KassinSonhando Devagar (3D packaging – comes with glasses) ... CD
Coqueiro Verde (Brazil), 2011. New Copy .... $26.99
Breezy, yet innovative work from Kassin – who is still best known (in our parts, anyway) for the run of teriffic trio sets he made with Moreno Veloso and Domenico in the 00s – and it's really high time for him to gain a broader audience of his own all around the world. This could be the album that does it, as it's truly excellent. Help us spread the word, please! The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te" and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando" and more.
(Pretty cool 3D artwork. Comes with old school style red & blue lens cardboard 3D glasses!)

Domenico — Cine Prive ... CD
Plug Research, 2011. New Copy .... $9.99
A groovy little record from Domenico – one that's got the same best elements of his music with Moreno Veloso and Kassin, but which almost has a more intimate feel overall! Most tunes here have a relatively tight song structure – almost always with lyrics by Domenico, although Moreno joins in and sings a bit too – and backed with small combo instrumentation that's mostly played live, but occasionally inflected with the kinds of subtle production twists we've always loved in the music of Domenico! It's always hard to describe the exact charm of Domenico's music – but if you've heard him before – or frequent partners Kassin and Moreno Veloso – then you'll know exactly why we like this one so much. Titles include "Cine Prive", "Receita", "Su Di Te", "Sua Beleza", "Zona Portuaria", "Pedra A Areia", "Hugo Carvana" and more. 13 in all.
Also available: Cine Prive (2 X 10" vinyl pressing) ... LP $19.99

Thais Gulin — oOOooOoO ... CD
Slap (Brazil), 2011. New Copy .... $22.99
A hell of a great record – as you might already guess from the fact that Kassin produced the album, and it also features guest appearances by Chico Buarque and Tom Ze! Yet Thais Gulin is clearly the main draw here – a really lovely, inventive singer with a freshness that comes through on the very first tune – the haunting string of "ooo" sounds in the title, set to sounds that are earthy enough to be earnest, yet gentle enough to sensitively deliver Thais to the public. The rest of the record follows with a similar balance between charm and creative expression – and titles include "Little Boxes", "Encantada", "Cinema Americano", "The Glory Hole", "Agua", "Horas Cariocas", "Se Eu Soubesse", and "Revendo Amigos".

Me & The Plant — Romantic Journeys Of Pollen ... CD
Criato (Brazil), 2012. New Copy .... $21.99
A cool contemporary set from Brazil – one that's got a great mix of folksy roots and inventive production – the latter of which comes from some great help in the studio by Kassin! Kassin co-produced the recorded with singer Vitor Patalano – whom himself already has a pretty compelling musical vision – one that almost echoes the hippest aspects of the late 60s/early 70s UK scene on labels like Harvest or Decca – yet which also comes across with a leaner, more personal feel too – one that's amplified strongly by Kassin's efforts. The record's a gem through and through – the sort that might have broke big, had it come out on a hipster label in the US – but even better as a Brazilian secret (at least for now!) Lyrics are all in English – and titles include "Cordillera Girl", "Not The Time", "Seagulls", "Death Cheating Tuna Cowboys", "Butcher The Savior", "We Want Your Genes", and "The Core".

Orquestra Imperial — Fazendo As Pazes Com O Swing ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2011. New Copy Gatefold .... $22.99
Maybe the greatest record so far from this ultra-hip Brazilian group – a set that has the range of singers and musicians coming together wonderfully – in a really rich sound that's way more than the sum of its already-great parts! The album features vocals by Moreno Veloso, Nina Becker, Thalma De Freitas, and others – and features lots of hip instrumentation from Kassin, Domenico, Wilson Das Neves, and many others – a list of players large enough to be the orchestra promised in the title – but moving with a groove that's tight enough to match the work of Kassin or Moreno on other records! Many tunes echo older bossa, samba, and MPB elements, yet the style is pretty fresh as well – aware of the past, but not just rehashing it – thanks to a very inventive presentation overall. Titles include "Cair Na Folia", "Fala Chorando", "Moleculas", "Tamancas Do Caterete", "A Saudade E Que Me Consola", "Mocoto Em Tijuana", and "Apaixonado".

Otto — Moon 1111 ... CD
Deck Disk (Brazil), 2012. New Copy .... $21.99
A really rich new chapter in the music of Otto – an artist we've loved right from the start, but one who's blowing us away all over again with this sweet set! There's a fullness here we've never heard from Otto – not a sound that's slick, just an approach that's more thought out and fully-composed – with some classic elements on the backings that take us back to 60s sounds from Beatles to Motown at times – yet served up in ways that all still retain the freshness of Otto's earlier work. Other sounds are a bit more contemporary, yet still have this feeling of timelessness that really stands out – something we might never have said about Ottos' music before. The electronics are kept to a minimum, and tunes are straightforward and less abstract – in a way we never expected, and which shows Otto to really be a great songwriter after all these years. The set was done with heavy collaborations from producer Pupillo, who co-wrote most tracks – and also features assistance from Kassin and Catatau too. Titles include "The Moon 1111", "Dia Claro", "Ela Flava", "O Que Dira O Mundo", "DP", "Hideus", "Miss Apple E Ze Pilantra", and "Selvagens Olhos Nego".

Various — Tribute To Caetano Veloso ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2012. New Copy .... $32.99
A wonderful tribute to Caetano Veloso – put together by a really surprising range of artists! The tunes are all classic Veloso compositions – Brazilian nuggets that have been making our lives wonderful for years – and they get fresh reinterpretations by a range of artists that includes The Magic Numbers, Beck, Ceu, Chrissie Hynde, Kassin, Moreno Veloso, Tulipa Ruiz, Beck, Mariana Aydar, Seu Jorge, Toninho Horta, and others – a great mix of Brazilian and American artists who really show the far-reaching influence Caetano's had over the decades. Most numbers are pretty well done – never too commercial, and surprisingly sensitive to the lyrics, while also offering up fresh twists with their own arrangements. Titles include "The Empty Boat" by Chrissy Hynde with Moreno, Kassin, and Domenico – plus "London London" by Os Mutantes, "Michaelangelo Antonioni" by Beck, "Eclipse Oculto" by Ceu, "You Don't Know Me" by The Magic Numbers, "Araca Blue" by Marian Aydar, "Alguem Cantando" by Momo, "Quem Me Dera" by Devendra Banhart & Rodrigo Amarante, and "Peter Gast" by Seu Jorge, Toninho Horta, and Arismar Espirito Santo.
