A very early album in the French tradition of providing key recordings of American blues musicians – a live set with MemphisSlim on vocals and piano, and the great Matt Murphy on guitar! LP, Vinyl record album
(Back cover has some light aging – front is nice. A great copy.)
A great little album from MemphisSlim – recorded with a few rock luminaries (John Paul Jones, Chris Spedding, Peter Winfield, Peter Green), in a sweetly electric mode that has Slim singing some excellent laidback lyrics. There's a bit of jazz to the backings, which gives the album a slick sparkle without dampening its spirit – and tracks include "Youth Wants To Know", "Mason Dixon Line", "Chicago Seven", "Otis Spann & Earl Hooker", and the extended "Blue Memphis Suite". Real Folk Blues ... LP Chess, 1950s/Early 60s. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
MemphisSlim's installment in this excellent LP series from Chess – 60s packagings of earlier recordings done by key bluesmen in the Chicago scene, with slightly improved fidelity but enough of the "real folk blues" sound to warrant the title! Instrumentation here is a bit more augmented than some of the others in the series, as some tunes feature a bit of sax alongside Slim's bluesy piano and light percussion backing – but the overall feel is still quite rootsy. Titles include "For A Day", "Mother Earth", "Blues For My Baby", "Marack", "Having Fun", "Tijuana", and "Trouble Trouble". LP, Vinyl record album
Booker T's definitely getting a bit funky with this one – stepping off with the incredible title cut, a tune which really complicates the groove from the earlier years! The sound is still solid Memphis soul, with a raw instrumental vibe – but the grooves are even better than before, and the set includes loads of great original number written by the group – the kind of cool tunes they most likely cooked up while jamming live in the studio! These gems include the seminal "Hip Hug Her" – plus "Carnaby Street", "Booker's Notion", "Soul Sanction", "Double Or Nothing", and "Slim Jenkins' Place". But the covers are groovy too – and include a version of "Pigmy", plus "Groovin" and "Sunny". LP, Vinyl record album
Features Sonny Boy Williamson on harmonic and vocals – in a trio with guitar from Matt Murphy and drums from Billie Stepney – plus added piano from MemphisSlim on a few tracks! LP, Vinyl record album
Great material from this famous German blues festival – with work by MemphisSlim, Willie Dixon, T Bone Walker, Jump Jackson, Sonny Terry, John Lee Hooker, and Shakey Jake! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 60s stereo German Polydor pressing in the booklet cover.)

A side each of these two important talents in blues – presented here in a format that makes the record a real double-header! Side one features Big Bill Broonzy in the lead – working with sweet electric lines on guitar alongside acoustic and his own really rich vocals – plus this very cool rhythm accompaniment from Washboard Sam, whose instrument has a way of coming across like some quickly snapped snare drum! Sam takes the lead on side two – singing and playing his instrument – and is joined on a few tracks by Broonzy's guitar and some piano from MemphisSlim. Big Bill titles include "Lonesome", "Little City Woman", "Romance Without Finance", and "By Myself" – and Washboard Sam numbers include "Never Never", "Minding My Own Business", "I'm A Lonely Man", and "Horseshoe Over My Door". LP, Vinyl record album
War became so popular on their own in later years that it's easy to forget how they first sprung onto the soul charts – here, in an album of many styles that was put together by the wayward Eric Burdon after the dissolution of The Animals. We have to admit that Burdon was a genius to hook onto the rich talents of this LA combo – even though he really didn't know what to do with them on this record. Part of the album's an homage to Roland Kirk, part is an extended reworking of "Tobacco Road", and part is an overly-long bluesy passage called "Blues For MemphisSlim". Fortunately, the record also includes the monster groover "Spill The Wine", one of the first big crossover tracks to popularize the Chicano funk sound of LA – and a great little groover that still hooks us in today. Very much in the Folkways vein – with work by MemphisSlim, Arbee Stidham, Jack Dupree, Brownie McGhee, Leadbelly, Big Bill Broonzy, and Woody Guthrie. LP, Vinyl record album
