✨✧ Jack Marshall & Shelly ManneSounds! ... LP
Capitol, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A sweet little set from mid 60s Capitol Records – a wonderful blend of jazz and percussion, handled by two of the most inventive musicians on the LA scene! Jack Marshall's probably best known for his excellent arrangements for the label on sets with singers – but here, he's playing guitar alongside the percussion of Shelly Manne – who handles a whole host of unusual instruments, always with the fluid swing he brought to his jazz recordings of the 50s! There's definitely a lot more jazz going on here than the heavier percussion you'd hear on a bachelor pad record of this nature – and the open strings on Marshall's guitar make for plenty of nice bossa inflections, too. Titles include "Theme From Lawrence Of Arabia", "Yesterdays", "The Girls of Sao Paulo", "The Rain in Spain", and "Choros". LP, Vinyl record album

Morton GouldMore Jungle Drums ... LP
RCA, 1964. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Better than it sounds – as this one, like the initial Jungle Drums album, is low on the drums, and much more in the mode of Gould's usual light classic work. In fact, we're kind of hard pressed to hear any percussion at all – as the main groove is orchestral performances of Latin standards, like "Brazil", "Siboney", "The Peanut Vendor", "Ay Ay Ay", and other tunes of that nature. LP, Vinyl record album
(Shaded dog stereo Dynagroove pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ Holy Modal RoundersIndian War Whoop ... LP
ESP, 1967. Very Good+ ... $38.99
Some of the most tripped-out music ever from The Holy Modal Rounders – and that's saying a lot, given the nature of the group! This unique early album on ESP features two side-long tracks – both of which are mini-suites of sort, and filled with odd sounds, weird themes, and a strange mixture of hippie instrumentation and sci-fi experimentation! The group for the record is a quartet – with the core combo of Peter Stampfel on violin and vocals and Steve Weber on guitar, augmented by playwright Sam Shephard on drums and Lee Crabtree on piano and organ – plus extra vocals from the trio of Antonia, Barbara, & Wendy. The music is in the best free-thinking style of other rock on the ESP label in the 60s – and titles include "Jimmy & Crash Survey The Universe" and "The Second-Hand Watch". LP, Vinyl record album
(60s yellow label pressing – a nice copy.)
Also available Indian War Whoop (2LP pressing – with bonus tracks & download) ... LP 28.99

Noro MoralesNoro Morales En Su Ambiente ... LP
Mar Vel, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Beautiful spare sounds from Noro Morales – and an album that really lets you hear his amazing work on the piano! Most of the album simply features Noro's playing, backed by bass and percussion, and no other orchestration – a really stripped-down setting that's even more spare than the usual Latin album of this nature! The album's very mellow – but has a good late night Latin groove throughout – thanks to this pronounced bassline that really grabs up the bottom end of the sound spectrum – leaving Noro to work on the keys up top. Titles include "Flores Negras", "Tres Palabras", "Tiempos Viejos", "Silencio", "Perfume De Gardenias", and "Palmeras". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label mono pressing, with deep groove. Cover has clear tape on the top & bottom seams, some aging & light surface wear.)

✨✧ Vince GuaraldiBoy Named Charlie Brown – Original TV Soundtrack ... LP
Fantasy, Mid 60s. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Vince Guaraldi's wonderful music for the first-ever cartoon to feature the Peanuts characters in animated form – a sublime batch of jazz instrumentals that forever changed the face of music in shows of this nature! Vince steps out with an amazing sound right from the start – even different than his previous jazz records from the San Francisco scene – with a more careful balance of swing and sadness, lyricism and soul – always played in a subtle, understated way that really makes the music come through with a lasting degree of power. Core sounds are from the trio of Guaraldi on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Colin Bailey on drums – and titles include key early versions of the "Charlie Brown Theme" and "Linus & Lucy" – plus "Oh Good Grief", Pebble Beach", "Schroeder", and "Blue Charlie Brown". LP, Vinyl record album
(2021 Craft Baseball Card Edition pressing, still sealed with hype sticker.)

✨✧ Egberto GismontiDanca Das Cabecas ... LP
ECM, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really unique moment for Brazilian genius Egberto Gismonti – as the album marks a strong move away from some of the fuller orchestrations of his previous sets! The album features Gismonti on acoustic 8 string guitar – mixed with piano, wood flutes, and voice – plus some sublime percussion touches from Nana Vasconcelos, whose organic quality on berimbau and other instruments really brings out a sense of nature in Gismonti's music. The sounds here are as wonderfully understated as previous Gismonti records were powerful – and there's no vocals or other instrumentation, but the record seems to have the same power as some of Egberto's more direct music. Titles include "Porta Encantada", "Quarto Mundo #2", "Aguas Luminosas", "Danca Solitaria", and "Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Yusef LateefGong ... LP
Savoy, 1957. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of the genius work that Yusef Lateef cut for the Savoy label in his early years – a haunting mix of hardbop and exotic instrumentation that may well be some of Lateef's greatest music ever! Yusef plays tenor and flute, and he's backed by a Detroit group that includes Wilbur Harden on flugelhorn, Hugh Lawson on piano and ocarina, Ernie Farrow on bass and earthboard and Oliver Jackson on drums and gong. 13 numbers in all, including "Prayer To The East", "8540 12th Street", 'Sounds Of Nature", "Seulb", "Lover Man", "Gypsy Arab", "Night In Tunisia", 'Love Dance", "Sram","Endura" and "Delilah". ✨✧ Marshall McLuhan/Jerome AgelMedium Is The Massage ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real mind-trip – and an incredible document of the times – not just ideas floating around in the late 60s, but also new ways of making records too! The album is loosely based around ideas and writings from The Medium Is The Massage – McLuhan's important 1967 book, co-written with Quentin Fiore – and represented here as a wild sound collage that blends together music, sounds, media snippets, and readings by McLuhan, Fiore, and a host of other voices! The album's actually much more of a "happening" than a spoken word album – a real studio party that's cut up and messed up by all the added effects, sounds, and music – genius that comes from Jerome Agel, who put the whole project together – and delivered it to the loving hands of John Simon, who produced some other wonderful records of this nature for late 60s Columbia. A real delight throughout – and the kind of an album we wish people still kept making! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 2 eye pressing.)

✨✧ Houston PersonUnderground Soul! ... LP
Prestige, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual setting for the tenor of Houston Person – in that the four-person group features very prominent trombone work from Mark Levine, whose soulful sound is a great match for Person – plus hammond from Charles Boyston, a player we don't know at all, but who sounds great here – and drums from Frank Jones. The sound is a very groovy one – similar to some of Person's work with Johnny Hammond's combo – and the tracks have a bit more of a bite than some of his later prestige work. Titles include "Ballin", "The Pimp", and "Underground Soul" – which should give you an idea of the nature of the proceedings! LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has some light wear, and a small stamp on back – but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ SkySky 2 ... LP
Arista, 1980. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The big second album from Sky – a record that's twice as long as the first, and which gives the group even more room for instrumental explorations! As before, the guitar sounds here are both acoustic and electric – played by both John Williams, the virtuoso musician with classical roots, and Kevin Peek, who's got more rock experience – and the group also features really strong keyboards from Francis Monkman, plus bass from the great Herbie Flowers, and thundering drums from Tristan Fry! The sound is a balance of fullness and space – much more so than other fusion records of this nature – and while Williams' solos sometimes have older elements in their phrasing, the overall sound is pretty progressive – in the best 70s mainstream way. Titles include "Fifo", "Sahara", "Dance Of The Little Fairies", "Ballet Volta", "Gavotte & Variations", "El Cielo", and "Tristan's Magic Garden". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eden Ahbez & OthersExotic World Of Eden Ahbez (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Hills Of Hollywood, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A totally great set that goes way beyond the few familiar sounds we know from the legendary Eden Ahbez – the strange mystical figure who was to LA exotic music what Moondog was to the sounds of the streets of New York! The set steps around Eden's one and only album for Del-Fi – and features side projects from the same time, a few rare outtakes, and cool records done in collaboration with other artists – many of which have a surprisingly jazzy vibe at times! Like Eden's one album from before, the sound here is wonderful – very moody, often eerie, and pitched very different than the mainstream of exotica – much more towards the more offbeat sound of the underground. Titles include "Anna Was Mine", "Nature Girl", and "Tobago (inst)" by Eden Ahbez – plus "John John" by Nature Boy & Friends, "End Of Desire" and "California" by Nature Boy Orchestra, "Sahara" and "Zen" by Bob Romeo & The Jungle Sextet, "Nature Boy" by Don Reed & Lorelei, "Yes Master" by Don Carson & The Casuals, and "Ahbe Casabe" by Marti Barris. ✨✧ Dead Can DanceDead Can Dance ... LP
4AD (UK), 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The start of a wonderful run of sounds – the debut album from Dead Can Dance, and a set that's maybe more linked to the larger world of 4AD Records than some of their later material! All the moody touches we love are already in place – those amazing ancient-sounding vocals of Lisa Gerrard, and that blend of exotic percussion and European string instrumentation that works surprisingly well – yet there's also elements that echo a bit of the Factory Records groups, and maybe other 4AD work – stronger drum patterns at points, and maybe a bit more coldness in the production. That blend makes for a record that's a great step after hearing Joy Division or groups of that nature – and titles include "Musica Eternal", "A Passage In Time", "East Of Eden", "Threshold", "The Fatal Impact", "Fortune", and "Ocean". ✨✧ Charles MingusBlack Saint & The Sinner Lady ... LP
Impulse, 1963. Sealed Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic – and one of Mingus' greatest albums ever! This one ranks right up with The Clown and Pithecantropus Erectus for sheer raw power and emotion – and Mingus' writing here is incredibly tight, giving soloists like Charlie Mariano, Jaki Byard, Richard Williams, and Jerome Richardson a real workout. The set's an extended suite of tracks with sort of a semi-ballet form. Don't let this fool you into thinking that the work's some sort of semi-classical snoozer, though – as Mingus uses the structure to hit some brilliant raw emotion, and the "dance" part of the piece gives the work a tight rhythmic form, pushing the soloists into raw urgent grooves, of a nature that never show up on Mingus' other work from the time. Titles include "Trio & Group Dancers", "Solo Dancer", "Group & Solo Dance", and "Duet Solo Dancers". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wes MontgomeryWillow Weep For Me ... LP
Verve, 1965/1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A strange little record, but a great one too – a posthumous album that took older Wes Montgomery sides and souped them up a bit after his death! The core material here is quartet recordings done in 1965 – Montgomery's guitar in a hip group with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – other material recorded at the same time as the Smokin At The Half Note set, discovered later by Verve, and augmented with fuller backings from Claus Ogerman for this record in 1968. In contrast to some of Wes' other albums of this nature, the core combo grooving was done first, which then ends up directing Ogerman's arrangements – and not the other way around – making for a really unique mix of sounds, especially on some of the longer tracks. Titles include "Four On Six", "Oh You Crazy Moon", "Willow Weep For Me", "Misty", "Impressions", and "Portrait Of Jennie". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousAnxious Color – Stranger Than Fiction Psych Rock 1966 to 1967 ... LP
Timerocker, 1966/1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Weird and wild garage tracks from the mid 60s – but work that's usually got a feel that's a lot different than more familiar sounds from the time! Lots of these tunes are from weird, offbeat sources – some overseas, but still mostly American – but produced by artists who have a very personal, offbeat vibe – with lots of strange echoes of styles that are quite far from the mainstream. Plus, we've never seen any of these tracks before – and the package is way different than the usual collection of this nature. Titles include "Last Drop Of Wine" by Jimm Olson, "How I Feel" by Little Willie & The Wonders, "Like Stoned" by The Bohemians, "Gone To The Moon" by The Savages, "Leaving My Old Life Behind" by Jonathan Halper, and "Don't Break My Heart" by Vicki Lynn. ✨✧ VariousRough Guide To Peru Rare Groove ... LP
Rough Guide, 1960s/1970s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Sweet sounds from the Peruvian scene of the 60s and 70s – music that starts in more familiar Latin modes, then quickly expands to a range of other hip South American sounds! The mix of modes here is maybe similar to the Colombian music of the period – sometimes romping with fast-moving rhythms, sometimes a bit more complicated, in ways that really unlock the jazzier sides of the instrumentation – and which echo some of our favorite New York work of the time. There's a few organ-heavy tracks that are especially great – and the package is put together by Pablo Yglesias, who's done some other great sets of this nature. Titles include "Lamparita" by Los Compadres Del Ande, "Lluvia Con Nieve/El Molestoso" by Carlos Pickling Y Su Organo Espacial, "Lobos Al Escape" by Andres De Colbert Y Su Orquesta, "La Palmadita" by Los Blacanguay, "Son Con Boogaloo" by Pedro Miguel Y Sus Maracaibos, "Tambores De La Selva" by Juaneco Y Su Combo, and "Nuestro Pobreza" by Chacal Y Sus Estrellas. ✨✧ Natalie ColeUnforgettable With Love ... LP
Elektra, 1991. Very Good+ 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An unforgettable album from Natalie Cole – a record that came at a time when her R&B career was faltering slightly, and a set that not only helped Natalie reach a new level of sophistication in her music – but also find a huge new audience too! If the title sounds familiar, it's because it's the name of a huge hit for Natalie's dad, the great Nat King Cole – who makes a surprising appearance here via the magic of technology, as he duets with his daughter on the album's hit title track. There's a jazzy vibe to the whole set – thanks in part to some piano work by Ike Cole too – and titles include "The Very Thought Of You", "Paper Moon", "Mona Lisa", 'This Can't Be Love", "Lush Life", "That Sunday That Summer", "Avalon", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Nature Boy", "Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", "Thou Swell", and "Unforgettable". ✨✧ Fever TreeFever Tree ... LP
Uni, 1968. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Late 60s psych from Texas – the self-titled set from Fever Tree – which finds group adapting some outside penned tunes of the day nicely into the good natured psychedelic groove. The arrangements are what make the group special, rolling from soaring pop sounds into harder edged TX school of psychedelia, and back again. Instrumentation includes the kind of core rock sound with keys, harp, flute, cello and more – and the record even sports some string & horn arrangements by David Angel and Gene Page! Titles include "Imitation Situation 1", "Where Do You Go?", "Return Of The Native", "Man Who Paints The Pictures", "The Sun Also Rises", "Unlock My Door", "Come With Me" and more. ✨✧ TurtlesTurtles Present The Battle of The Bands ... LP
White Whale, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest concepts ever for a 60s rock record – and maybe one of the standout sets from The Turtles! The album is set up as a "Battle Of The Bands" – one that has the group pretending to be a different ensemble from track to track on the record, either Natures Children, Fats Mallard & The Bluegrass Fireball, The Bigg Brothers, The LA Bust '66, and many other fake combos – all in a way that offers up a brilliant commentary on rock music in the late 60s! The effortlessness with which the group approaches the songs is fantastic – each number could have been a hit for the individual groups, were they real. One of our favorite tracks is the incredible "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea", played by the Royal Macademia Nuts – which has an incredible funky breakbeat all the way through! Another nice one is the funky cut "Buzzsaw", which has a fuzzy guitar groove that sounds a lot like "Tramp" – and other titles include "Surfer Dan", "The Last Thing I Remember", "Elenore", "You Showed Me", "Food", and "Chicken Little Was Right". ✨✧ Blood Sweat & TearsBlood Sweat & Tears 4 ... LP
Columbia, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
We never really know whether we want to call Blood, Sweat & Tears a funky, soulful rock band, or a bunch of white guys making a respectable effort at curring soul albums, but either way, the stuff sounds good to us! By this point the group had enjoyed enough chart success to stretch out a bit, but their signature horn driven combination of bluesy rock bluster and heavily charted jazz voiced riffery is still in place. Includes "Go Down Gamblin'", "John The Baptist (Holy John)", "Redemption", "Lisa Listen To Me", "High On A Mountain", "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)" and "Mama Gets High".
