KassinSonhando Devagar (with download) ... LP
20/20/20, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with bonus download – and 3D glasses for looking at the cover!)

New Vanessa Da MataSegue O Som ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2014. New Copy ... $18.99
Really wonderful work from Vanessa Da Mata – a Brazilian singer who just seems to get better and better over the years! The set features sublime production from guitarist Liminha and bassist Kassin – the latter of whom always has this amazing way of folding things together, so that complicated elements come off with effortless ease – really making for a complexity in the music, but one that's quite subtle too. Vanessa's up front, letting her incredible voice really soar out over the top of the tunes – while Kassin and Liminha keep things very fresh from an instrumental perspective. Titles include "Segue O Som", "Homem Preto", "Por Onde Ando Tenho Voce", "My Grandmother Told Me", "Rebola Nega", "Um Sorriso Entre Nos Dois", and "Nao Sei Dizer Adeus". CD

New Bebel GilbertoBebel Gilberto In Rio ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2013. New Copy ... $24.99
A beautiful set in a beautiful setting – Bebel Gilberto in Rio, sounding even warmer and more soulful than ever before! The album's got a depth that goes beyond some of the simple bossa-rework of Gilberto's earliest record, and a maturity that even goes past recent work, too – a factor that may come partially from the musical backings, which were co-produced by Kassin and Liminha, who take traditional elements and make them crackle a bit more – but without any too-contemporary tricks or bossa-remix clunkiness. Some tunes are in English, most are in Portuguese – and Bebel manages to bring together some older classics with lots of her own great work as well. Titles include a great remake of "Bananeira", plus "Simplesmente", "August Day Song", "Rio", "Momento", "Tanto Tempo", "Sun Is Shining", "Samba E Amor", and "Close Your Eyes". CD

Arto LindsayEncyclopedia Of Arto ... CD
Northern Spy, Mid 90s-Early 2000s/2011. New Copy 2 CDs ... $18.99 19.99
A two CD set that definitely lives up to its title – as CD1 features some of Arto Lindsay's best work from the late 90s and early 00s – and CD2 features a very compelling, more recent live set! The studio tracks are filled with all the cool, complex, creative touches we've loved in Lindsay's music over the years – especially that undercurrent of Brazilian music, both classic and modern, which comes into special focus in the performances that features guests Kassin, Vinicius Cantuaria, and Nana Vasconcelos. These "best of" tracks include "Child Prodigy", "Combustivel", "Ondina", "Complicity", "Simply Are", "4 Skies", "Personagem", and "The Prize". The real prize, though, is CD2 – live material mostly recorded solo, in Brooklyn, in 2012 – featuring Lindsay on some mighty noisy guitar, with vocals to match – all at a level that's much more like his early no wave recordings from the late 70s than any of his music from recent decades! The spareness makes the noise even more striking – as Lindsay's vocals have a surprising rasp that's driven by broken, fuzzy guitar lines that often feature inventive avant finger work. These tracks show that the fire in Arto's music has never died at all – and tracks include "Simply Beautiful", "Wall Of Guitar", "Illuminated", "Maneiras", "Pony", and a surprisingly cool take on "Erotic City". Orquestra ImperialFazendo As Pazes Com O Swing ... CD
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2011. New Copy ... $15.99
Maybe the greatest record so far from this ultra-hip Brazilian group – a set that has the range of singers and musicians coming together wonderfully – in a really rich sound that's way more than the sum of its already-great parts! The album features vocals by Moreno Veloso, Nina Becker, Thalma De Freitas, and others – and features lots of hip instrumentation from Kassin, Domenico, Wilson Das Neves, and many others – a list of players large enough to be the orchestra promised in the title – but moving with a groove that's tight enough to match the work of Kassin or Moreno on other records! Many tunes echo older bossa, samba, and MPB elements, yet the style is pretty fresh as well – aware of the past, but not just rehashing it – thanks to a very inventive presentation overall. Titles include "Cair Na Folia", "Fala Chorando", "Moleculas", "Tamancas Do Caterete", "A Saudade E Que Me Consola", "Mocoto Em Tijuana", and "Apaixonado". CD

Orquestra ImperialOrquestra Imperial Ao Vivo ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2013. New Copy ... $9.99
Beautiful live work from this totally great Brazilian collective – a group who's large enough to win the Orquesta in their name, but who work together with a cohesiveness that's more in a small group mode! The vocals alone are totally great – sung in a shifting lineup that includes Nina Becker, Moreno Veloso, Thalma De Freitas, and Rodrigo Amarante – each of whom bring a different flavor to the proceedings, and deepen the rich spirit of the tunes! Instrumentation is relatively traditional – with lots of great acoustic percussion, guitar, and horns – but given that the trio of Veloso, Dominco, and Kassin are a key part of the group, you can bet that the arrangements have plenty of fresh twists and turns as well. Titles include "Obsessao", "Nao Foi Em Vao", "Matematica Do Desejo", "Rue Des Mes Souvenirs", "Gomalina", "Dr Sabe Tudo", and a totally cool cover of the Perry-Kingsley tune "Popcorn"! CD

New Bebel GilbertoTudo ... CD
Portrait, 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bebel Gilberto's really grown a lot over the years – and here, she emerges strongly as a fully-formed artist with a voice that's all her own – and a style that doesn't need to rest on the laurels of her famous family legacy! The album's easily one of the most interesting we've ever heard from Bebel – and it's got this slight spiritual undercurrent that's a real change from just bossa modes – a richer, deeper sound that almost shows echoes of some of the more compelling jazz talents in recent years, yet while still balancing out just the right sort of lovely sound for the vocals! Bass is more pronounced than before – often acoustic, but with a rollingly deep quality – on performances by both Kassin and Liminha – and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson brings in some sweet strings at points, but in a very gentle, subtle way. Seu Jorge joins Bebel on the track "Novas Ideais" – and other titles include "Tout Est Bleu", "Tom De Voz", "Nada Nao", "Somwhere Else", "Lonely In My Heart", "Areia", and "Saudade Vem Correndo". CD

New SonzeiraBrasil Bam Bam Bam ... CD
Talkin' Loud/Harvest, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest records we've heard in years from Gilles Peterson – a wonderful project that brings together classic and contemporary Brazilian talents, and some key London artists as well! The lineup features giants from the sorts of older Brazilian records that Gilles hipped us to many years ago – like percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, and singers Marcos Valle, Elza Soares, and Wilson Das Neves – plus contemporary artists like Kassin on bass (he also co-produced too), and Seu Jorge, Lucas Santtana, or Mart'nalia on vocals – and great British artists like Ski Oakenfull on keyboards, Sean O'Hagan on guitar, and Bembe Segue, Valerie Etienne, and Rob Gallagher on vocals! The list of participants is even bigger than this – and the album was recorded in London, Brighton, and Rio – with arrangements by many of the participants too – all to create this complex criss-crossing of the classic and contemporary, British and Brazilian, all with the kind of 21st Century crackle that only Gilles Peterson could carry off this well. Titles include "Where Nana Hides", "Brasil Pandeiro", "Sambaio", "The Mystery Of Man", "Aquarela Do Brasil", "Estrelar", "Bam Bam Bam", "Um Toque", and "City Of Saints". CD

New Lucas SanttanaSem Nostalgia ... CD
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2009. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Another bold leap forward for Lucas Santtana – a Brazilian artist who really blows our mind with each new release! It's been a few years since we last heard from Lucas, but it's clear he's been doing plenty during the time – coming up with fresh new ideas, working on some English-based lyrics, and continuing to deepen his role as one of the greatest contemporary musicians working in Brazil! Some of the set echoes the dubbier styles of Lucas' last album – but other bits are more acoustic, and show a whole different sonic aspect in his music – one that almost moves towards the Kassin/Domenico camp, but with a quality that's a bit more personal too – possibly because of the English lyrics on about half of the album's tracks. The guitar is often produced with a weird echoey edge – vaguely metallic, yet still surprisingly warm – and Santtana's vocals have really developed a great sense of feeling over the years. Titles include "Who Can Say Which Way", "Super Violao Mashup", "Amor Em Jacuma", "Ca Pra Nos", "I Can't Live Far From My Music", "Hold Me In", "Natureza #1 Em Mi Maior", "Ripple Of The Water", and "Cira Regina E Nana".
