KassinSonhando Devagar (with download) ... LP
20/20/20, 2013. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 19.99
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with bonus download – and 3D glasses for looking at the cover!)

Me & The PlantRomantic Journeys Of Pollen ... CD
Criato (Brazil), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99
A cool contemporary set from Brazil – one that's got a great mix of folksy roots and inventive production – the latter of which comes from some great help in the studio by Kassin! Kassin co-produced the recorded with singer Vitor Patalano – whom himself already has a pretty compelling musical vision – one that almost echoes the hippest aspects of the late 60s/early 70s UK scene on labels like Harvest or Decca – yet which also comes across with a leaner, more personal feel too – one that's amplified strongly by Kassin's efforts. The record's a gem through and through – the sort that might have broke big, had it come out on a hipster label in the US – but even better as a Brazilian secret (at least for now!) Lyrics are all in English – and titles include "Cordillera Girl", "Not The Time", "Seagulls", "Death Cheating Tuna Cowboys", "Butcher The Savior", "We Want Your Genes", and "The Core". CD

New Orquestra ImperialFazendo As Pazes Com O Swing ... CD
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2011. New Copy .... $15.99
Maybe the greatest record so far from this ultra-hip Brazilian group – a set that has the range of singers and musicians coming together wonderfully – in a really rich sound that's way more than the sum of its already-great parts! The album features vocals by Moreno Veloso, Nina Becker, Thalma De Freitas, and others – and features lots of hip instrumentation from Kassin, Domenico, Wilson Das Neves, and many others – a list of players large enough to be the orchestra promised in the title – but moving with a groove that's tight enough to match the work of Kassin or Moreno on other records! Many tunes echo older bossa, samba, and MPB elements, yet the style is pretty fresh as well – aware of the past, but not just rehashing it – thanks to a very inventive presentation overall. Titles include "Cair Na Folia", "Fala Chorando", "Moleculas", "Tamancas Do Caterete", "A Saudade E Que Me Consola", "Mocoto Em Tijuana", and "Apaixonado". CD

Orquestra ImperialOrquestra Imperial Ao Vivo ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2013. New Copy .... $22.99
Beautiful live work from this totally great Brazilian collective – a group who's large enough to win the Orquesta in their name, but who work together with a cohesiveness that's more in a small group mode! The vocals alone are totally great – sung in a shifting lineup that includes Nina Becker, Moreno Veloso, Thalma De Freitas, and Rodrigo Amarante – each of whom bring a different flavor to the proceedings, and deepen the rich spirit of the tunes! Instrumentation is relatively traditional – with lots of great acoustic percussion, guitar, and horns – but given that the trio of Veloso, Dominco, and Kassin are a key part of the group, you can bet that the arrangements have plenty of fresh twists and turns as well. Titles include "Obsessao", "Nao Foi Em Vao", "Matematica Do Desejo", "Rue Des Mes Souvenirs", "Gomalina", "Dr Sabe Tudo", and a totally cool cover of the Perry-Kingsley tune "Popcorn"! CD

Lucas SanttanaSem Nostalgia ... CD
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2009. New Copy Gatefold .... $15.99
Another bold leap forward for Lucas Santtana – a Brazilian artist who really blows our mind with each new release! It's been a few years since we last heard from Lucas, but it's clear he's been doing plenty during the time – coming up with fresh new ideas, working on some English-based lyrics, and continuing to deepen his role as one of the greatest contemporary musicians working in Brazil! Some of the set echoes the dubbier styles of Lucas' last album – but other bits are more acoustic, and show a whole different sonic aspect in his music – one that almost moves towards the Kassin/Domenico camp, but with a quality that's a bit more personal too – possibly because of the English lyrics on about half of the album's tracks. The guitar is often produced with a weird echoey edge – vaguely metallic, yet still surprisingly warm – and Santtana's vocals have really developed a great sense of feeling over the years. Titles include "Who Can Say Which Way", "Super Violao Mashup", "Amor Em Jacuma", "Ca Pra Nos", "I Can't Live Far From My Music", "Hold Me In", "Natureza #1 Em Mi Maior", "Ripple Of The Water", and "Cira Regina E Nana". New Vanessa Da MataSegue O Som ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2014. New Copy .... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really wonderful work from Vanessa Da Mata – a Brazilian singer who just seems to get better and better over the years! The set features sublime production from guitarist Liminha and bassist Kassin – the latter of whom always has this amazing way of folding things together, so that complicated elements come off with effortless ease – really making for a complexity in the music, but one that's quite subtle too. Vanessa's up front, letting her incredible voice really soar out over the top of the tunes – while Kassin and Liminha keep things very fresh from an instrumental perspective. Titles include "Segue O Som", "Homem Preto", "Por Onde Ando Tenho Voce", "My Grandmother Told Me", "Rebola Nega", "Um Sorriso Entre Nos Dois", and "Nao Sei Dizer Adeus". CD

New Thais GulinoOOooOoO ... CD
Slap (Brazil), 2011. Used .... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a great record – as you might already guess from the fact that Kassin produced the album, and it also features guest appearances by Chico Buarque and Tom Ze! Yet Thais Gulin is clearly the main draw here – a really lovely, inventive singer with a freshness that comes through on the very first tune – the haunting string of "ooo" sounds in the title, set to sounds that are earthy enough to be earnest, yet gentle enough to sensitively deliver Thais to the public. The rest of the record follows with a similar balance between charm and creative expression – and titles include "Little Boxes", "Encantada", "Cinema Americano", "The Glory Hole", "Agua", "Horas Cariocas", "Se Eu Soubesse", and "Revendo Amigos". New Bebel GilbertoBebel Gilberto In Rio (DVD) ... DVD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2013. New Copy .... Out Of Stock
A beautiful set in a beautiful setting – Bebel Gilberto in Rio, sounding even warmer and more soulful than ever before! The album's got a depth that goes beyond some of the simple bossa-rework of Gilberto's earliest record, and a maturity that even goes past recent work, too – a factor that may come partially from the musical backings, which were co-produced by Kassin and Liminha, who take traditional elements and make them crackle a bit more – but without any too-contemporary tricks or bossa-remix clunkiness. Some tunes are in English, most are in Portuguese – and Bebel manages to bring together some older classics with lots of her own great work as well. Titles include a great remake of "Bananeira", plus "Simplesmente", "August Day Song", "Rio", "Momento", "Tanto Tempo", "Sun Is Shining", "Samba E Amor", and "Close Your Eyes". DVD
