houston on piano, Charles Williams on bass, and George Brown on drums – and it's way heavier than the usual Verve "meeting of the masters" session, and feels more like a record that should have been issued on Prestige or Argo. Both players are impeccable, and the solos stretch out for a long long very live time. Titles include "Blues Up & Down", "The One Before This", and "Counter Clockwise" – but these guys even groove amazingly on standards like "Autumn Leaves" and "No Greater Love".

A great collection of some of the less-collected work by Clifford Brown – 1953 recordings done in Europe for the Metronome and Vogue labels, plus a date for Prestige with Tadd Dameron's band! Although Brown's work for Blue Note and Pacific Jazz has been well documented and presented over the years, this set is the first to do such a good job with some of these other sides – bringing to light some impeccable work from a key point in Brownie's career! Sides feature Brown working with the Swedish All-Stars led by Quincy Jones, Gigi Gryce & Orchestra, the Gigi Gryce-Clifford Brown octet, and a Parisian quartet with Henri Renaud, Pierre Michelot, and Benny Bennett. The set features 31 tracks in all – and titles include "Scuse These Blues", "Brown Skins", "Goofin With Me", "Choose Now", "Theme Of No Repeat", "Hello", "All Weird", "Strictly Romantic", "Baby", "No Start No End", "I Can't Dream Can't I", and "Conception".

A key later album from alto saxophonist Benny Carter – one that has him at the helm of a largeish group, but playing with a nicely focused sort of groove! In addition to Benny's alto, the record also features tenor sax from Charlie Rouse and Coleman Hawkins, plus one more alto from Phil Woods – supported by rhythm from John Collins on guitar, Dick Katz on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Jo Jones on drums. The tunes are traditional, but have some sharper-edged modern ideas on some of the solos – and there's a nicely echoey feel to the production, which further adds to the quality of the record. The album's a bit like a Swingville session for Prestige, but has a bit more going on – and titles include "Doozy", "Blue Star", "Midnight Sun Will Never Set", and "Crazy Rhythm".

The title may be a simple one, but the record really marks a key point in John Coltrane's development – an embrace of the newer freedoms allowed to him at Atlantic Records, but in a way that's a bit more subtle than some of his other work for the label! At one level, the record moves at the same groove as Trane's later Prestige years – with rhythm mostly from Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – carving out some sharp lines for Coltrane to cascade over on tenor sax. Yet there's also a new sense of darkness here too – one that moves into edgier territory, and which isn't nearly as settled in as before. These qualities sneak out of both original numbers like "Harmonique", "Fifth House", and "Like Sonny" – as well as standards like "My Shining Hour" and "Little Old Lady". And they really come to the forefront on the classic "Village Blues" – the one track that features the new Coltrane group of McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis, and Elvin Jones! CD features 4 more bonus alternate takes too!

Coltrane plays the blues, but in a way like nobody else – stepping off of the deeply soulful sound of his late Prestige years, and moving into even more open and exploratory space for Atlantic! The setting is bare bones and simple – and many of these numbers begin with the sort of simple vamp that might characterize a blowing session for other labels, but which still has a strong degree of focus for this date. Rhythm is from McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and there's some great sharp edges from Coltrane here, especially on the numbers that feature tenor sax in the lead. Side one of the album features more standard bluesy vamps, but side two really opens up into some tremendous numbers that show the first great hint of modal energy – rollingly enchanting titles that still leave us breathless after all these years! Tracks include "Blues To Elvin", "Blues To Bechet", "Mr Syms", "Mr Day", and "Mr Knight". Also features the bonus tracks "Untitled Original", and alternative takes of "Blues To Elvin" and "Blues To You".

The complete recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Both albums were a bit unusual for the label – in that The Winner's Circle was sort of a blowing/jam session type record, cut with some of the big poll winners of the year, but with shorter tracks than the usual Prestige-styled set of that nature. The lineup includes Donald Byrd, Al Cohn, Eddie Costa, Oscar Pettiford, and Philly Joe Jones – and Coltrane's a bit buried in the group, but gets out some nice licks from time to time. The second set of tracks was recorded for a unique big band session led by Art Blakey – featuring a core group with Coltrane, Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop Jr, and Wendell Marshall on some tracks – plus a larger lineup on a number of others. The CD brings together a whopping 27 tracks from these sessions, including some great alternate takes – and titles include "Midriff", "Tippin", "The Outer World", "The Kiss Of No Return", "Pristine Take", and "Oasis" – a previously unreleased track!

Thelonious Monk wrote the title tune, but Miles Davis makes it almost his own here – blowing with a subtly moody magic that makes the album one of his true treasures from the early Columbia years! John Coltrane's along on tenor sax – helping Davis expand the sound the pair first forged on Prestige – and also present is the rhythm trio of Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones – impeccably recorded here with a wonderful sense of space. Titles include Miles seminal take on "Round Midnight", plus "Tadd's Delight", "Dear Old Stockholm", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "A Leu Cha". The first disc also features 4 bonus tracks too – "Sweet Sue", "Little Melonae", "Budo", and "Two Bass Hit". The second disc are live recordings from '55 and '56.

One of the greatest albums we've heard from Ernest Dawkins in years – and one of the straightest, too! The set's got a hardbop fury we've not always heard from Dawkins – a tight, soulful energy that's spun out beautifully by the local group in the set – a lineup that includes Ernest on alto and tenor, Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Willerm Delisfort on piano, Junius Paul on bass, and Isaiah Spender on drums. Other tracks add in bits of percussion, and Hammond on one tune – and while the music still has all the sharp edges you'd know from Dawkins' time in the AACM, the overall execution feels more like a killer Blue Note or Prestige date from the 60s – particularly in the interplay between trumpet and sax. Titles include "Afro Straight", "United", "Central Park West", "Footprints", "Old Man Blues", and "Juju".

Some of the most soulful jazz recorded in Europe during the 1960s – and the complete Philips recordings of German saxophonist Klaus Doldinger! Doldinger's probably best remembered for the more dynamic fusion he cut with the Passport group in the 70s, but back in his early years he was full on soul jazz player, steeped in the tradition of Gene Ammons, Lou Donaldson, Sonny Stitt, and others before him – all players that we'd easily rank Doldinger with during these years, given the ultra-high level of his work for Philips! But given his German orientation, Doldinger also picked up on some of the freer influences that were running around the European scene of the 60s – and the tracks here don't just sparkle with American soul jazz sounds, but also show a bit of Brazilian and more progressive jazz influences as well. And alongside Doldinger's tremendous tenor and soprano sax, the recordings here are equally noteworthy for the organ lines of Ingrfried Hoffmann – an ultra-cool player on the Hammond, with the mixture of rhythmic energy and playfulness you might find in the work of Jack McDuff for Prestige at the same time! Doldinger and Hoffmann cook tremendously throughout – so much so, you can easily forget their country of origin, and just put these sides on equally next to your favorites from Prestige or Cadet. 4CD package features material from 4 full albums, plus rare singles – and also includes a full CD of other rare Doldinger recordings from the same time! Amazing work from bop trumpeter Joe Gordon! Gordon was a lost talent who only cut a handful of records before his untimely death in 1963 – but he was a heck of a trumpeter, with a rich talent that we'd rank up there with Lee Morgan and Kenny Dorham. Joe plays here in a group that includes Art Blakey on drums and Charlie Rouse on tenor – and the overall sound is right up there with the best raw bop on Blue Note or Prestige during the same time. Titles include "Toll Bridge", "Lady Bob", "Flash Gordon", "Xochimilco", and "Bus Bier".

The most recent CD by the Greyboy All Stars, and a nice tight batch of grooves with a loud jazz funk sound in the tradition of the JBs, or some of the classic recordings from the late 60's on Prestige. Karl Denson and Robert Walter are in the group, and the ensemble has a large loud horn section. Tracks include "Sportscaster", "Toys R Us", "Turnip's Big Move", and "Planet Of The Superkids".

An excellent set of hardbop tracks – originally recorded under the leadership of trombonist Willie Wilson – but also issued under the names of Duke Pearson and Freddie Hubbard over the years! The set was cut in 1961 for the Jazztime label – and really crackles with electricity, and has a straight hardbop sound and a smoking New York groove – every bit as great as the best Blue Note work of the time, but with a raw edge that drives it even further. The group is top-notch, too – and features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Duke Pearson on piano, Thomas Howard on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums – plus the obscure Willie Wilson on trombone, a great player who was a friend of Pearson, and whose only recorded work is on this album. Tracks have a lively well-crafted sound, and titles include "Lex", "Blues For Alvina", "Apothegm", and "Minor Mishap". CD features 5 bonus alternate takes too! Note that this material was also issued by Prestige – under the title Dedication, with Pearson's name as the leader.

Two generations of Hammond heroes – teaming up here in an old school-styled set! We'll admit that we're a bit more partial to Jack's organ than Joey's, but DeFrancesco's still pretty great – and the pair play together as if on some old twin-Hammond date from the 60s on Prestige (although thinking back, the label really didn't ever cut sessions like that!) Players include Paul Bollenback and John Hart on guitars, Jerry Weldon on tenor, and Andrew Beals on alto – and titles include "Pork Chops & Pasta", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Black Jack", "Funk Pie", "Rock Candy", "Yesterdays", and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World".

A true jazz treasure from the 60s – as if you couldn't guess that already from the cover! The album's a really rare one from trumpeter and reedman Idrees Sulieman – a player who shone strongly on Prestige Records in the late 50s – then made the trip overseas, where he became a key member of the Clarke Boland Big Band! The set sparkles with some of the best energy of some of Idrees' contemporaries in that ensemble, especially some of the smaller combo offshoots of the CBBB – and, no surprise, it features some great work from saxophonist Sahib Shihab – another ex-pat who followed similar lines as Sulieman! Even more unusual, though, are the album's two vocal tracks from Jamila Sulieman – a great singer we'd never heard from before – and who brings in these deep blue tones on her pair of performances – almost in the way female vocals might be used on a Charles Mingus album from the time. Other numbers are soaringly instrumental – and half the album features a large group with Shihab on baritone sax, Bernt Rosengren on tenor, and alto sax from Sulieman – who then switches to trumpet for the album's remaining small group tracks. Titles include "Blues For Emanon", "The Camel", "Dawud's Bossa Nova", "I'll Remember April", "Sad & Strange", and "Long For The Blues".

Robert Walter's out of his usual jamband context here – and is working with a group of soul jazz masters, older players who helped define the jazz funk groove of the 70s, clearly a strong influence on Walter's keyboard style. The group features tenor by Red Holloway, drums by Harvey Mason, guitar by Phil Upchurch, and bass by Chuck Rainey – and the album's got a freewheeling soul jazz style that recalls some of the Prestige jazz funk of the 1972/73 era. Titles include "There Goes The Neighborhood", "Bread & Water", "Swap Meet", "Bakery Blues", and "4:00 Wash Up".

A much groovier set than usual from vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon – thanks to some great backing from the combo of organist Jack McDuff, which also includes guitar from a young Melvin Sparks! The sound here is definitely in keeping with the "blues" in the title – but McDuff's instrumentation brings in a fair bit of jazz as well – and really opens up the tunes with some of the playful rhythms he was laying down on his own records for Prestige in the 60s. And as usual, Witherspoon proves that he's every bit as much a jazz singer as a blues vocalist – by changing things up nicely on most of the tunes, and bringing in inflections that go way past a typical bluesy singing mode. The whole thing's nice and lively, with a really unique feel that's all its own – and titles include "Sweet Slumber", "My Money's Long This Morning Baby", "Part Time Woman", "Late One Evening", "SK Blues", and "Past Forty Blues".

An album and a half from Charlie Rouse – plus some great work by Seldon Powell too! First up is Rouse's Yeah album for Epic from 1961 – a fantastic (and rare) hardbop session from the early 60s! The album's quite different than some of the work Charlie Rouse cut with Monk's classic quartet at the time – more in a hardbop mode that takes us back to his late 50s sides for Prestige – but done with a new sense sharpness, and a bit more of a soul jazz influence overall! The group is great too – a quartet that includes Dave Bailey on drums, Billy Gardner on piano, and Peck Morrison on bass. The latter two were playing a lot with Lou Donaldson in the early 60s, and they bring a similar rhythmic flavor to this set as well – and although we've always loved Rouse's modernist tones with Monk, this session shows him as a true emotional genius, capable of laying down a tight solo that's right in the pocket! Titles include "Billy's Blues", "Lil Rousin", "Stella By Starlight", and "Rouse's Point". We Paid Our Dues is a really great little album – featuring some of the best small combo work by the both Charlie Rouse and Seldon Powell! The album is split into two parts – one part featuring work by Rouse with a trio that features Gildo Mahones on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. With Mahones leading the rhythm, the session's a lot more soulful than some of Rouse's other work – swinging with a lean mean sound that really returns his tenor style to some of its 50s power. The other group on the set features rare small combo work by Seldon Powell – an excellent tenor player who almost never got to work in small group settings. The rest of Powell's group includes Peck Morrison on bass, Denzil Best on drums, and Lloyd Mayers on piano. Both players are well suited to appear on the same record, and the split in personnel from track to track is less bracing than you might think. Titles include "Two For One", "Quarter Moon", "I Should Care", "Bowl Of Soul", and "For Lester".

New York is what is funky! This is a killer new release by a small organ jazz combo from the Big Apple – and they are definitely worthy members of the city's great end-of-the century funk scene that includes Medeski Martin & Wood, Sugarman Three, and The Other Side! The band have certainly spent plenty of time getting their chops up – and they have a very tight organ/guitar sound with a totally live feel to it. The overall groove is right up there with the best classic combos on Prestige – with stone cold funky drumming underneath sweetly strident lines on the Hammond, and some very heavy guitar rhythm parts. In a way, the record really evokes the heavy funk sound of Lonnie Smith's fantastic Blue Note sides from the Late 60s – with a very heavy drum sound nicely kicking it live! The CD's their first – and believe us, it will more than break them out of the box. Tracks include "Arruga De Agua", "Doin Something", "Rudy's Way", "Azucar", and "Steppin". Great stuff – and the kind of small-group recording that makes it worth shopping at Dusty Groove!

A key later album from alto saxophonist Benny Carter – one that has him at the helm of a largeish group, but playing with a nicely focused sort of groove! In addition to Benny's alto, the record also features tenor sax from Charlie Rouse and Coleman Hawkins, plus one more alto from Phil Woods – supported by rhythm from John Collins on guitar, Dick Katz on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Jo Jones on drums. The tunes are traditional, but have some sharper-edged modern ideas on some of the solos – and there's a nicely echoey feel to the production, which further adds to the quality of the record. The album's a bit like a Swingville session for Prestige, but has a bit more going on – and titles include "Doozy", "Blue Star", "Midnight Sun Will Never Set", and "Crazy Rhythm".

A sweet electric set from Sonny Rollins – and maybe the closest he ever came to cutting a funk record! The set's got that mellow electric funk approach that Prestige was using often in the mid 70s – Sonny's tenor lines getting some great Bay Area studio support from George Duke on keyboards, Bennie Maupin on reeds, Raul De Souza on trombone, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, and even Mtume on congas – players who work together to create a tight ensemble sound that moves the album nicely along! Titles include the great cut "Newkleus", a space funk jammer that has a nice Headhunters-ish kind of sound – and other tracks include "Gwaligo", "Azalea", and "Cosmet".
