One of the earliest records by the legendary Novi Singers – and a rare MPS set that exposed the group to a larger European audience! Novi hail from Poland, but have a name that's an condensation of the English phrase "new original vocal instruments" – a great summation of the way the quartet use their voices to recreate the feel of instruments in modern jazz – a mode first explored by the Lambert Hendricks & Ross group in the US, but taken to a much farther extreme on this set! The group are supported here by a border-crossing small combo of musicians that includes Zbigniew Namyslowski on alto sax, Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Adam Makowicz on piano, and Billy Brooks on drums – and the sound is cool, laidback, and very groovy – extremely tight, almost even more so than some of the group's Polish albums! Really wonderful work from the legendary Tony Williams – a set that has the drummer hitting a whole new sound at the start of the 90s – a groove that's rich and soulful, yet still every bit as sharp as before! The set's straight ahead, and graced with some very youthful energy by a new-generation lineup that includes Wallace Roney on trumpet, Bill Pierce on tenor and soprano sax, Mulgrew Miller on piano, and Robert Hurst on bass – all players who bristle with excitement from the very first notes, expressing a sense of confidence and vision of a new jazz generation that no longer has to battle between its inside and outside impulses. Williams' drumming is superb, and nicely understated at many points – and titles include "Native Heart", "City Of Lights", "Extreme Measures", "Liberty", and "Two Worlds". CD

The incredible second album by The Wipers – a record that cements Greg Sage's status as not only a pioneering figure in Pacific Northwest punk/post punk songcraft, but also as one of the more innovative guitarists in that scene. Manny composed the entire set as kind of a "city suite" in jazz – one that paints the picture of many different shades of city life through jazzy solos and a range of deeper tones and colors from the larger ensemble. Players include Frank Wess, Phil Woods, JJ Johnson, Jerome Richardson, and Mike Manieri – all extremely well-suited to an outing like this – and titles include "The Game Of The Year", "Born On Arrival", "The View From The Inside", "El Barrio Latino", "Ground Floor Rear", and "Riverview". Incredible early work from Lorez Alexandria – the kind of albums that instantly set her apart from other singers of the 50s, reissued here properly for the first time in years! On This Is Lorez, the singer is working with sublime small combo backings from the group of pianist King Fleming – an unusual Chicago ensemble that includes Wilber Wynn on guitar, Ronald Wilson on flute and oboe, Vernel Fournier on drums, and Audrey Jones on bongos – a musical lineup that brings in a different sort of sophistication to the record, shading tunes with moody colors on flute and oboe that perfectly support Alexandria's soulful and sensitive interpretations of the tunes. The whole thing is pure genius, and a key look at the new levels of sophistication that were bubbling everywhere on the Chicago scene during the years of Jamal and Sun Ra. Lorez Sings Pres follows in a very similar mode – with backing by a Chicago group that again includes King Fleming piano, plus Charles Stepney on vibes, Paul Serrano on trumpet, and Vernel Fournier on drums – an extremely hip lineup that makes the record far more than just the Lester Young tribute promised in the title! But despite the instrumentalists, the real star on all sides is Alexandria – who sings with dark tones and deep colors that go far beyond conventional jazz vocals – all carried off with that slightly breathy mode that was one more unique aspect of her work! Mose Allison creates a very swinging machine for this classic Atlantic Records set – by adding in a few horns to his usual trio, and making for a groove that's even jazzier overall! Mose's vocals are wonderful, as always – extremely witty, with that great balance of New Orleans roots and 60s hipster jazz – served up in a host of his own wonderful compositions! But at some points, the horns step out even more strongly, and get some great solo play of their own – with excellent work from the obscure Jimmy Reider on tenor sax, a surprisingly great player we wish we knew better – plus the great Jimmy Knepper on trombone. One of Mose Allison's most sophisticated album, and one that has him going way past his usual "folksy jazzy" style, into a realm that touches on Monk-like modernism! The whole first side is Allison's extended "Hiram Brown" suite, which mixes vocal and instrumental passages in an extremely haunting way. The flipside features shorter versions of standards – some vocal, some instrumental – but all with more of a moderist sound than his earlier Prestige recordings – a great step forward for one of the most unique talents in jazz! Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, but also a grittier, more guitar-based groove at times too – one that rumbles heavily at the bottom of the rhythms, with a sound that's like Norman Whitfield-era Motown, taken to much greater extremes! There's actually a lot more Detroit going on in the work than Indy – but the horns also have a jazzier, more open-ended quality too – not just parts penned for simple funky rhythms, but ones that show some influence from the more righteous side of the jazz spectrum. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 – but only issued here for the first time – and together, the tracks are a great example of a hip group from the underground, really letting loose with a great sense of freedom. There's some vocals on the record, but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation overall – and titles include "Can I Help You", "Love Fades", "Trouble Will Remain", "We've Come A Long Way", "Liberty", "Mister President", "Free Your Mind", "We Have Love", and "Lord Help Me". An album recorded in Portugal – as you might guess from the title – but featuring a group of real Swedish music heavyweights! The trio features fantastic interplay between the bass of Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, the drums of Kjell Nordeson, and the tenor and soprano sax of Martin Kuchen – the latter of whom wrote most of the music, with a vivid style that's extremely compelling – as rich in fresh ideas as the musicians are free in their interpretation! Kuchen is amazing – really wonderful on both tenor and soprano – and the music here has maybe a looser approach to the sorts of sounds that the Moserobie label first gave us in its early years – with this great interplay between structure and freedom. Titles include "Equality & Death", "Satan In Plain Clothes", "Francisco/By Way Of Deception", and "Don't Ruin Me/Love Flee Thy House". CD

A key later session from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a record that gained them global exposure through the ECM label, and which has them working in a beautifully subtle sense of sound, space, and tone! The work is less all-out challenging than some of the group's earliest recordings – but no less strong, as if anything, the AEC has mastered their musical vision so well, they're coming across here with an extremely cohesive sound. Instrumentation includes a wide range of percussion, plus the usual bass of Malachi Favors and the saxes of Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell – and tracks include "Ja", "Folkus 11", "597-59", and "Dreaming Of The Master". An extremely well done collection of the Art Ensemble's recordings for ECM – featuring tracks from the albums Nice Guys, Full Force, Third Decade, and Urban Bushman – as well as related material by Roscoe Mitchell and Lester Bowie. The package features a great booklet with photos of the group and notes on the material – and titles include "Charlie M", "Magg Zelma", "Nice Guys", "Nine To Get Ready", "Folkus", "Rios Negros", and "Prayer For Jimbo Kwesi". The last recording session by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago with Malachi Favors – done shortly before his death in early 2004, and a record that's certainly touched by his gentle soul! There's a poise here that's really great – a kind of careful and thoughtful presentation of the material that's often extremely tuneful, and which features some especially nice reed work from Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman. Titles include "Sirius Calling", "Two Twenty", "He Took A Cab To Neptune", "Till Autumn", "Dance Of Circles", "You Can't Get Away", and "Taiko". CD

A really beautiful combination of reeds and synthesizer – one done in a spare, moody style that's extremely evocative! Austin's saxophone work here would be great enough on its own – soulful, fluid, and freely searching, but never too outside. Yet the added synth and percussion from Gallivan really makes the record something special – because Joe never overdoes his contributions, and instead keeps things really even handed – often going for a style that matches the lyrical beauty of Austin's work perfectly. And unlike other projects of this type, this one is never sleepy, or too "atmospheric" – as each tune here has a good structure and sense of economy – letting us know that Gallivan and Austin aren't just putting down sloppy soundscapes. A groovy little vocal group with a swinging 50s sound – working here with some great jazzy arrangements from trombonist Kai Winding! The style of the set prefaces Winding's pop/jazz sides for Verve in the mid 60s – but has a sound that's somewhat similar – with lead vocals by the male/female Axidentals group, and some trombone-based jazzy backings that showcase Winding's horn amidst a larger brass section. There's a great poppy punch to these tunes – and the Axidentals themselves can be credited for some extremely inventive vocal arrangements at times – in styles that go way beyond those of conventional groups of the period, in a mode that reminds us of some of the work by the Kirby Stone Four or the John LaSalle Quartet. David Bedford handled arrangements, and other players on the session include some ex-Soft Machine comrades – like Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt! A blinding reissue of Roy's early jazz work for Atlantic! Both records are great, and feature super-hip lineups that include players like Herbie Hancock, Sonny Sharrock, Joe Henderson, Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, and Ron Carter. Despite the early placement of the material in Roy's career, his conception on the vibes is extremely mature, and both records represent a haunting new conception of the instrument that was to later emerge in full force on Roy's jazz funk albums for Polygram a few years later. These Atlantic sides are essential listening for Roy, and they're amazing little records that show a previously under-recognized side of his career. They're filled with great original tracks like "Ayerloom", "Virgo Vibes", "Glow Flower", "Shadows", and "Daddy Bug" – and the sound and package is excellent! CD

A great little album by Roy Ayers – one that features none of his hits, which means lots of fresh material – and which has great examples of both sides of Roy's talents at the time! The dancefloor side of Roy kicks in with "Love Will Bring Us Back Together", an extremely catchy groover that's very much in the mode of "Running Away", with plenty of choppy funky riffs, and a good soul base at the core. Even better, though, is the mellow spacey side of Roy – which shows up wonderfully in the cuts "Is It Too Late To Try" and "If You Love Me" – two overlooked gems that float along in a perfect blend of jazz and modern soul, with great breathy vocals and vibes, very much in the spirit of stuff on the You Send Me album.
