A rare side from Keith Hudson, teaming up with Bullwackie Barnes for a mighty set – two of our favorite producers in one place – and one that's been painfully hard to come by for some time. Issued originally on the Joint International imprint in the early 80s, we can't remember the last time we came across a copy of this set, featuring deep space dub mixes, with gut rumbling bass and murky reverb following hot on the heels of their vocal accompaniment, voiced by Wayne Jarrett, the Lovejoys and Hudson himself. A set that definitely lives up to the poetry promised in its title – with none of the too-clean sounds you might guess from its hand-washing reference either! The album's one of the freest, most organic sessions we've heard from pianist Masabumi Kikuchi – almost improvised at points, but with a poetic cohesion in the piano lines that's really great – kind of an offbeat sense of lyricism that points in the same directions that Steve Kuhn or Keith Jarrett were heading in the late 60s. Drummer Masahiko Togashi plays lots of cool percussion and even a bit of gong – and Gary Peacock's bass here is as great as on any of his other excellent Japanese recordings. Beautiful solo piano work from Marek Latarnik Pedziwiatr – a player you might know for his crucial contributions to the groups EABS and Jaubi – sounding very different and a lot more personal here on his own! Latarnik's touch on the piano is often very rhythmic and lyrical at the same time – less of the freer flights of Keith Jarrett improvisations, or the spacious tones of Bugge Wesseltoft in such a mode – and instead working in a way that uses the instrument to create these really wonderful cycles of sound – sometimes with a gentle pulse, sometimes with a much fuller flow! A gem of a record from pianist Finn Savery – a set that's at once immediately modern, yet also filled with warmer tones and sadder notes from years past! In a way, Savery seems to link together the 60s experiments of pianists like Steve Kuhn or Keith Jarrett with a more timeworn sensibility that takes us back to small club piano of the postwar years – a unique blend of modes that darts out boldly at one minute, but holds close with a sense of sentiment the next. The trio here features impeccable work from Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Alex Riel on drums – and titles include "Queen's Fancy", "But Not For Me", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Satin Doll" – but all done in very abstracted versions that are unlike anything we've ever heard before! Really magical work from a young Denny Zeitlin – one of a few key players in the second wave of jazz piano talent in the 60s – post-Bill Evans, and equally important as artists like Steve Kuhn or Keith Jarrett! Zeitlin's got the inventive sensibilities of both of those players at their start – a new way of phrasing notes, finding fresh tones, and working with a looser approach to rhythm – handled here by the excellent duo of Cecil McBee on bass and Freddy Waits on drums! Zeitlin's also a hell of a writer, too – most tunes here are originals – and titles include "Stonehenge", "Cathexis", "I Thou", "Blue Phoenix", and "Nica's Tempo". It's no surprise that Zeitlin's continued to make compelling music all these many decades later – but he was already wonderful at the start! 2 bonus tracks – "Nica's Dream" and "Requiem For Lili". The reach of Miles Davis is plenty wide – as right from the start, the trumpeter was associating himself with some of the hippest young talent on the scene! Yet the apex of those associations may have come in the late 60s and early 70s, when the newly-electric Miles was experimenting in all sorts of new rhythms and instrumental combinations – and inviting a whole host of soon-to-be-legends to help him with his projects! This set is a great overview of some of those key contemporaries – and the way that they took new directions of their own, when away from Miles – some very much in the spirit of the Bitches Brew generation, others opening up in whole new frontiers of soul and spirit.
