EddyLouiss/Kenny Clarke/Rene Thomas —
EddyLouiss Trio ... CD Dreyfus (France), Late 60s. Used ...

Great work by one of the best European organists ever! EddyLouiss is a massively under-acknowledged talent – a whiz on the Hammond with the soul of Jimmy Smith and John Patton, and the freewheeling vision of Larry Young – and this record is a perfect chance to hear him at his best. The setting is spare – just drums by Kenny Clarke and guitar by Rene Thomas – and Eddy's grooving in an open exploratory style that never forgets to swing, and which reaches towards the sky on some really nice modal lines! Titles include "No Smoking", "Don't Want Nothin", "Nardis", "Blue Tempo", and "You've Changed". CD

Big Jullien & His All Stars (Ivan Jullien) —
Riviera Sound No 1 ... CD Riviera/Sonorama (Germany), 1970. New Copy ...

Fantastic French grooves from the end of the 60s – a killer set of jazz-based tracks recorded by trumpeter Ivan Jullien, with help from funky arranger Michel Colombier! Jullien recorded a fair bit of jazz and studio work around the time, and his playing here is razor-sharp – and supported by Colombier grooves that rival his best soundtrack material, his experiments with Pierre Henry, or his backings for singers like Serge Gainsbourg or Brigitte Bardot! Colombier also plays keyboards on the record, as does the great Maurice Vander – amidst a host of other great French jazzmen who include Pierre Gossez on sax, Roger Guerin on additional trumpet, and Eddie Louiss on organ. Drums are nice and funky on most cuts – and the whole thing kicks even more than most funky big band records on MPS! Includes the great break cut "I Remember Otis" – plus "Sonoro", "The Looser", "Talk", "An Oscar For Eddy", "Wake The Monster", "Edith", and "Crescendo". CD
Rare work from a group you won't know at all, but who are totally great – a hip Argentine trio who really stretch out here in an incredible mix of organ, saxes, and Fender Rhodes! The group are joined by the great Fernando Gelbard on Rhodes for three of the album's five tracks – and they also feature Hammond and piano from Horacio Larumbe, an excellent player who gets this chunky tone out of the organ that reminds us of EddyLouiss at times – with a similar sense of great, wide colors! The group also features Oscar Tissera on flute and tenor – the latter sometimes played with "octavoice" – plus Eduardo Casalla on drums. This material appears here for the first time ever – a very cool live performance for radio, with titles that include "H2O", "Mate Con Sacarina", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Prohibido Fijar Carteles". Great early stuff by this swingin' French vocal group! These guys swung as hard as American groups, like Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross – but they stuck to hipper, jazzier material, and had a driving sound that never let up! The group is led by singer Mimi Perrin, who also handed the arrangements – and it features French jazz greats Ward Swingle and EddyLouiss. Includes some great jazzy versions of "Naima", "Boplicity", "Westwood Walk", and "Early Autumn". LP, Vinyl record album
Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, Martial Solal and Rene Urtreger on piano, Rene Thomas on guitar, EddyLouiss on organ, Jean-Marie Ingrand and Pierre Michelot on bass, and Bernard Lubat and Kenny Clarke on drums. CD
