new Pharoah Sanders — Karma ... LP
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold .... $26.99
Quite possibly the best-remembered album from Pharoah Sanders' legendary run at Impulse Records – a set that crossed over big, and sold to countless folks who might not have bought a jazz album this hip otherwise! The record was Sanders' first in the wake of Coltrane's passing – and it's a beautiful extended suite of tracks that flows with a sense of grace, power, and majesty that's simply breathtaking – a new level of expression in spiritual jazz – and virtually the blueprint for an entire generation to come! The album features the classic track "The Creator Has a Master Plan" – spanning a tremendous amount of space and time – and featuring Leon Thomas' classic vocals on the lyrics! Thomas also returns on the cut "Colors", which is a bit more outside, and quite free overall – and other players on the date include Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, James Spaulding on flute, Julius Watkins on French horn, Ron Carter and Richard Davis on bass, and Freddie Waits and Billy Hart on drums.
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear and light water damage near the bottom.)

new KarmaCelebration ... LP
A&M/Horizon, 1976. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Despite the fact that most of these guys participated in some of the best funky fusion records coming out of the 70s west coast scene, this record's not what it should be – especially when you consider it's got players like George Bohannon, Ernie Watts, and Oscar Brashear. Still, it's not a bad bit of pop funky fusion – in sort of a later Crusaders mode – and it does feature some vocals by Syreeta and Denices Williams. Titles include "Suite Syreeta", "Kwanzaa", "Well", and "Funk De Mambo".
(Cover has a promo stamp and some ring & edge wear.)

Charles Lloyd — Charles Lloyd In Europe ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $15.99
Overseas excursions from the Charles Lloyd Quartet – a group who were already breaking down plenty of boundaries at home in the US! The lineup is a bit different than some of the other Lloyd sessions of the time, in that Cecil McBee is in the group on bass – adding in some wonderfully spiritual tones to a lineup that features Charles on tenor and flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – playing with those inventive rhythms that made his work a perfect fit for Lloyd's lines on the tenor! Titles include "Tagore", "Karma", "Little Anahid's Day", "Manhattan Carousel", "European Fantasy", and "Hej Da!".

new Lady (Terri Walker & Nicole Wray) — Lady ... CD
Truth & Soul, 2013. New Copy .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long-overdue return of soulsinger Terri Walker – teamed up here brilliantly with Nicole Wray, and served up in a format that's even better than before! Lady have a style that's totally great – a really old school female duo, presented with strong Truth & South touches that really take us back to late 60s/early 70s indie girl soul – a time when things could be powerful one minute, and fragile the next – especially as the vocals going back and forth really find their own sort of intimate space! Terri's still every bit as great as she was on her contemporary soul albums from the past decade – but this old school approach somehow makes her sound even better than before – and Nicole's a great partner, as is the whole El Michels-ish lineup in the backing group! Titles include "Money", "Hold On", "Karma", "Sweet Lady", "If You Wanna Be My Man", "Waiting On You", "Get Ready", and "Tell The Truth".

new Nicola Conte — Rituals ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2008. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A sublime album through and through – and another essential slice of work from the legendary Nicola Conte! Conte's only given us a few full length sets under his own name, but they've all been amazing, and this album's no exception – a record that mostly features live jazz instrumentation, turned towards some of the groove-heavy modes that Conte forged from his earliest sides on Schema Records – a style that was clubjazz before anyone was using that tag, but which also has done plenty to revive a huge range of classic modes from decades past! The record's got echoes of bossa, modal jazz, and more – served up by combos with players that include Timo Lassy on sax and flute, Fabrizio Bosso and Till Bronner on trumpets, Pietro Lussu on piano, and Conte himself on guitar. Vocals are by Alice Ricciardi, Jose James, Chiara Civello, and Kim Sanders – and the album's got an even deeper feel than Conte's previous album on Blue Note. Tracks include "Karma Flower", "I See All Shades Of You", "Black Is The Graceful Veil", "Caravan", "Rituals", "Macedonia", "The Nubian Queens", and "Like Leaves In The Wind".

new Don Cherry — Hear & Now ... LP
Atlantic, 1977. Used .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Important 70s work from Don Cherry – one of the first albums to bring his overseas experiments to a larger US audience! The set builds nicely off of styles that Don forged earlier in France and Scandinavia – a freer style of music than his work with Ornette Coleman, and a richly organic groove that builds up strongly from the bottom, often with elements of world music settled in alongside the jazz – but there's also some funkier moments here too, a bit like the Brown Rice album, but looser overall! The groups on most numbers are relatively large and spiritual – almost like Alice Coltrane at times, but a bit more electric and funky at others – and players include Collin Walcott on sitar, Michael Brecker on saxes, Cliff Carter on keyboards, Lenny White and Tony Williams on drums, Lois Colin on harp, and Raphael Cruz on percussion. Cherry himself plays conch shells, bells, and flute in addition to his usual trumpet – and he even sings a bit on a few numbers, in a soulful, scatting sort of groove. Narada Michael Walden produced, and the whole set's got a very righteous feel – with tracks that include "Universal Mother", "Buddah's Blues", "Eagle Eye", "Mahakali", "Karmapa Chenno", "Surrender Rose", and "Journey Of Milarepa".
(Cover has some wear & staining along the opening, and partially split seams.)
