A set that features lots of great arrangements from Shorty Rogers – upbeat and jazzy, in ways that aren't exactly the Latin modes promised by the title, but still pretty darn great! Rogers his hitting nicely here on all burners – that leaner 60s approach he used in some of his own great records of the time, with rhythms that borrow a bit from bossa and Latin jazz, but turn their elements towards a west coast sort of groove in the end. Lennie Hayton conducts the orchestra, but he's definitely moving in a Rogers-directed mode – much more so than on earlier dates with Lena for RCA. Titles include "Meditation", "More", "Old Devil Moon", "My Blue Heaven", "Cuckoo In The Clock", "From This Moment On", and "Take Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono blue label pressing. Cover has light wear and a cutout hole.)

LenaHorne —
Soul ... LP United Artists, 1966. Very Good ...
$1.99
Groovy LenaHorne from the 60s – an album that's a heck of a lot hipper and more swinging than most of her sets from a decade before! That unmistakable Horne style of singing is still very much in place here – but the backings are often tightly punctuated, with a gently soulful groove that definitely lives up to the title, and which serves up most of the tracks with a nice little sense of rhythm. Ray Ellis is working here with Lena on the backings – and his style is arguably a bit groovier than usual too, with more of the syncopations you might find in mid 60s Quincy Jones or Oliver Nelson. Titles include "I Got A Worried Man", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", "Love Bug", "Taste Of Honey", "I'd Like To Hear It Sometime", and "You Know What To Do". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has split top & bottom seams, some surface wear.)
One of Lena's best from the RCA years – with arrangements by Ralph Burns and Lennie Hayton, on titles that include "Love", "Let's Put Out The Lights & Go To Sleep", "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend", "Honey In The Honeycomb", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging, mostly in back.)
One of LenaHorne's greatest albums of the 50s – a rock-solid effort that takes its name from her famous film appearance of the 40s, but which features some wonderfully sophisticated songs in a very postwar mode! As with other RCA dates of the time, the orchestra's handled by Lena's partner Lennie Hayton – and has a nice jazzy pitch, especially on tunes that feature trumpet solos from Charlie Shavers. Titles include "Summertime", "Mad About The Boy", "Tomorrow Mountain", "Ridin On The Moon", "I Wonder What Became Of Me", and "Just One Of Those Things". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove and 4S matrix.)

LenaHorne & Gabor Szabo —
Lena & Gabor ... LP Skye, 1970. Very Good ...
Out Of Stock
Think what you want about LenaHorne – but this is a plenty darn groovy album! Sure, Lena's style is usually a bit classy and uptown – almost so much so that we don't really dig most of her records. But here, she's working in a very groovy style – paired with the great guitarist Gabor Szabo, in a set of sweetly swinging tunes that share many touches with Gabor's grooviest sides for Impulse and Skey in the 60s! Gabor produced and arranged with Gary McFarland – and the pair really transform the sound of Lena's voice, taking her normally-poised vocals and loosening them up with a subtly funky undercurrent. Richard Tee plays some great organ on the set, in a small combo that also includes Grady Tate and Chuck Rainey – and titles include a lot of Beatles covers – like "Rocky Raccoon", "Fool On The Hill", and "In My Life" – plus the cuts "Nightwind", "Watch What Happens", and "My Mood Is You". LP, Vinyl record album

A who's who of female vocalists, 24 tracks including Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Nancy Wilson, Keely Smith, LenaHorne, Rosemary Clooney, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall and many others. CD
Louis Armstrong is on the cover, but the set also features work from a nice mix of "friends" – other important artists from the postwar years, who help round out this collection of Holiday favorites! Louis Armstrong sings on "Christmas In New Orleans", "White Christmas", "Christmas Night In Harlem", "Winter Wonderland", "Zat You Santa Claus", and "Cool Yule" – and other tracks include "Silent Night" by Dinah Washington, "The Christmas Song" by Mel Torme, "It's Christmas Time Again" by Peggy Lee, "May Everyday Be Christmas" by Louis Jordan, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by LenaHorne, "Merry Christmas Baby" by Lionel Hampton, "Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt, and "Jingle Bells" by Duke Ellington. CD
A pretty cool record – even if it is mostly a "hi fi" sampler from RCA. The record demonstrates the full range of RCA's Living Stereo method – and it's got Ken Nordine narrating his way through a host of tracks from the label. As is typical with this sort of thing, about half of the music is classical – but there's also some nice numbers in the easy mode by Skitch Henderson, Ralph Flanagan, LenaHorne, and Jerome Hines. The best part is still Ken Nordine, though! LP, Vinyl record album
Ten songs from Lionel Hampton, Otis Redding, JB Summer, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fats Waller, LenaHorne, Louis Armstrong and Benny Carter, Dinah Washington, and Johnny Otis. CD
Includes tracks by Tony Sacco, Sky, Bob Seger, Roy Milton, Sheb Wooley, Jo Stafford, Bobby Vinton, LenaHorne, Saint Nick, and Billy Wilson. 25 tracks total. CD

Michel Legrand —
RCA Years ... CD BMG/RCA (Japan), Early 70s. Used ...
Out Of Stock
A great little look at Michel Legrand's years with RCA Records – a time when the famous French soundtrack composer was returning to some of his roots in jazz, and also providing backdrops for some singers as well! The scope of work here is really great – from hard-swinging big band material to smaller combo jazz, to vocal numbers that really show the warmth and feeling of Legrand's lyrics as well as his music. Most of the work here has been out of print for years, even on CD, and the package does a great job of mixing up the modes with a sense of fullness that goes even beyond the regular albums. Titles include "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" and "Sweet Gingerbread Man" with Jack Jones, "I Will Wait For You" and "One At A Time" with LenaHorne, and "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "Snowbird Serenade", "The Summer Knows", "Watch What Happens", "The Saddest Thing Of All", and "Splittons" as jazz numbers by Legrand. CD
A dozen tracks from LenaHorne, Carmen McRae, and Della Reese. CD
