The grooviest work so far from the Hi-Fly Orchestra – a set that moves even farther past the sublime territory of their debut, into a really classic blend of soul jazz and Latin rhythms – produced to perfection with a wonderfully solid feel! Instrumentation here is all live – a blend of sax, flute, trombone, Fender Rhodes, piano, and plenty of percussion – all handled with a feel that takes us back to some of our favorite territory on Verve Records from the 60s, those wonderful records that blended elements from the Latin underground with some of the harder jazz leanings of the period – a legacy these guys are happy to add to with their wonderful grooves. This series just keeps getting better and better – and this hard-hitting third volume may be the funkiest entry so far! The groove here is nearly all modern deep funk – of the Quantic, Daptone, Truth & Soul, and Tramp Records variety – served up with just a bit of the modder touches that used to grace Record Kicks in years back, but which have now mostly been replaced by grittier tunes that are very much in the best tradition of the JBs or The Meters! The cuts here are all current, but the production, instrumentation, and tight funky arrangements all make them sound like lost singles from the end of the 60s – plenty hard and heavy to please even the fussiest fan of the classics – with 12 gems that include "Ratpack" by Big Daddy Moochin, "Tired Feet" by Smoove, "Transcend Me" by The Bamboos with Alice Russell, "Pushin On" by Quantic Soul Orchestra with Alice Russell, "Move Move Move" by The Link Quartet, "La Valla" by Bronx River Parkway, "Aynotchesh Yerefu" by Budos Band, "Practice What You Preach" by Poets Of Rhythm, "Do It Right" by Sweet Vandals, "Take My Time" by Breakestra with Choklate, "Hi Fidelity" by Hi Fly Orchestra, an d"Who Told You" by The Soul Snatchers.

Contemporary grooves, but all pretty darn funky – thanks to an excellent track selection by Tobias Kirmayer – the same guy who brought us the excellents Movements collections! A few of the titles here are of older vintage, but most are pulled from the same deep funk underground that Kirmayer services with his Tramp Records label – groups steeped in the styles of the 60s and 70s underground, but who serve up new work that's filled with plenty of funky roots! Despite the wide range of styles promised in the title, most of the titles here are on the grittier side of the spectrum – which is a good thing for us – and even the few tracks that are a bit more programmed still work with plenty of soulful and jazzy elements to keep things real throughout. Titles include "Nothin But A Party" by The Blenders, "Get Clean" by The Nitesounds, "Skins Funk" by Skin Williams & His Dominoes, "Bubbles" by The Boogoos, "Violet" by Hi-Fly Orchestra, "Rhythmo" by Dusty, "Get High" by Dr Sonnenschein, "Barbados Stew" by Caldonia, "First Time Around" by Sagaflex & Rudy Tee, and "Trip To Afrika" by Baccarola.

Things are getting slightly more complicated for the Bee Gees here – but we mean that in a good way! The vocals are superb – soaring forth with this unique sort of majesty, and light years away from their 70s disco pop styles – and the backings are a strange mix of rootsy and orchestral – making for a very odd juxtaposition that really seems to push the whole thing forward brilliantly! There's nobody else like the Bee Gees at this point in their career – a possible acquired taste, but one that's got you hooked once you get it! Titles include "When The Swallows Fly", "In The Summer Of His Years", "Indian Gin And Whiskey Dry", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "Kilburn Towers", and "I Started A Joke".

Majestic Motown from the 70s – an almost-overlooked record, but a surprisingly sophisticated gem that's well worth discovering again! The album's definitely soul at the core, but embraces so many other rich styles too – and at points, almost feels like some of the most ambitious material of the Cadet/Concept scene in Chicago – especially given the full orchestrations on the tracks, handled by Jimmy Haskell and Jerry Long! Leonard Caston's the real genius behind the record, though – and works here to provide great support for co-vocalist Carolyn Majors – who trades leads back and forth with him, and is sometimes showcased on tracks that really let her heavenly vocals take off! The whole thing's great – and titles include an early version of the cut "I'll Keep A Light In My Window", which was later recorded by other groups – plus "Child Of Love", "There's Fear", "Satisfied Mind", "Let There Be Love", "No One Will Know", and "Say You Love Me True". CD features loads of bonus tracks too – 9 more numbers that act as a great second chapter to the album – titles that include "Mother's Son", "What About The Price", "If I Can", "We're Together", "I've Got To Fly", "Don't Let", and "I'm Flying Your Sky".

Prime symphonic disco from the mighty John Davis and his well-named Monster Orchestra! The set's got a dramatic flourish that still mixes in plenty of live instrumentation – including keyboards and flute from John, plus some nice congas from Larry Washington! John sings lead vocals on most cuts, but uses some cool processing to kind of space out the sound – making for a compressed and flanged-out sound that's poppy, but really compelling. And although the whole thing sounds hokey, the quality of the grooves is actually pretty great from an instrumental standpoint. Titles include "Once Upon A Time", "We Can Fly", "Up Jumped The Devil", "You Gotta Give It Up", "You're The One", "The Magic Is You", and "Recapitulation".

One of Duke's most popular albums of the 50s – but we won't hold that against him! The session's one of a number of 50s outings that revisit older classics with the new level of quality offered in the studio – and it's got a similar feel to some of Duke's work for Bethlehem around the same time, which was also done by producer Gus Wildi – tight, but never too facile – and a perfect demonstration of the great balance the Ellington orchestra had at the time. The group includes key players Ray Nance, Cat Anderson, Clark Terry, Juan Tizol, Harry Carney, Paul Gonsalves, and Jimmy Hamilton – and titles include "Black & Tan Fantasy", "Rockin In Rhythm", "Flying Home", "Happy Go Lucky Local", and "In The Mood".

An overlooked gem from the late 70s disco years – a unique side project of the Canadian team who gave the world the THP Orchestra, but one that's done with a bit more Euro style overall! The grooves are full and sweeping right from the start – not as cold as the sounds coming from some of the German studios, but with a similar use of vocals tied up inside the strings – a quality that has the singer equally placed with the instrumentation in the mix, and not as much as a standout soloist. These strings are arranged to perfection by the legendary Jimmie Haskell – who really changes up his mode here, and works great with the groove. The set's got a killer clubby remake of "California Dreamin" – done with female lead vocals and a disco pace that's somehow more chilling than the original. Other titles include "Still I'm Sad", "The Grand Tour", "Flight To Versailles", and the great jazzy groover "Late November".

A really great little album on the short-lived, Bob Thiele-run Contact label – an early 60s set that collects rare early work by Shelly Manne from 1944! The set features a series of New York recordings with Shelly – 4 tracks with the Barney Bigard Trio with Eddie Heywood on piano; 4 more with the Eddie Heywood Orchestra with Don Byas; and 4 more with the Eddie Heywood trio. The sound is quite different than Manne's more famous LA sides of the 50s – but hearing him with Heywood's unique phrasing, we can hear where he got a lot of his ideas! Titles include "Sarcastic Lady", "Step Steps Up", "Step Steps Down", "Night & Day", "Them There Eyes", and "Moonglow".

A sweet groover from the Italian scene of the 70s – music that's got a lush feel, but a funky one too – a great mix of strings and electric instrumentation that rivals the best cop/crime work of the time – yet also has a nice sexy feel too! There's almost a blacksploitation vibe to the record at times – and although some instruments solo at points, the real groove lies in the tight vamping of the orchestra – which hits all the right notes to really send the whole thing soaring – often with a nice use of tone and color too! Titles include "Flying High", "Fearing Much", "Going Home", "Running Fast", "Walking In The Dark", and "Feeling Tense".

One of Sinatra's greatest records ever – pure genius all the way through! Frank's backed here by the orchestra of Count Basie, with some incredible arrangements by Quincy Jones that really have a jazzy, syncopated kick to them. The move seems to be an unintentional way of covering for Frank's slightly failing pipes – but it also picks up on a seminal beat change in 60s pop, the same sort of gentle snapping groove that you'd find in the best work by Bacharach, a shift that really infuses Frank's vocals with a whole new sound, one that shows that he's ready to keep on growing and growing after being stuck in a Nelson Riddle rut. All tracks are superb – hip 60s pop and showtunes, like "I Believe In You", "Fly Me To the Moon", "More", "The Good Life", "Wives & Lovers", and "I Wanna Be Around".

A really cool compilation of late 50s outer space obsessive pop, rockabilly boogie, and groovy space age jazz numbers – wild numbers from the decade before we set down on the moon! The numbers are mostly from the end of the 50s – age of black & white flying saucer attack movies and cold war hysteria – and it's filled with seedy and spacey little numbers that clearly influenced a generation of cheeky rockers to come. The title and cover really fit the spirit of the music here – as most of the tracks are upbeat and sky-flying – the sorts of numbers that go way beyond the sleepier side of easy listening, and really show the way that Easy maestros of the 70s were picking up plenty of funky elements in their music! There's no hard funk tracks here – as you might find on other sound library sets – but there's definitely an undercurrent of groove, thanks to some well-chosen rhythms, strong use of electric bass, and an overall sense of flow in most of the orchestrations – a feel that reminds us a lot of some of the excellent Brigade Mondaine compilations from a few years back. A great combination of Eastern European jazz talents of the 60s – the vibes of Jerzy Milian and the bigger band of Gustav Brom – both coming together here in a very unique recording! Milian's vibes are not only some of the best of his scene at the time – but some of the best of the world, as well – as rich in tone as Milt Jackson, but with sharper edges you'd hear from Bobby Hutcherson, and some of the new conceptions of phrasing that Gary Burton was starting to present – all aspects that ring out beautifully here right from the very first note! Brom's orchestra is mighty groovy – sometimes hitting with a soulful sock that recalls the best MPS/Saba work of the period – other times letting Jerzy fly a bit more free with elements that are much more modern. The set features a few live tracks, mixed with studio material – and titles include "Blues For Praha", "What Kind Of Fool Am I", "Out Of Nowhere", "Picnic", "Blues For Gustav", and "Well You Needn't".

The great Arthur Verocai and his orchestra – the already legendary performance for the Timeless series presented by Mochilla! It's all the songs from from Verocai's amazing self-titled album from 1972. Arthur Verocai composed the material, and arranges and conducts the orchestra with some legendary guests such as Ivan Conti, Airto Moreira, Jose Bertrami and others – bringing the album to live before a packed audience as brilliantly as one could have hoped! Titles include "Karina", "Sylvia", "Dedicada A Ela", "Sucuri", "Flying To LA", "Na Boca Do Sol" and more – and the CD & DVD edition includes the audio and video of the performance! DVD was shot in black & white, and hour + performance, slideshows and special features.

Bobby's first two albums on one CD – like a dream come true to our ears! Both records are incredible stuff – with Bobby hitting hard on every level! The vocals are incredible – fresh, and raw, and with that warm little rasp that made him stand out so strongly from other singers of the late 60s. Rare work from 50s vocalist Beverly Kenney – a selection of material that stands nicely alongside her commercially-released albums of the time! Kenney first burst on the scene with a flourish, then recorded only briefly before her all-too-soon death in 1960 – so the unreleased gems here really do a lot towards filling in her small catalog of music – and offer up some surprising slices of work pulled from TV and radio performances in 1954 and 1958. Backing is by a group with Roland Hanna on piano and Vinnie Burke on bass on some tracks – and by The Skitch Henderson Orchestra on others – and titles include the Kenney originals "I Hate Rock & Roll" and "I Don't Believe In Love" – the latter of which is sung by Diane Hubka, in a recent performance added to this package. Other vintage songs include "The More I See You", "Swing & Sway", "Charleston Fling", "I'm Ready For The Show", "Tappin Out A Merry Beat", and "What Is There To Say" – plus a short interview with Beverly.

Although Gato's probably best known for his late 60s appearances on the American scene, and his 70s dates for Impulse and Flying Dutchman – his earlier work in Italy is all pretty darn great, and this set shows the budding modernist to be in very strong company with a lineup that includes Enrico Rava on trumpet and Franco D'Andrea on piano, plus bass and drums. Side one of the record features full orchestrations by Umiliani – still plenty jazzy, with some great horn passages and cool use of vibes. Then side two features Umiliani's music played by the small group with Gato in the lead – a really great mix of modes that make the soundtrack a real standout, both in the Italian jazz and film scenes of the 60s. Titles include "Jazz Alla Vivaldi", "Ballata Della Bassa Padana", "Brass Fugato", "Una Bella Grinta", "Lontananza", "Sequenze Autostrata", "Free Theme", and "Hammond Blues"

The first album in a legendary run of vocal jazz classics on Atlantic Records – and a set that really helped Chris Connor move to a new level of expression in her music! The sound here is much richer than Connor's previous recordings for Bethlehem – and the small combo jazz backings have been replaced by fuller orchestrations by Ralph Burns – done in a cool, edgey sort of way that really pushes Chris into newly sophisticated territory! The sound's on a par with the best June Christy/Pete Rugolo collaborations on Capitol – and the group's filled with some great jazz players, including Zoot Sims, John Lewis, Milt Hinton, and Oscar Pettiford. Titles include "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "My April Heart", "He Was Good to Me", "Where Are You", and "Get Out Of Town". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Circus" and "Flying Home".

Great jazzy grooves from the Quiet Nights Orchestra – the second set from the group, and every bit as wonderful as the first! There's wicked blend of modes going on here – a bit of modal jazz, some clubjazz rhythms, a touch of Schema groove, and also just a hint of older jazz modes too – all wrapped together with a youthful, vibrant energy that really makes the whole thing sparkle! If you've ever dug work on labels like Ricky Tick, Schema, or some of the best older Compost material, you'll find plenty here to love – and it's great to know that there's folks like Quiet Nights out there, still putting out grooves like this. Sofie Norling sings these beautiful vocals on a few tracks, but overall most of the set is instrumental – with a nice mix of trumpet, trombone, saxes, and even some vibes. Titles include "Waves", "When We Fly", "Movin", "The Path", "Dreaming", "One More Try", "He Is My Music", and "Falling For You".

The collection not only shows the group's roots and inspiration in the work of a number of different artists – but also features an exclusive track as well – a great cover of "Talking About Freedom", done by Cinematic Orchestra just for this set! Patrick Adams picks the best of P&P Records – and the man definitely knows what he's doing – given that he was one of the "P's" in the label's name! The tunes here are heavy on those cool spaced-out grooves that Adams did so well – that wonderfully hip, and very underground style he used after an initial few years in more mainstream soul – the trademark imprint of P&P, and the reason why the label's tunes have gone onto influence so many others over the years! The grooves are all sublime – from quick-stepping moogy numbers, to mellower tracks that stretch out in this great sort of gentle funk – all tied together with a united production aesthetic and lots of shared sympathies between the artists.
