✨✧ Herbie MannBird In A Silver Cage ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Sweet funky 70s work from Herbie Mann – one of his best records of the time, and a set that's got a stretched-out and slightly cosmic feel! The album's clearly the brainchild of writer/arranger/producer Sylvester Levay – who also plays keyboards on the session, and creates a groove that's not that dissimilar from some of the Dave Matthews work on Kudu or CTI – despite the fact that Levay was best known for his work with Silver Convention! The overall sound is slick, but still has plenty of room for solo work – and there's some uptempo numbers that groove out, but without as much of the cheesy disco touches as some of Mann's other records. Titles include "Aria", "Bird In A Silver Cage", "The Piper", and "Birdwalk". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light ring wear. Labels have marker.)

Herbie MannDo The Bossa Nova With Herbie Mann ... LP
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A great album of bossa groovers, recorded by Herbie in the early days of the US bossa boom – and with a sound that's right on the money! The backing's very lively, and the tracks have a tight bossa sound that's quite authentic. Herbie's flute is livelier than usual, and on a set like this, you can hear why it's no wonder that he's been so respected by Latin and Brazilian players over the years. Titles include "Voce E Eu", "Bossa Velha", "Blues Walk", "One Note Samba", "Amor Em Paz", and "Deve Ser Amor". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue & green label stereo pressing. Cover has bent corners and some fraying at the bottom of the spine.)

Herbie MannFlute, Brass, Vibes, & Percussion ... LP
Verve, Early 60s. Sealed ... $11.99
Excellent Verve work from Herbie – a sweet little set with a nice Latin undercurrent! The style here is similar to that of Herbie's Flautista album – and has some larger arrangements from a nonet set the backdrop for some evocative flute solos from Mann. The instrumentation is very much in the spirit of the title – with some strong use of vibes by Johny Rae, plus conga from Ray Mantilla, bongos from Ray Barretto, and snakey bass work from Nabil Totah! Includes the great track "Ritual", arranged by AK Salim – plus "Dearly Beloved", "I'll Remember April", "Autumn Leaves", and "Fife N Tambourine Corps". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent EU reissue on Life Goes On, still sealed.)

Herbie MannHi Flutin (aka Flute Fraternity) ... LP
Mode/Premier, 1957. Very Good+ ... $8.99
An excellent little album from the team of Herbie Mann & Buddy Collette – one that has both players using a wide range of reed instruments, and not just flute! Herbie and Buddy are wonderfully paired here – in a way that expands past the usual flute jazz mode by adding in bits of tenor sax, alto, and clarinet – as well as a range of different flutes too – not in a mode that's gimmicky, but which complements the lighter sound of the flute with some heavier notes on tenor at just the right moment – in a style that reminds us of some of Jerome Richardson's best records of the time. Rhythm is by the trio of Mel Lewis on drums, Buddy Clark on bass, and Jimmy Rowles on both piano and a bit of celeste – and tracks are long, with a freshly spontaneous feel that's really great! Titles include "Morning After", "Here's Pete", "Theme From Theme From", "Give A Little Whistle", "Herbie's Buddy", and "Pop Melody". This is a 2nd pressing of the Mode album Flute Fraternity – without Buddy Collette as the co-leader on the cover, and with his name listed in the notes as Bobby Collette! LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 60s red label stereo Premier pressing. Cover has light wear and aging, bumped corners, and minor blemishes.)

Herbie MannLive At The Whiskey 1969 – Unreleased Masters ... CD
Atlantic/Real Gone, 1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... $26.99 29.98
Never-heard music from one of the hippest groups ever led by flute man Herbie Mann – a killer lineup that includes Roy Ayers on vibes, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, and Steve Marcus on tenor! The tracks here are all previously unreleased – pulled from the same recordings that gave the world the Live At The Whiskey A Go Go album, but much more far-reaching overall – in a way that not only shows the full range of sounds the group could produce, but which also really brings out some individual moments of genius from each player! Roy's vibes are wonderful – with some very bold chromes, but his usual sense of warmth, too – which can make for a striking comparison with the edges in Sharrock's guitar and the soulfulness of Marcus' tenor. Linda Sharrock sings a bit on the record, but most of the album features long, extended jams from a group that also includes Miroslav Vitous on bass and Bruno Carr on drums – on titles that include "Untitled Jam", "Black Woman", "All Blues", "Portait Of Linda In Three Colors All Black", "Chain Of Fools", "Tangier/If I Were A Carpenter", "Scarborough Fair", "Philly Dog", and "Comin Home Baby/Battle Hymn Of The Republic". Herbie MannLondon Underground ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Herbie Mann rides his Memphis Underground approach over to London – where he grooves nicely in a similar jazz funk take on that scene's biggest tunes of the time! The set was recorded in the UK, and features hip help from an assortment of rockers – including Mick Taylor and Albert Lee on guitars, Ian MacDonald on alto sax, and Aynsley Dunbar on drums – plus Herbie's frequent partner Pat Rebillot on keyboards. The sound is surprisingly laidback at times – warmly soulful, and a lot less rockish than you might guess for an album with two guitarists in the mix – and titles include "Bitch", "Spin Ball", "Mellow Yellow", "Paper Sun", "Layla", and Herbie's original "Memphis Spoon Bread & Dover Sole" – plus a great Fender Rhodes-heavy take on "You Never Give Me Your Money". Herbie MannReggae/Reggae II ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
Two unusual Herbie Mann albums – back to back in a single set! The first Reggae album has a surprisingly strong mix of 70s modes – as the funky flute of Herbie Mann takes on some of the nascent reggae grooves of the time – with results that are a lot nicer than you might expect! There's some core rhythms on the record from Tommy McCook, but Herbie's regular keyboardist Pat Rebillot also adds in some surprisingly nice lines too – making the whole thing way more than just another session cut down in Kingston. One real surprise is a very extended take on "My Girl", which runs for over 18 minutes and takes up all of side two – and other cuts include "Rivers Of Babylon", "Swinging Shepherd Blues", and "Ob La Di". Reggae II is a lesser-known follow-up to Herbie Mann's first album of reggae-styled instrumental grooves – and one that's every bit as sweet as the first! Like that record, the approach here is one that has Mann working with Kingston-bred rhythms from a lineup that includes Winston Wright on organ, Jackie Jackson bass, and Michael Richard on drums – mixed with tenor from Tommy McCook and trumpet from Bobby Ellis – then given a slight fusion vibe from Mann's frequent 70s musical partner Pat Rebillot on a variety of keyboards! Herbie's flute snakes into the groove in this warm, easygoing way – very open in tone, and a surprisingly good fit for an instrument that isn't often used in such a setting. Titles include "Down On The Corner", "Cecilia", "I Know", "Stoned By You", "Bend Down Low", and "So Get It While You Can". CD

✨✧ Herbie MannWaterbed ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A sweet electric set from the great Herbie Mann – one of his best of the time! Like a number of his contemporaries recording jazz for Atlantic, Herbie had moved pretty firmly into a funky soul mode by the mid 70s – adding in lots of electric instrumentation and vocals to keep up with the success of some of the bigger-selling jazz albums of the time. Oddly, this approach actually sounds pretty darn good to us – especially having the hindsight of over 25 years to get over the shock of any sort of perceived "sell out". The players are all pretty tight, and Herbie manages to keep things pretty hip on all tracks, sticking to his roots in Latin-influenced playing. The record features remakes of "Comin Home Baby" and Joe Cuba's "Bang Bang", plus a version of Astor Piazzolla's "Deux Xango", and the orignals "Paradise Music", "Body Oil", and "Waterbed". Atlantic, 1966. Used ... $9.99
Although Herbie and Joao are listed together in the artist credits together for the record, they don't really play together on the record – as did Joao and Stan Getz on their album together. Instead, they trade off tracks of bossa nova material, recorded with Jobim in Rio – Joao's by EMI/Odeon, Herbie's by Atlantic. The set includes a host of great light breezy bossa stuff – like "Amor Em Paz", "O Barquinho", "Bim Bom", "Bolinha De Papel", and "Deve Ser Amor". Not totally over the top, but a very nice batch of breezy bossa tracks with lots of light flute and guitar lines floating around! CD

Herbie Mann & Joao GilbertoHerbie Mann & Joao Gilberto With Antonio Carlos Jobim ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A great little record, and one that might be thought of best as a "Herbie Mann Plus" record – rather than a duet between the artists on the cover! Half the set features the American release of some great Joao Gilberto material from the early years in Brazil, with arrangements from Antonio Carlos Jobim – and the other half features excellent alto and flute solos from Mann, set to some sweet bossa backings by Jobim – with some additional guitar from a young Baden Powell! Given the Jobim arrangements on both sets of material, there's a great unified feel to the whole thing – and Herbie cuts include "Amor Em Paz", "Insensatez", "Consolacao", "Deve Ser Amor", and "One Note Samba" – which has a vocal by Jobim. Gilberto cuts include "Rosa Morena", "Samba Da Minha Terra", "Bim Bom", and "Desafinado". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Herbie MannFlamingo – Herbie Mann Quartet Volume 2 ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early showcase for the cool, compressed flute work of the young Herbie Mann – a style that created a great bridge to jazz for so many later players on the instrument! The Mann heard here isn't the overblown, soul-drenched Herbie of the 60s – but a player who's very careful with his tone and timing, yet still able to swing incredibly well! Herbie's solos are a masterpiece of economy – and set up strongly in a hip quartet that features some equally careful work from Joe Puma on guitar – plus Charles Andrus on bass and Harold Granowsky on drums. There's a number of strong original tunes on the set – numbers written with a bit of wit and angular finish – and titles include "Jasmin", "Woodchuck", "One Way Love", "Sorimao", "The Influential Mr Cohn", and "Beverly". Herbie Mann's at the Village Gate – really wailing away in a set of extended numbers that not only set a whole new standard for live recording in jazz, but which also pushed forward the role of the flute in the music as well! There's a heck of a lot of soul in the grooves here – served up by a totally cooking rhythm section that includes basses from Ben Tucker and Ahmed Abdul-Malik, percussion from Chief Bey and Ray Mantilla, and drums from Rudy Collins – plus some especially great work on vibes from Haygood Hardy, sounding beautifully chromatic underneath Herbie's sharp-edged work on flute! The set features a key reading of "Comin Home Baby" that runs for over 8 minutes long – plus great long versions of "Summertime" and "It Ain't Necessarily So". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1963. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest 60s live albums from Herbie Mann – done in a style that's a bit different from the rest! Herbie cut many successful live albums for Atlantic, most of them with a hard wailing soul jazz groove – but this one's a nice batch of mellower bossa tunes, played at the Newport festival in Herbie's early love affair with the music, by a group that includes Dave Pike on vibes and Atilla Zoller on guitar. All tracks are long, and the groove is much more open-handed than on Herbie's studio bossa albums. Titles include "Garota De Ipanema", "Desafinado", "Samba De Orfeu", and the more soul jazz oriented tune "Don't You Know", written by bassist Ben Tucker. LP, Vinyl record album

One of Herbie Mann's biggest albums – and one of his funkiest too! The cover's a bit of an off-putter – although it probably helped sell the record, back in the day – but the grooves are as rock-solid as anything that Herbie cut at the time – tight, focused, and a perfect showcase for his soulful work on flute! Tracks have a groove that's somewhat relaxed – almost a shift from the soul jazz vibe of Mann's earlier Atlantic work into some of the freer modes that were showing up in the CTI generation – and the players on the date include both Duane Allman and Cornell Dupree on guitars, Richard Tee on keyboards, Chuck Rainey on bass, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, and Bernard Purdie on drums – a player whose work here is definitely a key part of the sound! All tracks are long and slinky funky – and titles include "Push Push", "Spirit In The Dark", "What's Going On", "What'd I Say", and "Never Can Say Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album

A sweet set of tracks that goes way beyond the usual Herbie Mann album! Herbie's playing with Bill Evans' trio that included Chuck Israels on bass and Paul Motian on drums – and the group's got a nice groove that, while not exactly modal, still hits a nice open-ended stretch that works well with Mann's flute – and creates some great exotic-tinged sounds! In a way, the whole album sounds a bit like some sort of 70's soul jazz flute album – nice and airy, a little bit righteous, and very different for both Evans and Mann – and tracks include "Nirvana", "Cashmere", "Gymnopedie", and "I Love You". Stone cooking hardbop – done with all the sharp edges of a New York session, even though the material was recorded live in Rio! The setting is an unusual one – a State Department tour of American jazz musicians – but a lineup that moves way past some of the overly-mainstream "ambassadors" out there – given that the players include Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Zoot Sims and Al Cohn on tenors, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Herbie Mann on flute, and even Ahmed Abdul-Malik on oud! Tracks are nice and long – very much in a jam session mode on the best numbers, but mixed with some well-played mellower moments too – and titles include "Wee Dot", "Red Door", "Autumn Leaves", and the haunting original "Ismaaa", which has a great Eastern feel, thanks to the oud! Stone flute, or stoned flute, the album's got a really laidback feel – a sound that's very open-ended, and quite different from some of the crossover classics Herbie Mann was cutting a few short years before! The record's got the darkly brooding feel of some of his other work on the Vortex label – and features a subtle blend of softly-blown flute with guitar from Sonny Sharrock, vibes from Roy Ayers, and bass from either Miroslav Vitous or Ron Carter. There's some light added strings on most tracks, but they're arranged by William S Fischer – in ways that make them more sly sense of darkness in the background than standard sleepy accompaniment. Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really unique collaboration between fluteman Herbie Mann and soul singer Tamiko Jones – a vocalist who's always a really special talent, and who has an equally great ear for jazz as well! That style works perfectly here – as the vibe is somewhere between Herbie's Latin and Brazilian-styled sets for Atlantic, and some of the groovier jazz of the 60s – particularly the styles influenced by hip soundtracks of the time. Arrangements are very fresh, and even make familiar tunes pop nicely – thanks to work on the charts from Joe Zawinul, Melba Liston, and Jimmy Wisner. But the really special talent here is Tamiko – who sometimes sings lyrics, sometimes works wordlessly in a really cool mode – on titles that include "A Man & A Woman", "O Barquinho", "It's Time That You Settled Down", "Sidewinder", "Day Tripper", "Sunny", and "How Insensitive". A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! The group's billed as the Afro-Jazz Sextet– but has a strong Latin vibe as well – a bit of an echo of the experiments Herbie Mann did with Latin jazz previously on labels like Verve and United Artists – but given a bit more of the Atlantic-era punch here as well! The group features some wonderful vibes from John Rae – whose tones ring out beautifully on some of the best numbers – plus a mix of Latin and African-styled percussion from Ray Barretto, Olatunjii, and Ray Mantilla – who really make the record cook. A few tunes feature an added trumpet group, and the rest are mostly just flute and percussion – on titles that include "St Thomas", "Walkin", "Uhuru", "High Life", and "Sawa Sawa De". Fuel 2000, Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great set of tracks – even if it is a discographer's nightmare! 12 tracks on the album are from a session originally done under the name of Machito – and features Herbie as the main soloist, over a set of wonderfully lush Latin jazz backings! The feel is nicely exotic – right up there with Herbie's best work of this nature, and done with a heavy groove, thanks to Machito's touch – sounding very similar to his legendary Kenya album. The remaining 8 tracks on the set are pulled from a late 50s session for the tiny Mode label – a tasty bit of west coast jazz that has a very different feel than the Machito material, but which is equally nice! Herbie plays piccolo and tenor in addition to flute – working with a small group that includes Jimmy Rowles, Mel Lewis, and Buddy Colette. Bossa nova from Herbie Mann – one of our favorite albums ever from the famous flute player – cut for United Artists, and a one-off session that's arguably better than most of his Atlantic work of the time! There's a groove here that's undeniable – a sense of swing that grabs us right from the get-go, and makes us totally love each new track before Mann's flute even comes into the mix! These grooves come from some great interplay between Dave Pike on marimbas, Haygood Hardy on vibes, Billy Bean on guitar, and a host of hip percussionists who include Willie Bobo, Carmen Costa, and Carlos Patato Valdez! Tracks are long, with a Joao Donato-like sense of space – similar to Pike's excellent bossa work for Prestige around the same time – which makes a perfect settion for Herbie's soulful flute. ✨✧ Herbie MannGreat Ideas Of Western Mann (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Riverside/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful album by Herbie Mann – and one of the few to feature him exclusively on bass clarinet! Bass clarinet is one of the hippest of instruments – mastered only by a few strong solo players in jazz, like Eric Dolphy or David Murray – and Herbie shows here that he was way more than a pop jazz player back in the 50s, as he uses the tone of the deep rich instrument to weave magical lines of color and sound. He's working here with a hip small LA combo that includes Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, and Mel Lewis on drums – and the tracks are long and snaking, way more interesting than you'd expect! Titles include "The Theme", "A Handful Of Stars", "Lady Bird", and "A Stella Performance". Plus, the CD also features the 13 minute bonus track, "Blues For Tomorrow", not on the original LP! The collection also features 4 tracks from a rare Verve session – The Magic Flute Of Herbie Mann – hardly the sort of operatic fare you might guess from the title, and instead one of Herbie's most enigmatic albums of the time, thanks to a nicely dark-edged quality to the sound! Herbie's flute is crisp and clean, but also extremely soulful – and backing is by a trio with Jimmy Rowles on piano, Buddy Clark on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums – all playing with moodier tones than you might expect from some of their other work of the time. Titles include "Let's Dance", "Tenderly", "Strike Up The Band", and "St Louis Blues". CD

A sweet soulful set from Herbie Mann – one that has the jazz flautist taking on the 60s sound of Memphis! This album was such a big hit for Herbie that it's easy to forget the sheer raw power of the group – a mighty quartet that included Roy Ayers on vibes, and both Sonny Sharrock and Larry Coryell on guitars – jamming with a hard but ragged edge, and getting some tighter backing here by a hip Memphis soul rhythm section! The groove is great, with a heavier, funkier approach than Herbie was using on previous albums – and the tunes are all nice and long, with plenty of room for really great instrumental interplay! ✨✧ Herbie Mann & The Bill Evans TrioNirvana ... CD
Atlantic (UK), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Johnny Rae's Afro Jazz SeptetHerbie Mann's African Suite ... LP
United Artists, 1962. Sealed ... $9.99
A confusing title, but a wonderful little record! The album's as much a Herbie Mann Latin session as it is a record by Johnny Rae – which is probably why the album's titled as such – and the group on the set features Rae on vibes, Herbie on flute, Jack Six on bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums, Bobby Corwin on piano, and Jose Mangual, Patato Valdes, and Victor Pantoja on an assortment of Latin and African percussion. The groove is tremendous – Latinized jazz, but with a real tension between the heavy percussion on the bottom and the ligher flute and vibes on the top – especially on the album's more tribal, African-styled numbers. The "suite" features 7 tracks in all – 5 composed by Herbie ("Sorimao", "Beouin", "Sudan", "Ekunda", "Guinean"), plus a version of Sonny Rollins' "St Thomas", and the track "Jungle Fantasy" by Noro Morales. Roy AyersStoned Soul Picnic ... LP
Atlantic/Nature Sounds, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
An early album as a leader from the great Roy Ayers – a set that captures the vibes man at a time when he'd been working on the west coast soul jazz scene, and was stepping into even greater fame in the group of Herbie Mann! Yet this set is definitely Roy's own – kind of an introduction to the more righteous sounds he'd pursue in the 70s, set up in an instrumental mode with great help from Herbie Hancock on piano, Gary Bartz on alto, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, and Hubert Laws on flute – all ultra-hip players who really bring a lot to the record! And despite the colorful cover, and its reference of a pop hit, there's a much deeper vibe going on here – on titles that include a great version of Jobim's "Wave" – done like we've never heard it before – plus the original cuts "What The People Say", "Lil's Paradise", and "A Rose For Cindy". Titles are mostly familiar, but wonderfully transformed into Connor's own personal statements – and tracks include "Ridin High", "It's All Right With Me", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "All Dressed Up With A Broken Heart", "All This & Heaven Too", "Trouble Is a Man", "Blame It On My Youth", and "The Thrill Is Gone". Reprise, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $11.99
Beautiful early work from Jethro Tull – a formative set that really has the group deepening both their themes and their music! There's still a bit of blues rock at the core – but also some richer, more lyrical modes too – and Ian Anderson does a perfect job of bridging both worlds with his sublime work on flute – an instrument that must have seemed like an odd lead for a rock group at the time, but which is no surprise in the same generation that artists like Herbie Mann and Roland Kirk were making their own hip records – not to mention the great Harold McNair, who was a UK contemporary of Andreson. The whole thing's great – a record that's ripe for rediscovery, and which really gives back year after year – and titles include "A New Day Yesterday", "Back To The Family", "Fat Man", "Reasons For Waiting", "Nothing Is Easy", and the classic instrumental "Bouree". Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good- ... $9.99
Flute man Moe Koffman was one of the strongest jazz talents on his instrument in the late 50s – an artist whose work on records like this may well have paved the ground for the success of Herbie Mann and others to come! The title's a play on Moe's earlier work on the "Swingin Shepherd" tune – a surprise instrumental hit, with a very sprightly groove – but the approach here is much more jazz overall, and really lets Koffman show off his chops – including a few points at which he blows alto sax too! The arrangements are fresh, and slightly modern – and the group features Ed Bickert on guitar, Hugh Currie on bass, and Ron Rully on drums – on titles that include "Marty's Mourge", "What Can You Do", "Doxy", "Sure It Is", "Alone Together", and "Cloud Nine". Vortex/Nature Sounds, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... On April 20, 2024
Groovily tripped-out work from vibist Dave Pike – and one of the few American albums that matches the experimental sound of his work for MPS! The session's often quite free and open – in a way that not only uses odd instrumental combinations and arrangements, but which also features some offbeat production by Herbie Mann that further abstracts the sound! Elements of Pike's earlier work shine through in a few of the more straightforward groovers, but his new European-endowed sense of hipness wins in the end – thanks to a good deal of modal grooves, psychedelic elements, and even a bit of fuzzy Fender bass! Other players include Lee Konitz on alto sax, Don Friedman on piano, Chuck Israel on bass (electric and acoustic), and Eddie Daniels on tenor and clarinet – and titles include "Free Improvisation", "The Drifter", "Ballad", "The Doors Of Perception", and "Anticipation". Sdban (Netherlands), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A much-needed look at the Dutch jazz scene in the 50s and 60s – a spot in Europe that was turning out some really fantastic modern material – at a level that's every bit as great as better-known work coming from France, Germany, and Scandinavia at the time! Many of the players here quickly became giants who would dominate on the Dutch scene for years to come – and even at this early point, their work is wonderful – occasionally graced with guest work from American players, but already more than great enough on its own – and filled with a mix of sharp rhythms, new ideas, and impeccable instrumentation throughout. As with other Sdban titles, the presentation is wonderful – not just a great set list, but an overall feel that makes the package as hefty as the music inside. Titles include "Four On Six" by Kwartet Martin Verlinden, "So Why" by Kwartet Leo Meyer, "Amsterdam Blues" by Diamond Five, "Lady Elisabeth" by Tony Vos Quartet, "Blues For Eddy" by Red & Brown Brothers, "Sem" by Frans Elsen, "Relaxin With Rhythme" by The Rhythme All Stars, "Mensen Van Morgen" by Herman Schoonderwalt, "Wives & Lovers" by Rita Reys & Oliver Nelson, "Comin Home Baby" by Trio Tony Vos, "Sing Sing Sing" by Leddy Wessel with Jack Van Poll, "Blues Minor" by Boys Big Band, and "Afro Blues" by Herbie Mann with Wessel Ilcken Combo. The first album ever by Steve Marcus – a key player trying to mix rock and jazz at the end of the 60s! Marcus plays some really wild sax on the set – a bit of soprano and tenor, mixed with guitar and electric keys in a wonderfully fuzzy sound! The approach has lots of funk in the mix – thanks to drums from Bob Moses – and the whole set's got that really nice trippy psychedelic jazz feel that was used a lot on titles (like this one) done for Herbie Mann's hip Vortex records label! Years ahead of its time, with a sound that's only being appreciated fully today – and featuring some great jazz versions of psyche rock classics – like "Mellow Yellow", "Eight Miles High", "Rain", and "Tomorrow Never Knows" – all taken to electric jamming versions that work off of a modal groove and a Coltrane-esque approach to soloing! Also features a nice version of Gary Burton's "Half A Heart", which is one of the funkiest tunes on the record, and done with some cool electric Harpsichord! CD

Fantastic work from one of our favorite jazz duos of all time – pianist Jack Wilson and the young vibes genius Roy Ayers – working here back before his soul/funk fame of the 70s, in a completely different style! Ayers and Wilson only made a handful of records together back in the day – including important dates for Atlantic and Blue Note – and this set of unreleased live material from 1966 provides a much-needed addition to their short catalog of sides together – sublime modal jazz that we'd put right up there with anything else they ever did! Wilson is already a hell of a pianist on his own – one of the unsung greats of his generation, with a fantastic sense of flow and this mixture of lyricism and soulfulness that leads to all these very vivid moments and tonal explosions. Add Ayers to the mix, and you've really got something special – a vibes/piano pairing that sounds like nobody else – and which shows that even back before he worked with Herbie Mann, Roy was a tremendously unique player, destined for greatness. A split 70s LP – with two earlier classics! First up is How I Feel About Jazz – an important early album from Quincy Jones! Q's working here in some of his hippest settings of the 50s – scoring longish versions of jazz tunes for groups that include players like Lucky Thompson on tenor, Herbie Mann on flute, Art Farmer on trumpet, Phil Woods and Gene Quill on alto sax, Hank Jones on piano, and even Charles Mingus on bass! As with most Jones albums of the time, Quincy has a way of making a bigger group sound nice and lean – hitting some especially nice edges along with the rhythms, and really showing the way towards a new soulful sound for a bigger band. Titles include a sublime 10 minute version of "Walkin" that kicks off the album with a great soulful groove – plus original tunes "Evening In Paris", "Stockholm Sweetnin", and "Boo's Blues", as well as a version of Cannonball Adderley's "Sermonette". Next is Quintessence – a very soulful set of big band material from Quincy Jones – recorded during that tight early 60s period when his arrangements just couldn't fail! The album's his only session for Impulse, and it's got a slightly deeper style than his work from the time for Mercury – a bit more sophisticated, with nice modern touches that take the tunes in surprising directions. Part of the greatness of the set lies in the players – as the album features work by Curtis Fuller, Thad Jones, Stu Martin, Freddie Hubbard, Patty Brown, Phil Woods, and Jerome Richardson – and titles include "Robot Portrait", "Hard Sock Dance", "The Twitch", and "For Lena & Lennie". Given that Chet Baker's a singer himself, it's a bit surprising that he's working here with another vocalist – but that oddity aside, the album's a great little session that's got an intimate feel that's a bit different than Baker's own vocal work! Pace's voice is much fuller and richer than Chet's – with a range that would have been very much at home doing more dramatic pop material of the era, yet which also fits in very comfortably in this laidback small group session. Baker himself plays trumpet on the record, backing Johnny up – and other players include Herbie Mann on flute, Joe Berle on piano, Jimmie Burke on bass, and either Philly Joe Jones or Ed Thigpen on drums. Titles include "All Or Nothing At All", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Yesterdays", "Everything I've Got Belongs To You", "When The Sun Comes Out", and "This Is Always". CD

Savoy, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great lost side from Savoy Jazz – not to be confused with Opus De Jazz Vol 1, the more famous album by Milt Jackson. Like that one, though, this set features a vibist in the lead – John Rae, a strong player who only recorded a few albums, most notably with Herbie Mann. The groove's a lot more modern than the earlier set – with Steve Kuhn on piano and Bobby Jaspar on flute helping out Rae on the solos. ✨✧ Sonny SharrockBlack Woman ... LP
Atlantic/Superior Viaduct, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the best-ever Sonny Sharrock albums – and one of the few that really captures the fresh genius of his approach! The set was recorded in New York during the period when Sonny had just come out of Herbie Mann's group with Roy Ayers – but the sound is far far different than the lightly groovy records that Sonny cut with Herbie, more of a free expression of Sharrock's dark musical vision, filtered through the politics and progressive ideas of the time. The set was recorded in New York, with Dave Burrell on piano, Milford Graves on drums, and wife Linda on voice – and unlike on other albums, Linda doesn't get in the way too much, either, and her voice is a perfect accompaniment to the dark sound of the session. Side one features the tracks "Black Woman" and "Peanut", and side two has the band joined by Teddy Daniel on trumpet, and playing the tracks "Bialero", "Blind Willy", and "Portrait Of Linda In Three Colors, All Black". Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Mel Torme's hippest albums of the 60s – and a strong shift towards more swinging material after some of his mellower work for other labels! There's a bit of electric piano in the mix, and plenty of that Atlantic records pop/soul jazz approach – a take on soul jazz that's similar to tunes by Herbie Mann at the same time, but with vocals. The whole thing's filled with greatly grooving tracks – and it draws no small influence from Jon Hendricks' excellent work of the time! Titles include "Hi Fly", "Comin Home Baby", "Dat Dere", "Sidney's Soliloquy", and "Moanin". LP, Vinyl record album

This is the sort of collection that is easy to dismiss as one of the sort labels often churn out as a loss leaders, but it actually plays as a nice set of modern jazz from the mid 60s. The emphasis here is on bluesy soulful with a wide appeal, just the sort of stuff Atlantic excelled at. 5 numbers in all: John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things", Ray Charles' "Sweet Sixteen Bars", Eddie Harris' "Listen Here", Herbie Mann's "Comin' Home Baby", and the Modern Jazz Quartet's "One Note Samba" performed with Laurindo Almeida. ✨✧ Steve MarcusTomorrow Never Knows ... LP
Vortex, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Years ahead of its time, with a sound that's only being appreciated fully today – and featuring some great jazz versions of psych rock classics – like "Mellow Yellow", "Eight Miles High", "Rain", and "Tomorrow Never Knows" – all taken to electric jamming versions that work off of a modal groove and a Coltrane-esque approach to soloing! Also features a nice version of Gary Burton's "Half A Heart", which is one of the funkiest tunes on the record, and done with some cool electric Harpsichord! LP, Vinyl record album

Wow! This is one of Sonny Sharrock's rare early recordings, recorded in France shortly after he had been playing with Herbie Mann. The groove's kind of crazy, and it's amazing that Sonny jumped out so soon after leaving the sort of pop-jazz environs he was in with Herbie – but hey, lots of players got to France in the 60s, and completely let their bag open up – so why not Sonny? Wife Linda's on vocals on the session, and they're backed up by Beb Guerin on bass and Jacques Thollot on drums. Titles include "27th Day", "Soon", and "Monkey Pockie Boo". LP, Vinyl record album

Sdban (Netherlands), 1950s/1960s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Four Brothers (Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, etc)Together Again ... CD
RCA, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
How many different iterations of the "Four Brothers" were there? We don't know, but as near as we can tell, this grouping might most resemble the "original", with four West coast heavies joining forces for a swinging side. Originally making up the sax section of Woody Herman's Thundering Herd, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Herbie Steward and Serge Chaloff are the brothers, and they're joined by fellow Herman alum Buddy Jones, plus Elliot Lawrence and Don Lamond in the rhythm section on this side for Vik. As you'd expect, the numbers are all West coast gems, by the likes of Cohn, Sims, Jimmy Giuffre, Gerry Mulligan and Manny Albam amongst others, and featuring the brothers blowing in a remarkably spry manner for such a heavyweight lineup. 10 tracks in all: "Four And One More", "So Blue", "The Swinging Door", 'Four In Hand", "A Quick One", 'Four Brothers", "Ten Years Later", "The Pretty One", "Aged In Wood" and "Here We Go Again". ✨✧ Lee Morgan5 Original Albums (Delightfulee/The Cooker/Lee-Way/Rumproller/Search For The New Land) (5CD set) ... CD
Blue Note/Universal (Germany), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. Used 5 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
5 albums from Lee Morgan – one of the coolest cats to ever handle a trumpet for Blue Note! First up is Delightfulee – really unique album from the great Lee Morgan – a set that features the trumpeter in two different settings, but in a way that really works well together! Most of the album has Lee blowing in a very cool quintet – with Joe Henderson on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a group who maybe bring out a slightly hipper vibe that really points the way to the rest of Morgan's direction in the late 60s, when he was really letting some more spiritual currents loose. The other two tracks on the record feature a hip larger band directed by Oliver Nelson – swinging hard in a really soulful style! Nelson's arrangements on these two tracks are great – quite progressive, with a soul jazz big band style that seems to point the way towards the 70s – and the band provides a raging backdrop that lets Lee's trumpet soar over the top in beautiful crystal clear solos. Titles include "Nite Flite", "Delightful Deggie", "Ca-Lee-So", and "Zambia". Also features a few bonus tracks. The Cooker is a very appropriate title for a very cooking little album – one of Lee Morgan's first efforts as a leader, cut back during his first years of late 50s fame! The style here is a bit less Morgan-esque than some of Lee's later 60s classics – but the record is rock-solid throughout, and proof that Morgan was every bit as great a leader in a hardbop session as Hank Mobley or some of the other emerging heavyweights at Blue Note! The strength of the group really helps keep the fire stoked on the set – and Bobby Timmons turns in some amazing piano work alongside a lineup that includes Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The Adams presence gives the record a bit of the feel of some of Pepper's sessions with Donald Byrd – but the sparkling, soaring sound of Morgan makes the record way more than just a copycat set. Titles include "New-Ma", "Night In Tunisia", "Lover Man", "Just One Of Those Things", and "Heavy Dipper". Lee Way is an undisputed masterpiece by Lee Morgan – and one of the first records in which he shed his straight bop sensibility, and began evolving into a soulful genius for the 60s! The album's got 4 long tracks that all build beautifully – really extended numbers that break the format of some of Lee's earlier work, and hint a bit at some of the more complicated touches he'd use on later sessions. All players are great – and include fellow Jazz Messengers Bobby Timmons on piano and Art Blakey on drums, plus Jackie McLean on alto and Paul Chambers on bass. Titles include the sublime "These Are Soulful Days" – a perfect model of soulful lyricism – plus "Midtown Blues", "Nakatini Suite", and "The Lion & The Wolff". Rumproller often gets too easily lumped next to The Sidewinder – because of an obvious title and cover similarity to that hit record – but like that one, the album's far more than jazz cliche – and shows Lee Morgan to be one of the greatest jazz musicians of the 60s. The set starts off with the title cut, "The Rumproller" – hard-wailing soul bop, in the manner of Lee's most popular work – but then it easily flows into more sensitive material that has a freer, lyrical feel – like the great original tune "Eclipso" and Wayne Shorter's "Edda" – both of which are superb. Lee is astounding, as always, on trumpet – and the rest of the group includes the great Ronnie Matthews on piano, plus Joe Henderson, Victor Sproles, and Billy Higgins. Search For The New Land is a brilliant album that proves that even at the height of his success, Lee Morgan was one of the freest thinkers on Blue Note – always coming up with fresh ideas that continued to grow his talents! The first cut on the album is keen poof of that fact – the title track "Search For The New Land" – a beautiful 16 minute exploration of modal jazz themes, with an unusual stop/start device as a means of ushering solos by different bandmates – including Wayne Shorter on tenor, Grant Green on guitar, and Herbie Hancock on piano! The approach is unlike anything that Morgan ever did before – and unlike most of other Blue Note as well – and it also benefits from great rhythmic help from Reggie Workman on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Other tunes are a bit more conventional, but still pretty special – like some of Morgan's inventive work on the Rajah albums – with titles that include "The Joker", "Melancholee", "Mr. Kenyatta" and "Morgan The Pirate".
