MED/Blu/Madlib feat Mayer Hawthorne —
Buzz EP ... 12-inch Bang Ya Head Entertainment, 2013. New Copy (pic cover)....
All star team 12-inch with Med & Blu on the mic and Madlib in the production booth – plus superstar guest appearances by Mayer Hawthorne and Dam-Funk! Buzz is the intoxicating lead off track of three great ones – with a gritty beat and soul string sample in the backdrop, busy rhymes and Mayer's classic Detroit soul inspired vocals on the hook. Includes a main mix, radio version, instrumental and bonus beat. The flip "Peroxide" co-stars Dam-Funk and has a heady funk vibe in place of the soul-styled A-Side. It's another major win - with a main mix, clean radio version, instrumental and acapella. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Nice packaging, too – wrapped like a premium bottle of booze!)
A promising couple of tunes from the Youngblood Brass Band – grooving away here in much more of a moody Roy Hargrove mode than you'd expect from the group's moniker! "Ya'll Stay Up" features Talib Kweli kicking some melancholy street rhymes over the Brass's moody backdrop for a strong organic hip hop vibe – plus you get a remix and an instrumental version in which the group really shows its chops. The flip "Avalanche" has even more of a hip hop vibe, with punchy live horn riffs and frenetic rhymes. The closer "Camoflage" is a great funky instrumental that bodes well for the group's full length – a bass heavy bumper with incredibly tight riffing from the horns and electric bass – for sort of an Antibalas feel, but without the afrocentric percussion and much more focus on the bursting brass. Great new funk from Ozone – a mostly hip hop label that could contend with Stones Throw with a few more funky finds like this unit! 12-inch, Vinyl record
