JJ Jackson/Linda JonesThis Is Loma Volume 7 (Great JJ Jackson/Hypnotized) ... LP
Loma/Warner (UK), Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $24.99 29.99
A special version of this excellent series – with an album by each artist in the package! Side one features a killer album by the justly described Great JJ Jackson – and one that's been a darn tough one to find over the years! The leadoff cut is JJ's amazing single "But It's Alright", a slammin' soul track that always stops us dead whenever we hear it – which isn't often enough! The rest of the material is excellent too, and there are lots of nice tracks like "I Dig Girls", "Courage Ain't Strength", "Too Late", "Try Me", "Down But Not Out", Sho Nuff (Got A Good Thing Going", and "Four Walls". He's equally adept at uptempo soul and more ballad inflected tunes – great stuff all the way! Side two features Hypnotized by Linda Jones – one of the greatest female singers on the east coast scene at the end of the 60s – heard here on a classic Warner Brothers set that includes some of her best-remembered tracks! At some level, the set's a prequel to Linda's later recordings for the Stang/All Platinum label – as it features production and arrangements by the great George Kerr – who really has a way with slow-moving soul tunes, and the kind of sad-tinged tracks that Jones always did so well! Plus, his raw production really brings out some of the deeper soul qualities in Linda's voice – a mode that's quite a surprise at times, and presented here in a way that's far beyond any of the Aretha Franklin-styled cliches of other singers. Jones is a tremendously unique talent in female soul, and this album's her lasting legacy – a true treasure with cuts that include the hit "Hypnotized", plus loads of other nice ones like "Last Minute Miracle", "Give My Love A Try", "You Can't Take It", "What've I Done", and "I Can't Stand It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 70s issue. Cover has unglued seams and is bent just a bit at the top seam.)

Calla, 1966. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest pop soul singles of all time! Even though we hear it lots of times on oldies stations, we still get a thrill from the great raw sound of "But It's Alright" – especially the great choppy guitar bit on the intro! Plus, this original Calla pressing of the track also features an amazing b-side – the hard storming "Boogaloo Baby", which is an incredible Northern Soul track with a groove that just won't quit! Pounding piano, great crowd sounds on the chorus, and a runaway groove that never stops! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ JJ JacksonJJ Jackson's Dilemma ... LP
Perception, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great little record – and one that's got quite a different groove than JJ Jackson's 60s material! Like a lot of records on the Perception label, this one's a nice messed-up funk record – with a lot of weird influences in the mix, and a cool sound that always feels like it's shaking itself apart! JJ does some singing, plays piano, and leads a group that includes organ, tenor, trumpet, and electric bass – working with a lot less tightness than some of his earlier bands – but in a great way that really opens up his sound for the 70s! Highlights include a weird long funk version of "Let The Sunshine In", plus "Indian Thing", "Help Me Get To My Grits", "Go Find Yourself A Woman", and a goofy cover of "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" Milt Jackson/JJ Johnson/Ray BrownJackson, Johnson, Brown & Company ... LP
Pablo, 1983. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Jackson, Johnson, Brown, and company – and a few more too – a nicely laidback sextet date from the later years of Pablo Records, done in the great mode that always made the label's work a 70s extension of the Verve Records ethos! Key players here, obviously, are Milt Jackson on vibes, JJ Johnson on trombone, and Ray Brown on bass – Brown also produced the set – and the group also features John Collins on guitar, Tom Rainer on piano, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Tracks are shorter and tighter than a jam session mode for three such heavy players – and titles include "Jaybone", "Lament", "Our Delight", "Bag's Groove", "Watch What Happens", and "The Jumpin Blues". ✨✧ JJ Johnson, Joe Simon, Millie JacksonCleopatra Jones – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Spring/Warner, 1973. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
One of the best of the blacksploitation scores of the early 70s – a masterpiece of music that we rate every bit as high as Shaft or Superfly – maybe even higher! The music here is incredible – a surprising funky turn for JJ Johnson, who most folks know for his straighter jazz work – and like Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and others who were surprising the world with their ability to score music for a full film during the early 70s, JJ really knocks it out of the park with this one – coming up with a batch of tunes that are a wonderful mix of sophisticated scoring, creative instrumentation, and some damn funky grooves! The title cut features Joe Simon on vocals, and Millie Jackson sings on the cuts "Love Doctor" and "It Hurts So Good". The rest of the set is instrumental, and other cuts include an instrumental take on "Cleopatra Jones", plus "Go Chase Cleo", "Goin To The Chase", "Wrap Up", and "Airport Fight". ✨✧ Milt JacksonWizard Of The Vibes (GNP) ... LP
GNP, 1954. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Milt Jackson and JJ Johnson – working here together on 1954 session cut in New York – but some of which features contributions from the famous French pianist Henri Renaud! At this point in their career, Jackson and Johnson had a very similar modern swing – and the record makes for a great matching of their talents – a bit like some of the earliest Blue Note work recorded under the leadership of either player. Johnson sits out on a few tracks, and Jackson plays a bit of piano in addition to vibes – on the tracks that don't feature Renaud – and other players include Al Cohn on tenor, Percy Heath on bass, and Charlie Smith on drums. Titles include "Jay Jay's Blues", "If I Had You", "Out Of Nowhere", and "Indiana". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jack McDuffTobacco Road ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A monster record by Brother Jack McDuff, and one of his best-ever – in our humble opinion! At first glance, the album appears to be just a bunch of jazz covers of standards and pop tracks – like "Tobacco Road", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "This Bitter Earth", and "Teardrops From My Eyes" – but Jack's got some help from JJ Jackson on the arrangements, and the outwardly simple tracks are twisted into these amazing grooves that have Jack wailing away in strange choppy funky ways on the organ! The whole album must be heard to be believed, and the version of "Shadow Of Your Smile", which starts with a nice break, is worth the price of the album alone! Plus, the whole thing's packaged in a very groovy cover, too. LP, Vinyl record album
(Red and green label Broadway pressing, in a heavy glossy cover! Cover has a very light stain in one spot on the inside, but looks great on the outside.)

✨✧ Jack McDuffChange Is Gonna Come ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A sweet Atlantic soul groover from Brother Jack McDuff – and a set that has him tightening up his Hammond sound from his earlier years at Prestige Records! The tunes here are short and punched-up – almost instrumental soul numbers in their construction, but still filled with plenty of jazz – thanks to Jack's mad solos on organ, and some killer drums from Joe Dukes and Bernard Purdie! Other players include George Coleman on tenor, Cornell Dupree on guitar, and Buddy Lucas on baritone sax – and arrangements are by JJ Jackson and Jack himself. Titles include "Hotcha", "Down In the Valley", "Same Old Same Old", "No Tears", "What'd I Say", "Gonna Hang Me Up A Sign", and "Minha Saudade". LP, Vinyl record album

Milt JacksonMilt Jackson – Wizard Of The Vibes (10 inch LP) ... LP
Blue Note, Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint- ... $33.99
Wicked early work from Milt Jackson – a record that's got a lot more of an edge than some of his later work with the Modern Jazz Quartet – a near-perfect modernist bop sound that's every bit the best side of Blue Note in the early 50s! The groups here are really great – one a quintet that features Jackson's partners in the MJQ – John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums (who was in the first rendition of the quartet) – the group's also joined by Lou Donaldson on alto sax, who blows with this boppish edge that really deepens the sound! And the other quintet is even better – with Thelonious Monk on piano and Sahib Shihab on alto sax. Milt's vibes ring out in this boldly chromatic way – clearly a sense of discovery in process during the session – and titles include "Bag's Groove", "On The Scene", "Willow Weep For Me", "Criss Cross", "Eronel", "Tahiti", and "What's New". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John Coltrane & Wilbur HardenJazz Way Out ... LP
Savoy, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic early work by John Coltrane – an album that shows that he was already reaching far, even in the 50s! The tracks on the set are quite long – quite speculative work that predates some of the searching experiments that Trane began in the 60s, with a nice undercurrent of spiritualism that's missing from some of his other work of the period. The work's played by a hip sextet co-led with trumpeter Wilbur Harden, and featuring Curtis Fuller on trombone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Art Taylor on drums, and Ali Jackson on bass. Titles include the classic original reading of "Dial Africa", plus the super-extended "Gold Coast", and the nice "Oomba". LP, Vinyl record album
