Philly soul classics from The Manhattans – the mid 70s self-titled gem and After Midnight from the dawn of the 80s! The Manhattans album is one of their best of the 70s, and a record that showed that they were firmly out of the indie ghetto, and totally on top of their game! The record features arrangements and production by Bobby Martin and Bert DeCoteaux – bubbling along in that soaring style that you'd recognize best from Philly International albums of the time, but which also has some nice traces of the mellower ballad work that first put the group on the map. Every tune is perfect – the kind of sublime soul that easily explains why a record like this could be found in every single record collection of every single soul listener of the time – and titles include "La La La Wish Upon A Star", "We'll Have Forever To Love", "Take It Or Leave It", "Reasons", "Wonderful World Of Love", "Searching For Love", and the incredible "Kiss & Say Goodbye". Several bonus tracks, too! After Midnight is stellar Manhattans from the start of the 80s – and proof that the group could still hold strong, even at a point when soul music was really changing up around them! The sound is somewhat smoother than before, but never in a throwaway style – and as you might guess from the title, the record's a mostly-mellow affair that really hones in on the great ballad style that the group had perfected during their time at Columbia! The vocals are superb – not nearly as fragile as in the early days, but really still filled with a great sense of warmth and humanity – the group really maturing into a special space of their own. A key later album from alto saxophonist Benny Carter – one that has him at the helm of a largeish group, but playing with a nicely focused sort of groove! In addition to Benny's alto, the record also features tenor sax from Charlie Rouse and Coleman Hawkins, plus one more alto from Phil Woods – supported by rhythm from John Collins on guitar, Dick Katz on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Jo Jones on drums. The tunes are traditional, but have some sharper-edged modern ideas on some of the solos – and there's a nicely echoey feel to the production, which further adds to the quality of the record. The album's a bit like a Swingville session for Prestige, but has a bit more going on – and titles include "Doozy", "Blue Star", "Midnight Sun Will Never Set", and "Crazy Rhythm". Common newcomers who buy Electric Circus for the single with Mary J Blige are going to be left with some head scratching – but if you like the spiritual/psychedelic Com that was hinted at on Like Water For Chocolate, this may be the follow up you were waiting for! This is still hip hop – with production by the Neptunes, Jay Dee, ?uestlove and others, but it's definitely a boundary stretcher. The mood runs from Roots style soul bumpers to Hendrix and Eugene McDaniels style feedback heavy freakouts. There's a guest on nearly every track, mostly from the Okayplayer camp and NuSoul titans, including Bilal, Omar, Pharrell Williams, Cee-Lo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab and others. We won't lie to you, we miss the Chicago hip hop Common that kicked insight over raw and soulful productions, but you can't fault the guy for being an artist, and he really has crafted something original here. A great cover – a kind of rainbow drenched cut and paste photo collage of the contributors and inspirations with Com out front, sort of reminding us of Tribe's Midnight Maurauders, and even Sgt. A Japanese-only album that features rare material recorded by Jimmy's trio in the late 50s – with a guest appearance by Lou Donaldson on alto sax! Apart from one track – "Cha Cha J", which was issued as a 45 – the material on the set was never issued before this release, which is a shame, because it's every bit as great as you'd imagine. Lou had blown with Jimmy on some other "jam session" albums – but this set lets him open up in a more intimate mode, working well with Jimmy's organ technique on tunes like "Star Eyes", "Soft Winds", 'Hollerin & Screamin", and "Round Midnight". The album often has Claude taking his time on the intros to the tunes – setting things up in broad flourishes in a near-solo mode, before letting the bass and drums come into play – and this style creates a nicely moody feel that matches the late nite image of the cover. There has never been another group like Andy & The Bey Sisters – an amazing jazz-based trio of voices that featured a young Andy Bey (who later went onto sing with Gary Bartz and Horace Silver) plus his two swingin sisters! The trio mixes jazz vocal styles with other influences – like bossa harmonizing or gospel soul – and their records from the 60s are wonderful gems, dripping with soul and emotion that you'll hardly ever find on other vocal jazz LPs from the time, transforming songs into sublime versions that differ greatly from other renditions. This long-overdue CD brings together two of their rare albums for Prestige – Now Hear and Round Midnight – both nearly impossible to find on vinyl, and never issued before on CD.
