✨✧ Eyeless In GazaSkelatal Framework – The Cherry Red Recordings 1981 to 1986 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Early 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A huge legacy of music from Eyeless In Gaza – an important British duo from the post-punk years, and one with a sound that definitely went on to shape the style of much bigger acts at the time! As with some of their darker contemporaries, the group began in a style that was stark and electric, but warmed things up as the records moved on, and they really learned how to hone their craft – especially the vocals of Martyn Bates, who has a pre-goth way of sounding spooky and soulful at the same time – all in a mode that's very British as well! Most tracks are pretty spare – lots of keyboards, moody bass, and guitar – and the set brings together 102 tracks from their albums for the Cherry Red label, plus singles too – in a box that has each of the five CDs divided up into thematic styles – running from catchy cuts on one disc to much more experimental work on another! ✨✧ Wesley BrownBlue In Green – A Novella (hardcover) ... Book
Blank Forms, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A work of fiction, but one that dives deep into the mind of Miles Davis, its main character – in a tale that begins with a police assault outside Birdland one night in August of 1959, then follows Davis as he reacts the the experience – moving around the city, and ruminating about his role in jazz and the impulses that have brought him so far. Author Wesley Brown takes a lot of liberty with dialogue and thoughts that might have been going through Miles' head – and romantic interest Frances Taylor figures strongly in the story as well. Some might argue for the opinions uttered by Davis in the story, and the tone he takes when speaking – but that's also part of the compelling quality of the book, and the risks it takes – imagining internal and external modes amidst a framework of actual events. 65 pages, hardcover. ✨✧ Caroline CrawfordMy Name Is Caroline (LP-styled jacket) ... CD
Mercury/P&C, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer soul set from Caroline Crawford – with production, arrangements, and songwriting by Hamilton Bohannon – soaring, beautiful, uniquely soulful sounds from the late 70s! Crawford's got a hell of a voice – equally well-suited to deeper soul ballads and uptempo groovers – and with Bohannon on board, there's plenty of groovers – although we like the mellow cuts just as much! Crawford was sort of Bohannon's big vocal discovery, and the Mercury efforts were a good use of his instrumental sound in a vocal driven framework – one that succeeds not just on the clubby soul level of his own records, but which also hits a more emotional tone than a lot of the dancefloor soul of the era. Johnny Allen contributed the string orchestrations – and titles include "Riding On Your Love", "Tell Me You'll Wait", "Coming On Strong", "It Rains Because" and "Caroline Breakdown". CD

✨✧ CureSeventeen Seconds ... LP
Fiction (UK), 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A haunting and relatively spare early one by The Cure that holds up incredibly well – standing true to the test of time as strongly as anything in their canon! From the perspective of fans who got into The Cure anytime from the mid 80s onward, these earlier efforts might initially sound like a moody framework for the more grandly produced records to come, give it a couple listens, because the minimal structure is incredibly strong! It's just their second album, but the eerily melodic Robert Smith vocals, his just as distinctive guitars, and then new bass player Simon Gallup's sound have The Cure mood in full semi-gloomy, yet wholly beautiful bloom! Includes the great title track, "A Reflection", "Play For Today", "Secrets", "In Your House", "Three", "The Final Sound", "A Forest", "M" and "At Night". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram EU reissue from 2016. Includes the heavy inner sleeve.)

✨✧ GorillazHumanz (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Parlophone, 2017. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A triumphant return for The Gorillaz – as improbably (impossibly!?) brilliant as ever! Much like the real life post-millennium culture we all inhabit, The Gorillaz exist in a world both virtual and physical – with artist and conceptualist Jamie Hewlett, singer/guiding force Damon Albarn, producer Twilite Tone and others providing a mood and aesthetic framework for an amazing roster of guest singers, rhymers and musicians on this one, who all really contribute a lot – especially to the lyricism and writing. Given the stylistically sprawling guests – both prominently billed and even more further behind the scenes – it's really impressive how well it holds together so cohesively from beginning-to-end. Way more than a cartoony supergroup, but you knew that already! Guests include Peven Everett, Mavis Staples, Danny Brown, Grace Jones, De La Soul and more, with an overall vibe Titles include "Ascension" with Vince Staples, "Strobelight" with Chicago indie soul legend in-the-making Peven Everett (and honestly one of the standout tracks, we're not just saying that out of hometown pride), "Momentz" with De La Soul, "Carnival" with Anthony Hamilton, "Let Me Out" with Mavis Staples & Pusha T, "Charger" with Grace Jones, "Submission" with Danny Brown & Keleta, "We Got The Power (Version 2:18:482) with Jehnny Beth (of Savages) and many more. 2CD deluxe edition includes a bonus CD with extra tracks – including "Halfway To A Halfway House" with Peven Everett, "Ticker Tape" with Carly Simon (!!!) & Kali Uchis and more. ✨✧ Mobb DeepInfamous ... LP
Loud, 1995. Very Good+ 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The masterful second album from Mobb Deep – served up at a level that's raw, gritty, and real – in ways that transcended the scene and cemented the duo's legacy! Production is nice and spare – and provides the perfect raw framework for the bleak storytelling – really pulling you in to the lyrics, and beautifully balancing things so that the record neither glamorizes its topics, nor gets to heavy either. The set features guest appearances by Q-Tip, Ghostface, Nas, Raekwon, and Big Noyd – and there's not a moment of filler at all, on titles that include "Shook Ones Part II", "Temperature's Rising", "Drink Away The Pain", "Survival Of The Fittest", "Trife Live", "Eye For An Eye", and lots more. Classic! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ PortisheadThird ... CD
Mercury, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A decade since their previous effort, and 14 years since their previous masterpiece, Portishead returns with Third – and, oh, what a mindblowing third act. The first thing you'll realize about Third is that it's not Dummy Part 3 – a welcome and surprising trait – but it does take their earlier way with a spooky, brooding and ominous framework to new dimensions. Secondly, there's no obvious single – it's to be taken as a whole. Beth Gibbons's vocals are as soul wrenching as ever, and an overall stark, melancholic beauty connects Portishead '08 to the old stuff, but they go deeper. Some bits are quite minimalist, wringing emotion from a low strum, a distant chime, or a haunting bit of dissonance – other parts are more richly layered and even a bit jarring. Pulp cinematic aura, feedback textured psychedelia, haunting European pop, and traces of field recorded folk flavor the sound – they've dabbled in all of these elements before – but never with this particular feel. The sound of epiphany. How many acts in the pop realm create a whole new style with a classic album, and then pull off something nearly as great almost 15 years later, without ripping themselves off? Add Portishead to that small list. We'll call '08 early, this is the best pop album of the year. Titles include "Silence", "Hunter", "Nylon Smile", "The Rip", "We Carry On", "Deep Water", "Machine Gun", "Small", "Magic Doors", "Threads". CD

✨✧ Roxy MusicCountry Life ... CD
Virgin (UK), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
The fourth album from Roxy Music – a brilliant statement of their early genius through and through! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. Titles include "Out Of The Blue", "The Thrill Of It All", "Three & Nine", "Triptych", "Casanova", and "Prairie Rose". CD

✨✧ Paul YoungquistPure Solar World – Sun Ra & The Birth Of Afrofuturism ... Book
University Of Texas Press, 2016/2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great book that looks not just at the music of Sun Ra, but also the theory behind it – the special take on reality, and interstellar philosophy that made Ra as important a thinker as he was a musician! The music is approached from a theoretical framework that's extremely illuminating – especially if you only know some of the Arkestra records at face value, and not in the larger context of Sun Ra's ideas – and the author includes plenty of history to illuminate the ideas, but in ways that are nicely different than some of the previous books on the subject. The whole thing is a really great look at the transformative power of the music of Ra – that quality that's always made him far more than just another avant jazz musician, and instead a figure of inspiration and social change to decades of listeners who have followed his sound. Very well researched, with copious notes. Paperback, 372 pages. Book

✨✧ VariousNothing But A House Party – The Birth Of The Philly Sound 1967 to 1971 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some folks might associate Philadelphia soul with the famous Gamble & Huff productions of the 70s disco years – but the city was already overflowing with great music in the years before Philadelphia International – as you'll hear in this totally groovy set! Philly was making as much great soul music in the 60s as Detroit, Chicago, and New York – thanks to an earlier musical framework that was set up by the city's big pop hits of the late 50s – which provided plenty of labels, studios, and other facilities for Philly's ever-growing array of soul talents, too – so much so that by the end of the 60s, the city was turning into a destination for singers outside of town – almost as much of a musical magnet as studios in Memphis or Muscle Shoals! This set does a great job of bringing together both aspects of that scene – wonderful homegrown talent, mixed with outsiders to really took off in the new Philly sound of the 60s – a joyous, positive, upbeat approach that worked wonderfully well for a variety of artists. Titles include "Your Fool Still Loves You" by Oscar Weathers, "It's All Over But The Shouting" by George Tindley, "You've Been Untrue" by The Delfonics, "Ain't Nothing But A House Party" by The Show Stoppers, "Peace To You Brother" by Lou Johnson, "Christine" by Executive Suite, "Help Me" by Honey & The Bees, "You Got What I Need" by Freddie Scott, "Rainmaker" by The Moods, "Keep On Striving" by Moses Smith, "That's The Price You Have To Pay" by Brenda & The Tabulations, "What You Gave Up" by The Continental 4, "Every Day Is A Holiday" by The Intruders, "Standing In The Darkness" by The Ethics, and "Girl You're Too Young" by Len Barry.
