Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De CotonouCotonou Club ... CD
Strut (UK), 2011. New Copy .... $11.99 14.98
The first record in years from these Afro Funk giants – but don't hold it against them, as the whole thing's pretty darn wonderful! There's a rich, vibrant sound here that really lives up to the group's legacy from years back – and production is right on the money to keep things right – recorded in Paris with a relatively stripped-down quality – just right for bringing all the tight rhythms of the set right to the foreground, without any overdone mass market cliches to hold things back! Even the appearances of a few famous guest stars can't get in the way of the energy of the Orchestre – and this new album should be more than proof that the originators are still alive and well. Titles include "Pardon", "Von Vo Nono", "Oce", "Koumi Dede", "Tegbe", "Lion Is Burning", "Ne Te Fache Pas", and "Gbeti Madjro".

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De CotonouVodoun Effect – Funk & Sato From Benin's Obscure Labels 1972 to 1975 ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $22.99 23.99
One of the most incredible African collections we've ever heard – almost more amazing than the African Scream Contest set from the same label! The package focuses on work by Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou – a group who really live up to their name, by bringing in a host of complicated rhythms to their music – including the "sato" groove, which is kind of a modern funky take on older voodoo modes! Production is often echoey – in ways that dub out the bass and drums nicely – and make the guitar parts sound nice and sinister – the vocals too, for that matter, even though we can't ever understand the lyrics. The music was originally recorded for a variety of different labels, but is brought together here beautifully – complete with a 44 page, full color booklet that not only tells the tale of the group, but also that of all the labels – then follows the whole thing up with a discography as well – a real labor of love that's as much of a visual treat as it is a sonic delight. Titles include "Se We Non Nan", "Ako Ba Ho", "Mi Ni Non Kpo", "Assibavi", "Mi Homlan Dadale", "Iya Me Dji Ki Bi Ni", "Mawa Mon Nou Mio", and "Koutoulie".
Also available: Vodoun Effect – Funk & Sato From Benin's Obscure Labels 1973 to 1975 ... LP $26.99

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De CotonouSkeletal Essences Of Afro Funk – 1969 to 1980 ... LP
New Copy .... Around May 1, 2013 (delayed)
The title gets it perfectly right on this sweet little set – as the grooves are raw and stripped down – often just to the core elements of Afro Funk! The music may be the most hard-hitting we've ever heard from this legendary combo – and it's served up beautifully in this well-selected compilation, right down to the detailed notes on the group and their long journey in sound! There's a core groove here that goes way beyond the boundaries of nation or culture – and which is plenty appealing to ears that have only ever been trained on American funk – and even more so on those who dig the great African sounds of the 70s. Plenty of heavy drums and ultra-cool guitar – and titles include "Adjro Mi", "A O O Ida", "Pourquoi Pas", "Ecoute Ma Melodie", "Min We Tun So", "Ai Gabani", and "Aku We Non Houme".

new Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De CotonouEchos Hypnotiques ... LP
Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $24.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second volume of rare Afrofunk from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou from Analog Africa – a killer set of material recorded at EMI Studios in Lagos, Nigeria for the Albarika Store label – impeccable sounding and feverishly played by the group! This one's fairly jaw dropping, catching us off guard, even, and we were floored by first volume, too. The group mixes Benin style Afrobeat and rhythms, killer percussion, and really great vocals with funk, soul, and strains of psychedelia – unpredictable predictable stylistic shifts from one number to the next, and some of the drum and bass interplay is just dynamite. Comes in a beautiful package with a thick booklet of notes & photos. Titles include "Se Ba Ho", "Mi Ve Wa Se"", "Ahouli Vou Yelli", "Malin Kpon O", "Mede Ma Gnin Messe", "Zizi", "Houe Djeun Nada", "Minkou E So Non Moin".
